Betty L. Vallee
Betty Lane Clark Vallee, 81, of Winchester, died Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at Winchester Hospital after a long illness. She was the loving wife of Earle Creighton Vallee and the caring mother of Linda Vallee of Alameda, CA and Carol Grande of Jacksonville, Fla. She was also the proud grandmother of Nicholas Clark Grande.
A memorial service for Mrs. Vallee was held June 13 at the Winchester Unitarian Church, attended by her family, friends and former business associates. Born in Montreal, Canada, she moved to Winchester in 1959. Immediately, after settling, the Vallees joined the Winchester Boat Club where Mrs. Vallee indulged her love of swimming and learned to sail. She also loved acting and dancing and soon joined the Unitarian Players and the Arlington Friends of the Drama where she held both leading and supporting roles in more than 30 productions. After several years as a volunteer at the Winchester Hospital, she became a Winton Club Committee member, and for 30 years took an active part in the Winton Cabaret, both as an actress and a dancer.
Her interest in art began early in her life and after graduating from business college she was awarded a scholarship to the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Montreal, where she studied drawing, painting and sculpture for three years. Soon after her arrival in Winchester she joined the Studio Guild and studied under King Coffin. She later continued with her studies at the Cambridge Adult Center and the DeCordova Museum.
Mrs. Vallee was also a member of the Reading Art Association and the Lexington Arts and Crafts Society, Painters Guild, and won many awards for both painting and sculpture. She especially enjoyed on-site workshops taken with Maine artists Don Stone, Martin Oherne and Nancy Howell. Following up on her love of animals, she was introduced to William Velmure, a wild-life artist, and worked with him for five years. She also became interested in the medium of pastels and studied under Mary Jacobs of Winchester. This medium became one of her favorite outlets and earned her many portrait commissions for both people and pets. More recently Mrs. Vallee continued her study of watercolor painting under the talented Winchester artist Carolyn Latanision, who eventually became her close and dear friend.
Mrs. Vallee loved nature and animals, especially the whitetail deer of New Hampshire. In the early spring, as soon as the ice was off the lake, she and her husband would carry bags of food across to Sandy Island in Lake Winnepesauke to feed the deer who were starving after the long winter. She then continued to provide them apples and feed during her vacations at the YMCA family camp on the island. In addition, as a docent at the Stone Zoo, she developed an attachment with her namesake "Betty" the orangutan, and communicated with her by displaying various articles from a large handbag for the animal's inspection following insistent hand signals from the animal.
Mrs. Vallee also had a great love for the sea. This passion started during her childhood vacations spent at her parent's birthplace in St. John, New Brunswick on the Bay of Fundy. It was, therefore, quite natural that this love was transferred to Cape Cod when, in 1950, she and her husband took a bike trip around the Cape and Martha's Vineyard. This trip became a highlight of their lives and the Cape became their beloved vacation home. While their children were younger, the Vallees vacationed in the Centerville area and then for the last 20 years they rented a cottage in North Eastham, overlooking Cape Cod Bay, where she painted, fed the seabirds, collected seashells and frolicked with her poodles.
Throughout her entire life in Winchester, Mrs. Vallee was active as a real-estate broker, first with R.D. Whittimore, then with Swanson Associates and most recently with Hunnemann Coldwell Banker, until her medical problems forced her to retire in 2000. As a broker she was passionately dedicated towards providing each buyer with the home of their dreams and she received many grateful communications for her efforts, both verbal and written.
Mrs. Vallee was a dedicated supporter of the Orenda Wildlife Trust of Cape Cod for many years and memorial donations may be made in her name to the Orenda Wildlife Trust, 1000 Main St., P.O. Box 669, W. Barnstable, MA 02668.
