Dr. Eda Polcari Angelo
CAMBRIDGE — Dr. Eda Polcari Angelo, 99, a Cambridge physician for more than five decades, died March 1, 2006, in her Cambridge home.
She was born June 10, 1906 in the North End of Boston of parents who immigrated to the United States from Italy. Her parents’ roots were in Avelino, in the mountains north of Naples. As a child, she lived in the North End and later, in Arlington, where her father ran a grocery store.
She graduated from Girls Latin School and in 1930 from Tufts College Medical School.
There were 10 women in the her class and they stuck together as a tight group —called themselves hen-medics — and after graduation in 1930, three of them opened a practice together. She got more training in anesthesia, did general practice with a specialty in obstetrics and gynecology. She told many stories of home deliveries when she would borrow sterile instruments from the hospital, and sit with the woman in labor at her home for as long as it took until delivery.
She opened gynecology clinics and was on the staff of the New England Hospital for Women and Children, which was a hospital run by and for women. Later, she was a staff member at Mount Auburn Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital.
As a girl in the North End, her route to school took her past Marconi’s Pharmacy on the corner of Sheef and Salem streets. It was owned by Nicholas Angelo. Gaspar would sometimes help at the soda fountain. She encountered him again at Tufts Medical School and they married in 1933, a blend of the best of Naples and Sicily.
After her husband died in 1971, Dr. Angelo moved back to Cambridge where she had a condominium overlooking the Charles River that she shared with her eldest daughter, Dr. Eda Joanne Angelo, a psychiatrist in Boston.
A devoted Catholic, she attended daily mass at St. Paul’s Church for many years. Her home photo gallery included photos of her with Pope John Paul II, Bernard Cardinal Law, Humberto Cardinal Medeiros and Bishop Thomas V. Daily.
