Francis, Joseph L.
Francis, Joseph L., 98 of Boylston and formerly of Yarmouthport, died Friday Feb. 20 at the Westborough Healthcare Center in Westborough. He was the husband of the late Bessie (Cash) Francis, who died in 1998 and the late Mary (Sylvia) Francis, who died in 1967.
Born and raised in Provincetown, Mr. Francis was educated in Provincetown public schools.
Mr. Francis served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II, serving at the Coast Guard Station in Eastham.
As a young boy, Mr. Francis worked for several years on the fish pier in Provincetown. He moved to New Bedford in the mid-1920’s, where he worked for several local grocery stores. He moved to Hyannis in the early 1930’s and worked for the Barnstable recreation dept. teaching various crafts and helping to set up softball leagues. From 1949 until his retirement in 1964, Mr. Francis worked as a diesel engineer at the North Truro Air Force Base. After the war, Mr. Francis returned to Hyannis and moved to Yarmouthport in 1950 and then to Boylston in 1999.
In 1949, Mr. Francis became aware of a need of assistance for the many disable veterans located on the Cape and Islands, he decided to start a chapter of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV). He became a Charter Member of Chapter 96 of the DAV. In 1999, Chapter 96 celebrated its 50th year of service to the Cape and Island. At this celebration there were only two charter members alive, Joe Francis being one of them.
Mr. Francis accumulated over 50 thousand hours as a volunteer, transporting numerous veterans to VA hospitals throughout New England. He realized the great need for a VA outpatient Clinic on the Cape; he campaigned for untold years. His dream was achieved in the late 1990's when a clinic was established in Hyannis, allowing the Cape and Islands veterans a closer medical and mental health facility.
Joe some how found time to volunteer in the Coast Guard Auxiliary; inspecting boats of all sizes and instructing safer water craft handling.
He was a faultless patriot, believing we, as a people, should always be aware of the needs of the less fortunate and our country, the greatest in the world.
As we celebrate his life, we his family, now have the responsibility to pass on his values to our young children and all new born into our large family. We are sure he is happy and proud knowing he will always be remembered.
Mr. Francis is survived by two daughters, Patricia Bourbeau of Boylston and Madeline Powell of Amherst; a sister, Cecelia Souza of Stuart, FL; fourteen grandchildren; twenty nine great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Josephine Lusby.
Funeral services will begin at 9 a.m. Thursday Feb. 26 in the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave., South Yarmouth to be followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Pius X Church, Station Ave., South Yarmouth.
Interment will follow in Ancient Cemetery, Yarmouthport.
Visiting hours will be held from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday Feb. 25 in the funeral home.

Story, Walter E.
Story, Walter E., 28, of Dennis ,died Friday, February 13 at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis, MA. He was the beloved companion of Kim Lubien of West Dennis for 12 years and her children Danielle and Brandon.
Mr. Story was born in Hyannis and raised in Dennis. He attended Cape Cod Regional Technical High School. Mr. Story owned and operated Antique’s Plus Restorations in Dennis, MA. He started restoring furniture at the age of 7 under the direction of David Barlow.
Mr. Story enjoyed boating, fishing, music and spending time with Danielle and Brandon.
He was the son of Walter L. Story, Jr. of Brewster and Mary Anne (Walsh) Speight of Dennis, stepson of Allen Speight of Dennis and brother of Obed M. Story of Dennis, Thomas W. Story of Dennis and Ethel E. Brueggeman and her husband Karl of Brockton. He was the nephew of Nancy L. Story of West Yarmouth, Obed J. Elland of Iowa and the late Barbara M. Smith. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday March 25 at 1:00 PM at the Dennis Union Church, Dennis, MA. Phaneuf, Ernest O.
Phaneuf, Ernest O., 97, of South Yarmouth died Monday February 23 at the JML Care Center, Falmouth, MA .
Husband of Florence E. (Belair) Phaneuf of Falmouth formerly of South Yarmouth for 67 years.
Mr. Phaneuf was born and raised in Worcester. He graduated from Commerce High School class of 1925 and New England School of Accounting class of 1927. He retired from National Standard Co. in 1972 where he worked for 45 years as a purchasing agent.
Mr. Phaneuf was one of the original officers in the Cobb little League, Worcester, MA. He played the saxophone and clarinet in several area bands. He and his wife moved to South Yarmouth from Worcester in 1972.
Father of Robert E. Phaneuf of Sterling, Donald R. Phaneuf of Sutton and Janice E. Leary of Hyannis, MA. Brother of Florence Lien of Worcester. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Martin, Cornelius Joseph
Martin, Cornelius Joseph, 76 of West Yarmouth died Saturday February 14 at his home.
Mr. Martin was born in Somerville and raised in Charlestown. He graduated from Boston English. He entered to U. S. Navy during WW 11. He lived in Dorchester until moving to West Yarmouth in 1987. He was a long time employee of the MDC (Metropolitan District Commission) he retired in 1992 as a Manger.
Mr. Martin was a communicant of St. Pius X Parish. He was an avid golfer, a member of the Leo J. Martin Club, Weston, MA. He was known by his neighbors and friends as the Mayor of Jay Bird Lane. He was known to hold court on his front porch.

