Jacob Lewiton
Judge Jacob Lewiton, former chief justice of the Boston Municipal Court and 30-year Belmont resident, died at home on Tuesday, February 29, 2000, after a lengthy illness. He was 91. Born in Malden in 1908, he was brought up in Revere as the youngest of seven children. Judge Lewiton received an academic scholarship to Tufts College. Graduating summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa in 1930, he went on to earn his law degree, magna cum laude, from Harvard Law School in 1933. He worked in private law practice until 1941 when he was appointed assistant attorney general of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. He held this position until the U.S. entered World War II. Judge Lewiton enlisted in the Navy and served in both the Atlantic and Pacific theatres. Seeing action during the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa, he received an honorable discharge from active duty in 1945 at the rank of lieutenant commander, and was awarded four battle stars in connection with his service. After the war, he resumed his private law practice until being named special counsel to then Gov. Robert Bradford. In 1948, Bradford appointed him an associate justice of the Boston Municipal Court, where he served for 30 years. In 1973, he was appointed chief justice of the BMC. When Judge Lewiton retired from the BMC at the mandatory age of 70, he remained an active jurist, serving for many years as a court-appointed master in the Superior Court and as an arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association. In 1985, the association honored him with its Whitney North Seymour Medal for his "outstanding contributions to the arbitration process." Judge Lewiton was a trustee and distinguished alumni of Tufts University; vice president and life trustee of the Combined Jewish Philanthropies of Greater Boston; a board member of Jewish Family and Children's Services; and a member of the Examining Committee of the Boston Public Library. In addition to his wife, Bernice (Goldman) Lewiton, he is survived by his children, Marvin Lewiton and his wife Naomi Lown of Arlington; Cynthia Lewiton Jackson and her husband Jacob Jackson of Needham; and Barbara Lewiton of Arlington; his sister, Sarah Savin of Canton; and five grandchildren. Funeral services were held today at Levine Chapel in Brookline. Robert A. Titelbaum
Dr. Robert A. Titelbaum, 75, of Jupiter, Fla. and Belmont, died Feb. 20, 2000, at his Florida home. He was the husband of Eleanor (Rose) Titelbaum. He was born and grew up in Somerville, the son of the late Dr. Barnett and Anna (Lomansey) Titelbaum. Dr. Titelbaum graduated in 1966 from the New England College of Optometry and was on the teaching staff of the college for many years. He was a noted optometrist for almost 35 years in Somerville. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Dr. Alan R. Titelbaum and his wife Deborah of Marblehead; a son-in-law, David Wexler of Reading; a brother, Dr. Melvin G. Titelbaum and his wife Lorraine of Lexington; a sister-in-law, Anita Titelbaum of Newton; and four grandchildren. He was also the father of the late Sandra Wexler, and the brother of the late Dr. Leroy Titelbaum. Services were held Feb. 23 in the Levine Chapel, Brookline. Interment was at Sharon Memorial Park, Sharon. A memorial observance was held Thursday evening at his late residence in Belmont. Gliqiria Pano
Gliqiria (Fatce) Pano, 99, of Belmont, died Feb. 14, 2000, at The Wingate of Brighton, following a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Vasil Pano. Born in Korce, Albania, she attended Albanian schools before arriving in the West End of Boston. She is survived by two sons, Peter V. Pano of California, and Ben Pano of Watertown; a daughter, Virginia Blundo of Billerica; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 18, at the Albanian Orthodox Cathedral of St. George, 523 East Broadway, South Boston. Interment will be at Belmont Cemetery, Belmont. Memorial donations in Mrs. Pano's memory may be made to the St. George Cathedral Foundation. Arrangements were under the direction of the Brown & Sons Funeral Home, Belmont.
Frank W. Steber
Frank W. Steber, 66, of Belmont, formerly of North Reading, died at his home Feb. 8, 2000. He was born in North Reading on June 9, 1933, the son of the late Ernest and Maria (Siemens) Steber. He attended North Reading Public Schools and was a former member of the First Baptist Church. He resided in North Reading for more than 30 years and had been a resident of Belmont for the past 23 years. Mr. Steber was a former technician at Metropolitan State Hospital in Waltham. He retired in 1988 following 30 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Republican Congressional Committee for many years. He was an avid reader, especially history books, and he enjoyed listening to Frank Sinatra's music. Mr. Steber is survived by a brother, Stanley P. Steber of Naples, Maine; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was also the brother of the late Fred, Edwin, Robert, John, Wesley and James Steber, Livia Edwards and Nancy Doucette. A funeral service was held Feb. 12, at the First Baptist Church, North Reading. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery, North Reading. Arrangements were under the direction of the Croswell Funeral Home, North Reading.
