Joseph J. Rakauskas, 82, electrician, Navy vet
Naples, Fla.; Cambridge, Framingham

Monday, January 25, 1999

Joseph John Rakauskas of Naples, Fla., and previously of Cambridge and Framingham, a retired electrician and Navy veteran, died Saturday in Naples of natural causes. He was 82.

Born in Cambridge, he was educated in the local schools.

Mr. Rakauskas worked for General Electric in Everett making superchargers for bombers and and fighters before World War II.

He volunteered for the Navy in 1942 and saw combat in six major campaigns in the Middle East, Mediterranean, and Europe during the invasions of Africa, Sicily, Salerno and Anzio aboard LST - 369. He was also in the North Sea and at Omaha Beach on D - Day in 1944 on LST - 060.

After the Normandy invasion his ship set a record by making more than a hundred cross - channel trips carrying supplies for General George Patton's Third Army. He left the Navy in 1946 as a Storekeeper First Class.

Mr. Rakauskas worked in Cambridge as an electrician after the war. He retired in 1994 in Framingham after several heart attacks.

In 1996 he moved to Naples, Fla., to be closer to his daughter and her family.

Husband of the late Agnes Katherine (Henihan), he is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Teresa Schemmer of Naples, Fla.; and a sister, Anna of Medford.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in St. Paul's Cathedral, Harvard Square.

Burial is in Cambridge Cemetery, Cambridge.

Thomas P. Reilly, 77, retired foreman
East Falmouth

Tuesday, November 9, 1999

Thomas P. Reilly of East Falmouth, a retired chemical company foreman, died Saturday at his home. He was 77.

Born in Newburyport, Mr. Reilly was raised in East Cambridge and graduated from Rindge Technical School in 1939.

He served in the Army as a medic during World War II.

Mr. Reilly was employed as a foreman by the former Dewey & Almy Chemical Co. in Cambridge, and retired in 1979.

He was the past president of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Cambridge. He was a 20 - year parishioner of St. Anthony's Church in East Falmouth.

Mr. Reilly is survived by his wife, Mary (Hegger) of East Falmouth; a son, Kenneth T. of Towanda, Pa.; a daughter, Teresa M. Devlin of East Falmouth; two sisters, Marie O'Connell of Arlington and Regina Bernacchio of Taunton; and five grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated today at noon in St. Anthony's Church.

Burial will follow in the National Cemetery, Bourne.

Rev. Thomas J. Spillane, 75, B.C., Holy Cross teacher

The Rev. Thomas J. Spillane, S.J., a Catholic priest, died Thursday at the Campion Center in Weston. He was 75.

Born in Dorchester, Father Spillane graduated from Boston College High School in 1940 and entered the novitiate of the Society of Jesus in Lenox that same year. He studied philosophy at Weston College in 1944 for three years. He was ordained in 1953. During his career, he taught math and chaired the department at Boston College High School and had served as treasurer of the school. Father Spillane served as assistant dean and professor of theology at Boston College from 1955 - 56. He also taught math and was the treasurer at Bishop Connolly High School in Fall River.

From 1965 - 67, he was principal of the Cranwell School in Lenox. He taught mathematics and private study in physics at Holy Cross College and taught math at Catholic University.

He also served as treasurer of the Weston Jesuit School of Theology in Cambridge. In 1986, he became administrator of the Jesuit Community at Boston College High School until 1988, when he served as administrator and business manager at the Jesuit retreat center in Gloucester.

He served as director of the St. Joseph Center in Charlestown. As his health began to fail, he entered Campion Health Center.

He was interested in Irish literature and culture.

Father Spillane is survived by two brothers, James C. of Quincy and John F. of Wollaston; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass was celebrated yesterday at the Campion Center Chapel, Weston.

Burial was in the Campion Cemetery, Weston.

Archbishop Joseph Tawil, 85
West Newton

Archbishop Joseph Tawil of West Newton, Apostolic Eparch for the Melkite Catholics of the United States, died Wednesday at Newton - Wellesley Hospital. He was 85.

Born in Damascus, Syria, the archbishop studied for the priesthood under the White Fathers at St. Anne's Seminary in Jerusalem, and was ordained in July 1936.

