Claire Marchant

Hyannis - Claire (Tavernier) Marchant, a longtime Cape resident, died May 21, 2002, at the Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care Community - Pavilion in Hyannis, where she lived for the past 14 years.
Mrs. Marchant was born, raised and educated in Southbridge. She moved to Centerville in the late 1930s and lived in Hyannis for approximately 50 years.
She was an avid Red Sox fan and bingo player.
Survivors include three sons, Gerard Tavernier of Florida, Donald R. Cabral of Hyannis and George Cabral of Dennis; three daughters, Janet Tiexeira, Joyce Dias and Mary Hendricks, all of Mashpee; a brother, Lawrence Tavernier of Southbridge; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held at the John-Lawrence Funeral Home in Marstons Mills.
Memorial donations may be made to the Pavilion Resident Council Fund, 876 Falmouth Road, Hyannis, MA 02601.

James S. Owens, 80

Centerville - James S. Owens, 80, a resident of Centerville, died May 22, 2002, at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston following a brief illness.
He was the husband of Barbara (Lewis) Owens for 52 years.
Mr. Owens was born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y. He attended the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., and served in the Navy during World War II.
He resided in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., for 39 years and served as a town councilman for Poughkeepsie in the early 1970s. He was an insurance agent until his retirement at age 65. He moved to Cape Cod in 1997.
Surviving besides his wife are two daughters, Nancy J. Galioto of Centerville and Susan H. Rizzo of Hyannis; two sons, James D. Owens of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Peter T. Owens of Tarrytown, N.Y.; a sister, Jane Melly of White Plains, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral was held at Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home in Hyannis, with burial following at Beechwood Cemetery in Cotuit.
Memorial donations may be made to C-O-M-M Volunteers, Inc., 1875 Falmouth Road, Centerville, MA 02631.

Joseph Patrick 'Red' Ryan, 76

Colorado Springs, Colo. - Joseph Patrick "Red" Ryan, 76, a former longtime Hyannis resident, died May 18, 2002, after complications from back surgery.
He was the husband of Shirley Ryan.
Born and raised in Hopkinton, Mr. Ryan graduated from Hopkinton High School in 1943 and from the University of Tampa in 1952. He played varsity football and baseball while at Tampa. He earned a master's degree in education from Worcester State College in 1955.
He was a Navy veteran, serving during World War II.
Mr. Ryan played minor league baseball for three years with the Brooklyn Dodgers organization.
He taught and coached in the Armed Forces school system in both France and Germany.
He was the athletic director at Otis Air Force Base and then Massachusetts Maritime Academy until he retired in 1989.
While on the Cape, he was active in officiating football, basketball and baseball at both the high school and collegiate levels.
He umpired Cape League baseball for many years and was active in Kennedy Youth Hockey and Cape Cod CYO activities.
He was a lifelong handball and squash player.
Upon retirement, he and his wife moved to Colorado Springs from Hyannis in 1989. He stayed busy with the U.S. Olympic Committee and was active with the Elks, Knights of Columbus and Veterans of Foreign Wars organizations in both Massachusetts and Colorado. He had a lifelong involvement with Catholic charitable organizations. His dog Bama was always by his side.
Besides his wife, survivors include two sons, Michael Ryan of Danville, Calif., and Patrick Ryan of Oak Park, Ill.; a daughter, Betsy Rosenthal of Littleton, Colo.; and four grandchildren.
A funeral was held at St. Joseph's Church in Colorado Springs. Burial will take place on Cape Cod at later date.

Alexander C. Todd Jr., 76

South Yarmouth - Alexander C. Todd Jr., 76, died May 20, 2002, at Hospice House in Barnstable after a lengthy illness.
He was the husband of Audrey S. Todd for 53 years.
Mr. Todd was born in Hyannis. He attended Yarmouth High School and graduated from New Hampton Prep School in New Hampton, N.H.
After graduation, he entered the Navy in 1943 and was discharged in 1946. He lived in Maine for about a year and worked as a heavy equipment operator. He came back to the Cape and started his own contracting business called A.C. Todd Jr. Contractor. He retired in 1987.
He had many hobbies including woodworking, camping, fishing, reading, lecturing on old local post card scenes that he had in his collection. He was a member of the Post Card Club and the Historical Society of Old Yarmouth. He also served as a call fireman for more than 20 years for the Yarmouth Fire Department.
Besides his wife, survivors include two daughters, Joyce T. Holway and Janice T. Donovan, both of South Yarmouth; four grandchildren; a nephew; and several cousins.
A memorial service was held at the United Methodist Church of South Yarmouth.

