GERTRUDE A. STANTON, 74
North Attleboro Volunteer
North Attleboro - Gertrude A. Stanton, 74, of East Washington Street died Friday morning, April 27, 2001 at Life Care Center of Attleboro.

She was the wife of the late Joseph E. Stanton.

Born June 8, 1926 in North Attleboro, she was a daughter of the late Kasmir and Lillian (Funke) Wojciechowski.

Mrs. Stanton was a lifelong resident of North Attleboro. She was a graduate of North Attleboro High School and Bryant College.

Before retiring, she was a bookkeeper at the former F.H. Buffington in Providence for several years. She was also a bookkeeper at the Greenville Animal Hospitalin Greenville, Rhode Island, retiring from there in 1996.

Mrs. Stanton was a Eucharistic Minister and a lector at Saint Mary’s Church in North Attleboro for many years and was also a member of the Saint Mary’s Guild and the Altar Society. She was a member and currently serving as regent of the Benedict Circle Daughters of Isabella and was active and volunteered in the Christian Applacia Project. Mrs. Santon was a recipient of the Fall River Diocesan, Marian Medal, bestowed by Bishop O’Malley in 1996.

She also volunteered at the North Attleboro Senior Center for many years.

Her survivors include a sister, Helen Theriault of North Attleboro and Fort Myers, Florida and a brother, Edward Wojciechowski of Lake Suzy, Florida and Bristol, Rhode Island. She was also survived by 7 nieces, 1 nephew and many great-nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be held from the SPERRY & MCHOUL FUNERAL HOME, 15 Grove St., North Attleboro on Wednesday at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass at Saint Mary’s Church, 14 Park St., North Attleboro at 10 o’clock. Burial will follow in Saint Mary’s Cemetery.

Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday from 4 - 8 p.m. Relatives and friends are kindly invited.

John J. Sweeney, 77
NORTH ATTLEBORO - John J. Sweeney, 77, of No. Attleboro died Tuesday evening, March 20, 2001 at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro. He was the husband of Ruth (Hurley) Sweeney. Born September 8, 1923 in Providence, he was a son of the late James F. and Anne (Horan) Sweeney. Mr. Sweeney was a resident of No. Attleboro since 1995, previously residing in Pawtucket for 10 years. He grew up in Providence and lived in New York state for 30 years.

He was a United States Army veteran of World War II, part of the Americal Division and serving in the Pacific for three years recieving the Philipine Liberation with Bronze Star 1, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon with Bronze Service Arrowhead, the Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal.

He graduated from Providence College in 1950 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Accounting and was an accountant for A & P of Providence and New York for many years. He was a past member of the Knights of Columbus and a one time volunteer for Junior Achievers.

Besides his wife, survivors include; a daughter, Ruth Huyler of No. Attleboro; four sons, John J, Sweeney, Jr. of Geneva, IL, Michael Sweeney of Breckville, OH, Steven Sweeney of Augusta, GA and Paul Sweeney of Malaysia; one brother, James F. Sweeney of Norwalk, CT; three sisters, Agnes Sweeney of Providence, Teresa Murphy of Cranston and Joan Bucklad of Cranston and 9 grandchildren. He was brother of the late Elizabeth Sweeney and Mary Clifford.

A memorial service officiated by Rev. David Costa, pastor of Sacred Heart Church, will be held at Madonna Manor Nursing Home, 85 No. Washington St., No. Attleboro on Saturday, March 31, 2001 at 1: 30 p.m.. Relatives anf friends are kindly invited.

Arrangements are provided by Sperry & McHoul Funeral Home, 15 Grove St., No. Attleboro.

Ruth E. Whitney, 95
PLAINVILLE - Ruth E. Whitney, 95, a longtime Plainville resident, died Wednesday, March 21, 2001 at Caritas Norwood Hospital in Norwood. She was the wife of the late Walter Whitney.

Born May 19, 1905 in Brighton, she was a daughter of the late William J. and Cora A. (Heath) Pineo.

Mrs. Whitney has been a resident of Plainville since 1972. She graduated from Boston Teacher’s College in 1925 and then worked as a teacher in the Boston and Needham school systems for many years. She later worked at Capital Answering Service in Plainville for several years.

