Chester S. Shalginewicz, 53, of East Bridgewater, died peacefully Jan. 18, 2009. Native of Brockton, he was graduated from Brockton High School in 1973, earned a Bachelor of Science degree with highest honors from Northeastern University and then a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice. For many years Chet was an operations manager for Christy’s Markets and for the past seven years was a field representative for Tedeschi Food Shops. Chet was a communicant and dedicated volunteer at St. John Church in East Bridgewater. A proud homeowner, he unselfishly enjoyed caring for his family and their needs, enjoyed cigar smoking and in between watched science fiction shows. Grace Marie (Oriola) Lally, 97, of Brockton, died Jan. 16, 2009. Native of Italy, she was educated in Brockton. For most of her life she was proprietor of Grace Marie’s Beauty Salon at 638 North Main St. in Brockton. She enjoyed visiting her son and his family in North Andover and at the ocean in Ogunquit, Maine. Grace Marie was the loving wife of the late Anthony A. Lally, beloved mother of the late M. Rose F. (Jean-Francois) Joseph, of Brockton, died Jan. 12, 2009. Native of Haiti, she was a pediatrician who loved children and watching good movies. Rose had a great sense of humor and was well-loved by everyone. Mary A. (Rossetti) Fisher, 82, longtime of Brockton, died Jan. 11, 2009. She was an East Boston High School graduate, welder at Hingham Shipyard during World War II, longtime waitress in the Brockton area, in the 1970s started the first girl’s hockey team in Brockton. She retired to Florida and managed apartments there, returned to Brockton over 20 years ago and resided recently at Queset on the Pond in South Easton. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, and traveling. Robert E. Zaks, 67, of Brockton, died Jan. 3, 2009 after recent heart surgery. Native of Dorchester, he was a Boston College graduate and was retired after 35 years in the cashier’s department at the Boston Globe. Bob was active many years with Boy Scout Troop 5 at St. Edward Church and was a former assistant scoutmaster and current treasurer. He was recently a substitute teacher at Trinity Catholic Academy, a member of Randolph Elks and John P. McKeon Amvets Post in Dorchester, enjoyed gardening, golfing and reading and was a history buff. Robert was a dear son of Genevieve (Ziolkowski) Zaks of Dorchester and the late Edmund Zaks, beloved husband of Deborah A. Douglas M. Allen, 45, of Brockton, died unexpectedly Jan. 2, 2009. Raised in Brockton, Doug graduated Brockton High School in 1981. He was co-owner of Easton Insurance Agency, Inc. on Route 138 in Easton with his mother and was a former adjustor with Aetna Insurance. Doug was a musician, playing guitar and bass locally, was a longtime friend, mentor and coach with Brockton Youth Hockey, enjoyed playing golf and was a member of Brockton Country Club, coached soccer, enjoyed fishing and going to the beach and was a member of the Board of Directors of Metro South Insurance Agents. Douglas was a dear son of Ronald and Dolores Allen of Brockton, beloved husband of Michelle, loving father of Ashley, Casey and Justin, brother of Bill Allen of Quincy, son-in-law of Mary and James Morrill of Florida and brother-in-law of James and Brian Morrill. Henry J. Beltram, 97, of Boston, passed away at Good Samaritan Medical Center on February 25, 2010. Henry lived a long and happy life. A former employee of First National Stores in Somerville, he retired at 65 to pursue other interests. A well read man, he was an avid book collector with a great thirst for knowledge and a great curiosity for life. He was a true Boston Red Sox fan and attended many games at Fenway Park. Henry was the son of the late John and Catherine Beltrami, husband of the “love of his life” the late Mary (Nestico) Beltram, loving father of Catherine Nocella and Donna Peeters and her husband George, caring friend to his son-in-law Frank Nocella, brother of the late Helen Lydon and Linda Goggin, beloved grandfather of Nicole Lewis and her husband Shawn, Christopher Peeters, and the late Joseph W. A homemaker, she enjoyed needlework and reading. Julio Angelo “Jay” Salerno, 81, of Norwell and Marion, died February 5, 2010 surrounded by his family at Quincy Medical Center after a brief illness. A builder