Bessie Lopez, 83

Hyannis - Bessie "Betty" (Cosgrove) Lopez, 83, died March 16, 2001, at Hospice House in Barnstable.
She was the wife of the late Emmett Lopez.
Born and raised in Brockton, she worked at Cape Cod Hospital for more than 30 years.
She is survived by two daughters, Janet Inez McPherson of Yarmouth and Dorothy E. Harper of Mashpee; a sister, Dorothy Southworth of Old Town, Maine; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was also the mother of the late Gary Lopez.
Funeral services were private.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Cape Cod, 923 Main St., Yarmouthport, MA 02675; or the American Cancer Society, 1115 Chestnut St., Brockton, MA 02401.

Ruth Estelle Nurse

Hyannis - Ruth Estelle Nurse, a resident of Hyannis, died March 15, 2001, at Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care Community - Pavilion.
Mrs. Nurse was born, raised and educated in Fairhaven. She moved to Cape Cod in 1974, where she was employed at the Colonial Candle Factory in Hyannis until her retirement.
She was a member of the Christ Chapel of Centerville and in the church choir.
She is survived by four brothers, Richard Daffinee of Brewster, Donald Daffinee of San Antonio, Tex., Albert Daffinee of Las Vegas, Nev., and Robert Daffinee of Acushnet; and a sister, Martha Ruest of Wareham.
Burial was private.
Memorial donations may be made to Intouch Ministries, P.O. Box 7900, Atlanta, GA 30357.

Joseph Wright, 91

Hyannis - Joseph Wright, 91, died March 19, 2001, at the Bay Path at Duxbury Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Duxbury after a brief illness.
He was the husband of the late Margaret M. (Wright) Wright.
Born in Motherwell, Scotland, he moved to this country in 1914 and settled in Brookline.
Mr. Wright worked for the Hingham and Quincy Shipyards. In 1930, he graduated from the former Bentley School of Business.
Mr. Wright retired after working for more than 25 years in the Wheelock College maintenance department. He moved to the Cape in 1970.
He was a member of the Hyannis Baptist Church, the Highland Light Society and the British American Club.
Mr. Wright is survived by a son, Thomas L. Wright of Marshfield; a daughter, Floris E. Rogers of Hyannis; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was also the father of the late Joseph S. Wright.
A memorial service was held in the First Baptist Church of Hyannis. Burial was private.
Memorial donations may be made to the Bay Path at Duxbury Recreation Department, 308 Kingstown Way, Duxbury, MA 02332.

Earle A. Bickford, 79

Sandwich - Earle A. Bickford, 79, a resident of Sandwich, died March 22, 2001, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.
He was the husband of Mildred (Vieira) Bickford, who died in December.
Mr. Bickford was born and educated in Taunton.
He was an Air Force veteran and served in World War II and the Korean War. He moved to Cape Cod in 1963 and lived in Osterville for many years before moving to Sandwich. He was a well-known real estate broker for more than 30 years. He was a member of the King David Lodge AF&AM of Taunton and VFW Post 02758. He was an avid sports fan.
He is survived by a son, David Bickford of South Yarmouth; two daughters, Lynne Temple of South Sandwich and Donna Bickford of Mashpee; two sisters, June Bell of Taunton and Norma Cottrell of North Dighton; four grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held at the Doane, Beal and Ames Funeral Home in Hyannis. Burial followed in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.

Kenneth E. DeYoung, 48

Centerville - Kenneth E. DeYoung, 48, died March 26, 2001, at his home.
He was the husband of Teresa (Marin) DeYoung.
Born in Weymouth and raised in Norwell, Mr. DeYoung was a graduate of South Shore Vocational School in Rockland.
A resident of Valatie, N.Y., for 20 years, Mr. DeYoung worked as the supervisor of carpentry at Rensselaer Polytechnical Institute in Troy, N.Y., for 18 years.
He moved to Centerville in 1997 and worked as a carpenter at Cape Cod Community College in West Barnstable.
He enjoyed fishing, boating, woodworking and motorcycles.
Besides his wife, Mr. DeYoung is survived by four children, Abigayle DeYoung, Nathaniel DeYoung, Tristan DeYoung and Trevor DeYoung; his mother, Betty (Jacobson) DeYoung of Popponesset; a sister, Susan Mazzone of Mashpee; nine cousins; and many friends. He was also the father of the late Kenneth DeYoung.
Funeral services were held in the John-Lawrence Funeral Home at Marstons Mills. Burial was private.
Memorial donations may be made to the educational fund for Mr. DeYoung's children c/o Teresa DeYoung, Box 196, Rensselaerville, NY 12147.

