Donald S. Hansen, 66, of Bedford
Donald S. Hansen, 66, of Bedford, died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, at his home. He was the husband of Lorraine M. (Gibbings) Hansen.
Born in Union City, N.J. Jan. 20, 1935, he was the son of the late William and Helen (Kulagowski) Hansen. He was a 1953 graduate of Bogota High School in New Jersey and a 1955 graduate of Newark College of Engineering. He earned his master’s degree from the University of Illinois in 1964.
A retired lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force, he served from 1958 to 1978. In 1974 he received the Meritorious Service Medal.
Prior to retirement he was employed as a mechanical engineer for Raytheon, where he worked from 1978 to 1998. He was a member of St. Michael’s Parish in Bedford.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Hansen is survived by a son, Christian M. Hansen of Boston; three daughters, Deborah A. and Susan A. Hansen, both of Bedford and Catherine A. Hansen Oram of Westford; a brother, William Hansen Jr. of River Edge, N.J. and three grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was celebrated Oct. 29 at St. Michael’s Church
Memorial contributions in his name may be made to the St. Michael’s Building Fund, 90 Concord Road, Bedford, MA 01730.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Bedford Funeral Home.
Irene A. Reardon, 68, of Belmont
Irene A. (Ballou) Reardon, 68, of Belmont, died Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, at her home. She was the wife of Charles T. Reardon Jr.
Mrs. Reardon was born in Waltham and prior to retirement was employed as a real estate agent with Hunneman Real Estate.
In addition to her husband she is survived by two sons, Charles T. Reardon III of Grafton and Paul J. Reardon of So. Boston; two daughters, Mary E. Lewis of West Newton and Martha R. DeVoe of Holliston; a niece, Anne Marie Appleton of Nashua, N.H.; six grandchildren; two sisters, Helen Simmons of Wells, Maine and Marilyn Ballou of Lexington; five brothers, Joseph Ballou of Bethlehem, Conn., Leo Ballou of Portsmouth, N.H., Frank Ballou of Hollis, N.H., Donald Ballou of San Diego, Calif. and Phillip Ballou of Bedford and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held today, Nov. 15, at 9 a.m. from the Stanton Funeral Home, 786 Mt. Auburn St., Watertown with a funeral Mass celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, Common St., Belmont. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Interment will be in Holyhood Cemetery.

Lydia B. Edwards, MD, 96, of Bedford
BEDFORD — Lydia B. Edwards, MD, 96, died Nov. 7, 2001, at Carleton Willard Village in Bedford.
She was born in Berkeley, Calif., on June 6, 1905, the daughter of the late Edmund B. and Rhoda (Walker) Edwards. Dr. Edwards was educated at the Ecole Superieure in Brussels, Belgium, the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria, the University of Rome and the University of Paris. She graduated from Radcliffe, Class of 1927, and Johns Hopkins Medical School in 1932, where she later served as director of the Pediatric Outpatient Department and director of the Children’s Tuberculosis Clinic.
In 1943, she was appointed to the U.S. Public Health Service, at the time, the only woman to be a commissioned officer therein, and served, working with UNRRA for the duration of the war in Yugoslavia.
In 1946, Dr. Edwards, by the a colonel, joined the National Institutes of Health Tuberculosis Research Program in Bethesda, Md., and in 1948, was asked by the World Health Organization to help expand the UNICEF program to stamp out tuberculosis throughout the world. From 1948 to 195, she was based in Copenhagen, Denmark, and during that time traveled throughout Europe, India, Russia, and Japan to support and oversee the program.
From 1955 until her retirement in 1973, Dr. Edwards continued her work with the Public Health Service in Bethesda, living in Washington, D.C. During retirement, she served as a tutor at the Oyster School, a public school on 29th Street in Washington. She also served as an off-campus interviewer for applicants to Radcliffe and Harvard and lectured on epidemiology at Johns Hopkins School of Epidemiology. She was honored by Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health as a " Hero of Public Health " and by Radcliffe College for her work in medicine and epidemiological research.
Dr. Edwards was an active member of Friends of the National Zoo, The Women’s National Democratic Club, the Chevy Chase Club, The Club of Colonial Dames and Radcliffe and Johns Hopkins alumni groups.
In 1993, she moved to the Carleton Willard Retirement Village in Bedford. In 1994, she celebrated her 90th birthday with her immediate family walking the famed, much painted cliff on Monhegan Island, Maine, which her father had bought during the Spanish Civil War, when stationed on a U.S. Naval vessel assigned to protect the New England coast of the United States.
Dr. Edwards is survived by her nephew, Edmund Edwards Ackerson and her niece, Rhoda Ackerson Weyr, and 29 members of following generations who claim her as if grandmother and great-grandmother.
A funeral Mass was celebrated Nov. 10, at St. Michael’s Church in Bedford. Graveside services were private.

Betty Lou Pray, 68, of Bedford
BEDFORD — Betty Lou Pray, 68, died suddenly Nov. 9, 2001, at the Emerson Hospital in Concord. She was the wife of James B. Pray.
She was born in Arlington on June 24, 1933, the daughter of the late John W. and Ethel (Andrews) Brenton. Mrs. Pray was a graduate of Lexington High School, Class of 1951. She lived in Bedford for the past 40 years.
Mrs. Pray was employed as an administrative assistant in private health care.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Lexington.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, John W. Pray and his wife Susan of Chelmsford, and Peter B. Pray and his wife Eileen of Groton; a daughter, Debra Smoske and her husband Lawrence Smoske Jr. of Burlington; two sisters, Gloria Brenton of Bedford, and Elaine Wetmore of Lexington; and six grandchildren.
A funeral service was held Nov. 14, from the Bedford Funeral Home.

