Salvatore A. "Sam" Lauretta, 86
Hyannis - Salvatore A. "Sam" Lauretta, 86, a former shoe company worker, died February 26, 1998 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.
He was the husband of Agnes R. (Pompa) Lauretta for 63 years.
Born in Lawrence, Mr. Lauretta was educated in the Haverhill and Boston school systems. He lived in Haverhill for 35 years, where he was a sole cutter at the former Allen Shoe Co. for many years and a member of St. Rita's Church.
Mr. Lauretta later lived in Atkinson for a few years before moving to Hyannis 25 years ago. He enjoyed working around his home, his garden, and his dog.
Surviving besides his wife are a sister, Conda Pascucci of Haverhill; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral was held March 2 at the H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Home in Haverhill, followed by a Mass of Christian burial in St. Rita's Church, Haverhill. Burial was in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Haverhill.

Edwin Lorentzen, 54
Hyannis - Edwin R. Lorentzen, 54, died March 2, 1998 at the Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care Facility-Pavilion, after a short illness.
Born in Worcester, he graduated with honors from the University of New Hampshire in Durham, N.H.
Mr. Lorentzen moved to Cape Cod several years ago from Worcester.
A Navy veteran, he served during the Vietnam War.
Services were private.
Philip A. Mahoney, 52
Centerville - Philip A. Mahoney, 52, a clerk at Kmart in Hyannis, died February 25, 1998 at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis, after being stricken at home.
He was the husband of Sandra (Shurtleff) Mahoney.
Born in Weymouth, Mr. Mahoney graduated from Abington High School. After graduation, he worked for the former Boston Whaler Co. of Rockland, working in many capacities throughout the factory for 18 years.
Mr. Mahoney then moved to Florida and most recently was a resident of Centerville, working as a clerk at Kmart in Hyannis. He was an avid fisherman and baseball fan and enjoyed a good game of golf.
Surviving besides his wife are six daughters, Denise D. Sartori of Marlborough, Kim Boucher of Rockland, Robin L. Mahoney of Hyannis, Patricia W. Mahoney of Centerville, Laura Ann Marie Price of Washington and Kelly Bryson of Hanson; a son, Joseph P. Mahoney of Hanson; a sister, Joyce A. Robinson of Rockland; two brothers, James F. Mahoney Jr. of Whitman and Robert G. Mahoney of Henderson, Nev.; 18 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held February 28 at the Magoun Funeral Home, 135 Union St., Rockland. Burial followed in Mr. Vernon Cemetery, Abington.

Catherine M. Phinney, 97
Hyannis - Catherine M. Phinney, 97, a longtime Cape Cod resident, died February 28, 1998 at Cape Cod Hospital, Extended Care Manor in Hyannis.
She was the wife of the late Burton Phinney and the late Ralph Edson.
Mrs. Phinney was born in South Easton. She lived in Brockton for several years until moving to Barnstable in 1946. She later lived in South Yarmouth, Sandwich and Hyannis.
Mrs. Phinney was the former owner of Kitty's Kitchen, a Hyannis restaurant. She later worked as a home health aide until her retirement in her early 80s.
She was an avid reader and gardener and enjoyed being with her family and friends. She was a member of the American Legion.
Mrs. Phinney is survived by one son, Bernard M. Linehan of Sandwich; three daughters, Sheila Mousette of Bourne, Joan Chafe of West Bridgewater, and Kay Chase of West Dennis; 23 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren. She was the mother of the late Richard Linehart, the late Alice Varrieur and the late Geraldine Sweet.
Funeral and burial services were private.
Lydia Pyy, 83
Oklahoma City, Okla. - Lydia Pyy, 83, who leaves a brother and sister on Cape Cod, died February 24, 1998 in the Central Oklahoma Christian Home after an illness.
Born and raised in West Barnstable, she lived on the Cape for most of her life. She moved to Oklahoma in the early 1980s.
Surviving are her daughter, Edie Ghavidel of Oklahoma City, a sister, Annie Kahelin of Hyannis, a brother, Eino Pyy of Centerville; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held March 3 in West Barnstable Cemetery.

