Louise Re, Mother of Brookline resident

Wednesday, October 9, 2002

Louise C. (Cain) Re of Roslindale died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at her home. She was 82.

Born in Boston, Mrs. Re was raised in the St. Peter's Parish section of Dorchester. She was a longtime Roslindale resident.

During World War II, Mrs. Re met and married her husband. She considered her role as wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother as her life's vocation.

She leaves her husband of more than 50 years, Francis Re; five sons, John Re of Sarasota, Fla., Frank Re of Brookline, Richard Re of Cambridge, and Robert Re and William Re, both of Roslindale; a daughter, Deborah Reinhart of Jamaica Plain; a sister, Genevieve Bunker of Dorchester; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Friday, Oct. 4, at Sacred Heart Church, Roslindale.

Burial was in Forest Hills Cemetery.

Arrangements were made by P.E. Murray-George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home, West Roxbury.

Charles Sterling, Former Brookline firefighter

Wednesday, October 9, 2002

Lt. Charles A. Sterling of Chatham died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002. He was 81.

He was a Brookline firefighter for 34 years, a charter member of Local 950, and a member of the board of directors for the Brookline Municipal Credit Union.

He was a survivor of Pearl Harbor and a Navy veteran.

He was the husband for 58 years of Ruth (Julian) Sterling.

In addition to his wife, he leaves his daughters, Betty Jean Mulak of Yarmouthport and Cheryl Miller of Martha's Vineyard; his brothers, Robert Sterling, Edward Sterling and Tony Sterling; his sisters, Betty Krupa, Rosie Bybee and Honey Michael, all of Kansas City, Mo.; his grandchildren, Gene Mulak, Kimberly Mueller, Eric Mulak and William Mueller III; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 12, at 1:30 p.m., at Holy Redeemer Church, Chatham. Friends and family are welcome to attend.

Arrangements were by the Cremation Society of Massachusetts.

Bernard Noymer, Owned Leather World chain

Bernard Noymer of Newton Highlands died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004, at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston. He was 77.

Born in Karlsruhe, Germany, Mr. Noymer came to this country as a young boy. He graduated from Brookline High School and, in 1951, from UMass.

He founded and owned Leather World, a chain of luggage and leather specialty stores in Newton Centre, Newton Highlands, Cambridge, Lexington, Brookline and Swampscott.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in Japan.

Mr. Noymer served on the UMass School of Management Advisory Council. He was a longtime member of the board of directors of The Newton YMCA, the National Leather Luggage Dealers Association, and a trustee for life of Temple Sinai, Brookline, and the Newton Rotary.

He leaves his wife, Sandra (Poley) Noymer; his children, Ruth Budelmann and her husband, Edward, James Noymer and his wife, Janet, Karen Sprenger and her husband, Douglas, and Michael Noymer and his wife, Carol; brothers, Fritz Noymer and Arthur Noymer; sister-in-law, Judith Walker; and grandchildren, Jason Budelmann, Jennifer Noymer, Gregory Noymer, Leah Budelmann, Nicole Sprenger, Alexandra Noymer and Sydney Noymer.

Services were held Friday, Aug. 13, at Temple Sinai in Brookline.

Burial was at Sharon Memorial Park.

Remembrances may be made to The Jerome Lipper Multiple Myeloma Clinic, Dana Farber Cancer institute, 44 Binney St., Boston, MA 02115.

Arrangements were made by Brezniak-Rodman Levine-Briss Funeral Directors, Newton.

Roger 'Mike' Foley, Retired Brookline policeman

Roger M. "Mike" Foley of Brookline and Humarock died Friday, Aug. 13, 2004.

Mr. Foley was retired from the Brookline Police Department, where he was a patrolman.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was a member of Stephen F. Rutledge Post #864 VFW.

He leaves his wife of 49 years, Jean E. (Cunniff) Foley; a daughter, Patricia J. Foley of West Roxbury; a son, Michael G. Foley of Brookline; and a brother, Joseph P. Foley and his wife, Eileen, of Brookline. He was "Papa" to Michael Seamus and Mariah Jane Foley, and their mother Ethel, all of Marshfield.

A funeral was held Tuesday, Aug. 17, from the Bell-O'Dea Funeral Home, Brookline, followed by a funeral Mass in St. Mary of the Assumption Church.

Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Friends of the Sisters of St. Joseph Development Office, 637 Cambridge St., Brighton, MA 02135.

Israel Glasser, Formerly of Chestnut Hill
Thursday, August 19, 2004

Israel Glasser of Beverly, formerly of Chestnut Hill, died Friday, July 30, 2004, in a local nursing home. He was 94.

Born in Malden, he was raised in Dorchester. He graduated from Dorchester Boys High School and attended the University of Iowa and Boston University School of Business.

In 1922, he had been a bat boy for the visiting team at Fenway Park and became a lifelong Red Sox fan.

Mr. Glasser was a decorated U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He attained the rank of sergeant and served in the Pacific Theatre. He also worked for the government during the Korean War. He moved to Chestnut Hill in 1955.

Mr. Glasser was a director of the International Dry Goods Co. of Boston.

He was a longtime member of Temple Emeth of Brookline, and was a member of many philanthropic organizations including B'nai Brith, MGH Bulfinch Medical Group World, Jewish Congress, NAACP and the Democratic National Committee.

Husband of the late Charlotte (Paul) Glasser, he leaves his son, Michael Glasser and his wife, Sharon; and two grandchildren, Jonathan Glasser and Charlotte Glasser.

