Leonard R. Hayes Jr.

BEDFORD - Leonard Ralph Hayes Jr., died Aug. 17, 2000, at the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital in Bedford. He was the husband of Helen S. (McMahan) Hayes.

He was born in Boston in 1929, the son of the late Leonard R. Sr. and Mary T. (Wardlaw) Hayes. He attended Lexington schools, graduating from Lexington High School in 1948.

Mr. Hayes served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. Following the service, he owned and operated Hayes and Shea Cadillac and Oldsmobile in Boston and Brookline.

Following his retirement, he was employed by the Bedford Public Library for 25 years and the Bedford Fire Department for 15 years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Sheila E. Haley and her husband Dr. John Haley of Peterborough, N.H., and Sandra E. Martin and her husband Cornelius W. of Chelmsford; two brothers, Ronald W. Hayes of Maine, and Dr. H.R. Hayes of Newburyport; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held Aug. 21, in the Shawsheen Funeral Home in Bedford with the Rev. Arlene Bodge of the Chilmark Community Church officiating. Committal prayers were in Shawsheen Cemetery, Bedford.

Stanley R. Fijal

BEDFORD - Stanley R. Fijal, died Sept. 18, 2000 at Emerson Hospital in Concord. He was the husband of Florence A. (Stander) Fijal.

He was born in Boston on Jan. 25, 1914, the son of the late Stanley and Sophia (Bramowski) Fijal. He was raised in Chicago, Ill.

Mr. Fijal was a retired machinist from the General Electric plants in Lynn and Everett.

He was a member of the International Union of Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers and also had been a member of St. Michael Church in Bedford.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Robert S. Fijal of Bedford; a daughter, Joan E. Tillson and her husband Robert of Naples, Fla.; and three grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Sept. 22, in St. Michael Church in Bedford. Interment was in Shawsheen Cemetery, Bedford.

Arrangements were under the care of the Bedford Funeral Home, Bedford.

Elizabeth Edwards

BEDFORD - Elizabeth Edwards, 68, died Sept. 15, 2000, at Meadow Green Nursing Center in Waltham. She was the wife of the late William Edwards.

She was born in Medford, the daughter of Russell and Annie Hayward.

Mrs. Edwards loved the outdoors, the White Mountains, bird watching, and in her early years she was very artistic and loved to draw.

She is survived by a son, Keith Edwards and his wife Karen of Billerica; a daughter, Cindy Royal and her husband David of Groton; a brother, George Hayward of Medford; a sister, Priscilla McDewell of Lexington; and four grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Sept. 19, from the Douglass Funeral Home in Lexington. Interment was in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge.

Thomas W. Davin

BEDFORD - Thomas W. Davin, 90, died Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2000, at his home. He was the husband of Dorothea (Taylor) Davin.

Born in Boston Nov. 5, 1909, he was the son of the late Charles J. and Agnes (Driscoll) Davin. He moved to Bedford in 1950 and worked for the Boston Naval Shipyard as a machinist. He was a scout leader in Bedford in the 1950s and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He also worked for B.A.S.F., was a volunteer at the VA Hospital in Bedford and was a member of St. Michael's Parish. He spent many of his winters in North Port, Fla.

Besides his wife, Mr. Davin is survived by two sons, Thomas W. Davin Jr. and his wife Beverley of Waverly, Va., and William R. Davin and his wife Suzanne of Reston, Va.; a daughter, Kathleen E. Forster and her husband Joseph of Sandown, N.H.; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son,, Charles J. Davin.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Friday, Sept. 1 at St. Michael's Church in Bedford. Interment was in Shawsheen Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the V.N.A. Hospice Middlesex-East, 12 Beacon St., P.O. Box 80485, Stoneham, MA 02180.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Bedford Funeral Home.

Bernice Callahan

BEDFORD - Bernice (Hunt) Callahan, died Aug. 25, 2000. She was the wife of the late Edward Callahan.

Mrs. Callahan is survived by two sons, Charles Callahan and Daniel Callahan, both of Bedford; a daughter, Eileen Donadio of Westford; a brother, Hugh Hunt of Connecticut; two sisters, Evelyn Hunt of Bedford, and Marie Callahan of Chelmsford; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held Aug. 28, in St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Bedford, with the Rev. Francis Fornaro officiating. Committal prayers were in Shawsheen Cemetery, Bedford.

Arrangements were under the care of the Shawsheen Funeral Home, Bedford.

Giuseppe P. Bessone

CAMBRIDGE - Giuseppe P. Bessone, 93, a longtime Cambridge resident, died Sept. 5, 2000, at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge. He was the husband of Alice (Morazzi) Bessone.

He was born in Frieburg, Germany on Dec. 5, 1906, the son of the late Carlo and Louise (Rigazio) Bessone.

