Lidia Fischer: Mother of Brookline resident

Lidia Fischer of Cherry Hill, N.J., died Monday, Aug. 19, 2002, in Albuquerque, N.M. She was 86.
Born in Lodz, Poland, Mrs. Fischer survived the Holocaust, losing most of her family at Auschwitz. She served in the Polish Army under British command in Egypt and the Middle East during World War II before immigrating to the United States with her husband in 1950.
After settling in New Jersey, Mrs. Fischer became involved in neighborhood activities. She organized the League to Aid Retarded Children and helped establish South Jersey's first nursery school for retarded children. To fund the school and other LARCS activities, she organized annual dinner-dances and theater nights.
Mrs. Fischer was a dancer and gymnast in her youth. She taught Polish folk dancing to students in extracurricular world culture programs. She loved playing bridge and socializing with people.
Wife of 38 years to the late Jan Bernard Fischer, she leaves her children, Dr. Vivian Giudice and her husband, Dr. Richard Giudice, of Albuquerque, and Andrew Fischer and his wife, Linda Jason, of Brookline; her grandchildren, Michael, Jeffrey and Lauren Giudice of Albuquerque, and Shira, Miriam and Ted Fischer of Boston.
Services were held at Goldstein Funeral Chapel, Philadelphia.
Burial was at Mount Lebanon Cemetery, Collingdale, Pa.
Memorial donations may be made to the Arthritis Foundation or to the American Cancer Society.
Robert Flannery: Retired Brookline firefighter

Robert E. Flannery died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002, in West Roxbury.
He was retired from the Brookline Fire Department.
Mr. Flannery was a veteran of the United States Navy.
He leaves his wife Ruth (Terry) Flannery; his son Michael Flannery of Quincy; and his grandchildren, Kerri, Kristine and Kathleen Kirby.
He was the father of the late Brian, Karen, Suzan and John Flannery.
A funeral was held Friday, Aug. 16, from William J. Gormley Funeral Home in West Roxbury, followed by a funeral Mass in St. Theresa Church.
Burial was in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
Louise Gillis: Former Brookline resident

Louise G. (Scully) Gillis of Freeport, Maine died Monday, Aug. 19, 2002.
Mrs. Gillis was formerly of Brookline.
Wife of the late Austin W. Gillis, she leaves her sons, Richard A. Gillis and his wife, Karen, of Arlington, Robert W. Gillis and his wife, Neth, of Nashua, N.H., and Ronald J. Gillis and his wife, Christine, of Freeport, Maine; a sister, Jean Conner of Cranston, R.I.; her grandchildren, Ronald and Mikaela Gillis; and several nieces and nephews.
She was the sister of the late Margaret Trombley.
A funeral Mass was celebrated Thursday, Aug. 22, in St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Brookline.
Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Massachusetts, 36 Cameron Ave., Cambridge, MA 02139.
Arrangements were made by Bell-O'Dea Funeral Home, Brookline.
Elsbeth Kilgallon: Singer, pianist

Elsbeth Kilgallon of Brookline died Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, at the Deutsches Altenheim Nursing Center in West Roxbury.
Born in Germany, she was the daughter of Friedrich and Mathilda Kuhles.
Ms. Kilgallon was educated at St. Marien Lyzeum and received her musical training at Thea Ludermann's Conservatory of Music.
Despite World War II, she continued to study the piano and sing. She was a salaried member of the Dortmund Opera Chorus.
After moving to America, she was an active member of an amateur Italian opera company directed and run by Madame Ipolito located in Boston's old Elizabeth Peabody Playhouse. She also sang in St. Mary's Church Choir and on occasion played the organ.
Ms. Kilgallon worked out of her home, typing, translating and tutoring. For a few years she worked in the main library in Brookline, then went on to work for many years in the Brookline Trust Co. as a processor of auto loans.
She leaves her children, Donald Kilgallon of Brookline and Leonore Nicolay of Brighton; her cousins, Helmut Gilles and his wife, Charlotte, and Christa Eckartz-Hassan and her husband, Said, all of Germany.
Services were held Wednesday, Aug. 21, from the Bell-O'Dea Funeral Home, Brookline.
Burial was in Walnut Hills Cemetery.