Father Tawil was first assigned to the Patriarchal College in Alexandria, Egypt, where he was a teacher and then became dean.

In 1943, the archbishop was named president of the college and remained in that position for 11 years until he was appointed patriarchal vicar. Father Tawil was consecrated a bishop in 1960, and was named patriarchal vicar in Damascus, where he attended the Second Vatican Council.

In October 1969, Archbishop Tawil was appointed Apostolic Exarch of all Melkite - Rite Catholics for the United States by Pope Paul VI and was installed in March 1970. Succeeding Bishop Justin Najmy, Archbishop Tawil founded the diocesan publication ``Sophia," established the first diaconate training program in an Eastern Catholic diocese and a Diocesan Pastoral Council.

He later inaugurated a Diocesan Communications Office, the National Association of Melkite Youth and a full - time office of Educational Services.

During his tenure, Archbishop Tawil founded eight new parishes and five missions, while ordaining 26 new priests and 23 deacons. He retired in 1989.

The Rev. Deacon John MacMillan of St. Joseph's Parish in Lawrence said the archbishop ``was very dignified in his ministry - a real father to all the clergy that served under him."

The archbishop is survived by his brother, Ibrahim,and many nieces and nephews.

A concelebrated funeral service will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m. at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Annunciation in Roslindale. Concelebrators will include the archbishop's successor, Bishop John Elya, and Catholic bishops from New England.

Burial will follow in St. Basil's Cemetery, Cumberland, R.I.

William F. Taylor, 68, `King of Mounds'
Dorchester

Sunday, April 25, 1999

William F. Taylor Sr. of Dorchester, a retired Boston Parks Department employee, died at home Friday after a brief illness. He was 68.

Born in Boston, he was raised in South Boston and lived in Dorchester for many years.

Mr. Taylor worked for the Parks Department of the city of Boston for 47 years, retiring in February. He was known as ``King of the Mounds" and had a ballfield on Adams Street named in his honor yesterday.

He was a member of St. Mark's VFW Post in Dorchester.

Husband of the late Elaine (Casey) Barends - Taylor, Mr. Taylor is survived by four sons, William Barends of East Bridgewater, James Barends of St. Petersburg, Fla., John Barends of West Bridgewater and William F. Jr. of Dorchester; seven daughters, Linda Evans of Whitman, Ruth Allen of West Bridgewater, Joanne MacIntyre of Braintree, Mary Barends of Weymouth, Dorothy Hook of Weymouth, Diane Duffy of Braintree, and Elaine Matthews of Dorchester; one brother, Walter Whittemore of Hyde Park; three sisters, Alice Hill of Salem, N.H., Helen Galinauskas of South Boston and Kathleen Regan of Mansfield; 39 grandchildren; and several great - grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated tomorrow at 11 a.m. in St. Mark's Church, Dorchester.

Burial will be in New Calvary Cemetery, Boston.

John `Jack' Tector, 69, decorated Korea vet
Boston

Saturday, November 13, 1999

John ``Jack" Tector of Boston, a longtime first - floor receptionist at Joslin Diabetes Center, died Saturday at Wellesley Manor Nursing Home. He was 69.

Born in Boston, Mr. Tector was a decorated Korean War veteran of the 21st Infantry, 24th division. He served with Task Force Smith, the first American troops to engage the enemy on July 1, 1950.

He was awarded the Silver Star, five Bronze Battle Stars, Combat Infantryman's Badge and several other decorations.

Mr. Tector was a retired Deaconess Hospital plumber when he began working at the first floor information desk at Joslin Diabetes Center in 1989. This past June, Mr. Tector received a 10 - year Length of Service Award at Joslin's annual ceremony.

Mr. Tector was a member of the American Legion Post 327, Roxbury.

He is survived by two brothers, Ralph ``Leo" of Wellesley and Alfred F. of Stoughton; three sisters, Hannah M. McGrath of Pawtucket, R.I., Bernadette Kearns and Mary T. Mead, both of North Conway, N.H.

A funeral service was held Wednesday at George F. Doherty and Sons Funeral Home, Wellesley.

Burial was in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