Elisabeth F. Smith, 80
Haverhill - Elisabeth F. (Duncan) Smith, 80, a former resident of Osterville, died February 22, 1998 at the Holy Family Hospital & Medical Center in Methuen.
She was the wife of William A. Smith for 53 years.
Born in Everett, Mrs. Smith lived in Haverhill for four years, previously living in Osterville and Melrose. She was a secretary at Melrose Junior High School in the guidance office for 16 years.
Surviving besides her husband are a son, Peter D. Smith of Gaithersburg, Md.; a brother, Richard S. Duncan of Rio Rancho, N.M.; a sister, Norma R. Billington of Melrose; and two grandchildren.
A funeral service was held February 26 at the Robinson Funeral Home in Melrose. Burial was in the Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, West Peabody.

Kathleen Stewart, 81
Hyannis - Kathleen JoAnn (Simpson) Stewart, 81, a resident of Hyannis for 20 years, died at home February 3, 1998 after a nine-month illness.
She was the wife of Walter William "Bill" Stewart.
Mrs. Stewart moved to Hyannis from Tulsa, Okla., 20 years ago, where she was a builder and designer of homes and gardens.
She was the former co-owner of Oklahoma 's Jeep Center.
Surviving besides her husband are two daughters, Carolyn Stewart of Hyannis and Kathleen Rhodes of Mashpee; a son, Michael Stewart of Hyannis; three grandsons; a granddaughter; and four great-grandchildren.
Private graveside services were held on February 6 in Hyannis.
Phoebe B. Wirtanen, 103
Wheaton, Ill. - Phoebe B. Wirtanen, age 103, a resident of Wheaton for fourteen years and former resident of Barnstable, died March 2, 1998.
She was born in Aarmassaari, Finland on July 1, 1894.
Mrs. Wirtanen is survived by her niece, Bertta Metsavainio of Sweden, her nephew, Michael Rolund of Wheaton, and three step-children, Jeannette Anderson and Virginia Wirtanen, both of Portland, Oregon, and Ellsorth Wirtanen of West Barnstable. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Martin Wirtanen and Otto Bjork, as well as eight brothers and sisters.
Services will be held on March 5 at 1 p.m. at the Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main Street, Wheaton, with visitation during the preceding hour. Interment will follow at Wheaton Cemetery.
Jacobus Arends, 75
Indian Orchard - Jacobus "Jim" Arends, 75, a former longtime Cape Cod resident, died of complications from heart surgery on December 3, 1997 at the home of his daughter in Cape Town, South Africa.
He was the husband of Do (Connerman) Arends.
Mr. Arends was born in Eindhoven, Holland. He served in the Royal Dutch Air Force during World War II.
In 1974, Mr. Arends settled in Hyannis. A master printer for more than 60 years, he founded Cape Printing and Litho Works shortly after arriving in Hyannis, which he owned and operated for many years.
Mr. Arends was an accomplished watercolorist and enjoyed classical music and opera. He moved to Indian Orchard in 1997.
Besides his wife, Mr. Arends leaves his son, Tom Arends of Indian Orchard; a daughter, Erna Page of Cape Town, South Africa; and three grandchildren.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. March 14 in Christ the King Parish, St. Jude's Chapel, Route 151, Mashpee.

Therma Blackmer, 89
Hyannis - Therma Loraine Blackmer, 89, a longtime Hyannis resident, died March 9, 1998 at Cape Cod Hospital after a two-month illness.
Born in Middleboro, Miss Blackmer lived in Hyannis most of her life.
She graduated from Barnstable High School. Miss Blackmer began work for New England Telephone as a telephone operator and worked there for 40 years, retiring as a supervisor in 1976. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers.
Surviving are a brother, Vernon Blackmer of South Yarmouth; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held March 12 at Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home in Hyannis. Burial followed in Ancient Cemetery, Yarmouthport.