He was the brother of the late Albert A. Glasser, Eli A. Glasser, Benjamin F. Glasser, Edward E. Glasser and Frances B. Hirsh.

Services were held Tuesday, Aug. 3, at the Levine Chapel, Brookline.

Burial was in Beth El Cemetery, West Roxbury.

Leonard Kogos, Entrepreneur, loved and owned horses

Leonard L. Kogos of Sudbury, formerly of Brookline, died Monday, Aug. 2, 2004.

Mr. Kogos grew up in Brighton, the son of the late Morris Kogos and Mollie Silverman. He loved music, and had played saxophone as a teenager in the Lenny Kington Trio.

Mr. Kogos had a 25-year career in the automotive parts business starting out with his aunt at Boston Speedometer in Brighton. He went on to own Al-Len Automotive in West Roxbury, Westwood and Martha's Vineyard. Later, he and his former wife embarked on a new venture in the quick printing industry, and opening a PIP printing franchise, which he operated for 20 years, 15 of which were with his daughter, Faye. During this time, he also returned to school, attending Northeastern to get his law degree.

A supportive father and grandfather, Mr. Kogos always found time to go to baseball games, play tennis and ride horses. A horse lover, he became a lifelong member of the Green Mountain Horse Associate in Vermont. He owned three horses, Governor Magic Cream, Warchief's Blue Beauty and Beau.

Mr. Kogos was a past master in both the Freedom and Adelphi Masonic lodges, and was recently recognized for 50 years of service. Some of his other accomplishments included breaking the gas monopoly on Martha's Vineyard, writing a crisis management handbook for schools after Sept. 11 and volunteering in the Boston Marathon.

He leaves his children, Alan Kogos of North Eastham, Faye Kogos of Brookline, Rhonda Skloff and her husband, Robert, of Sudbury and Scott Kogos of South Boston; his sisters, Lorraine Gladstone of Boca Raton, Fla., and Cheryl Condon of Dedham; his brother, Ronald R. Kogos of Boston; his grandchildren, Justin Skloff and Brett Skloff; his former wife, Joan (Riseman) Kogos of Brookline; and a dear friend, Debra Benanti of Acton.

Services were held Wednesday, Aug. 4, at Levine Chapel, Brookline.

Burial was in Beit Olam Cemetery, Wayland.

Florence Levine, Longtime Brookline resident
Thursday, August 19, 2004

Florence Levine of Brookline died Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, at Beth Israel-Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. She was 81.

Mrs. Levine was born in Boston and had been a longtime resident of Brookline.

Wife of the late Aaron Levine, she leaves her children, Dr. Mark Levine of Denver, Dr. Steven Levine and his wife, Debbie, of Newton, and Dr. Judy Luskin and her husband, Michael, of Scarsdale, N.Y.; and three grandchildren, Sarah and Rachel Luskin, and Jacob Levine.

Services were held Sunday, Aug. 15, at Sharon Memorial Park.

Remembrances may be made to Combined Jewish Philanthropies, 126 High St., Boston, MA 02110; or to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, 44 Binney St., Boston, MA 02115.

Nora 'Nonie' O'Leary, Retired BHS administrative assistant
Thursday, August 19, 2004

Nora F. "Nonie" O'Leary of Brookline died Monday, May 24, 2004.

She was a daughter of the late Timothy M. and Mary A. (Waters) O'Leary.

Ms. O'Leary was retired. She had been administrative assistant to the headmaster at Brookline High School.

She leaves her sisters, Elizabeth "Dolly" O'Leary and Julia McMahon, both of Brookline; 19 nieces and nephews; 50 grandnieces and grandnephews; and four great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews.

She was sister of the late Timothy O'Leary, Margaret Fleming, John and Dennis O'Leary, and Katherine "Kay" Boudreau.

A funeral was held Thursday, May 27, from the Bell-O'Dea Funeral Home, followed by a funeral Mass in St. Lawrence Church, Chestnut Hill.

Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Catherine Priestley, Bookkeeper
Thursday, August 19, 2004

Catherine A. (Coakley) Priestley of Melrose died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital. She was 93.

Born in Boston, she was raised in Brookline and graduated from St. Mary's Grammar School and St. Mary's High School in Brookline. She moved to Melrose in 1944.

She worked as a bookkeeper for Vickers Instrument Co. in Malden and Woburn for more than 10 years and for an accounting firm in Malden. She also worked as a bookkeeper for the Granada Theater, the Strand Theater and the Twin Theater Drive-in.

Mrs. Priestley was a longtime communicant of St. Mary Church in Melrose and was a member of St. Mary's Ladies Sodality.

She was an artist and enjoyed painting and crafts.

Wife of the late Bernard G. Priestley, she leaves three daughters, Jean P. Flanagan of Arlington, Anne K. Spencer of Melrose and Marie Dolloff of Bradford; three stepsons, Robert Priestly of Martha's Vineyard, Russell Priestley of Melrose and Warren Priestley of Virginia; and several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces; and nephews.

She was the stepmother of the late Gilbert Priestley and Olive M. Ryan, and the sister of the late Sister Mary Ethna SSJ, John Coakley, Helen McCarthy and Florence Shea.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Friday, Aug. 13, at St. Mary Church, Melrose.

Burial was in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Gil Priestley Scholarship Fund, c/o MHS Permanent Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 192, Melrose, MA 02176; or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Arrangements were made by Gately Funeral Home, Melrose.
