Marie E. (Smullen) Danahy, 81, died at the Caritas Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton on Tuesday, May 3 after a period of failing health. She was the wife of the late Joseph P. "Buddy" Danahy. Born in Brookline, Mrs. Danahy was a graduate of Stoughton High School, Class of 1942. She was a longtime resident of Stoughton. She was an Inspector at JW Wood and Kendall Co. in Stoughton for many years before retiring in 1990. She was a member of the Mass. Catholic Woman's Guild for many years.
Mrs. Danahy is survived by her brother, Raymond J. Smullen, Jr. of San Diego, CA. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Elizabeth Wrobleski and Joan Bagley. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt. 27) Stoughton on Friday from 8: 45-9: 45 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at Immaculate Conception Church, Stoughton at 10: 15 AM. Interment will take place at Knollwood Memorial Park in Canton.
GERALD F. McCARTHY

Gerald F. McCarthy, 60, died unexpectedly at his home on Saturday, April 30. Born in Brockton, he was a lifelong resident of Stoughton and a graduate of Stoughton Schools. Mr. McCarthy worked as a shipper for United Liquors in Braintree and West Bridgewater for many years. He was a member of the Randolph Elks, Teamsters Local 653 in Brockton and the Amvets in Stoughton. In his free time, he enjoyed working in his yard, gardening and spending time with his dog "Elbe".
He is survived by his brothers John T. McCarthy Sr., of Canton, Michael J. McCarthy of Stoughton and Robert L. McCarthy of Dedham and his sisters, Jean R. Rist, Alice M. O'Connor, and Laura L. Jewett all of Stoughton and Barbara F. Morrissey of Easton. He was predeceased by his parents William E. and Beatrice L. (Robichaud) McCarthy and his brother William E. McCarthy, Jr. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt. 27) Stoughton on Wednesday at 10 AM. Visiting Hours Tuesday 5-8 PM. Burial will follow at Avon Cemetery, Avon.
FLORENCE M. (BOURGEOIS) BATES

Florence M. (Bourgeois) Bates, 89, died Saturday at the Copley at Stoughton Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late Joseph R. Bates. Born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada, she was a graduate of St. Ann's School in Glace Bay. She came to the US in 1954 and settled in Dorchester. She was a resident of Dorchester for many years before moving to Quincy, where she lived for 15 years. She was a resident of Stoughton for 5 years. She was a homemaker. In her free time, she enjoyed playing Bingo, knitting, crocheting, traveling and playing the organ.
She is survived by her children, Frederick D. Bates of Stoughton, Marie Bartlett and Leone Toy both of Brockton, Janet Kennedy and David Bates both of Canada, Valerie Foley of Hingham and Richard J. Bates of FL. She is also survived by many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Funeral will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt. 27) Stoughton on Wednesday at 9 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at St. James Church at 10 AM. Visiting Hours Tuesday 5-8 PM. EMILY F. CORDARO

Emily F. Cordaro, 53, a longtime resident of Stoughton, died Friday at the Caritas Good Samaritan Medical in Brockton. Born in Boston, she was a graduate of Randolph Schools. Miss Cordaro worked as a Nurses Aide in the Norfolk Nursing Home and New England Sinai Hospital both in Stoughton for many years. In her free time, she enjoyed watching television, doing crossword puzzles, painting and doing arts & crafts. Recently, she enjoyed writing to soldiers overseas.
She is survived by her brothers and sisters, John J. Cordaro Jr. of Leicester, Mary Fenton of Stoughton, Angelina Fournier and Joseph F. Cordaro both of Worcester. She was predeceased by her parents, John J. Cordaro and Ellen (McManus) and her sister Catherine F. Crawford. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

LAWRENCE B. HOWARD

Lawrence B. Howard, 42, died unexpectedly at home in Worcester on Saturday, April 16 after suffering a heart attack. Born in Chelsea, he was raised in Brockton and a graduate of Brockton Schools. Mr. Howard worked as a mason for numerous employers in the area.
Mr. Howard is survived by his two sons, Michael and Steven. He was the son of Ruth (Burns) Howard of Brockton and the late Shelton Howard. He was the brother of Margaret A. Blouin of ME, David P. of Berkley, Nancy Bowman of Brockton and the late Richard S. Howard. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held in the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt. 27) Stoughton on Thursday night at 8 PM. Visiting Hours prior to the services from 5-8 PM. George Betts, 69, died Saturday at the Caritas Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton. He was the husband of 46 years of Barbara J. (McBrien) Betts. Born in Boston, he was raised in Hingham and a graduate of Hingham High School and also a graduate of Wentworth Institute in Boston. He was a Veteran of the United States Marine Corps. For many years, Mr. Betts worked as a Communications Engineer for the M. G. Betts Co. Inc., a company he started and owned. Prior to that he worked for Lakewood Communications in Stoughton. He was a member of the Egg Harbor Boating Association in New Jersey. In his free time, he enjoyed boating, woodworking and restoring boats.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Kenneth G. Betts and his wife Zinta of Lakeville, Karen A. Betts-Offley and her husband William Anfield of Brockton, Kevin M. Betts and his wife Tina of Fall River and Kimberly J. Betts of Arlington, VA. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren.

