Frances Kennedy
Frances Kennedy, 95, a resident of Carlton-Willard Village in Bedford, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at her home.
Born in Boston Dec. 29, 1906, she was the daughter of the late Richard and Frances (Collins) Kennedy. Prior to moving to Bedford 15 years ago, she was a longtime resident of Newton Center. A graduate of Wheelock College in Boston she was employed for many years in the Waltham public schools as a kindergarten teacher. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Parish in Newton.
Miss Kennedy is survived by two nieces, Ailsa Kennedy Steinert of Manchester, Mass. and Ann Kennedy O’Neil of New York City. She was predeceased by two sisters, Winnifred and Mary E. Kennedy.
Private graveside services were held Wednesday, Feb. 6 at Holyhood Cemetery in Brookline.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Bedford Funeral Home.
Richard H. Whitcomb
Richard H. Whitcomb, 84, of Bedford, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at the SunBridge Care & Rehabilitation for Concord. He was the husband of the late Alice E. (Phillips) Whitcomb.
Born in Somerville June 19, 1916, he was the son of the late Earl A. and Alfa (Larson) Whitcomb. A longtime Bedford resident, he was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bedford and the Bedford Auxiliary Police Department. He was also active in the Bedford senior citizen programs. Prior to retirement he was employed as a truck driver for Suburban Propane Gas Company.
Mr. Whitcomb is survived by his son, Arnold E. Whitcomb of Woburn; his daughter, Joan B. King of Chelmsford; a brother, Albert Whitcomb of Lexington; a sister, Ruth Crawshaw of Guilford, N.H.; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Elizabeth Whitcomb.
A funeral service was held at the First Baptist Church Saturday, April 7. Interment was in Woodlawn Cemetery, Acton.

Eleanor Small Downey
Eleanor (Bordeaux) Small Downey, 78, of Lexington, and Spencer, died on May 30, 2001, at her Lexington home after a brave battle against leukemia.
Born in Keene, N.H., Mrs. Downey was the daughter of Ray and Esther (Anderson) Bordeaux. She was a graduate of Bane High School and Bridgewater State Teachers College. From 1944 to 1948, she taught elementary school in West Hartford, Conn., and East Brookfield, Mass. From 1961 to 1969, she taught kindergarten in Spencer, Mass., and from 1969 to 1986, she taught first grade in Bedford, Mass.
She leaves her husband of 32 years, Rogers B. Downey; her five children, James W. Small of Burlington, Lesley E. Zorabedian of Reading, Edward M. Small of Spencer, Susan E. Messina of North Reading, and Judi Lentini of Chelmsford; five sisters, Alma Phelan of Marshfield, Lucille Cummings of Barre, Audrey Benoit of St. Paul, Minn., Velna Roberts of Marshfield, and Arline Kinscherf of Tinton Falls, N.J.; one brother, Clark Bordeaux of Barre.
She also leaves eleven grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Her sister, Carmen Bordeaux, and her first husband, John Wesley Small, predeceased her.
A memorial service will be held at noon on Saturday, June 2, in the First Congregational Church, 205 Main Street, Spencer, Mass. Interment will be private. There will be no calling hours.

Helen M. Jewett
Graveside services will be held at the Shawsheen Cemetery, Bedford, at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 7, for Helen M. (Resse) Jewett, 98, of Juno Beach, Fla., formerly of Bedford, who died recently. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
Mrs. Jewett was the aunt of Robert P. Resse of Ocala, Fla.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Bedford Funeral Home.
Dorothy Mussman
Dorothy Mussman, 88, of Bedford, a resident since 1990, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at the Carleton Willard Village. She was the wife of the late Harry V. Mussman.
Born in Holland, Mich. on May 21, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Josephine (Wunsch) Walinder. She graduated from high school in Chicago. Before moving to Bedford she lived in Wheaton, Ill.
While in Bedford she was a member of the Bedford COA. and the Golden Ages and was also affiliated with the First Church of Christ Congregational of Bedford,
She is survived by her son Harry E. Mussman and his wife Libby of Bedford; two step-grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be held at the Carleton Willard Village, 106 Old Billerica Road, Bedford, today, June 7 at 2 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.