Seymour Mael: Battle of the Bulge veteran, active in Jewish organizations

Seymour Mael of Brookline died Saturday, July 20, 2002. He was 77.
He was born in Millis, the son of the late Harry and Nellie (Braverman) Mael.
Following his graduation from Millis High School in 1942, Mr. Mael joined the Army and served in the 100th infantry division. He participated in the Battle of the Bulge and the E.T.O.
Upon leaving the Army in 1946, he joined Mael Bros. Cattle where he worked until his retirement.
Mr. Mael was a founding member of Congregation Beth Pinchas in Brookline and served as its first president. In 1986, he was named the New England Chassidic Center "Man of the Year." He was active in a variety of Jewish organizations.
He leaves his wife, Dvora (Buchman) Mael; his children, Barry Mael and his wife, Diane, of Highland Park, N.J., Michael Mael and his wife, Kari, of Sharon, Rhonda and her husband, Steve Younger, of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Eliot Mael and his wife, Allison, of Newton; his siblings, Mildred Jacobs of Quincy, Leon Mael of Milford, Nysen Mael of Brookline, Ruth Cohen of Brookline, Sidney Mael of Newton and Joshua "Puffy" Mael of Millis; and 11 grandchildren.
He was the husband of the late Freda (Oppenheim) Mael.
Services were held Sunday, July 21, at Stanetsky Memorial Chapels, Brookline.
Burial was in Kehillath Jacob Cemetery, West Roxbury.

Stanley Mervis: Retired patent counsel

Stanley H. Mervis of Auburndale, formerly of Newton Highlands, died Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2002, at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. He was 75.
Born in Portsmouth, Va., he graduated from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va., with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry. He then received his law degree from there as well, at the Marshall Wythe School of Law.
Mr. Mervis worked for Prentice Hall in New York as legal editor. He then worked with the Patent Office in Washington, D.C., as a patent examiner. He later joined Polaroid as associate patent counsel and remained there for 39 years until his retirement in 1993. He wrote patents for Edward Land and was hired to do colored patents. He was involved in the litigation of Polaroid v. Kodak which involved three of his own patents, and all the patents were upheld by the court.
At the time of his death, Mr. Mervis was president of the New England Paperweight Collectors Association, and had been the first and past chairman of the Advisory Council of Lasell Village in Newton.
He was a member of Congregation Mishkan Tefila in Newton for more than four decades.
He leaves his wife, Zella (Loew) Mervis; his children, Carolyn Mervis and her husband, John Pani, of Louisville, Ky., Steven Mervis and his wife, Lisa, of Merion, Pa., and Cindy Mervis of Atlanta; and his grandsons, Ari and Ethan Pani and Joshua, Benjamin and Samuel Mervis.
He was the brother of the late Albert and Buddy Mervis.
Services were held Thursday, Aug. 22, at Congregation Mishkan Tefila, Newton.
Burial was in Mishkan Tefila Memorial Park, West Roxbury.

Wife of the late Patrick "Dapper" Murphy, she leaves her children, Dr. Francis N. Murphy of South Carolina, Judith Daudelin of Hopedale, Richard L. Murphy of Merrimack, N.H., Gerald J. Murphy and Sheila Moore, both of Brookline, Denise Murphy of Newton, John J. Murphy of Merrimack and Mary L. Michael of Manchester, N.H.; her sister-in-law, Eleanor "Ella" Murphy of Brookline; 26 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren
A funeral was held Saturday, Aug. 24, from the Bell-O'Dea Funeral Home, Brookline, followed by a funeral Mass in St. Mary of the Assumption Church.
Burial was in Walnut Hills Cemetery.