RALPH E. DANTE

Ralph E. Dante, 72, died Wednesday, April 13 at home in Stoughton. He was the husband of the late Ruth (Burns) Dante. Born in Boston, he was raised in Fields Corner, Dorchester and a graduate of Boston Schools. For many years, he worked as a factory worker at Morse Shoe in Canton. He has been retired for several years. In his free time, he enjoyed playing cards, greyhound racing, traveling and watching both sitcoms and wrestling on TV.
Mr. Dante is survived by his daughter, Laurie M. Dunn and her husband Larry of Rockland. He was the brother of Robert Dante of Rockland and the late Lorraine Murphy. He is also survived by his grandson, Daniel J. Dunn.

MARIE P. (LYNCH) O'BRIEN

Marie P. O'Brien, 66, beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, neighbor, and teacher, died suddenly Monday evening at her home in Raynham. She was the wife of 33 years of Stuart O'Brien. Education and faith were central themes in Mrs. O'Brien's life. Mrs. O'Brien attended Cathedral High School in Boston before earning a degree at Regis College. Marie went on to receive her Masters Degree in Religious Education from Boston College and continued to take professional enrichment courses throughout her career. She served as a Sister of Saint Joseph for 15 years in the Archdiocese of Boston. A teacher with a passion for languages and reading, Mrs. O'Brien taught in several Massachusetts school systems over five decades. Though she retired in 1997 after spending the final 26 years of her career at Middleboro High School, she never stopped teaching. Even in retirement, Mrs. O'Brien was very active in church reform and social justice issues. She also enjoyed spending time at her second home on Old Silver Beach with the love of her life, Stuart.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. O'Brien leaves two sons Daniel, 27, of Raynham and Stuart "Tuck", 29, of Boston. In addition, Mrs. O' Brien leaves her mother Enes V. (Grelotti) Lynch of Stoughton, brother Paul J. Lynch of Arlington, and sisters Kathleen E. Traficanti of Easton, Geraldine A. McCarthy of Braintree, and Maureen T. Sylvia of Fairhaven.
Marie's life was dedicated to others. There was never a time she was not there to lend a helping hand or to offer much needed advice. She touched the life of everyone who knew her.

WALTER KOSINSKI

Walter Kosinski, 74, died at the Brockton Hospital on Monday, April 11 after a period of failing health. Born in Stoughton, he graduated from Stoughton High School, Class of 1948 and Northeastern University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was a resident of Stoughton his entire life until moving to Avon 6 years ago. Mr. Kosinski was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict. He worked as an engineer at General Dynamics in Quincy for many years until becoming a self-employed consultant. He retired several years ago. Mr. Kosinski was a member of the VFW Post 1645 and American Legion Post 89 in Stoughton, as well as the Norfolk Union Lodge in Randolph. He was a member and former Lieutenant Commander of the Sea Cadets at Weymouth Naval Station. In his free time he loved horse and dog racing, gardening, hosting neighborhood parties, cooking and fishing.
Mr. Kosinski is survived by his son, Alan D. Kosinski of Kingston, his daughters, Janis M. Aten of Avon, Sally J. Partington of N. Easton and Kathy L. Nelson of Norton and his siblings, Chester Kosinski of Providence, RI, Nancy Kosinski of NH and Susan Tobin of Carver. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Charissa, Rachael, Tyler and Kelly and his former wife, Carol F. (Phillips) Kosinski. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Arlene Darcy, Robert, Edmund and John Kosinski.

THOMAS M. HUGHES, SR.

Thomas M. Hughes, Sr., 85, died Sunday, April 10 at the Island Terrace Nursing Home in Lakeville after a period of failing health. He was the husband of the late Mary (Barrett) Hughes. Born in Boston, he was raised and educated in Roxbury. He had lived in Brockton since 1958. He was a WWII veteran of the US Marine Corps. Mr. Hughes worked as a bus driver and train operator for the MBTA for over 25 years, retiring in 1982. He was a member of the Carmen's Union Local 589 in Boston. He was a volunteer at the Curtis Hall Senior Center in Jamaica Plain. He enjoyed music and dancing and model railroading.
Mr. Hughes is survived by his children, Thomas M. Hughes Jr. of Middleboro, Paul B. Hughes of Halifax, Mary Nolan of Hingham and Ray Needham of IA. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Jose Medeiros, 71, died Friday night at his home after a long illness. He was the husband of Maria F. (Furtado) Medeiros. Born in Flores, Azores, Portugal, he immigrated to the US in 1974 and settled in Stoughton. He worked as an Assembler and Lead Person for Raytheon in both Norwood and Waltham for many years, retiring 10 years ago. Prior to working at Raytheon, he worked at Cumberland Farms in Canton. He was a member of the San Joao Filharmonic Society in Stoughton. In his free time, he enjoyed gardening, going to the beach, working on cars and helping others.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters, Natercia M. Valadao and Rogeria "Reggie" Medeiros-Kowalczykowski both of Stoughton. He was the brother of Lourdes Araujo of Portugal, Maria J. Edwards and Joaquina Rodrigues both of Stoughton and the late Filomena Medeiros and Antonio Matias. He is also survived by his grandchildren Keith J. Valadao and Stacey M. Valadao.
