MANCLE
John Mancle, 59, long-time resident of Northampton, beloved son, brother, cousin, father, friend, precious love and much more, died on 1/1/04 in New Jersey, where he had spent his youth. He shared his enormous talents, love of life and remarkable intelligence with all who knew him. John was a gifted and inspired classical musician. He made and played several instruments and especially enjoyed playing piano and guitar for and with friends. John was a recognized and accomplished visual artist. His work has been displayed in museums throughout New Jersey and Philadelphia and in the homes of friends and family. He was a mathematician, poet, botanist, nature lover, gardener, astronomer, martial arts master, dancer, cook, healer, and graphic artist. John was an enlightened teacher and humble prophet, with the mind of an engineer and the soul of a poet. His intuitive understanding of the mechanics of movement, from his ability to play two ball (hitting two balls simultaneously against the wall with two tennis rackets) for hours with ease to his graceful dance at Dance Spree, in Northampton, led many to believe he was a Zen master. His love of nature was well-known, from his awareness of the scent of every flower on every breeze to his joyful appreciation of the beauty in a piece of found wood that inspired his turning it into a piece of jewelry for a friend. He met nature on its terms, celebrating, learning from it and protecting it in all ways. This gentle soul attracted even the sparrows in the park to feed from his giving and beautiful hands. He could take all the pretense and judgment one could muster and melt it into laughter. His sense of humor was well-known to all who knew him. John could be seen walking or bicycling through town enjoying the sights and sounds of the street life he contributed to and cherished or walking over soft snow beneath his well-traveled feet on his way to visit a friend or help someone in need. He could be seen in the Forbes Library, surrounded by magazines and textbooks of all sorts taking in knowledge from many sources and viewpoints, inspired by his love of learning and endless curiosity. John shared his vast knowledge of diverse topics with others. John could be seen sitting in Pulaski Park soaking up the sun or sharing laughter or a good story with a young or old or homeless person. John spent the last years of his life caring for his mother with his brother and helping neighbors by shoveling snow, taking care of their homes, plants and pets. He loved and understood animals and provided many, especially cats he loved so much, with a loving home. John had hoped to return to Northampton to the many friends he had here. John, in life and now in death, exemplified the value of living in the present, which he did so expertly, through his appreciation of nature, people, animals, and beauty that he saw in all things. John was one who forgave easily; remembering, cherishing, and supporting all that was good in people. He made everyone he met feel cherished and appreciated. John will be remembered forever by neighbors, friends, and family for his loving, kind, and gentle way, his gift to all. He walked gracefully through life. He will be sorely missed. Friends of John's will gather soon to share photos, stories, and memories of John, in memory and celebration of his life. For further information about this event please contact Amy Bookbinder at 584-7322 or Neshomeh2@aol.com. Memorial gifts to the family may be sent to his mom, Mrs. Mildred Mancle, c/o Margie Phillips, 131 Laplante Circle, Easthampton, MA 01027.