William Baker, 81

Hyannis - William Baker, 81, a resident of Wareham and formerly of Hyannis, died May 27, 2002, at Millbrook Rehabilitation & Nursing Center in Wareham.
Born, raised and educated in Clayton, Ala., he moved to Cape Cod in 1938.
Mr. Baker entered the Army during World War II, serving with the Battery B 599th Field Artillery Battalion in the European theater. Among the many medals he was awarded were two Bronze Stars.
After the war, he worked at Martin's Bakery in Hyannis for 20 years. He then worked as a steward at Dunfey's Hotel in Hyannis for 15 years, retiring in 1992.
Survivors include two sisters, Myrtle Walker of Birmingham, Ala., and Grace Allen of Los Angeles; and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service with military honors was held at Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.

Marjorie S. Dow, 86

Centerville - Marjorie S. (Stone) Dow, 86, a resident of Centerville, died May 26, 2002, at the Hospice House in Barnstable.
She was the wife of the late Norman M. Dow. They were married for 63 years.
Mrs. Dow was born, raised and educated in Newton, and was a 1933 graduate of Newton High School.
She worked for several years for John Hancock Insurance Co. in Boston before leaving to become a homemaker and raise her children.
She lived in the Waban section of Newton and was active with the Union Church in Waban.
A summer resident of Pocasset since 1923, she and her husband moved to Centerville in 1975.
Mrs. Dow was a member of the West Parish Congregational Church in West Barnstable and was involved with the "Kiddie Korner" program there.
She was also active in the ladies bowling league in Falmouth for more than 25 years and active in the Osterville Garden Club.
Survivors include five sons, Bruce M. Dow of San Diego, David S. Dow of Hampton, N.H., William W. Dow of Bradford, Charles B. Dow of South Orleans and Richard M. Dow of Pocasset; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at the West Parish Congregational Church.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Cape Cod, 270 Communication Way, Hyannis, MA 02601; to the West Parish Congregational Church, Route 149, West Barnstable, MA 02668; or to the charity of one's choice.

Carolyn Eiler, 59

Satellite Beach, Fla. - Carolyn F. Eiler, 59, of Satellite Beach, and 25-year Centerville resident, died May 7, 2002.
She was the wife of Jerry Eiler for 37 years.
She was born in Cohoes, N.Y., and had lived in Florida for the last 18 years.
Besides her husband, survivors include two daughters, Renee C. Lundy and Lynette R. Parker; a son, Marc C. Eiler; a sister, Kathleen-Greer; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service was held in Satellite Beach.
Memorial donations may be made to Trinity Presbyterian Church, 638 South Patrick Drive, Satellite Beach, FL. 32937, to go to a local orphanage in an endowment fund.

Francis Fitzgerald, 92

Centerville - Francis Fitzgerald, 92, a resident of Centerville, died May 30, 2002, at the Greenery Skilled Nursing Center in Hyannis after a long illness.
He was the husband of Juliet (Varone) Fitzgerald, who died in 1995.
Mr. Fitzgerald was born in Dorchester and later moved to Milton. During World War II, he enlisted in the Navy and served with the Navy Seabees in the Aleutians and on Guam.
After the war, Mr. Fitzgerald worked at the Welsbach Street Gas Lighting Co., which was founded by his grandfather in the late 1890s in Philadelphia. Later, the company expanded and located in Boston. A family-operated company for four generations, it had a contract with the city of Boston for lighting and maintaining the gas lamps in and around Boston. Many of the gas lamps exist to this day, especially in the Beacon Hill section of Boston and on Nantucket.
Mr. Fitzgerald moved to Chatham and was involved in building homes in that area. He later moved to Centerville, where he retired.
He loved all sports, was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening, woodworking and boating.
Survivors include a sister, Claire Fitzgerald of Hyannis; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of Victory Church in Centerville.
