Everett H. Urquhart

ARLINGTON — Everett H. Urquhart, 83, died Wednesday, March 1, 2006, at the Neville Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Cambridge. He was the husband of Barbara A. (Chase) Urquhart.

He was born in Arlington, the son of the late Wesley C. and Josephine (Goodwin) Urquhart. Mr. Urquhart was a 1941 graduate of Arlington High School.

Mr. Urquhart enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in August 1942, and served until November 1945, with the rank of corporal.

He was employed for many years as a supervisor in the Wire Department of the F.S. Payne Elevator Company in Cambridge, retiring in 1988.

Mr. Urquhart was a longtime member of the Heights Baptist Church in Arlington, and was a former usher and a member of the Standing Committee, and a member ofthe Arlington Elks Club.

In addition to his wife of 59 years, he is survived by a son, Stephen P. Urquhart and his wife Katherine M. of Arlington; a daughter, Nancy J. Traverse and her husband Paul G. of Milford; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Beatrice L. Gjertson in Nebraska.

He was also the brother of the late William G. Urquhart, Wesley C. Urquhart, Ruth F. Melendy and Virginia Downes.

Funeral service and burial were private.

Charles M. Sego

ARLINGTON - Charles M. Sego, born Oct. 30, 1928, in Florence, Ala., died Monday, March 6, 2006, from complications due to a stroke. He was the husband of Mary Sego.

Mr. Sego was an accomplished musician who taught in colleges and public school systems for more than 30 years. His musical calling began in his youth focusing around family and religious spheres of life.

Upon graduation from high school in 1945, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the 82nd Airborne Division as a unit clerk with the additional duty of post chapel organist. He completed his military service as a technical Sergeant (F-6) while serving in post-World War II Italy.

Mr. Sego continued his secondary education and affiliation as a church organist in Alabama at Samford University and Southern Methodist University in Texas. Subsequent graduate studies brought him and his family to Boston, where he taught music at Hanscom Field Air Force Base, and later in the Boston Public School system.

He served concurrently as organist and choir director for churches in Arlington, Medford, Newton and finally the First Congregational Church of Melrose. Mentoring students to develop their appreciation of music as an integral part of life is his lasting legacy.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, John Sego; and a sister, Jean (Sego) Murphree.

Burial will take place in the National Cemetery in Bourne.

A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.

Arrangements were under the care of the Saville & Grannan Funeral and Cremation Service, Arlington.

Betty A. (Burke) McDermott, 82

ARLINGTON - Betty A. (Burke) McDermott, 82, died Friday, March 3, 2006, at the Courtyard Nursing Center in Medford following a lengthy illness. She was the wife of Joseph W. McDermott.

She was born in Cambridge and had been a longtime Arlington resident.

Mrs. McDermott was active in the establishment of the Irish American Club of Arlington and was a charter member.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Joseph W. McDermott Jr. and his wife Joan, and Richard P. McDermott, all of Arlington; a daughter, Dorothy E. Hudson and her husband Donald J., of Yorktown, Va.; seven grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy E. Murphy of Arlington.

A funeral was held March 9 from the DeVito Funeral Home in Arlington, followed by a funeral Mass in St. Agnes Church. Burial was in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Arlington.

William C. Hartford, 76

ARLINGTON - William C. Hartford, 76, formerly of Cambridge and Brighton, died Wednesday, March 8, 2006. He was the husband of Marilyn (Beck) Hartford.

He was born in Cambridge.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.

Mr. Beck was a retired police captain for Con Rail, and a retired security officer at Lahey Clinic.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, William C. Hartford of Arlington; a daughter, Karen A. Hartford of Arlington; a brother, Paul Hartford of Medford; a sister, Marie Thomas in Florida; many nieces and nephews; as well as a longtime friend, Bill W.

A funeral was held March 11 from the Keefe Funeral Home in Arlington, followed by a funeral Mass at St. Agnes Church. Burial was in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Arlington.