Her survivors include a daughter, Janet Buck of Walpole; two grandchildren, Larry J. Buck of Walpole and Jean Mueller of Milan, IL; and two great-grandchildren, Curtiss and Jamie of Milan, IL.

The funeral will be held in SPERRY & McHOUL FUNERAL HOME, 15 Grove Street, North Attleboro on Thursday at 10 a.m. followed by a service at 11 O’clock officiated by Rev. Dr. John Grenfell, pastor of Plainville United Methodist Church. Burial will be in North Purchase Cemetery, Attleboro.

John Paul Yagman, 82
WW2 Army Veteran
RANDOLPH - John P. Yagman, 82, of Randolph, formerly of South Boston died Tuesday, April 10, 2001 at Hollywell Health Care in Randolph.

He was the husband of the late Terese M. (Carney) Yagman.

Born February 3, 1919 in Boston, he was a son of the late John A. and Amelia M. (Shasheeta) Yagman. Mr. Yagman was a resident of South Boston for most of his life and attended Bentley College in Waltham.

He worked as an auditor for Sears Roebuck & Co. for many years before his retirement and was a WW2 veteran serving the U.S. Army. He was a member of B.P.O.E. in Quincy.

His survivors include a step-daughter, Kathleen M. Regan of Prescott Valley, AZ and 3 step-grandchildren.

Private services will be held at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. Arrangements are provided by the SPERRY & McHOUL FUNERAL HOME, North Attleboro.

Edith B. (Smith) Alger, of Hingham, August 15, 2005, Age 98. Widow of H. Stedman Alger. Mother of David B. Alger and his wife Mary Beth of Hingham. Grandmother of Andrew S. and Charlotte L. Alger of Hingham. Aunt of Eleanor Ruth Pierce of Maine. Memorial Visitation will be held in the Magoun-Biggins Funeral Home 135 Union St. ROCKLAND on Sunday, August 21st from 2-4 PM A Memorial Service will be held at 2: 00 PM on Monday, August 22nd in the South Shore Baptist Church, 578 Main St. Hingham, MA 02043.
Mrs. Alger died on Monday at the Colonial Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Weymouth after a period of failing health. She was born in New Jersey daughter of the late Harwood B. and Edith M. (Jacobus) Smith and was raised and educated in Passaic and later Brookline, Mass.
She was a graduate of Bridgewater Normal School (now Bridgewater State College) and earned her degree in elementary education. Edith taught in the Needham Public Schools for over 15 years. A Hingham resident since 1972, she had also summered and spent many years at the family residence at Chappaquiddick Island, Martha’s Vineyard. Burial will be at the families convenience.

Bertha A. (Magoun) Studley, of Carver August 15, 2005 Age 95. Wife of the late David F. Studley. Daughter of the late Fannie W. (Damon) and Charles D. Magoun. Aunt of Otis W. “Duke” Magoun, Jr. of Hanover, Joanne Kalup of Marshfield and Jane Llanes of Pembroke. Also survived by many Grand Nieces and Nephews.
A Funeral Service will be held in the Magoun-Biggins Funeral Home 135 Union St. ROCKLAND on Tuesday, August 23rd at 11: 30 AM. Calling Hours will be held on Monday, August 29th from 6-8 PM.
Bertha died Monday in the Norwell Knoll Nursing Home after a long illness. She was born in Norwell, MA raised and educated in Hanover graduating from Hanover High School in 1929 and a graduate of the Chandler Business School in Boston.
She was a resident of Hanover for over 50 years and a winter resident of Englewood FL since 1972. She had been living in Carver since 1980. Bertha was the personal secretary to the president of Protecto-Wire Co. in Hanover for many years. She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Hanover and organist and charter member of the North River Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, Past President of the Ladies Auxiliary of Hanover American Legion and a member of Alden Kindred of America. Burial will follow the funeral service in Hanover Center Cemetery.