O'Neill, Hubert
O'Neill, Hubert, “Hugh” 79 of Yarmouthport died Friday February 27 at the Mary McCarthy Hospice House, Sandwich, MA.
Husband of Mary Elizabeth “Betty” (Farrell) O’Neill of Yarmouthport for 53 years.
Mr. O’Neill was born and raised in Lynn. He graduated from Lynn English High School class of 1942. After high School he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. During a bombing mission over Germany his B 17 was shot down. He landed and was captured in Holland. He was a prisoner of war for 17 month at Stalag 17. After he was liberated he and his fellow POW where marched 300 miles.
Mr. O’Neill retired from the Federal Government after 37 ½ years as an Engineer Technician. He worked at the Watertown Arsenal and the Picitinney, NJ Arsenal until his retirement in 1980. After retiring he and his wife moved to Yarmouth from Sparta, NJ.
Mr. O’Neill enjoyed golfing, gardening and swimming. He was a member and past commander of the Sparta, NJ. VFW. He was a communicant of St. Pius X Church, member of the Knight of Columbus, and the St. Pius Men’s Club.
Father of Dennis James O’Neill of Pound Ridge, NY. Brother of Donald O’Neill of West Corvina, CA. Grandfather of Matthew O’Neill. He is also survived by nieces and nephews. Johnson, Robert E.
Johnson, Robert E., 76 of South Yarmouth and formerly of Westwood and Tuftonboro, NH, died Thursday Feb. 26 at the Windsor Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in South Yarmouth. He was the husband of Vilma (Johnson) Johnson for 47 years.
Born and raised in West Roxbury, Mr. Johnson was a graduate of Roslindale High School. He is also a graduate of Boston University. Mr. Johnson served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was honorably discharged with the rank of Radarman Third Class in 1946.
Mr. Johnson worked for a number of High Tech and Real Estate concerns in the Boston area as an accountant and financial officer. He retired in 1987. Mr. Johnson lived in Westwood from 1958 to 1987, Tuftonboro, NH from 1987 to 1995, and in Yarmouthport from 1995 until he moved to South Yarmouth in 1998.
For 35 years, Mr. Johnson enjoyed spending time at the family home on Lake Winnepesaukee in New Hampshire. He was an avid powerboater throughout his life and enjoyed golfing in his retirement years.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Johnson is survived by two sons, Roy D. Johnson and his wife, Leigh of Portola Valley, CA and Paul R. Johnson and his wife, Karen of Cape Elizabeth, ME; a brother Richard S. Johnson of Naples, FL; five grandchildren, Calvin and Natalie Johnson both of Portola Valley, CA and Alexander, Peter and Ross Johnson, all of Cape Elizabeth, ME; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Carol Hunt Danielson.
A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
Interment will be private.

