Stuart Stevens Sr., 86
Hyannis Stuart Westgate Stevens St., 86, a 37-year electric company employee, died January 12, 1998 at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis, after a brief illness.
He was the husband of the late Alethia (King) Stevens.
Born in Osterville, he was a lifelong resident of the Cape. He worked for the Cape & Vineyard Electric Co./Commonwealth Electric for 37 years, retiring in 1975 as a veteran line supervisor.
Mr. Stevens was a member of the Fraternal Lodge AF & AM of Centerville and the Cotuit Chapter Order of the Eastern Star.
An avid outdoorsman and sports enthusiast, he was a gardener, hunter, golfer and award-winning sport fisherman. He
rarely missed opening day of deer season and held several bluefish catch records.
Surviving are a son, Stuart W. Stevens Jr. of Foxboro; two daughters, Marcia Stevens of Hyannis and Anne Stevens Blomstrom of San Marino, Calif.; a sister, Rowena Emrich of Osterville; four grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held January 16 at the Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home in Hyannis. Burial was in Mosswood Cemetery, Cotuit.

Helen Trask, 92
Osterville - Helen (Hayden) Trask, 92, a former elementary school teacher, died January 15, 1998 at the Cape Regency Nursing Home in Centerville.
She was the wife of the late Dr. Burton W. Trask.
Born in Fall River, she was a graduate of Durfee High School in Fall River and Rhode Island College of Education in Providence.
She was an elementary school teacher in the Barnstable school system for many years and a communicant of Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Osterville.
Surviving are a sister, Margaret Shields of Osterville; several nieces and a nephew.
Burial was private. A memorial mass will be held at a later date.

Edward Trayner, 77
Hyannis Edward Trayner, 77, a longtime resident of Cape Cod, died unexpectedly at home January 17, 1998.
He was the husband of the late Virginia (Condon Hammond) Trayner, the late Mary (Nickerson) Trayner and the late Barbara Mae (Howard) Trayner.
Mr. Trayner was born, raised and educated in the mountains of Pennsylvania . He served in the Army during World War II and after the war he settled in Hyannis. He was employed as a custom carpenter and home builder with the John Lebel Construction Co. of Osterville. He retired in 1975.
He is survived by a son, George E. Trayner of Hyannis; two daughters, Phyllis J. Smolinsky of Pembroke and Sandy Liete of Arizona; a brother, Robert Rayner of Rockland, Md; a sister, Florence McLaughlin of Pittsburgh, Pa.; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was held January 21 in Mosswood Cemetery, Cotuit.

Douglas Woodring, 87
Craigville E. Douglas Woodring, 87, a retired corporate lawyer and local cribbage champion, died January 17, 1998 at Cape Cod Hospital after a long illness.
He was born in Easton, Pa., and graduated from public schools there. He graduated from Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H., and from Rutgers Law School in Newark, N.J.
During World War II, Mr. Woodring served in the Navy as a lieutenant commander.
Mr. Woodring was a corporate lawyer for the Prudential Insurance Co. until his retirement in 1968. During his career he lived in Summit, N.J.
He served as president of both the Springfield Board of Education and the Boys Club of America in Newark, and he contributed in many ways to further the goals of Dartmouth College.
Mr. Woodring had summered on Cape Cod since 1945. After his retirement he moved to Craigville.
He was known as the undisputable, alltime cribbage champion of Craigville and the perennial holder of the village's Cribbage Cup. He loved music and nature and supported environmental programs on the Cape through the Massachusetts Audubon Society and the Nature Conservancy. He was also a member of the Dartmouth Alumni Club and a deacon in the South Congregational Church of Centerville.
Mr. Woodring is survived by his wife, Albertina (Drake) Woodring; two sons, Doug Woodring of Unity, Ohio and Mahlon Woodring of Short Hills, N.J.; two daughters, Deborah H. Woodring of West Hyannis and Nancy Hansen of Spofford, N.H.; 15 grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren.
A memorial service was held January 20 at the South Congregational Church in Centerville.

Bertha Atwood, 82
West Barnstable - Bertha (Johnson) Atwood, 82, a Cape native who worked for New England Telephone for many years, died January 2, 1998 at Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care Community-Pavilion in Hyannis.
She was the wife of the late Francis W. Atwood.
Mrs. Atwood was born in West Barnstable. She graduated from Barnstable High School, where she lettered in four sports and was captain of the 1934 field hockey team.
She worked as a trainer and supervisor for New England Telephone in addition to working in the company's information services department. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
Mrs. Atwood was well-known for her sense of humor.
She is survived by a daughter, Carolyn M. Atwood of West Barnstable; a brother, Edward F. Johnson of West Barnstable; a sister, Esther M. Kurra of West Barnstable and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held January 6 in West Barnstable Cemetery.

Lawrence 'Larry' Bjork, 83
Cotuit Lawrence "Larry" Bjork, 83, a retired tool and die maker, died unexpectedly January 4, 1997 at Falmouth Hospital.
He was the husband of Mary (Moriarty) Bjork.
Born in Malden and raised in Hyde Park, he was educated in Boston schools and attended Wentworth Institute.
Mr. Bjork was a tool and die maker at Honeywell's model divisions in Brighton and Lexington. Some of the components he made were used by NASA in the lunar landing.
A summer resident of Cotuit since 1948, he moved there after his retirement in 1979.
Mr. Bjork was a volunteer at the Cape Cod Technical High School in Harwich. He also enjoyed fishing and was an avid gardener.
Besides his wife, Mr. Bjork is survived by many nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass was celebrated January 7, 1997 at Christ the King Church, Mashpee Commons, followed by burial in Milton Cemetery.

Herbert T. Cannon, 85
Hyannis - Herbert T. Cannon, 85, of Cummaquid and Needham, died December 29, 1997 at Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care CommunityPavilion in Hyannis.
He was the husband of Rita B. (Stefaney) Cannon.
Born in Boston, he lived in Needham and Cummaquid and was a graduate of Northeastern University and Suffolk Law School. He was a lawyer for the John Hancock Life Insurance Co. in Boston until his retirement.
A World War II Army veteran, he was a member of Lt. Manson H. Carter Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2498.
Surviving besides his wife are a daughter, Rita Marie Crimmin of Holden; a son, Robert T. Cannon of Cummaquid; a sister, Alice V. Cannon of Dorchester; a grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was December 31 at the George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home in Needham, followed by a funeral Mass in St. Bartholomew's Church, Needham. Burial was in the Massachusetts National Cemetery
in Bourne.
Martha Colgan, 96
Centerville Martha (Coffey) Colgan, 96, a former special needs teacher in Providence, R.I, and Cotuit, died December 28, 1997 at Cape Regency Nursing Home.
She was the wife of the late Dr. James F. Colgan.
Mrs. Colgan was born in Providence. She graduated from St. Francis Xavier Academy, and she was past president of the school's alumnae association.
She also graduated from Hans Schneider Piano School and Rhode island College of Education, both in Providence.
She was past president of Veridames of Providence College, a former member of Oyster Harbors Club in Osterville and the Beach Club in Centerville, and past president of the Centerville Historical Society.
Mrs. Colgan had been a summer resident of Centerville since 1944 and moved there permanently in 1964.
She is survived by a daughter, Ann Colgan Gillis of Centerville; and nieces and nephews.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. January10 at Our Lady of Assumption Church, Wianno Avenue, Osterville.