Valborg H. Wright
Valborg H. Wright, 98, formerly of Bedford, Arlington and Worcester, died in Woburn, Wednesday, May 23, 2001, after a long period of failing health. She was the wife of the late Lewis M. Wright.
Born May 26, 1903 she was the daughter of the late Preben and Hannah (Samuelsen) Prebensen. She was retired from the Wyman Gordon Company in Worcester. Previously she was a teacher in the Worcester public schools. She was an active member of the Lutheran Church of the Savior in Bedford.
Mrs. Wright is survived by a son, Robert L. Wright of Huntington Station, N.Y.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral was held at the Lutheran Church of the Savior, Bedford, on Friday June 1. Interment was at Cambridge Cemetery in Cambridge.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Bedford Funeral Home.
Patricia A. Thorburn
HARPSWELL, Maine - Patricia A. Thorburn, 76, of Thorburn Cottages Road, died Monday, May 28, 2001, at Parkview Hospital. She was the wife of Robert Thorburn.
Born in Winthrop, she was the daughter of the late Charles Addison and Dorothy Dibble Loan Fisher. She attended the Winthrop schools and graduated from Winthrop High School. She attended Burdett Business School in Boston and studied piano at New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. During World War II she worked for a company that helped detect submarine signals in the water.
Mrs. Thorburn lived in Needham and Stow where she was choir director of the Unitarian Universalist Church. Upon retirement she moved with her husband to Harpswell where she also volunteered at Mid-Coast Hospital in Brunswick. She had a lifelong love of music and enjoyed playing piano. She was also an expert seamstress and needleworker as well as an avid reader and gardener.
Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Nancy D. Thorburn of Winthrop and Victoria R. Patenaude of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a son, Stanley B. Thorburn of Norwich, Conn.; a sister, Martha Flynn of Sandwich; a brother, Robert Fisher of Port Chester, Wash. and a grandson.
A memorial service was held June 1 at the Elijah Kellogg Church, Harpswell Center, with the Rev. James Henry officiating. Interment was in Hillcrest Cemetery, Harpswell.
Arrangements were under the direction of Stetson's Funeral Home, Brunswick.
Barbara Ann Kourian, 69, of Lexington
Barbara Ann Kourian, 69, of Lexington, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at home. She was the wife of George F. "Bud" Kourian.
Mrs. Kourian was the daughter of the late Laura (Anderson) and Winston Lufkin. She was employed as a waitress at the Sheraton Lexington for 20 years.
Besides her husband she is survived by two daughters, Debbie Saia of Burlington and Valerie Feuerstein of Bedford; a son, Scott Kourian, also of Bedford and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 3 at the Douglass Funeral Home, 51 Worthen Road, Lexington. Burial will be in Westview Cemetery, Lexington. Visiting hours will be 9 to 11 a.m., Saturday, at the funeral home.

Leavitt J. Scofield, 92, of Lexington
LEXINGTON — Leavitt Johnson Scofield, 92, died Jan. 18, 2001, at Carleton Willard Village in Bedford. He was the husband of the late Anna Fay (Leonard) Scofield.
He was born in Palmyra, N.Y., and attended the University of Chicago.
Mr. Scofield served in the European Theatre during World War II, for which he received the Bronze Star.
He lived with his family in Kettering, Ohio, Houston, Texas, and Wilton, Conn. He retired from the Mobil Oil Corporation in New York City in 1973. In later years he and his late wife divided their time between Madison, Conn. and New Smyrna Beach, Fla. He resided in the Boston area since 1990, and lived at Carleton Willard Village for several years.
He is survived by a son, John Scofield of Katonah, N.Y.; a daughter, Anne Scofield Nuss of Lexington and two grandchildren.
A service was held at the burial site in Wilton, Conn.
Arrangements were under the care of the Douglass Funeral Home, Lexington.
Doris F. Donovan of Arlington
Doris F. Donovan, of Arlington, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001 after a short illness. She was the wife of the late Joseph Donovan for over 50 years.
Born in Thomaston, Maine, she lived in Arlington for more than 50 years. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Donovan is survived by a daughter, Karen A. Bessone of Bedford; a son, Kevin J. Donovan of Colebrook, N.H.; a son-in-law, Carlo Bessone; a daughter-in-law, Marlana Donovan; one sister, Marion Pitman of West Boylston and many nieces and nephews. A sister, Blanche Rogers, died before her.
Funeral services were held from the Keefe Funeral Home, Arlington, with a funeral Mass in St. Agnes Church. Interment was in Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
Agnes M. Arey, 86, of North Chelmsford
CHELMSFORD — Agnes M. (Thurber) Arey, 86, of North Chelmsford, formerly of Billerica, died May 28, 2001, at Lowell General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Harry Arey Sr.
She was born in Somerville on Sept. 26, 1914, the daughter of the late Reid and Maude (Earle) Thurber. She graduated from Somerville High School.
Mrs. Arey was employed as a supervisor at Microwave in Burlington for many years.
She retired to Brooksville, Fla., where she lived for 15 years before returning to Massachusetts.
She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church in North Chelmsford. Mrs. Arey was also active in B.A.S.H., an organization for the blind in Brooksville.
She is survived by a son, Harry Arey Jr. of Hudson, N.H.; two daughters, Corinne E. McKee of North Chelmsford, and Pauline M. Brien and her husband Dennis of Merrimack, N.H.; a brother, Jesse Thurber of Oxford, Maine; 19 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was also the sister of the late Harold, Gladys and Reid Thurber Jr.
A memorial service was held June 4, in St. John the Evangelist Church in North Chelmsford. Interment will be held at a later date in Fox Hill Cemetery, Billerica.
