Richard G. McKown, 57

PROVINCETOWN - Richard G. McKown, 57, of Provincetown and Acton, died in Boston on Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2004 after a short illness. He was the husband of Deborah (Berry) McKown.

Born in Cambridge on Nov. 30, 1947, he lived in Arlington until attending the University of New Hampshire where he received a degree in photography. After his graduation, he attended the University of Iowa where he was a teaching fellow in film and received the equivalent of a doctorate in photography.

In 1972, he returned to New England where he was the head of media and taught drawing at Emerson College in Boston. Wanting to pursue a career as a studio artist, he began teaching at Middlesex Community College in Bedford, Rivier College in Nashua N.H., the University of Massachusetts in Lowell and the DeCordova Museum in Lincoln.

After winning a Massachusetts Arts Council prize for his work, he taught special short-term programs in public schools throughout Eastern Massachusetts, combining art, architecture, history and science. For many years, he taught in the Acton-Boxboro, Concord-Carlisle and Lincoln-Sudbury Community Educational programs.

He enjoyed hiking, biking, camping and fishing. He was a member of the Appalachian Mountain Club, numerous art museums across the country, art organizations, public and community TV and radio stations such as WGBH, WBUR, WWOZ in New Orleans, and was on the Community Advisory Board for WOMR - Cape Cod's community radio station and since its beginning 35 years ago, a supporter of the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown.

Besides his wife of 40 years, he is survived by his in-laws in Provincetown, Lina Berry and Dana Berry and his wife Debra DeJonker-Berry, many cousins including the Rev. Daniel Barker of Agawam and Mary Jane Franchot of Norton, godchildren Michael Midwood of Abington, Alex Slack of Davenport, Iowa, and Kika Olvera of Bradenton Fla., and many close friends, including Charlie and Fezzik.

A fund has been established in his honor to assist young people interested in art and the environment. Donations may be sent to the Rich McKown Memorial Fund, c/o Cambridge Savings Bank, 145 Great Rd., Acton, MA, 01720.

Celebrations of his life are being planned, including an exhibit at the Nan Mulford Gallery in Rockland Maine

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of F.J. Higgins Funeral Home, Roslindale.

Mary H. Lowe, 83
Thursday, January 6, 2005

ARLINGTON - Mary H. Lowe, 83, of Arlington, formerly of Newburyport, died at Wingate in Reading on Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004 following a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Bernard N. Lowe.

Born and raised in Owensboro, Ky., she was the daughter of the late William and Mary Louise (Hoskins) Ruby. She was employed by John Hancock Insurance of Boston for more than 20 years, retiring in 1989.

Mrs. Lowe is survived by her daughter, Jean H. Troisi and her husband Thomas of Stoneham; two sons, Bernard and Charles Lowe and his wife Gail, all of Memphis, Tenn.; a sister, Harriet Quinn of Kentucky; a brother, William Ruby of Indiana; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was also the mother of the late Cheryl Stickney, formerly of Arizona.

Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 3 at the Anderson-Bryant Funeral Home Stoneham.

Clifford R. Larson, 66
Thursday, January 6, 2005

PLAISTOW, N.H. - Clifford R. Larson, 66, died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005. He was the husband of Linda T. (Hutchins) Larson.

He was born in Newton on June 22, 1938, the son of the late John R. and Bertha S. (Johnson) Larson, who were both born in Sweden. Mr. Larson was a graduate of Northeastern University.

Mr. Larson was in the insurance business for 43 years and the owner of Clifford R. Larson Insurance in Arlington.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, C. Douglas Larson of Arlington; two daughters, Dawn Larson of Woburn and Beth Taylor and her husband, Scott, of North Canton, Conn.; four grandchildren; a sister, Marilyn DiNapoli of Arlington; and a cousin, Ina Egnet of Arlington.

A service was held Jan. 5 at the Calvary Bible Church in Derry, N.H.

Arrangements were under the care of the Douglass Funeral Home, Lexington.

Katherine H. (Kierce) Lanigan, 93
Thursday, January 6, 2005

ARLINGTON - Katherine H. (Kierce) Lanigan, 93, died Friday, Dec. 31, 2004, at Newton Wellesley Hospital. She was the wife of the late Cyril J. Lanigan.

She was born in Watertown and had been a longtime Arlington resident.

Mrs. Lanigan was employed as a clerk at the retail store Tourine's, in Arlington.

She was a member of the Arlington Catholic Women's Club and the Women's Sodality.

She is survived by a son, Paul Lanigan of Medford; five daughters, Shirley McHugh of Watertown, Carol Tassinari of Wakefield, Mary Ellen Ross of Franklin, Jane Nolan of Billerica and Elizabeth Lanigan of Arlington; 20 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was held Jan. 5, at St. Agnes Church in Arlington. Interment was in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Arlington.

For those who wish, contributions in Mrs. Lanigan's memory may be made to the Elizabeth Seton Residence, 125 Oakland St., Wellesley, MA.

Anthony J. Guarino, 68
Thursday, January 6, 2005

BILLERICA - Anthony J. Guarino, 68, formerly of Arlington and Winchester, died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2004, at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington. He was the husband of Marion (Walsh) Guarino.

He was born and raised in Winchester, the son of Edith Guarino of Arlington and the late Frank Guarino.