Herman Rice Sr., 72, a 34-year resident of Bedford
Herman Rice, Sr., 72, a 34-year resident of Bedford died at Emerson Hospital in Concord on Monday, Nov. 5, 2001. He was the husband of the late Mary Rice of Bedford.
Born in Birmingham, Ala., he was the son of the late Luzell Rice and Liphena Lamarr. He served the U.S. Air Force for 24 years, retiring as a technical sergeant, and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He enjoyed movies, sports, dancing, cars and spending time with his grandchildren.
Mr. Rice was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, The American Legion, NCO, and The Retired Enlisted Association. He worked at the Hanscom Commissary and was a faithful employee of Raytheon as a data processor for more than 22 years.
Mr Rice is survived by two daughters, Cassandra Ann Harris of Atlanta, Ga. and Carolyn Glasper of Lowell; a son Herman Rice Jr., of Billerica; two grandchildren; a son-in-law Larry Glasper Sr. of Lowell; three sisters, Martha Rae Rice, Carrie Lou Rice, and Rose Lee Rice, all of California; a brother Charles Rice of Alabama; five sisters-in-law, Cleola Austin of Colorado, Estella Palmer of Pennsylvania, A, Thelma Hunter and Dorothy Alexander, both of Georgia and Mabel Baldwin of New Jersey; two brothers-in-law James Harris, Jr., and Jerome Harris of Pennsylvania; a devoted niece Janet Fralin, and many other relatives and special friends including Sonny and Doris Russell and Hazel and Pete Williams.
Funeral services were held in the Immanual Baptist Church of Bedford on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001 with the Rev. Clifford McCabe officiating. Fellow members of Sullivan Post #1628 acted as honor guard. Burial was in Shawsheen Cemetery where an honor guard from the U.S. Air Force played Taps and presented his family with the American flag that draped his casket.

Winslow E. Perry, of Bedford
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2001, at the Shawsheen Funeral Home in Bedford for Winslow E. Perry who died at his home in Bedford on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2001. The Rev. John Eric Gibbons of the First Parish Church in Bedford officiated at the ceremony.
Mr. Perry was a sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II serving in the N. African Campaign.
He was the husband of Helen (Keay) Lundberg of Bedford and father of Joan Souders of Texas, Barbara Bullis of Indiana and Michael K. Perry of Randolph. He is also survived by two grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Robert J. Mitchell, 74, of Burlington
BURLINGTON — Robert J. Mitchell, 74, died Nov. 11, 2001, after a brief illness. He was the husband of Eleanor (Gannon) Mitchell.
He graduated from Malden Catholic High School and received a degree from Boston College in 1951.
Mr. Mitchell was a veteran of the United States Navy.
For 33 years, Mr. Mitchell was a salesman with UARCO/Standard Register.
He was a former Cub Scout Committee chairman, an usher at St. Malachy’s Church, and a volunteer with the Woburn Meals-on-Wheels. He was a member of the Meadow Brook Golf Club of Reading, the Woburn Boys & Girls Club, and the Burlington Swim & Tennis Club.
In recent years he was involved in fund raising for the Boston College Alumni Association and the M.L. Carr Golf Tournament to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four sons, Robert of Methuen, John of Whitinsville, William of Burlington, and David of Malden; three daughters, Ann of Medford, Carol of Bedford, and Marie of Bedford; and a sister, Regina Cantella of Winchester. He was also the brother of the late John R. Mitchell.
A funeral will be held at 8 a.m. today, Nov. 15, from the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home in Burlington, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Malachy’s Church. Interment was in Pine Haven Cemetery, Burlington.

John W. Guppy
BEDFORD — John W. Guppy, 99, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002 at Carleton Willard Village in Bedford. He was the husband of the late Ernestine (Moore) Guppy.
He was the son of the late George and Florence (Gray) Guppy.
Mr. Guppy was employed as a civil engineer before his retirement.
He is survived by one son, John W. Guppy Jr. of Lexington; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was also the grandfather of the late Audrey Works.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Feb. 2, at St. Paul’s Church, 100 Pine Hill Road, Bedford. Interment was private.

Bernice H. ‘Bunny’ Bresnihan
CHELMSFORD — Bernice H. " Bunny " Bresnihan, 73, formerly of Lexington, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at her home. She was the wife of the late John Bresnihan.
She was born in West Barnstable on June 15, 1928, the daughter of the late Louis Homan and Helen (Bentinnen) Homan.
Mrs. Bresnihan was a communicant of St. Brigid’s Church in Lexington.
She is survived by a son, Daniel P. Bresnihan and his friend Chris Yelding of Washington, Conn.; two daughters, Debora A. Sullivan and her husband Joseph of Bedford, and Karen G. Chandler of Weare, N.H.; eight grandsons; and many nieces and nephews. She was also the mother of the late John F. Bresnihan, and the mother-in-law of the late Lois Bresnihan.
A funeral service was held Jan. 29, from the Douglass Funeral Home in Lexington, followed by a funeral Mass in St. Brigid’s Church. Interment was in Crocker Park Cemetery, West Barnstable.