by trade and an innovative carpenter, he owned several businesses. A kind and gentle man, he was nicknamed “Smiley” and served in the U.S. Army during WWII. Julio took pleasure in spending summers in Marion and motor home camping in FL. A loving and devoted family man, he was an animal lover and enjoyed crossword puzzles, playing cribbage and whist, and New England sports teams. A son of the late Vito and Isabella Salerno, Julio was the husband of the late Carole E. Harold Stuart Smith Jr., 67, of Brockton, died February 6, 2010. A lifelong South Shore resident, he served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam era. A long time wedding photographer, he was employed as a project manager for Abel-Womack of Lawrence for over 25 years. He enjoyed traveling, cruises, Cape Cod, cooking, photography, bowling and golfing. Stu was a dear son of Bernice R. Smith of Florida and the late Harold S. Doreen A. (Augelli) Quaglia, 51, of Brockton, died December 29, 2009. A native of Roslindale and Hyde Park, she resided in Brockton for the past 20 years. She graduated from Quincy College, Phi Beta Theta with honors, with an A.B. in Paralegal Studies, in 1988. Doreen was employed as a health inspector for 15 years for the Brockton Board of Health and was named “Brockton’s Woman of The Year” in 2001. An advocate for autistic children, she was also engaged in charitable activities such as Secret Santa. Doreen was the daughter of Marilyn Augelli of Hyde Park and the late Douglas Augelli, beloved wife of Atty. Liza E. (Heffernan) Martens, 50, of Brockton, died Dec. 3, 2009 after a courageous seven-year battle with breast cancer. Raised in Avon, daughter of the late Herbert and Anne (Sandsbury) Heffernan, she graduated from Brockton High School in 1977 and was employed in customer service for Graphic Productions in Rockland and at I-Pac in Quincy. Liza’s courage was an inspiration to many. Anthony “Tony” DeVeiga, 70, lifelong of Brockton, died Aug. 7, 2009. Son of the late Anthony and Martha (Mayers), he served in the U.S. Air Force. He was retired from Plymouth Rubber Company and served as union president. Active in the Knights of Columbus, Tony was a 4th Degree Cardinal O’Connell Assembly member, a Seville Council # 93 member, past Grand Knight and past District Deputy, a St. Edith Stein Parish Council member, and a friend of Bill W. A senior advocate, Tony served on the Board of Directors of Brockton Housing Authority. He is survived by an aunt, cousins and many friends. Rodney A. Ellis, 81, of Brockton, native of Bridgewater, died August 14, 2011. A merchant marine for 10 years, he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. Rodney was a painter by trade for many years and also worked in landscaping. A member of Samoset Rod and Gun Club in West Bridgewater, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. Rodney was the son of the late Eldon and Viola (Thompson) Ellis; step-father of Wanda Colp of Sevierville, TN and William Mills of Batesburg, SC; brother of Phyllis Perry of OK, Gloria Hathaway of Bridgewater and the late Eldon Ellis Jr. and Arnold Kheary; grandfather of Nicole Colp; long time love of Barbara Roy; dear friend of Eva Miller and an uncle of many nieces and nephews. All are welcome to calling hours Thursday 4-6 p.m. in Belcher Chapel at Waitt Funeral Home, 850 North Main St. Brockton, followed by a 6 p.m. service. Committal Friday at 11:30 a.m. at Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
Monika (Janczurewicz) Mazonas, 77, of Brockton, died August 12, 2011. A native of Poland, she moved to Brockton and was employed as a seamstress at King-Size and retired from Sealy. A former communicant of St. Casimir Church and Our Lady of Ostrobrama Church, she enjoyed gardening and sewing. Monika was the wife of the late Anthony Mazonas; sister of the late Joseph, Jan and Zygmunt Janczurewicz. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and cousins. Earl E. Jacques, 64, of Brockton, died August 4, 2011. An avid motorcyclist, he loved country music and fishing and was a life member of Bass Master. Earl was the son of the late Fabina L. and Lillian M. (Strachan) Jacques; beloved husband of Janice M. (Audlee) Jacques; loving father of Catherine Jacques of ME and a dear step-father, grandfather and great-grandfather of many. Private family service.