Mr. Guarino was a member of Local No. 22.

In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by a son, Robert Guarino of Arlington; five daughters, Karen Stotik of Arlington, Marguerite Watts in South Carolina, Janet Guarino of Chelmsford, Dianne Guarino of Billerica and Christine Roderick of Billerica; 15 grandchildren; and three sisters, Phyllis Lewis of East Boston, Frances DiCecca of Medford and Carol Burke of Tewksbury.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. today, Jan. 6, at St. Eulalia's Church in Winchester. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Winchester.

Arrangements were under the care of the Keefe Funeral Home, Arlington.

Eloise (Belliveau) Flaherty
Thursday, January 6, 2005

CONCORD - Eloise (Belliveau) Flaherty, died on Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004, at the age of 95, at Belmont Manor Nursing Center.

She was the wife of the late Peter Flaherty, who died in 1990. She was the mother of Sheila Borges of Concord, Terence C. Flaherty of Marblehead, Myra F. Schrode of Watertown, Pamela Carr-Noe of Port Jefferson, N.Y., Jenny Flaherty of Worcester and Brenda Romanos of Somerville.

She was the sister of Marion C Belliveau of Cambridge. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Flaherty was born in 1909 in Waltham. She graduated from Cambridge High and Latin School in 1927 and married Peter Flaherty in June 1931.

She worked at Charlestown Savings Bank until her first child was born. She and Peter started their family in Charlestown, then moved to Newport, R.I., while Peter served as a Naval officer during World War II. Subsequently, they lived in Medford, Havertown, Pa., and Arlington, before finally moving to Concord in 1967 when Peter who was an attorney, retired.

Eloise and her husband were dedicated bird watchers and relished the natural beauty of Concord. She loved flowers and was known for her beautiful gardens everywhere she lived. Eloise collected bells and seashells and was also an avid reader.

A full-time homemaker until her children were grown, she then worked part-time in the registrar's office of Harvard University.

A memorial Mass was held on Dec. 29 in St. Joseph's Church, Lincoln. She was buried beside her husband in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Concord.

Arrangements were under the direction of MacRae-Tunnicliffe, Concord

Dorothy Anne (Davis) Farese, 77
Thursday, January 6, 2005

ARLINGTON - Dorothy Anne (Davis) Farese, 77, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004, at the Massachusetts General Hospital. She was the wife of Ernest Farese.

She was born in Bangor, Maine. Mrs. Farese was a graduate of Cushing Academy, Lasell Junior College and Husson College.

Early in her career, Mrs. Farese was employed by the Naval Department in Washington, D.C. She later moved to Boston and became a senior secretary at the Volunteer Department of Massachusetts General Hospital where, after retiring from her secretarial responsibilities, she served as a volunteer for more than 30 years, assisting in many areas of the hospital and providing weekly organ concerts in the chapel.

Along with her other musical activities, she and an associate performed a formal piano duo concert for the entire Massachusetts General Hospital community.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a brother, Donald E. Davis; a first cousin, Donald H. Davis; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

A funeral was held Jan. 3 from the Keefe Funeral Home in Arlington, followed by a funeral service at the Pleasant Street Congregational Church. Interment was in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.

Pasquale D. Aloisio, 92
Thursday, January 6, 2005

ARLINGTON - Pasquale D. Aloisio, 92, of Arlington, died Monday, Dec. 27, 2004. He was the husband of Romilda D'Aloisio.

Born in Italy, he worked as a mechanic.

Besides his wife of 54 years, Mr. D'Aloisio is survived by two sons, Carmine and his wife Patricia and Massimo and his wife Suzanne. He was the brother of Emillano, Zacharia, Giovanni, Maria and Michelina. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass was celebrated on Friday Dec. 31 at St. Agnes Church in Arlington with burial in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Keefe Funeral Home, Arlington.

Joseph B. Colliton, 75
Thursday, January 6, 2005

SARASOTA, Fla. - Joseph B. Colliton, 75, formerly of Bedford, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2005, at the Emerson Hospital in Concord. He was the husband of Mary L. (Cox) Colliton.

He was born in Cambridge on Aug. 28, 1929, the son of the late Joseph and Catherine (Sullivan) Colliton. Mr. Colliton was a graduate of Arlington High School, Class of 1948.

Mr. Colliton served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict from 1951 to 1953.

During his high school years, he was employed at A.W. Hastings in Somerville, which became Colliton Building Material in 1983. Mr. Colliton was the company vice president and retired in 1994.

A Bedford resident for 34 years, he was a member of St. Michael's Church and for many years was a coach with the Bedford Youth Hockey Association. He had lived in Florida for the past 10 years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Paul Colliton and his wife, Donna, of Stoneham, and Kevin Colliton and his wife, Karen, of Chelmsford; a daughter, Joanne Saideh and her husband, Skip, of Concord; a brother, James Colliton and his wife, Ellen, of Bedford; and eight grandchildren.

He was also the brother of the late John Colliton.

A funeral will be held at 8 a.m., Friday, Jan. 7, from the Bedford Funeral Home, 167 The Great Road, Bedford, followed by a funeral Mass at 9 a.m. in St. Michael's Church, 90 Concord Road, Bedford. Visitation at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m., today, Jan. 6. Interment will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery, Concord.