He was employed as a utility worker at W.R. Grace, and was a member of the Quarter Century Club at W.R. Grace.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Carlo Bessone and his wife Karen of Bedford; a daughter, Lucy Zuzolo and her husband Frank of Cambridge; three sisters, Margaret Frassa of Cambridge, Madeline Moscardini of Meredith, N.H., and Maria Arena of Denville, N.J.; and four grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 8, in St. John's Church in Cambridge. Interment will be in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge. Visitation, Thursday, 4-8 p.m.

For those who wish, contributions in Mr. Bessone's memory may be made to the Saint John's Renovation Fund.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Keefe Funeral Home Inc.

Dorothy Bartels

Dorothy Jane (Burnett) Bartels, 95, formerly of Newton Centre and Osterville, died Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2000, at Carleton-Willard Village in Bedford. She was the wife of 57 years of the prominent physician Dr. Elmer C. Bartels of the Lahey Clinic, who died in 1982.

Born in Hamilton, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Coy E. and Beulah Mae Burnett. She grew up in Hamilton and attended the local schools and junior college. In 1935 her husband joined the Lahey Clinic as a staff physician and thyroid specialist. Mrs. Bartels and her family lived in Newton and were members of the First Baptist Church. She was president of the New England Baptist Hospital Women's Auxiliary, deacon of the First Baptist Church, president of the Newton Centre Women's Club and was an active member of the Brae Burn Country Club in Newton. She moved to Osterville in 1968 where she was a member of the Wianno Club. In 1982 she moved to Carleton-Willard Village in Bedford.

Mrs. Bartels is survived by three daughters, Jane Lee Bauckman of Needham, Patricia Ann and her husband Edward Hastings of Stevensville, Mont., and Dorothy Mae and her husband Eliot W. Denault of Concord, Mass. and Florida; a son, Commissioner Elmer C. and his wife Mary of Bedford; 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was mother-in-law of the late Richard C. Bauckman.

A memorial service was held Wednesday, Aug. 23 at Carleton-Willard Village.

Donations in memory of Dorothy J. Bartels may be made to The First Baptist Church in Newton, 848 Beacon St., Newton Centre, MA 02159 or the Greater Boston Chapter of the National Spinal Cord Injury Association, New England Rehabilitation Hospital, Two Rehabilitation Way, Woburn, MA 01801.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Bedford Funeral Home.

Florence E. Baker

BEDFORD - Florence Elizabeth (Schedley) Baker, 94, died Sept. 7, 2000 at the Carleton Willard Village in Bedford. She was the wife of the late Nelson B. Baker and William B. Saunders.

She was born in Providence, R.I., on May 26, 1906, the daughter of the late William and Minnie F. (Cummings) Schedley.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 23, at the First Baptist Church of Bedford, 151 Concord Road, Bedford. Friends are invited to attend.

For those who wish, contributions in Mrs. Baker's memory may be made to the Carleton Willard Village Reserve Fund, 100 Old Billerica Road, Bedford, MA 01730.

Arrangements were under the are of the Bedford Funeral Home, Bedford.

Robert E. Glendon

Robert E. Glendon of North Andover, formerly of Winchester, died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, in Lexington.

He was educated in the Winchester public schools and a member of the class of 1948 at the University of Massachusetts. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945, stationed in India near the Burmese border. He was a cryptographer flying in support of British troops fighting Japanese invaders. He worked at the U.S. Navy Underwater Sound Laboratory in New London, Conn., the National Aeronautic & Space Administration in Cambridge, RCA Corp. in Burlington and AVCO Corp. in Everett.

Mr. Glendon is survived by a brother, Richard R. Glendon of Lincoln; two nephews, Steven Cutter of Charleston, S.C., and Michael Glendon of Cambridge and three nieces, Patricia Desmarais of Randolph, Ellen Murphy of Bedford and Natasha Crossley of Merrimac. He was predeceased by a sister Elizabeth Cutter of Bedford.

A memorial service will be held Monday, Aug. 14 at the Douglass Funeral Home, 51 Worthen Road, Lexington, at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Interment will follow in Wildwood Cemetery, Winchester.

Vivian MacNeill

ACTON - Vivian (Schjenken) MacNeill, 71, died July 12, 2000, at her home following a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Robert C. MacNeill, who died in 1974.

She was born in Echo Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota to the late Bemt and Mae (Jensen) Schjenken.

Mrs. MacNeill recently retired from L3 Communications ESSCO of Concord, where she was employed as an executive administrative assistant.

She is survived by two daughters, Cynthia Taylor of Barre, and Nancy Barbieri of Bedford; a sister, Myrtle Merhhoff of Renville, Minn.; their families and many wonderful friends.

A funeral service was held July 17, in the Hancock United Church of Christ in Lexington. Interment was private.

Arrangements were under the care of the Bedford Funeral Home, Inc., Bedford.