Lillian O. (Blouin) Gagne, 94

CAMBRIDGE - Lillian O. (Blouin) Gagne, 94, of Cambridge and Arlington, died Thursday, March 2, 2006, in Florida. She was the wife of the late Thomas J. Gagne.

She was born in Illinois.

Mrs. Gagne was employed by the Hood Rubber Co. as an assembler.

She is survived by two sons, Richard Gagne of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Thomas W. Gagne of Arlington; a daughter, Anne Marie Doiron of The Villages, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held March 10 at the Keefe Funeral Home in Arlington. Burial was in Cambridge Cemetery.

Michael B. Filisky, 59

ARLINGTON - Michael B. Filisky, 59, died Thursday, March 9, 2006, of an apparent heart attack. He was the husband of Ingrid Bartinique.

He was the son of the late Bernard and Randalyn Filicsky. His lifelong passions for learning, science and the performing arts inspired his life. To everything he pursued, Mr. Filisky brought mirth, wit, love of word-play and a spontaneous dedication to bringing the enthusiasm of learning to everyone he met.

After earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Illinois, he first was employed as a stage manager in New York City with the Claude Kipnis Mime Company in the 1970s.

He had his own successful political/feminist mime company, first in Detroit and later in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and became a well-reviewed solo performance artist.

After moving to Cambridge in 1981, he began a career transition into science, working under Dr. Ruth Turner at Harvard University’s Museum of Comparative Zoology, and as a science educator and assistant curator of education at the New England Aquarium.

Mr. Filisky authored the children’s books, "Living Lights: Creatures That Glow in the Dark," and "Sterling: Rescue of a Baby Harbor Seal," with Sandra Verrill White, as well as the field guide, "Peterson First Guide to Fishes of North America," with Sarah B. Landry and Roger Tory Peterson.

He received a doctorate from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education in 1999, focusing on how children’s understanding of natural selection affects their grasp of evolutionary processes. He continued his career at the Harvard/Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics Science Media Group and Science Education Department.

At the time of his death, he was collaborating with Harvard colleagues on a planned symposium on the connections between art and science. In all his endeavors, Mr. Filisky was passionate about social justice; he was a contributor to and editor of the magazine, "Science for the People" in the 1980s, and more recently was a committed member of Concord Academy’s Diversity and Equity Committee.

Robert E. "Unk" Cain, 79

PENACOOK, N.H. - Robert E. "Unk" Cain, 79, formerly of Arlington and Wilmington, died on Friday, March 12, 2006, at his residence. He is survived by his wife, Marion (Powers) Cain.

He was born in Arlington on Jan. 13, 1927, the son of the late James F. Cain and the late Ethel M. (Taylor) Cain.

Mr. Cain served in the U.S. Army during World War II

Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Fred F. Cain, Inc. Chrysler-Plymouth in Wilmington as a service manager.

He was a member of Wilmington V.F.W. Post 2458 and the Wilmington American Legion Post 136.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Mary Tripi and her husband Steve of Lexington, Marion Martinson and her husband Don of Leominster, Donna Cain of Nashua, N.H., Robert Cain Jr. and his wife Susan of Arlington, Linda Friberg and her husband Rick of Penacook, N.H., and Helen Capps and her husband Jim of Penacook, N.H.; 21 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews; and a sister-in-law, Anna T. (Walsh) Cain of Stoneham.

He was also the father-in-law of the late George Osman, and the brother of the late Fred F. Cain of Wilmington.

His funeral will be held at 8:45 a.m. today, March 16, from the W.S. Cavanaugh & Son Funeral Home, 374 Main St. (Route 38), Wilmington, followed by a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Thomas Church. Burial will follow in the family lot Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington.

Dr. Eda Polcari Angelo

CAMBRIDGE - Dr. Eda Polcari Angelo, 99, a Cambridge physician for more than five decades, died Wednesday, March 1, 2006, in her Cambridge home. She was the wife of the late Dr. Gaspar Angelo, who died in 1971.

