Ernest Dzendolet, Veteran, distinguished scholar
July 6, 2000

Ernest Dzendolet, Ph.D., 73, of Pelham, died Sunday, June 25, at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston following a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Betty (Manegold) Dzendolet.

Born in Cambridge Jan. 12, 1927, Dr. Dzendolet was the son of the late Ottan and Caroline (Boldgett) Dzendolet. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, having been honorably discharged in November of 1945. After briefly attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he went on to receive two bachelor's degrees from CalTech in Pasadena, Calif. He received his master's and Ph.D. degrees from Brown University.

After receiving his doctorate, he was employed at the Wright Patterson Air Force Base, where he worked closely with the second wave of astronauts on motor and sensory studies for their trips into space. He then joined the faculty at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Dr. Dzendolet was a professor of sensory psychology at UMass. at Amherst. He had been on the faculty since 1960, and taught thousands of students. His most recent work, published in 1999, was on the "Theory of Behavioral Mechanics." He taught and published in the area of gustation, audition and balance.

He is survived by a daughter, Karen Dzendolet and her husband, Bill Collins, of Beverly. He was predeceased by a brother, Lt. Arthur Dzendolet, USN, who died in the Coconut Grove fire of 1942.

A memorial service was held Thursday, June 29, in the First Congregational Church of Amherst. Expressions of sympathy may be made in his memory (or his horse, "Professor") to the MSPCA, Nevins Farms & Equine Center, Box 455, Methuen 01844. Arrangements were under the direction of the Grondin Funeral Home of Beverly.

Gloria J. Elario, Celebrated 50th anniversary
July 6, 2000

Gloria J. (Sciamanna) Elario, 69, of Wenham, died Sunday, July 2, at her residence following a long illness. She was the wife of Donald E. Elario, with whom she celebrated 50 years of marriage by renewing their vows in November of 1999.

Born in Beverly, daughter of the late Angelo and Ids (DuFour) Sciamanna, she was raised in Beverly. She graduated from Beverly High School with the Class of 1949. She was a nurse's aide for over 12 years before retiring in 1988.

Surviving her, in addition to her husband, are four daughters and three sons-in-law, Kathleen and Steven Laue of Hubbard, Ore., Patricia Elario of Amesbury, Sharon and Stephen Perkins of Merrimac, Laurie and John VanLoon of Salem; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Donald Elario Jr. of Reno, Nev., and Robert and Dianne Elario of Beverly; one sister, June Lang of Beverly; one brother, Norman Sciamanna of Beverly; nine grandchildren, Shawna and Brandon Elario, Jessica Smith, Samantha Laue, Corey, Derek, and Daniel Elario, Andrew Perkins, Christopher Perkins; one great-grandson, Christopher Smith; and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral was held from the Campbell Funeral Home of Beverly on Wednesday, July 5, followed by a funeral Mass at the Church of St. Paul, Hamilton. Burial was in the North Beverly Cemetery.

Grace B. Loughlin, Library advocate, pianist
July 6, 2000

Grace (Birmingham) Loughlin, 75, of Beverly died Wednesday, June 28, in Beverly Hospital following complications from Alzheimer's disease. She was the wife of Edmund Loughlin.

Mrs. Loughlin was a native of Beverly. The daughter of the late John and Grace (Murphy) Birmingham, she attended St. Mary School and Beverly High School. She received her degree in elementary education from Boston University in 1949 and taught school in Newton for the next two years.

After relocating to Stamford, Conn., she became involved in the Stamford Catholic Library, eventually becoming president of that organization. She also taught Bible education classes in Sacred Heart Parish in Stamford. Mrs. Loughlin was an avid swimmer and was interested in music, being an accomplished pianist.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Loughlin is survived by: a son, James Loughlin of Seymour, Conn.; three daughters, Jeanne Mazzola of Torrington, Conn., Beth Bradley of Canton, Conn., and Ellen Pincus of Shoreline, Wash.; a sister, Mary Jean Metzger of Princeton, N.H.; nine grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late John Birmingham Jr.