Stella F. (Walker) DeCoste, of Hanover, August 12, 2005 Age 82. Wife of Harold D. DeCoste. Mother of Marie Whelpley and her husband Barry of Carver, David W. DeCoste of Carver, Susan J. Bulawka and her husband David of RI, and John L. “Jack” DeCoste of Hanover. Mother-in-law of the late Debra (Warmington) DeCoste. Sister of Jean Warmington and Betty O’Brien of Rockland as well as the late George, John, Oliver, William and Marion Walker and Dorothy Berry. Also survived by 8 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A Funeral was held from the Magoun-Biggins Funeral Home, 135 Union Street ROCKLAND, on Tuesday, August 17th at 9: 00 AM. Followed by Funeral Mass in St. Mary of the Sacred Heart Church in Hanover at 10: 00 AM. Calling Hours were on Monday, August 16th from 5-8 PM. Donations may be made to the Northeast Animal Shelter, 204 Highland Ave. Salem, MA 01970.
Stella died at the South Sore Hospital after a period of failing health. She was born in Milton daughter of the late John and Freda (Kelble) Walker and was raised and educated there. She was a 1941 graduate of Milton High School. Mrs. DeCoste had formerly been employed as a secretary at the Walter Baker Chocolate Co. in Dorchester Lower Mills and had served in the same capacity during World War II at the Hingham Shipyard for Bethlehem Steel and at the Codman Cooperative Bank.
She later served as an assembler at Electro-Signal Labs in Rockland for several years before retiring in 1979. Stella was an active member for many years on the Hanover Democratic Polling Committee and was an avid lifelong fan of the World Champion Boston Red Sox. Burial followed the Funeral Mass in Hanover Center Cemetery in Hanover.

Dorothy H. (Harlow) Stewart, of Hanover, August 8, 2005 Age 86. Wife of the late Robert J. Stewart. Mother of William E. Stewart and his wife Cathy of Rockland, Robert W. Stewart and his wife Roberta of Abington, and John H. Stewart of Halifax. Sister of the late William B. Harlow and Wayne Harlow. Also survived by 10 Grandchildren, 4 Great-Grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours were held in the Magoun-Biggins Funeral Home 135 Union St. ROCKLAND on Wednesday, August 10th from 5-8 PM. A Funeral Service was held on Thursday at 11: 30 AM in St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Hanover. Donations may be made to the Hospice of the South Shore 100 Bay State Rd Braintree MA 02184.
Dorothy died on Monday at the South Shore Rehabilitation and Skilled Care Center in Rockland after a period of failing health. She was raised and educated in Rockland and was a graduate of Rockland High School. She later earned her college degree in teaching from Wheelock College in Boston. Dorothy worked as a first grade teacher at the Salmond School in Hanover for 30 years retiring 21 years ago.
She was an active participant at St. Andrews Church in Hanover where she was a member of the Altar Guild. Dorothy loved to read, garden and sew. Burial followed the Funeral Service in Hanover Center Cemetery.

Alfonso L. "Al" Maiorano, of Hanson, July 30, 2005 Age 78. Husband of Ruth L. (Barker) Maiorano. Father of Alan L. Maiorano of Plympton and Stephen J. Maiorano of E. Taunton. Brother of Josephine Poole of FL., Ann Bates of Quincy and Margaret "Dolly" Carini of Abington. Grandfather of Jason, Jarrod and Jamison Maiorano. Great Grandfather of Madison, Morgan and Anthony Maiorano.
A Funeral was held from the Magoun-Biggins Funeral Home 135 Union St. ROCKLAND on Wednesday, August 3rd at 9: 00 AM. A Funeral Mass followed in St. Joseph the Worker Church in Hanson at 10: 00 AM. Calling hours were on Tuesday, August 2nd from 6-9 PM.
Mr. Maiorano died on Saturday in the South Shore Hospital in Weymouth after a period of failing health. He was born in Brockton son of Italian immigrant parents Alfonso and Josephine (Alvino) Maiorano and was raised and educated in Rockland.
He was a World War II veteran of the United States Navy having served aboard the USS Nicholas Gilman as an armed guard and a gunner. After his discharge from the Navy, Al enrolled in the School of Practical Arts in Boston studying Sign Painting and Art. He would later use those skills in becoming a champion bird carver.
Following in his fathers occupation he had been the proprietor of Al and Chet's Barber Shop in Rockland for many years and later he owned and operated the Hanson Barber Shop for many years until his retirement nearly fifteen years ago. In his retirement he occasionally assisted at Don's Barber Shop in Hanson.
Mr. Maiorano was a member of the U.S. Armed Guard Veteran's Association, the disabled American Veteran's and the Whitman Post of the VFW. Burial followed the Funeral Mass in Blue Hill Cemetery in Braintree.