Thomas 'Ray' G. Leary II, 47

Hyannis - Thomas "Ray" G. Leary II, 47, a resident of Hyannis, died unexpectedly March 27, 2001, at Cape Cod Hospital after being ill at home.
He was the fiancee of Susan Oliver of Hyannis. Formerly, he was the husband of Deirdre (Dwyer) Leary, who died in 1995.
Born in Newport, R.I., Mr. Leary was raised and educated in Hyannis, graduating from Barnstable High School in 1971.
He worked with Eagle Well Drilling of Hyannis. An avid golfer and a sports fan, he also enjoyed dancing, playing pool and being with friends and family.
Besides his fiancee, he is survived by a daughter, Catherine Leary of Hyannis; six brothers, Michael Leary of Hyannis, Benjamin and Kenneth Raposa of Camdon, S.C., "Jeff" R. Medeiros of Cotuit, Bryan Medeiros of Hyannis and Michael Medeiros of Cotuit; seven sisters, Colleen Leary of Orlando, Fla., Lisa Roberts of Yarmouth, Sharon Mayo of Wareham, Pam Iliffe of Cotuit, Toni Craig of Marstons Mills, and Vicki Veara and Deborah Medeiros, both of Hyannis; his father, Thomas G. Leary of Mashpee; and several nieces and nephews.
A service was held at the Doane, Beal and Ames Funeral Home in Hyannis. Burial was private.
Memorial donations may be made to the Catherine J. Leary Scholarship Fund to be set up by the Cape Cod Bank and Trust Co.'s Airport Rotary branch in Hyannis.

Virginia K. Plifka, 67

Chicopee - Virginia K. (Ciszek) Plifka, 67, a resident of Chicopee and Centerville, died March 26, 2001, at the Mercy Hospital in Springfield.
She was the wife of William P. Plifka for 42 years.
Born in Chicopee, Mrs. Plifka was a lifelong resident. She was a 15-year teacher's aide in the Chicopee School System until retiring in 1996.
She was a communicant of the Basilica of St. Stanislaus, Bishop and Martyr and a member of its Rosary Society.
Surviving besides her husband are two sons, Stephen Plifka of Springfield and Paul Plifka of Worcester; a daughter, Kathryn Anischik of Tolland, Conn.; three sisters, Louise Dyjak of the Indian Orchard section of Springfield, Stella Boleski and Barbara Jendrysik, both of Chicopee; and five grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Stanislaus Basilica in Chicopee, with burial following in the parish cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Sr. Caritas Center for Oncology, c/o Barbara Watson, 271 Carew St., P.O. Box 9012, Springfield, MA 01102-9012.

P. Langdon Richards, 85

Cummaquid - P. Langdon Richards, 85, a Cape resident since 1974, died March 29, 2001, at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis, after a short illness.
He was the husband of Edith L. (Lamica) Richards and of Helen (Codet) Richards, who died in 1994.
Born, raised and educated in Northampton, Mr. Langdon later majored in chemistry and physics at the University of Massachusetts, graduating in 1937.
After graduation, Mr. Richards began working at the company now known as Exxon Mobil Corp., where he spent 10 years on various refining and petrochemical research projects and was issued several patents in those fields. In 1948 he transferred to Exxon Chemical Corp., where he worked in the technical marketing division. Mr. Richards traveled extensively in Europe and Latin America in 1955, setting up chemical operations for Exxon. In 1965, he was elected vice president and director of Esso Chemical U.S.A. He retired from that position in 1971 and subsequently consulted in the petrochemical industry.
Mr. Richards was a member of the American Chemical Society for more than 50 years. His other memberships included the Chemical Marketing Research Association, the Chemist Club, Sales Executive Club and the New York Athletic Club.
He lived for many years in Westport, Conn., where he was active in the Greens Farms Congregational Church, the United Way, the Cub Scouts, the Patterson Country Club, the Rotary Club and town government.
In 1974, Mr. Richards moved to Cummaquid. In 1995, he married his second wife, who had been a childhood schoolmate. He served two years as president of the Cummaquid Heights Association and was a member of the Cummaquid Golf Club, the Osterville Mens Club, the Cape Cod Men's Club, and the Beach Club and was a founding member of the Cape Cod Exxon Annuitants Club.
He enjoyed classical music, golf, gardening, bridge and furniture restoration.
Besides his wife, Mr. Richards is survived by three sons, John L. Richards of New York City, Jeffrey C. Richards of Ottawa, and Bruce T. Richards of Barnstable and Greenwich, Conn.; one sister, Priscilla Griffith of Clearwater, Fla.; six grandchildren; and one niece and two nephews.
A memorial service was held at the Federated Church of Hyannis on Main Street. Burial services were private.