Her funeral was held from the Campbell Funeral Home of Beverly Monday, July 3, followed by a funeral Mass at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, Beverly. Burial was in Central Cemetery, Beverly. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Alzheimer's Association, 36 Cameron Ave., Cambridge, MA 02140 or to the VNA of Greater Salem, 27 Congress St., Salem, MA 01970.

H. Allan Forsstrom II, Active in community affairs
July 6, 2000

H. Allan Forsstrom II died at home in Peabody Saturday, July 1, after a long illness. He was the beloved husband of Janice (Rokowski) Forsstrom.

Born in Beverly in 1948, he was the son of Lillian (Overberg) Forsstrom and the late Hank Forsstrom. He graduated from Beverly High School in 1966 and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1970. After graduating from the Western New England School of Law, he was admitted to the Massachusetts Bar Association in 1977.

Since 1977, he practiced law in Beverly as a principal in the Heaphy and Forsstrom law firm. Most recently, his office relocated to the newly renovated Cummings Center.

Mr. Forsstrom was active in community organizations such as Beverly Hospital, the Chamber of Commerce and Bass Haven Yacht Club. He was a longtime member of the Beverly Rotary Club, and served for many years as a trustee and executive board member of the Beverly School for the Deaf. He was also a member of the local Thule Lodge No. 96, and a past officer of the Massachusetts District Lodge, Vasa Order of America. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golf, sailing and traveled broadly.

In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by: a son, Hal Forsstrom; two sisters, Diane L. Forsstrom of Beverly and Nancy F. Gillespie of Helena, Mont., and an extensive family of in-laws, Dr. Wilfrid Rokowski, Noreen and Henry St. Hilaire, John Gillespie, Dr. Robert and Susan Rokowski, Thomas and Suzanne Rokowski; a niece, Erica Wallace, and five nephews, Matthew and Nicholas St. Hilaire, Alexander, Peter and Jared Rokowski; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Helen A. Costello, Veteran, city worker
July 6, 2000

Helen "Gypsy" (Arena) Costello, 76, of Beverly died Friday, June 30, at Salem Hospital following a brief illness. She was the wife of the late James A. Costello.

Born in Beverly, she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Santa (Biancuzzo) Arena. Mrs. Costello was the payroll clerk for the city of Beverly Public Works Department for 25 years and was retired. She served in the U.S. Women's Army Corps during World War II. She was in the European command. She was very active as the chaplain and first woman officer of the Vittori-Rocci Post 56 in Beverly.

She was a volunteer at the North Shore Music Theatre for almost a decade. She was a member of the Gold Star Wives of America, Women's Army Corps, Chapter 14, the Disabled American Veterans of America, the AARP, and the Council on Aging. Mrs. Costello was a well-known, loving nanny to many children through the years.

Mrs. Costello is survived by: two sisters, Mary Hazzard and Jennie DeSantis, both of Beverly; a devoted companion, Emile Dulong of Beverly; and five nephews, including Donald Aucone and his wife, Priscilla, and their daughter, Nicole, all of Beverly. She was also the sister of the late Josephine Aucone.

Her funeral will be held from the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot St., Beverly, Thursday, July 6, at 10:15 a.m., followed by a funeral Mass at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, Beverly, at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Central Cemetery, Beverly.

Joyce A. Legault, Medical receptionist
July 6, 2000

Joyce A. (Fielding) Legault, 62, wife of the late Albert Legault, died Saturday, June 24, in Newport Richey, Florida, following a long illness.

Born in Troy, Michigan, daughter of the late Raymond and Elsie (Passingham) Fielding, she was raised and educated in Troy. She was a graduate of Troy High School in the class of 1955. Mrs. Legault moved to Hamilton in 1966 and was a resident for 26 years. She moved to Salem in 1992 and went to Newport Richey, Florida, in the winter.

Mrs. Legault was employed with The Medical Group in Beverly, and also Willowdale Medical Center in Hamilton, where she worked in medical reception. She was an avid golfer and enjoyed ceramics, needlepoint, and planting and tending to her flower gardens.

