Elsie M. Nielsen
NORTHAMPTON -- Elsie M. (Altenbach) Nielsen, 100, of Summer Street, died July 1, 1997 in the Linda Manor Extended Care Facility in Leeds.
She was the daughter of the late William and Helena (Lutz) Altenbach.

She was a member of the Edwards Church in Northampton. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Her husband, Christian H. Nielsen, died in 1969.

She leaves a daughter, Muriel K. Gilbert of Northampton; two granddaughters; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mary (Pais) Sedlak
EASTHAMPTON -- Mary (Pais) Sedlak, 86, formerly of Easthampton, died July 3, 1997 in the Mediplex Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center of Northampton.
She was the daughter of the late Louigi and Gennie (Laresa) Pais.

Her husband, Joseph Sedlak, died in 1958.

She leaves her son, Richard Sedlak of Easthampton; two sisters, Rose Gramaldi and Louise Falcetti, both of Westfield; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Rev. Alan R. Wood
BELCHERTOWN -- The Rev. Alan R. Wood, 51, of Belchertown and Oak Bluffs, died suddenly July 1, 1997 in Belchertown.
He was the son of Franklin P. and Ruth (Arthur) Wood of Fall River.

He moved to Belchertown on June 30 from Fitchburg, where he had served as minister to the Faith United Parish for the past three years. He was to have served as the pastor of Hope United Methodist Church in Belchertown. He previously had served at Christ United Methodist Church in Vineyard Haven for 10 years, and also at Lamberts Cove Church in West Tisbury.

He was the current chairman of the committee on Parish and Community Development of the board of Global Ministries Inc. of the New England Conference of the Methodist Church.

Mr. Wood leaves his wife, Marsha (Thurmond) Wood; a son, Thomas A. Wood of Oak Bluffs; three daughters, Terryl Y. Davis of Watertown, Jennie R. Carroll of Edgartown and Amy L. Wood of Arlington, Va.; a sister, Barbara L. Kaye of Centersville; and a grandson.

A memorial service will be held Saturday afternoon in Christ United Methodist Church in Vineyard Haven.

John W. Carlisle

NORTHAMPTON -- John W. Carlisle, 83, of Northampton died July 3, 1997 at the Mediplex Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Northampton.

Born in Watertown, N.Y. in 1914, he was the son of Floyd and Edna (Rogers) Carlisle.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

He lived most of his life in New York before settling here in 1986 to be near his family.

He worked for St. Regis Paper Co., Consolidated Edison, and Grumman Aircraft, all in New York.

He leaves his wife of 58 years, Lee (Stephenson) Carlisle of Northampton; a son, Jonathan Carlisle of Lewisville, N.C.; a daughter, Candace R. Carlisle of Northampton; three grandchildren; and a great granddaughter.

A private memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.

O'Connell Funeral Home of Northampton is in charge of arrangements.

Kathryn Ezold

NORTHAMPTON -- Kathryn (Zapka) Ezold, 80, of 9 Prospect Heights, died Wednesday, July 2, 1997 in Valley View Nursing Home in Westfield.

Born in Northampton on August 7, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Martin and Anna (Konecnik) Zapka.

She was educated in Hatfield and Northampton schools.

She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Holyoke.

She was also a member of the Deerfield Art Association and the Williamsburg Paint and Pallette Club, where she studied with Gretta Carey.

She was the widow of Herbert B. Ezold, who died in 1990.

She leaves a son, Herbert W. Ezold of Northampton; a daughter, Laurel A. Beaulieu of Niantic, Conn.; three sisters, Martha Amatt of Taylor, S.C, Lillian Hebert of South Hadley and Jeannette Pontbriand of Centerville; and two grandchildren.

A private funeral will be held at the Pease Funeral Home on Tuesday.

Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery in Florence.

Calling hours are Monday evening at the funeral home.

Memorial gifts may be made to the First Lutheran Church School, 1810 Northampton St., Holyoke, Ma. 01040 or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Virginia Thatcher

PLAINFIELD -- Virginia Ann (Robbins) Thatcher, 59, of 1 Pleasant St., died July 3, 1997 at The Cooley Dickinson Hospital.

She was the daughter of Frank and Esther (Norrie) Robbins of Cummington.

She and her husband operated Thatcher's Dairy Farm.

