ROSS K. NEAL, age 88, a lifelong resident of Hull, died on Tuesday, July 1st at his home after a brief illness. Mr. Neal was born in Hull and was a graduate of Hingham High School. He was a Navy Veteran of World War II and was an active member of the Hull VFW Post. For many years he was associated with the Hull Light Department.
He leaves his brother Haig P. Neal of Hull, 2 nephews; General Richard J. Neal, USMC of Washington , DC and Robert A. Neal of Hull, and 3 nieces; Nancy Hashey of Tampa, FL, Pamela Neal of Tennessee and Rojean Booker of Hull. He was also the brother of the late John C. Neal, the late Robert B. Neal and the late Frederic S. Neal.
A graveside service will be conducted on Thursday, July 10th at 11 AM at the Hull Village Cemetery
in Hull.

EUGENE F. BROWNE, age 77, a Hingham resident since 1966, died on Sunday,
July 6th at the South Shore Nursing Facility in Rockland. Mr. Browne was born and raised in South Boston and was a 1951 graduate of Boston University. During World War II, he served in the United States Marine Corps on Iwo Jima. He was an accoutant for General Dynamics in Quincy for 20 years, retiring in the mid 1970's. Active in local politics, Mr. Browne was a former chairman of the Hingham Democratic Town Committee. He also was a member of the Edward Ball Cole American Legion Post in Hingham and the Hingham V.F.W. Post # 6053.
He leaves his wife, Barbara J. (Cowie) Browne of Hingham and two daughters; Allyson Clarke Anderson and Jennifer Starratt Carr both of Kingston. He was the brother of Helen Dupont of Myrtle Beach, SC and Mary Walters of Vero Beach, FL; and grandfather of Christopher Anderson, Colby Anderson and Lindsay Carr all of Kingston.
A Memorial Service will be conducted on Thursday, July 10th at 11 AM at the Old Ship Church, 90 Main St., Hingham, MA 02043.
Friends may visit at the Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel, 21 Pond St., Hingham on Wednesday from 2-4 & 7-9 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Old Ship Church.
The interment in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne is to be private.
JOHN WEEKS RICE, 84, of Hingham, died unexpectedly on June 12th at the Palm Drive Hospital in Sebastopol, California while visiting family. He was born in Hingham to Abbie (Conley) and George Brackett Rice. Mr Rice graduated from Brookline High School, Harvard College in 1940 and received his Masters in Education from Boston University. He served with the First Air Commando group of the Army Air Corp during World War II in India. He started his career teaching English and then went on to become one of the first computer programmers at the John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company in Boston, retiring after 25 years as a member of the Quarter Century Club. After his retirement, Mr Rice continued his interest in education, teaching at Bridgewater State College and assisting at the computer center.
Prior to moving back to Hingham several years ago, Mr. Rice lived in Scituate for 38 years and was married to the late Clarice McHenry Rice for 52 years. He was an active member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Scituate where he had been the Senior Warden, lay reader, parish historian and choir member. He also started and directed a parish theater group. Mr. Rice loved music and theater and was a charter member of the Choral Arts Society. He had sung and performed with various choral groups on the South Shore in addition to being in a number of Gilbert and Sullivan productions. Mr. Rice had also been a member of Satuit Masonic Lodge of Scituate, holding the position of chaplain. He was an avid sailor and had been a member of the Friendship Sloop Society.
He leaves his wife Edith (Pratt) Howard of Hingham, a daughter; Judith Ahonen and her husband John of Milton; a son, Benjamin Rice of Attleboro; and his brother, Frederick Rice of Florida. Stepfather of Catherine, Amy and Ted Howard all of California. Also survived by 3 grandchildren and 5 step grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be conducted on Saturday, July 12th at 11 AM at the Church of St. John the Evangelist, 172 Main St., Hingham. Visiting hours and flowers omitted by request.