Surviving her are: one son and daughter-in-law, David and Kelly Legault of Oakland, Maine; three daughters and one son-in-law; Julie and Daniel Dandreo of Swampscott; Tiffany LeGault of Swampscott; Donna Beaulieu of Danvers; one brother and sister-in-law, James and Nola Fielding of Newport Richey, Florida; seven grandchildren, Daniel, Gina, Garrett and Angela Dandreo, all of Swampscott, Casey Rogers of Portland, Maine, Matthew and Nicholas Legault of Oakland, Maine, and her companion, Eugene Hartling of Newport Richey, Florida.

The funeral was held at the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot St., Beverly. The burial was at Hamilton Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 66-Y Concord St., Wilmington, 01887.

Karl R. Franklin, Outdoorsman, craftsman
July 6, 2000

Karl R. Franklin, 43, of Beverly died Thursday, June 29, at his residence following a brief illness. Born in Salem, he was the son of Richard and Myrna (Doyle) Franklin.

He was raised in Hamilton and was a graduate of Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School with the Class of 1975. He was employed with TruForm Industries of Rowley for over 23 years. He was a production manager for the company. Mr. Franklin was an avid skier, fisherman, and enjoyed snowmobiling. Mr. Franklin was a hard worker and excellent craftsman.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Franklin is survived by a son, Matthew Franklin of Stow, Ohio; a daughter, Lisa Franklin of Beverly; a brother, Richard Franklin of Hamilton; his companion, Margaret Hahnen of Topsfield; several aunts, uncles, cousins and many close friends.

His memorial Mass will be held Thursday, July 6, at the Church of St. Paul, Hamilton, at 9 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours at the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot St., Beverly, will be Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial donations may be made in his name to the American Cancer Society, 66-Y Concord St., Wilmington, MA 01887-2100.

Louis A. Balboni, Great-grandfather of five
July 6, 2000

Louis A. Balboni, 95, of Ipswich, died Wednesday, June 28, at Beverly Hospital after a short illness. He was the husband of the late C. Frances (O'Keefe) Balboni.

Mr. Balboni was born in Boston in 1905, son of the late Gaetano and Annice (Buldini) Balboni. He was raised in Orient Heights, East Boston. He resided in Ipswich for 52 years and retired from the Boston Navy Shipyard in 1968. Along with his love for animals, he enjoyed his greenhouse and gardening.

Mr. Balboni is survived by: two sons and daughters-in-law, Louis and Patricia Balboni of Ipswich and Thomas and Sydney Balboni of Beverly; a daughter and son-in-law, Rita and Dan Player of Ipswich; and nine grandchildren, Cheryl Meek and William Balboni, both of Florida, Louis Balboni III of Tewksbury, Thomas and Christopher Balboni, both of Beverly, Katie Player of London, England, Amy Player-Smith and her husband, Kevin Smith, of New Jersey, Sarah and Elizabeth Player, both of Ipswich; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Emma Bianco of Laconia, New Hampshire, and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Balboni was also predeceased by five brothers, Henry, Gino, Evo, Albert and Alfred Balboni.

Services were held Saturday, July 1, from the Morris Funeral Home of Ipswich, followed by a funeral Mass in Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, Ipswich. Burial was in the Cowles Memorial Cemetery, Ipswich. Memorial contributions in Mr. Balboni's name may be made to the Jimmy Fund, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, 44 Binney St., Boston, MA 02115.

Mary D. Giardinella, Dedicated to her family
July 6, 2000

Mary (DelPriore) Giardinella, 78, of Beverly died Wednesday, June 28, at Beverly Hospital. Born in Boston, she was the daughter of the late Angelo and Pasqualina (Fabiano) DelPriore.

Raised and educated in Boston, she had been a resident of Beverly for the past 40 years. Mrs. Giardinella was very dedicated to her family and was very proud of all of their accomplishments. Her major concerns in life were the well-being of her family and friends. She received great joy nurturing them all. She was a great cook, which was enjoyed by all.