Mrs. Thatcher was a member of Plainfield Congregational Church. She was also a member of Plainfield Grange, an officer in Hillside Pommona Grange and a member of state and national granges.

Besides her parents, she leaves her husband, Arthur C. Thatcher; three sons, Dennis Thatcher, Eugene Thatcher and Charles Thatcher, all of Plainfield; two daughters, Denise Sessions of Plainfield, and Arleen Snape of Chesterfield; two sisters, Lillian Bisbee of Chesterfield and Elaine Pratt of Worthington, and seven grandchildren.

Eleanor M. Albright

SOUTH HADLEY -- Eleanor M. (Wiggins) Albright, 80, of South Hadley, died July 3, 1997 in Baystate Medical Center in Springfield.

Born in Liverpool, N.Y., Oct. 25, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Alton and Mary (Lane) Wiggins.

She was a 1935 graduate of Rochester, N.Y., High School, and had worked as a secretary at the Shuron Optical Co. and the American Can Co. in Geneva, N.Y.

She moved to South Hadley in 1989.

She leaves her husband, Eugene Albright; a son, Eugene Albright Jr. of Clarkston, Mich.; a daughter, Patricia Albright of South Hadley, and three grandchildren.

The funeral and burial will be at the convenience of the family.

John F. Backiel

CHICOPEE -- John F. Backiel, 79, of Chicopee, formerly of Northampton, died July 4, 1997 in the Williamansett Nursing Home in Chicopee.

Born in Hadley June 11, 1918, he was the son of the late John and Pauline (Grzeszkiewicz) Backiel.

He was educated in Northampton schools. He lived in Northampton before moving to Springfield in 1950.

He was a 20-year employee of Riverside Amusement Park in Agawam, retiring in 1982.

He leaves a brother, Valerian Backiel of Hyde Park, N.Y.; two nephews, and two nieces.

The funeral will be Tuesday morning from the Czelusniak Northampton Funeral Home.

Mildred A. Brodin

BELCHERTOWN -- Mildred A. (Tarrant) Brodin, 76, of 33A Everett Acres, died July 2, 1997 at the Elaine Health and Rehabilitation Center in Hadley.

Born in Quebec, Canada, Nov. 1, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Frank A. and Gertrude E. (Martin) Tarrant.

She spent most of her life in Pelham before moving to Belchertown.

She leaves a son, Joseph Harris of Ware; three grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Douglass Funeral Service of Amherst is handling arrangements.

Ethel Mae Childs

HARWICH -- Ethel Mae Childs, 83, of Harwich, formerly of South Hadley, died July 3, 1997 in Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.

Born in Holyoke June 17, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Robert S. and Ella M. (Kady) Childs.

Miss Childs worked for 43 years as secretary and treasurer of the H.M. Spencer Paper Co. in Holyoke, retiring in 1976.

She leaves two nephews, whom she raised, David O. Childs of Hyannis and Stephen P. Childs of Lynnwood, Wash.

Doane, Beal and Ames Funeral Home of Hyannis is handling arrangements.

Evelyn M. Doyle

EASTHAMPTON -- Evelyn M. (Ramsey) Doyle, 85, of Chapman Avenue, died July 4, 1997 in Baystate Medical Center in Springfield.

Born in Easthampton Sept. 25, 1911, she was the daughter of the late Tristam and Margaret (Cameron) Ramsey.

She leaves a son, John Doyle of Florence; three daughters, Ann Koch of Victorville, Calif., and Veronica Guerin and Karen Doyle, both of Easthampton; a brother, John Ramsey of Easthampton; a sister, Mary Clay of New Port Richie, Fla.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held Tuesday morning from the O'Brien Funeral Home.

Jennie M. Ducharme

NORTHAMPTON -- Jennie M. (Goscenski) Ducharme, 77, of 328D Laurel Ridge Apartments, died July 5, 1997 at a local nursing home.

Born in Sunderland July 27, 1919, she was the daughter of the late John and Rose (Witka) Goscenski.

She attended Sunderland schools, and had lived in Northampton for most of her life.

She leaves her husband of 56 years, David O. Ducharme; a daughter, Patricia A. LeBeau of Easthampton; a sister, Sophie Dudek of Chicopee; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Tuesday morning from the Czelusniak Northampton Funeral Home.