Madeline N. Vargus, of Hanover, July 22, 2005 Age 89. Wife of Russell Vargus. Mother of Frances Patrick of WI, Cynthia Travers of ME, Joyce Larson of PA, and William Vargus of Abington. Sister of Franklin O. Nichols of Hanover, Shirley Mckenna of Rockland, and Lawrence Nichols of Duxbury. Also survived by 4 Grandchildren, 5 Great-Grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Madeline’s life was celebrated on Wednesday July 27 at 11 : 00 AM in the First Baptist Church in Hanover. Calling hours in the Magoun-Biggins Funeral Home 135 Union St. ROCKLAND were on Wednesday July 27 at 10: 00 AM. Donations may be made to the First Baptist Church in Hanover Webster St.
Madeline went home to be with our Lord and Savior on Friday after a period of failing health. She was born in Hanover daughter of the late Clarence and Lena Nichols. Madeline was married for over sixty years to Russell H. Vargus. Madeline and Russell loved to spend time traveling together.
Mrs. Vargus had lived her entire life in the Town of Hanover. Mrs. Vargus worked as a cook at Hanover High School before taking over as Cafeteria Manager for the Hanover Public School System. Madeline was also proud to call herself a die hard Red Sox fan. She was a member of the Willing Workers Club at the First Baptist Church in Hanover. Rev. John P. Ross officiated at the service and after cremation, burial will be in the Hanover Center Cemetery.

John M. Lovell, of Rockland July 18, 2005 Age 90. Husband of the late Frances (Lindberg) Lovell. Brother of Kenneth Lovell of Ohio, Esther Gleason of FL and the late Ruth Currie, Miriam Clark and Irving, Arthur, Alfred, and Edwin Lovell. Also survived by many Nieces and Nephews.
Calling Hours in the Magoun-Biggins Funeral Home 135 Union St. ROCKLAND on Friday, July 22nd from 4-7 PM. A Graveside service will be held in the Blue Hill Cemetery on Saturday, July 23rd at 11: 00 AM.
John died Monday in the Pope Nursing Home in Weymouth after a long illness. He was born in Hanover MA, son of the late Clara M. (Merrill) and Ralph S. Lovell. Mr. Lovell was raised and educated in Hanover and attended Alfred University in NY and was an iron worker with the Local #7 for over 30 years. He was a Navy Sea Bea, , member of the Rockland VFW.

Rocco Tanzi, of Rockland, July 17, 2005 Age 84. Husband of Carmella (Rose) Tanzi. Brother of John Tanzi of Whitman, Ralph Tanzi RFD Chief Ret. Of Rockland, Asunta L."Sundy" Cassani of Rockland, and the late Emillo G. Tanzi. Also survived by many Nieces, Nephews, Grand Nieces and Nephews.
A Funeral was held from the Magoun-Biggins Funeral Home, 135 Union St. ROCKLAND on Wednesday, July 20th at 10: 15 AM. A Funeral Mass followed in Holy Family Church at 11: 00 AM. Calling hours were held on Tuesday, July 19th from 4-8 PM. Donations may be made to the American Diabetes Assoc. PO Box 1131 Fairfax, VA 22038-1131.
Rocco died Sunday after being stricken ill at home. Mr. Tanzi was born in Italy and came to the United States in his late teens. He was educated in Italy and lived the rest of his life in Rockland.
All his working years were spent as a landscaper, working as a foreman for Wyman’s Nursery in Hanson and Old Colony Landscape in Weymouth. Rocco was a WWII Army Veteran serving in the Pacific. Burial followed the Mass in Holy Family Cemetery in Rockland.