Johnson, Stella A. (Emerson)
Johnson, Stella A. (Emerson), 87 of Yarmouthport, died Feb. 21 at the Windsor Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in South Yarmouth. She was the wife of the late Arthur M. Johnson.
Born, raised and educated in Yonkers, NY, Mrs. Johnson also spent some of her youth living with her aunt, Gertrude Cressey, in Yarmouthport.
At the time of her marriage in 1934, Mrs. Johnson moved to Worcester where she lived until moving to Yarmouthport in 1943.
Mrs. Johnson was an avid gardener, enjoyed painting, wildlife, quilting, doing crafts and cooking.
She is survived by a son, Arthur M. Johnson, Jr. of Westerly, RI; a daughter, Carol (CJ) Miles of Carlsborg, WA; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Jane Ellen Woodburn.
Funeral services will be private.

Burkhart, Eunice "Starr" M. (Stoker)
Burkhart, Eunice "Starr" M. (Stoker), 65, of S. Yarmouth on March 16 at Cape Regency Nursing Home, Centerville. Mrs. Burkhart was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA and graduated from Brentwood High School. She was a legal secretary for a number of attorney’s and secretary at the Allegheny Club in Pittsburgh for 4 years before joining Eat’N Park Restaurant, Inc. doing prep work and training for 8 years retiring in 1994.
She volunteered her services in Pittsburgh to the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Children’s Hospital. She moved to South Yarmouth from Pittsburgh in 1999. Survivors include her mother Eunice Stoker of Charleroi, PA, a daughter Cheryl L. Ecklund of S. Yarmouth, a brother Tom Stoker of Jefferson Boro, PA and sister Linda Mayou of Monongahela, PA. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Julie Ecklund of Taunton, Shanna Ecklund of S. Yarmouth and Ashley Ecklund of Houston and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by a son and daughter, Billy Spurrier and Terry Spurrier. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Pittsburgh, PA. Evans, Barbara E. (Connellee)
Evans, Barbara E. (Connellee), 71, of Dennis, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday (March 16).
She was the wife of Gordon Evans.
Born in Montdair, New Jersey, she graduated from St. Lawrence University, Canton, New York after graduating from Brighton High School in Rochester, New York.
After visiting the Cape for many years, she and her husband settled in Dennis in 1985. A devoted gardener, Barbara was an active member of the Cape Cod Wildflower Council.
In addition to her husband, Barbara is survived by three sons, Lindsey of Clearwater, Florida; Dr. William of Clinton, Mississippi: and John of Burlington, Kansas, and two daughters, Leslie Whitesell of Lusby, Maryland and Sarah Dumont ofAbilene, Texas , and six grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers, Alfred Connellee of Short Hills, New Jersey and William Connellee of John's Island, South Carolina.
Memorial services will be scheduled at a later time.

Arnold, Dr. John F.
Arnold, Dr. John F., 86 of East Harwich, MA, died Friday March 19 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, MA, after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Grace (Strachan) Arnold who died in 2002. They had been married for 54 years.
Born in Heightstown, NJ, Dr. Arnold was raised and educated in Hasbrouck Heights, NJ. He graduated from Hasbrouck Heights High School in 1936, where he was a state track champion in the 100 and 200 yard dash. Dr. Arnold was also a graduate of the University of Virginia and the University of Illinois Dental School in Chicago.
A veteran of World War II, Dr. Arnold served in the U.S. Navy in the Philippines and was honorably discharged as a Lieutenant.
From 1948 to 1979, Dr. Arnold practiced dentistry in Kearny, NJ and lived in Nutley, NJ for over 25 years. He was an Honorary Life Member of the Forest Hill Field Club in Bloomfield, NJ since 1955. He moved his dental practice to Dennis, MA in 1979 and lived in South Yarmouth, MA. In 1981, he became a member of the Cummaquid Golf Club. He was also a member of St. David’s Episcopal Church. At the time of his retirement in 2000, he moved to East Harwich. At that time, was the oldest practicing dentist on Cape Cod.
An avid golfer, Dr. Arnold was the proud owner of two hole-in-ones. He was an accomplished pianist, loved music and animals and enjoyed traveling to the Caribbean, Hawaii, California and the British Islands. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren.
Dr. Arnold is survived by three sons, Douglas S. Arnold of Simsbury, CT, John F. Arnold, Jr. of Toms River, NJ and Robert H. Arnold of East Harwich; a daughter, Nancy A. Devaney of Narragansett, RI; twelve grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday March 23 in St. David’s Episcopal Church, 205 Main St., South Yarmouth.
Interment will be private.
