Edward S. 'Stephen' Sweeney Jr., 48
Osterville - Edward S. "Stephen" Sweeney Jr., 48, a resident of Osterville and Paris, Texas , died July 28, 2002, at his home from complications of cancer.
He was the husband of Diane (DeFanti) Sweeney of Osterville and Paris, Tex.
Mr. Sweeney was born and educated in Newton-Wellesley and attended one year of college. Over the years, he lived in Effingham Falls, N.H.; Melbourne, Fla.; Paris, Tex.; and, most recently, Osterville.
He had many talents and his varied career included sales, owning a nursery, owning a car repair business and managing a marine restoration company in Melbourne, Fla.
Besides his wife, survivors include his parents, Edward S. Sweeney and Frances (Gregware) Sweeney of Palm Bay, Fla.; a son, Brian S. Sweeney of Paris, Texas ; a daughter, Whitney A. Sweeney of Paris, Texas ; two sisters, Janice S. Youlden of Osterville and Lynda M. Hunt of Rindge, N.H.; and many nieces and nephews.
A service of remembrance was held at the Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home in Burial followed in Mosswood Cemetery
in Cotuit.

Johanna Rose Andrews, 75
Hyannis - Johanna Rose (Roderick) Andrews, 75, a resident of Hyannis, died Aug. 9, 2002, at Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care Pavilion.
She was the wife of Roy J. Andrews Sr., who died in 1985.
Mrs. Andrews was born in Barnstable and raised and educated in Marstons Mills.
She was a domestic housekeeper and worked as a cook for the Barnstable school system before becoming a homemaker and raising her family, including a granddaughter. She loved to cook, knit, crochet, work puzzles and especially loved to shop. She was a communicant of St. Francis Xavier Church in Hyannis.
Surviving are four daughters, Anne Monteiro of New Bedford and Gail Whelden, Mary Ann Lanzo and Joan M. Andrews, all of Hyannis; a son, Roy J. Andrews of Hyannis; a brother, Manuel J. Roderick Jr. of Marstons Mills; five sisters, Mabel Galvin and Beatrice Monteiro, both of Hyannis, Mary Moore of Boston, Louisa DePina of Los Angeles, and Barbara Pina of Marstons Mills; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass was celebrted in St. Francis Xavier Church in Hyannis. Burial was in St. Francis Cemetery
in Centerville.
Barbara Elizebeth Cook, 90
Hyannis - Barbara Elizebeth (Davis) Cook, 90, a resident of Hyannis, died Aug. 4, 2002, after a brief stay at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.
She was the wife of William Frederick Cook, who died in 1977. They had been married since 1934.
Born in Holyoke, she soon moved to Uxbridge. At the age of 13, she and her parents moved to the Cape.
After she and her husband-to-be attended Barnstable High School, Mrs. Cook attended Possinissen College, studying physical education. She then taught at Perkins School for the Blind.
In 1939, Mr. and Mrs. Cook moved to Hyannis, where she lived until her death. She worked at a variety of jobs during their marriage, including at Lorraine's Toy Store, Barnstable National Bank and the Barnstable County Tax office, where she retired.
She was very active in Cub Scouts.
Mrs. Cook was a member of the Federated Church for more than 50 years and was active in making crafts for the Christmas Commons and Sunday crafts sales.
She also did voluntary work in the thrift shop and enjoyed going to Pairs for Pals at the church.
Her favorite pastime was going to Sandy Neck, Nauset or Newcombs Hollow on picnics and working on multiple crafts.
Survivors include two children, W. Briar Cook and Jan R. Cook; a brother, Eugene Davis of Foxboro; two granddaughters; a grandson; three great-grandchildren; a great-great granddaughter; and several nieces.
She was also the mother of Arthur E. Cook, who died in 1968.
A graveside service was held in Mosswood Cemetery
in Cotuit.

Pota Diavatinou, 86
Centerville - Pota (Koutris) Diavatinou, 86, a resident of Centerville and formerly of Boston, died Aug. 8, 2002, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.
Born in Sparta, Greece, she came to Boston in the early 1950s. She worked as a seamstress.
In Boston, she was an active member of St. John the Baptist Greek Church. She moved to Centerville in 1984 and was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Centerville.
Survivors include two daughters, Chrisanthie Tzanoudakis of Centerville and Marica Diavatinou of Atlanta, Ga.; three sisters, Theodora Patsalos of New Jersey, Katina Mousis of Athens, Greece, and Anastasia Mikos of Sparta, Greece; two brothers, Konstantinos Koutris of Sparta, Greece, and George Koutris of Boston; a grandson; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral was held at St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Centerville, with burial in Beechwood Cemetery
in that village.