Surviving her are two sons, Raymond Giardinella and his wife, Penny, of Madisonville, Kentucky, Thomas Giardinella and his fiance, Paula Ricard, of Townsend; one daughter, Lena Gagnon and her husband, Frank, of Beverly; three brothers, John and Angelo DelPriore, both of Boston, and Anthony DelPriore of New York; two sisters, Nancy Stern of Medford and Victoria Pagliuca of Revere; six grandchildren, Onda Payne and Gaylon Giardinella, both of Kentucky, Kaitlin Giardinella of Georgia, Joan Marie Wallace of South Weymouth, Rosemarie Gagnon and Annmarie Peters, both of Beverly; four great-grandchildren, Landon Baize and Danielle Payne, both of Kentucky, Meredith and David Wallace of South Weymouth; and many nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late Michael DelPriore and the late Theresa Paneese.

Her funeral was held Saturday, July 1, from the Campbell Funeral Home of Beverly, followed by a funeral Mass at St. John the Evangelist Church, Beverly. Memorial donations may be made in her name to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, 01701-4688 or to the American Diabetes Association, 1 Bromfield St., Suite 5, Boston, 02108-5117.

Shirley C. Theriault, Took great pride in family
July 6, 2000

Shirley (Carney) Theriault, 76, of Beverly died Sunday, July 2, at Sunbridge of Beverly.

Born in Peabody, daughter of the late John and Eugena (Owen) Carney, she was a graduate of Peabody High School. She was a former resident of Lynn and Lynnfield, and had lived in Beverly for the past eight years.

Mrs. Theriault was an avid sports enthusiast and enjoyed golf. She was very proud of her family and all of their accomplishments.

She is survived by: a son, David C. Theriault of Topsfield; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Donna Chasnoff of Brookeville, Maryland, Patricia and Paul Montecalvo of Ipswich and Michele and Stephen Pierro of Hamilton; eight grandchildren, Adam and Justin Theriault of Topsfield, Ryan, Jason and Megan Montecalvo, all of Ipswich, Lee and Devon Pierro of Hamilton and Jordan Chasnoff of Brookeville, Maryland; and several nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late William and John Carney and Eileen Suldensky.

The funeral was held from the Campbell Funeral Home of Beverly, followed by a funeral Mass at the Church of St. Paul in Hamilton. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Disease, 36 Cameron Ave., Cambridge, MA 02140.

Victoria C. Parker, Accomplished pianist
July 6, 2000

Victoria Claire (Freniere) Parker, 99, of Beverly died Wednesday, June 28, at Blueberry Hill Health Care in Beverly. She was the wife of the late C. Linwood Parker.

Born in Cambridge Feb. 2, 1901, she was the daughter of the late Louis N. and Marie L. (Monier) Parker. She was an accomplished pianist who played professionally before she married. She was a resident of Peabody for many years and worked at Holyoke Mutual of Salem after her children were grown, retiring in 1977, then moved to Beverly. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Sodality and the Roger Conant Senior Citizens of Beverly. She enjoyed playing the piano, gardening, and baking for her family and friends.

Mrs. Parker is survived by: a daughter, Jeanne P. Cahill of Beverly; a son, Robert Parker and his wife, Anne, of Falmouth; nine grandchildren, Edward Cahill and his wife, Elizabeth, William Cahill and his wife, Laurie, and Michael Parker Cahill, and Timothy Cahill and his wife, Kathryn, all of Beverly, Robert Cahill of Dorchester, Sean Cahill of New York, Victoria Parker and her husband, Gregory Estey of Lexington, Elizabeth Parker and her husband, Gerry Smiezny of Evanston, Illinois, and Luke Parker and his wife, Annette, of Attleboro; eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the infant daughter Jacqueline Marie Parker and sister and sister-in-law of the late Francis Freniere, Louis Freniere and his wife, Eva, and Arthur Freniere and his wife, Mary.

The funeral was held from the Campbell Funeral Home, Beverly, Saturday, July 1, followed by a funeral Mass at St. John the Evangelist Church, Beverly. Memorial donations may be made in Mrs. Parker's name to St. John the Evangelist Church, 525 Cabot St., Beverly, MA 01915 or to the charity of one's choice.