WINONA MAE (POCHER) FREDIE, of Deltona, Florida, formerly of Hingham, died on Monday, July 7th at the Imperial Point Hospital in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. She was 91. She was born in Cambridge on July 14, 1911 the only daughter of Berry Henry and Elvia Mae (Lennon) Pocher.
She graduated from Hingham High School in 1928, Portia Law School in Boston with a Bachelor of Law degree (L.L.B.) in 1933, and in 1975 was awarded a juris doctor (J.D.) from New England Law School. She had an extensive law library but loved reading and writing poetry, completing her most recent poem shortly before her death.
Her professional career spanned over 40 years. She worked for many government agencies including, The Registry of Motor Vehicles, The Selective Service Bureau, The United States Customs Service and The Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Her greatest personal career achievement and enjoyment was working on the election campaigns for The Honorable Edward W. Brooke and her crisis management efforts working with families in Scituate who had been displaced or lost their homes during The Blizzard of 1978. She received an award from FEMA and the Town of Scituate for her extraordinary efforts. She was an active supporter of the Hingham Commuter Boat and worked behind the scenes to obtain legislative support and state aid for it. Upon her retirement she was given a replica of "The Gracious Lady" for those efforts.
Winona was an active member of the Altar Guild and Couples Club at The Church of St. John the Evangelist, The South Shore Citizens Club, The United Negro College Fund and many other organizations and charities. She also served on the Hingham Town Republican Committee. She was more comfortable with a hammer, nail and saw than she was with things domestic and quite often worked alongside her father and Julian K. Fredie, Sr, her husband of 64 years. In fact, if there was anything more defining of whom Winona was it was the deep and abiding relationship she had with Julian and the love she gave her sons. Winona's care for Julian as he struggled with Alzheimer's disease was remarkable. Her last words to him "You're so handsome", were reflective of that love.
Besides her husband, Winona leaves two sons, Julian K., Jr. of Braintree and Edwin P. of Pompano Beach, FL; daughters-in-law Deanna and Marcia; six grandchildren, Christine Kimberly Belcastro, Cynthia Irvin, Kenya, Michael and Christopher Fredie, Alexandra Madzunovic and 6 great grandchildren. She also leaves several relatives and friends all of whom have shared in the loving kindness and disciplined guidance she gave to all.
A Funeral Service will be conducted on Saturday, July 12th at 1:30 PM at the Church of St. John the Evangelist, 172 Main St., Hingham, MA 02043.

MARGUERITE E. (NEWTON) WISWELL, age 85, a resident of Hingham for the past 55 years, died on Tuesday, August 5th at her home after a brief illness. Mrs. Wiswell was born and raised in Worcester and spent her summers in Nantasket. For 25 years she was a well known waitress at the Olde Mill Grille restaurant in Hingham. She retired in the mid 1970's.
Wife of the late Richard J. Cronin, Sr. and the late Norwell L. Wiswell, she leaves two daughters; Virginia Parsons of Weymouth and Marguerite Iaria of Hingham. Also survived by 9 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. She was the mother of the late Richard J. Cronin, Jr. and sister of the late Alice Brenner and the late Miriam Newton.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, August 8th at 10 AM at St. Ann's Church, corner of Samoset Ave. and Lewis St., Hull.
Visiting hours at the Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel, 21 Pond St., Hingham on Thursday evening from 4-8 PM.

The interment will be in St. Paul's Cemetery, Hingham.
PATRICK J. KELLEY, JR., age 41, of Quincy, died on July 2nd, 2003 at his home after a brief illness. Mr. Kelley was born in Boston. For the past 25 years was a self-employed roofer and restoration specialist in the City of Boston. He was a veteran of the Army's 1st Infantry Division and a Commemorated soldier for his service in the Persian Gulf War, Desert Storm. His early years in the military took him to Germany, Italy, Austria and the Persian Gulf. He spent his winter months in Naples, Florida where he enjoyed family, friends and fishing.
He leaves his two sons; Ryan and Luke Kelley of Norton, MA. He was the son of Elaine M. (Kulesza) Kelley of Naples, FL and the late Patrick J. Kelley, Sr. Brother of William Kelley, Susan Bacon and brother-in-law Charles Bacon all of Naples, FL. Also survived by his dear and close companion Kimberly Bersani of Quincy.
Relatives and friends are invite to attend a graveside service on Thursday, August 7th at 1 PM at the Massachusetts National Cemetery
in Bourne.

MARION E. (BURRELL) CUTTING, age 87, died on Monday, Oct. 6th at the Southwood Nursing Center in Norwell after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease.
Born in Weymouth, Mrs. Cutting was a lifelong resident of Hingham, graduating from Hingham High School. During the 1940's and 50's she was a telephone operator in Hingham, and as the wife of the late Hingham Firefighter, Albert R. Cutting, Sr., she was the first President of the Hingham Firewives Association.
She was the mother of Dorothy G. Cutting and Albert R. Cutting, Jr., both of Hingham, and sister of Virginia Clark of Port Charlotte, FL and F. Gilman Burrell of Frederica, DE. Grandmother of Jacquelyn Powers of Hanover and Robert R. Cutting of Scituate. Great Grandmother of Nicolette, Kaitlyn, Tyler, Christine and Courtney. Aunt of Marylou Tutkus of Hingham, Sandy Boermeester of Pembroke, Marsha Dugas of Brewster, Richard G. Burrell of Upton and Wayne Clark of Marshfield.
A Funeral Service will be conducted on Thursday, Oct. 9th at 11 AM at the Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel, 21 Pond St., Hingham.
Friends may visit at the Downing Chapel on Wednesday evening from 7-9 PM.