She was born June 10, 1906, in the North End of Boston of parents who immigrated to the United States from Italy. She graduated from Girls Latin School and in 1930 from Tufts College Medical School. Later she lived in Arlington, where her father ran a grocery store

Dr. Angelo went to Tufts Medical School in 1924. There were 10 women in her class. They stuck together and called themselves hen-medics. After graduation in 1930, three of them opened a practice together. She got more training in anesthesia, did general practice with a specialty in obstetrics and gynecology. She opened gynecology clinics and was on the staff of the New England Hospital for Women and Children, which was run by and for women. Later, she was a staff member at Mount Auburn Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital.

Following her marriage, she and her husband lived in Cambridge, where she was practicing as an allergist.

She enjoyed traveling around the world. She also enjoyed flowers, and designed a prize-winning garden in Lincoln, where she moved in 1957.

Dr. Angelo became a teacher in Ikebana, the ancient art of Japanese flower arranging and became an expert silversmith. She also did charity work, specifically raising money for Bayride Residence and Montrose School.

After her husband died in 1971, Dr. Angelo moved back to Cambridge where she had a condominium overlooking the Charles River that she shared with her eldest daughter, Dr. Eda Joanne Angelo, a psychiatrist in Boston.

She is also survived by another daughter, Carolyn Angelo.

A devoted Catholic, she attended daily Mass at St. Paul's Church for many years. Her home photo gallery included photos of her with Pope John Paul II, Bernard Cardinal Law, Humberto Cardinal Medeiros and Bishop Thomas V. Daily.

Auxiliary Bishop John P. Boles and seven other priests celebrated a Mass of Christian Burial March 4, at St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church near Harvard Square, where she had been a parishioner since moving to Cambridge in 1971. Burial was in Mount Auburn Cemetery.

Ann B. Diaz

MARSTON MILLS — Ann B. (Coiley) Diaz, 73, died Saturday, March 24, 2007, at Kindred Hospital in Waltham. She was the wife of Kevin M. Diaz.

She was born in Boston and was a longtime former resident of Arlington.

Before her retirement, she was the owner of Heritage Trail Antiques of Winchester.

In addition to her husband of 52 years, she is survived by a son, Mark Diaz of Arlington; a daughter, Suzanne Moran and her husband James of Belmont; two grandchildren; and a brother, William Coiley and his wife Susan in Florida.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held March 27 in the Church of St. Camillus in Arlington. Burial was in Cambridge Catholic Cemetery, Cambridge.

Arrangements were under the care of the Berglund, Williams, O’Brien Funeral Home, Arlington.

Andrew Joseph Fichera, M.D.

JACKSON, N.H. — Andrew Joseph Fichera, formerly of Winchester, a well respected psychiatrist, died Monday, March 19, 2007, at his home in Jackson, after a battle with acute lymphocytic leukemia.

Formerly of Winchester, Dr. Fichera most recently lived in Jackson, as well as in West Dennis. He was the husband of Joanne T. (McLaughlin) Fichera.

Dr. Fichera was born in Somerville in 1928, the son of Benedetto and Antonia (Giacobbe) Fichera. A graduate of Malden Catholic High School, he received his undergraduate degree from Boston College, and completed his medical studies, cum laude, at Georgetown University School of Medicine.

A clinical professor of psychiatry for Tufts University School of Medicine at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Brighton, he was an attending physician there from 1955 until 2002, while also maintaining a private practice in Winchester. Dr. Fichera was on the staff of Winchester, Malden, Sancta Maria, Cambridge and Choate hospitals.

Dr. Fichera was a member of the medical honor society, Alpha Omega Alpha, the American Medical Association, the American Psychiatric Association and the Massachusetts Medical Society. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.

In addition to caring for his patients over the course of his career, Dr. Fichera comforted, advised and helped numerous individuals, including friends, colleagues and family.

Dr. Fichera married his high school sweetheart in 1951, and after completing his medical internship, served as a captain in the United States Air Force for two years in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. Returning to Massachusetts, he and his wife settled in Winchester in 1959, where they raised four children.