James J. Scarfo
James J. Scarfo, 92, of Belmont, died suddenly Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000 at Mt. Auburn Hospital. He was the husband of the late Florence A. (Spagnolia) Scarfo. Born in Boston, he lived most of his life in Belmont. For over 50 years he operated the family business, D. Scarfo Market Gardeners, in Belmont. The business was started by his father, Daniel. Mr. Scarfo is survived by two sons, Daniel Scarfo of Belmont and James J. Scarfo Jr. of Watertown; a daughter, Ruth Scarfo of Belmont; and five grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Anthony, Angelo and Mary Scarfo. A funeral Mass was held in St. Joseph's Church Wednesday, Feb. 2 with interment in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Watertown. Arrangements by William T. Hickey & Son Funeral Home, Cambridge.
Frank Oteri
Frank Oteri, 84, a lifelong resident of Belmont, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000. He was the husband of Ann E. (Seddon) Oteri. Born in Belmont, he was the son of the late Orazio and Nunziata (Fagnani) Oteri. Prior to his retirement he was an insurance executive for Blue Shield of Massachusetts. He was an avid golfer and a member of the Lexington Golf Club. Besides his wife, Mr. Oteri is survived by two daughters, Lisa A. Oteri of West Roxbury and Elaine M. Oteri of Belmont; six sisters, Rose Elton, Margaret Calabrese, Anna Howe, Florence Oteri, Dorothy Mele and Nancy MacIsaac; a brother, Harry Oteri; many nieces and nephews; and his devoted dog, Teddy. He was predeceased by a sister, Emily Youell. A funeral Mass was held at St. Joseph's Church in Belmont. Arrangements were under the direction of the Short, Williamson & Diamond Funeral Home, Belmont.
Barbara S. Pearson
Barbara S. Pearson, 77, of Belmont, died by accident on Jan. 28, 2000. She was born in Boston, the daughter of the late Philip K. and Barbara I. (Potter) Pearson. She was a graduate of LaSalle Junior College. She had been a resident of Waltham for over 70 years. She retired in 1998 as a principal clerk for the Registry of Motor Vehicles after 44 years of service. Ms. Pearson was a late member of the Waltham Historical Society, St. Hilda Guild, the Republican Party where she served as a delegate to the National Convention, and a volunteer at the Community Supper program at the Church of the Advent, Boston. Ms. Pearson is survived by a brother, Philip K. Pearson and his wife Eleanor of Farmington, Conn.; a nephew, Philip Pearson of Tolland, Conn.; two nieces, Carol Pearson of Farmington, Conn., and Ellen Campelli of Vernon, Conn.; and several grandnephews and grandnieces. A funeral service was held Feb. 1, in the Church of the Advent, Boston. Interment was in Cambridge Cemetery. Evelyn R. Clark
Evelyn R. (Mahoney) Clark, 87, died Feb. 27, 2000, at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital. She was the wife of the late Harold Clark. She was born in Boston and had been a resident of Belmont for over 50 years. Mrs. Clark was a retired recreational therapist for McLean Hospital. She worked for more than 25 years, retiring when she was about 80 years old. She is survived by several nieces and nephews; and a dear friend, Joan Graham of Belmont. She was also the mother of the late Valerie E. Deutch. A funeral was held today, March 2, from the Short, Williamson & Diamond Funeral Home, Belmont, followed by a funeral Mass in St. Camillus Church, Arlington. Interment was private. Angela C. Hennessy
Angela C. Hennessy, a resident of Belmont for the past 60 years, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000 at St. Mary's Hospital, Waterbury, Conn. She was the widow of Frank J. Hennessy. Born in Pawtucket, R.I., she was educated in the Rhode Island school system and was a graduate of Bryant College. An avid golfer, bridge player and cross-country skier, she was active in the Cecilian Guild of Boston, the League of Catholic Women, Hospice, the Belmont Garden Club, Rose's Kitchen and the Woodland Country Club. She was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church, Belmont. Mrs. Hennessy is survived by a daughter, Ann M. Largay of Middlebury, Conn.; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and four nieces and nephews. The funeral was held Friday, Feb. 25, from the Bergin Funeral Home, Waterbury, with a funeral Mass at Blessed Sacrament Church. Burial took place at Belmont Cemetery, Belmont. Ruth G. Marcotte
Ruth G. (Geerlings) Marcotte, 89, of Belmont, died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000 at the Stanley R. Tippett Hospice in Needham. She was the wife of the late Dr. Reo J. Marcotte.
Born in Grand Rapids, Mich., she was an active member of the Plymouth Congregational Church in Belmont.
Mrs. Marcotte is survived by a son, Keith A. and his wife Virginia of Jamaica Plain.
Funeral services in the Short, Williamson & Diamond Funeral Home, 52 Trapelo Road, Belmont, will be held Friday, March 3 at 11 a.m. There are no calling hours. Interment will follow in Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge.