Gail Kendrick, 59
Hyannis - Gail Kendrick, 59, a resident of Hyannis, died June 29 at home with her family after years of breast cancer.
Born in Springfield, she was raised from age 2 at the Kendrick homestead on Prospect Street, in her parents' hometown, and educated in the Hinsdale, N.H., schools.
In 1959, she moved to Meridian, Conn., where she spent many years, later moving to Provincetown with her daughters, where she lived for more than 20 years, near her beloved ocean. She relocated to Hyannis in 1999.
She worked for many years as night manager at local hotels. She also designed handmade jewelry for more than six years on Whalers Wharf at The Handcrafter. Later, she created and sold her own jewelry. She was a meticulous seamstress, making and creating huge wardrobes of tiny clothes for "Dawn Dolls." She loved to tell long, made-up stories for her children. Also a majorette in high school, she was an accomplished dancer and beautiful figure skater. Through her dancing, she once got to meet Fred Astaire, who handed her the trophy she won at a dance contest in Boston.
She and Donald W. Foss Jr. of Hyannis, companion and caregiver, were joined together, in a beautiful ceremony on the beach, in 1996. Besides Mr. Foss, survivors include three daughters, Debbie Zabel of Meridian, Conn., Lee Hudson of Hancock, Maine, and Aurelia Hamel of Nantucket; three brothers, Greg Kendrick of Bakersfield, Calif., Jeff Kendrick of Putney, Vt., and Dean Kendrick of Hinsdale, N.H.; two sisters, Lisa Kendrick of Oakley, Calif., and Heidi Kendrick of Marlboro, Vt.; 10 grandchildren; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service in celebration of her life was held at the Pine Grove Cemetery
in Hinsdale, N.H., at the Kendrick Family plot.

This fund is dedicated solely to sending deserving, disadvantaged children from the Hinsdale Elementary and Marlboro Elementary schools to summer camp for two weeks.
Florence Lovejoy, 87
Barnstable - Florence (Seaberg) Lovejoy, 87, a resident of Barnstable, died Aug. 3, 2002, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.
She was the wife of the late William P. Lovejoy.
Mrs. Lovejoy was born, raised and educated in Brockton, where she graduated from high school and attended business school.
She moved to Barnstable, where she lived for more than 60 years.
Mrs. Lovejoy worked at the Barnstable Post Office and at the Barnstable Court House, retiring in the late 1960s.
She was an avid gardener and a member of the Quilters Club. She was active in the Unitarian Church of Barnstable and was a former member of its choir.
A gracious hostess, she enjoyed serving Swedish food to family and friends.
Survivors include two stepsons, Bruce R. Lovejoy of Fort Myers, Fla., and Ralph L. Lovejoy of Yarmouthport; eight stepgrandchildren; nine stepgreat-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was also the stepmother of the late W. Alan Lovejoy.
A graveside service was held at Lothrop Hill Cemetery
in Barnstable, followed by a memorial service at the Unitarian Church of Barnstable.

Mildred I. Mason, 87
Centerville - Mildred I. (Ross) Mason, 87, a resident of Centerville, died Aug. 10, 2002, at Harbor Point Assisted Living in Centerville.
She was the wife of the late Vincent D. Mason.
Mrs. Mason was born in Northwood, N.H. She worked for 55 years as a watchmaker for the Waltham Watch factory, and resided in Waltham for more than 70 years prior to moving to Centerville.
Surviving are two brothers, Richard Ross of Brewster and William Ross of Vancouver, Wash.; a sister, Elizabeth Bonica of Waltham; and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
A funeral was held in the Joyce Funeral Home in Waltham, with burial in Mt. Feake Cemetery
there.

Michael Pinto, 47
Worcester - Michael Pinto, 47, a former Hyannis resident, died Aug. 8, 2002, in UMass Memorial Healthcare Center after becoming ill at his home.
Mr. Pinto was born in Worcester, graduated from Barnstable High School, and attended Hyannis Culinary Arts School. He had lived on Cape Cod for 35 years prior to moving to Worcester recently.
Mr. Pinto was restaurant manager and executive chef at Baxter's Restaurant in Hyannis for many years. He had also been a chef at the former El Morocco Restaurant in Worcester. He received numerous awards for his cooking abilities in many local competitions and festivals on Cape Cod. He also enjoyed traveling.
Surviving are his mother, Ida E. (Ghiz) Pinto of Worcester; two sons, Dax M. Pinto-Fountain of Hyannis and Seneca L. Pinto-Fountain of Methuen; two daughters, Venessa L. Pinto-Fountain and Regine C. Pinto-Fountain, both of Methuen; three brothers, John S., Richard S. and Nicholas O. Pinto, all of Worcester; three sisters, Lucy V. Wright and Joanne Viner-Walker, both of Worcester, and Theresa J. Olson of Spencer; several nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and grand-nephews; and his former wife, Cindi (Elander) Pinto-Fountain.
A funeral was held in the Morris Funeral Home in South Yarmouth, and a Mass was celebrated in the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel-St. Ann in Worcester, with burial in Hope Cemetery
there.
Judith Ann Roberts, 70
Glen, N.H. - Judith Ann Roberts, 70, who was born in South Yarmouth, died Aug. 2, 2002, at Memorial Hospital in North Conway following a brief illness.
She was the wife of Lynn R. Roberts.
Mrs. Roberts was born in South Yarmouth and had lived in the Mount Washington Valley region for more than 40 years.
She had been a real estate broker for more than 25 years and for the last eight years had worked in a local bank.
Mrs. Roberts was an avid golfer and past member of Wentworth Hall Golf Club and of the North Conway Country Club. She enjoyed her family, especially watching her children and grandchildren play sports. She enjoyed her friends, and doing business in a professional manner.
Surviving besides her husband are three sons, Michael K. Gile of Dover, N.H., Matthew H. Gile of Bartlett, N.H., and Peter A. Gile of Wakefield; a daughter, Jean-Marie Day of Center Conway, N.H.; a brother, Peter Thurston of Phoenix, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held in Glen Cemetery.