He began bringing his young children to Jackson in the 1960s, teaching them all to ski; his enthusiasm for downhill skiing continued throughout his life. He loved the Jackson area, and after his diagnosis, he and his wife enjoyed winters there, spending summers in West Dennis. He loved his homes and gardens, and enjoyed spending much of his free time maintaining and improving his properties.

The child of Sicilian immigrants, Dr. Fichera embraced his heritage, sharing it with family and friends. Holiday celebrations inevitably included recipes passed down from Sicilian ancestors, treats from local Italian bakeries and delis, stories from the old country and language instruction in Sicilian and Italian.

In addition to his wife of 55 years, Dr. Fichera leaves his children. Andrew Fichera of Hingham, Susanna Mahan and her husband Michael of Arlington and Bowdoinham, Maine, John Fichera and his wife Jane of Jackson, N.H., and Joanne Lortie and her husband Paul of Churchville, Md.; seven grandchildren; his sister, Rita Rich of Medford; and many nieces and nephews.

He was also the brother of the late Rose Fichera and Alfred Fichera, and the father-in-law of the late Patty Sue (Chumbley) Fichera.

A funeral was held on Saturday from the Gaffey Funeral Home in Medford Square, followed by a funeral Mass in St. Joseph’s Church.

Dr. George L. Marcoulier

BELLVILLE, Texas — Dr. George L. Marcoulier, of Bellville, Texas, formerly of Canaan, N.H., and Arlington, died Thursday Jan. 4, 2007 at home in Bellville.

Born Sept. 8, 1930 in North Attleboro, he was raised by Edward J. and Annie Esther Day in Arlington, from age 3, attended schools in Arlington and graduated from Arlington High School in 1948 where he lettered in football as their quarterback.

He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in January 1951 and was stationed at Lackland Field in San Antonio, Texas. He received radio operator training at Keesler Field in Biloxi, Miss., where he met his future wife, L. Sue Myers, a student at Mississippi Southern College. They were married Dec 24, 1951 at Goodwater Church in Magee, Miss.

He was then stationed at Randolph Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas, where he met with his B-29 bomber crew for training. Then to Forbes AFB in Topeka, Kansas before being transferred overseas to Okinawa, Kadena AFB. In July 1952, his crew, the 307th Bomb Wing Squadron, flew 31 bombing missions over North Korea.

He returned to the U.S. in February 1953, and was stationed at Hunter AFB in Savannah, Ga., until his discharge in January 1955. His military awards include the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, the Korean War Service Medal and the Air Force Good Conduct Medal.

Upon discharge, he attended the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, and graduated cum laude in 1958. His first job after college was at Cardigan Mountain School, a pre-prep private school in Canaan, N.H. (he subsequently worked 11 summers at CMS). He entered the University of Southern Mississippi and received his master’s degree in 1959 and doctorate of education in 1963. He was named in the Distinguished Educators of America publication in 1963.

He is survived by his wife, Sue, of 55 years; sons, Michael of Sugar Land, Texas, Mitchell of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; daughter Michelle of Houston, Texas; grandchildren Elizabeth, Nicholas, Marisa and Matthew; brothers John Day and Joseph Daly of Arlington, and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will also be held in the chapel of Cardigan Mountain School, Canaan, N.H., on Sunday June 10 at 2 p.m.

Alice B. Warnock

ARLINGTON — Alice B. (Emerson) Warnock, died Monday, March 19, 2007. She was the wife of the late Samuel A. “Sam the Milkman” Warnock Sr.

She was born in Brunswick, Maine, and had been a longtime Arlington resident.

She is survived by a daughter, Beverly A. Feeney and her husband Tom of Arlington and York, Maine; a daughter-in-law, Arlene Warnock of Revere; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Albert Butler.

She was also the mother of the late Samuel A. Warnock Jr.

A funeral service was heldFriday, March 23 at the Saville & Grannan Funeral Home, 418 Mass. Ave., Arlington. Burial was in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Arlington.