VERA (PARKER) MCKEAG of Falmouth, died on October 5th at the Falmouth Hospital. She was 92. Mrs. McKeag was born in Weymouth where she lived most of her life. In her later years, she lived in Barnstable, Naples, Florida and most recently in Falmouth. During the 1930' & 40's she was a secretary for the Monsanto Chemical Co. of Everett. Mrs. McKeag, along with her husband of 49 years, the late David "Lefty" McKeag, owned and operated The Skipper Restaurant in South Yarmouth, and also Barker's Stationary Store in Quincy Square. During her life she was active in charity work for several churches and loved doing arts and crafts for others.
She leaves her son, Donald P. McKeag of Falmouth, her daughter, Judith Elliott of Naples, FL., and sister, Jean Nadell of San Rafael, CA. Also survived by 3 grandsons, 2 great grandsons and many loving nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Service will be conducted on Friday, Oct. 10th at 10 AM at the Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel, 21 Pond St., Hingham.

Interment will be in the North Weymouth Cemetery.
DODE E. (EDWARDS) FORBES, age 93, of Norwell, MA, formerly of Collingswood, NJ, died on Friday August 22nd at the Norwell Knoll Nursing Home. Born in Philadelphia, PA, Mrs. Forbes spent her early life in Pitman, NJ. She was a longtime resident of Collingswood before moving to Norwell in October of 1998.
Wife of the late J. Wallace Forbes, DDS, she leaves her son, J. Dexter Forbes, MD of Sewickley, PA and daughter, Lynn F. Muller of Hingham, MA. She was the grandmother of Robert C. Muller, II of Dedham, MA, J. Kurt Muller of Burlington, VT and Hingham, MA, Heather W. Forbes and J. Graham Forbes both of Sewickley, PA. She was the sister of the late Grace Risk of Birmingham, MI.
The interment was private. A Memorial Service will be conducted on Saturday, Nov. 8th at 10:30 AM at the Norwell Knoll Nursing Home, 329 Washington St., Norwell, MA.
MISS PRISCILLA BAILEY, age 85, of Milton and Halifax, died on Wednesday, Dec. 3rd at the South Shore Hospital in Weymouth after a brief illness. Born in Brookline, she spent her early life in Jamaica Plain. A graduate of Bouve College, now part of Northeastern University, Miss Bailey was a member of the Northeastern University Hall of Fame. She had been a member of the faculty at Milton Academy for over 40 years before retiring in 1983. For most of that time she was the Head of the Girls' Athletic Department. The school recognized her long service by awarding her the Milton Medal in 1994. A separate award has been established in her name and is given to that student who most exemplifies her hard work and dedication to sportsman-like conduct.
In addition to competing regularly for almost 40 years in women's golf tournaments across the state, she was active behind the scenes as well. Among other duties, she was a past member of the Women's Golf Association of Massachusetts executive and nominating committees and helped found the WGAM's junior scholarship program. She was a past president of the Women's South Shore Golf League. She also was a former member of the Marshfield Country Club and at the time of her death was a member at the Country Club of Halifax.
Miss Bailey leaves her sister Nancy C. Black of Cohasset, and was the aunt of Deborah Drain of Duxbury and Paul Black of Hingham. Great Aunt of Geoffrey and Timothy Drain both of Duxbury; and Ian Black and Hannah Black both of Hingham.
A Memorial Service will be conducted on Monday, Dec. 8th at 11 AM at the Apthorp Chapel at Milton Academy, 170 Centre St., Milton, MA 02186.

POLLY (HERSEY) MARTIN, age 71, a lifelong resident of Hingham, died on Saturday, Nov. 29th at her home after a brief illness. Born in Hingham, Mrs. Martin was a 1950 graduate of Hingham High School. She was a home health aide by profession for over 25 years; first with the Hingham Visiting Nurse Association and then from 1985 to 2000 she was engaged in private practise in the South Shore area. She enjoyed vacationing on Cape Cod and wintering in Port Charlotte, Florida. Mrs. Martin also loved gardening and antiques.
She was the wife of Kenneth H. Martin of Hingham; and mother of Diane D. Ham of Taunton, Donna D. Kelly of Hudson, Ohio, Gordon M. Dunley of Belton, Missouri and Douglas B. Dunley of Abington. Step-Mother of Gerald Martin of Hingham and Glenn Martin of Brockton. Sister of Gordon Hersey and Stanley Hersey both of Hingham. Also survived by 11 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild and many nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be conducted on Wednesday, Dec. 3rd at 11 AM at the First Baptist Church, 85 Main St., Hingham, MA 02043.

ALAN L. GARDNER, age 73, Retired Captain of the Hull Fire Department, died on Sunday, Nov. 23rd at his home in Dunedin, Florida after a brief illness. He was born in Hull and was a lifelong resident of the town. Mr. Gardner served on active duty with the United States Air Force from 1957-1962 where he played the trombone with the Air Force Band in Washington , DC and Germany. Following his military service he joined the Hull Fire Department and retired as a captain in 1991. He was a member of the Hull Permanent Firefighters Association and the Richardson VFW Post, also in Hull. He retired to Dunedin, Florida in 1995.
He leaves his wife of 45 years, Joyce (Gittins) Gardner.
A Graveside Service will be conducted on Thursday, Dec. 4th at 10 AM at the Hull Village Cemetery, Nantasket Ave., Hull.
