C. Lorraine Merritt

Hyannis - C. Lorraine Merritt of Hyannis died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001 at Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care Community - Pavilion after an illness.
She was the wife of Norman R. Merritt.
Mrs. Merritt was born in Waltham and raised in Watertown. She married in 1954 and moved to Cape Cod in 1955.
She worked for New England Telephone Co. for more than 25 years. Before and after her retirement, Mrs. Merritt worked for the Cape Cod Times in Hyannis. She loved Sandy Neck and she and her husband camped there in their motor home on many weekends.
Surviving besides her husband are a daughter, Norma J. Kelley of Hyannis; a son, William Merritt of Natick; and several nieces and nephews. She was also the mother of the late Stephen J. Merritt.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Francis Xavier Church, South Street, Hyannis.

Ruth Pierce, 92

Osterville - A memorial service for long-time Osterville resident Ruth Pierce, 92, will be held at 2 p.m. Feb. 28 in Osterville Baptist Church. A fellowship time will follow in the church hall. Pierce died Jan. 23.

James G. Spellissy, 74

Framingham - James G. Spellissy, 74, a resident of Framingham and West Hyannis, died Feb. 10, 2001, at the Metro West Medical Center in Natick.
He was the husband of Alice D. (O'Malley) Spellissy for more than 49 years.
Born in Marlborough, Mr. Spellissy resided in Framingham for 27 years. He was a graduate of Holy Cross College and did graduate work at Boston College and Babson College. During World War II, he served in the Army.
Mr. Spellissy began his business career as a stockbroker and registered representative of the New York Stock Exchange. He later opened the First Regional Group and Pension Office in Boston, where he developed business accounts and health and welfare funds throughout New England.
He expanded into agency management and became a chartered life underwriter and life insurance consultant. He was a co-founder and general partner of Financial Benefit Consultants of Framingham and worked for the Massachusetts Mutual Life Co. in Boston and Worcester.
Mr. Spellissy was a member of the Holy Cross Presidents Council, Planning Board and Estate Planning Council and was director of the Holy Cross General Alumni Association. He was on the board of directors for Fishermen's Village in West Hyannis.
In his leisure time, he enjoyed oil painting.
Surviving besides his wife are a daughter, Jane E. Spellissy of Boston; a son, James M. Spellissy of Baltimore, Md.; a brother, George Spellissy of Atlanta, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.

Marion P. Stone, 75

Centerville - Marion P. (Palermo) Stone, 75, a Centerville resident formerly of Vineyard Haven, died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001 at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston after a long illness.
She was the wife of Roger B. Stone for 53 years.
Born in Middleton, Mrs. Stone grew up in Saugus, Revere and the Lynn area. She was married in 1947. The Stones lived in Winthrop and Peabody and raised their three sons in Vineyard Haven. Later, they moved to Honolulu, Hilton Head, S.C., and Ozark, Ala., before moving to Centerville in 1984.
Mrs. Stone worked for the Tisbury Police Department from 1973 to 1977.
Besides her husband, she is survived by three sons, John F. Stone of Ozark, Ala., Kenneth E. Stone of Hartford, Ala., and Barry T. Stone of West Tisbury; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral was held at the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home, Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road, Oak Bluffs.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 1 Bromfield St., Boston, MA 02108.

Rosemary M. Bergstrom, 87

Hyannis - Rosemary M. (Grant) Bergstrom, 87, died Wednesday, Feb. 21 at the Cape Regency Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Centerville.
She was the wife of Hartley N. Bergstrom Sr., who died in 1987.
Born in Worcester, Mrs. Bergstrom lived on the Cape for the past 35 years. She worked as a waitress at the former Putnam and Thurston Restaurant for 10 years before retiring.
Mrs. Bergstrom was a longtime member of the Immaculate Conception Church. She enjoyed reading and gardening.
She is survived by a daughter, Rosemary F. Bergstrom of Worcester; a son, Hartley "Bud" Bergstrom Jr. of Barnstable; two grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be March 3, at a time to be announced, in the Ellen Rogers Kennedy Chapel at Rural Cemetery, 180 Grove St., Worcester. Burial is in Rural Cemetery.

Ruby L. Daniels, 84

Marstons Mills - Ruby L. Daniels, 84, a longtime resident of Marstons Mills, died Feb. 8, 2001 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.
A native of Birmingham, Ala., Miss Daniels graduated from Tuskegee Institute in 1936 with a bachelor's degree in business administration.
After graduation, she moved to New York and then to Baltimore where she began a 30-year career with the Social Security Administration. She worked at SSA offices in New York, New Bedford and Hyannis, retiring in 1977.
Miss Daniels enjoyed playing cards, gardening and cooking. She also had a lifelong interest in vocal music.
For the last two years, Miss Daniels resided at the Cape Regency Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Centerville.
She is survived by a sister, L. Beverly Rice of Washington , D.C.; a brother, Edward J. Daniels of Hyannis; three nieces; one nephew; six great-nieces and nephews; and one great-great nephew.
A memorial service was held March 3 at the John-Lawrence Funeral Home, 3778 Falmouth Road (Route 28), Marstons Mills.

Scott C. Greene Sr., 28

Hyannis - Scott C. Greene Sr., 28, a Hyannis resident, died Wednesday, Feb. 21 2001 at Cape Cod Hospital of injuries received in an automobile accident.
Born in Woonsocket, R.I., Mr. Greene was raised in Blackstone. A resident of the Cape for the last 12 years, he worked as a roofer for Ryan Construction in Mashpee.
He is survived by his parents, Christine Levine of Hyannis and John F. Greene Jr. of Blackstone; a son, Scott C. Greene Jr. of Hyannis; two brothers, Shawn Greene of Hyannis and Connor Greene of Blackstone; two sisters, Sara Seely of Hyannis and Courtney Greene of Blackstone; his grandparents, Albert and Thelma Carpentier of Maine and John F. and Eileen Greene Sr. of Blackstone; one niece; and two nephews.
A funeral service was held at the First Lutheran Church, Route 6A, Barnstable. Burial was private.
Memorial donations may be made to the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, 206 Breed Hill Road, Hyannis, MA 02601.

Gertrude Hely, 90

Hyannis - Gertrude "Trudy" Hely, 90, a longtime resident of Hyannis, died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001 at Cape Cod Hospital.
She was the wife of Henry Hely for 62 years.
Born in Germany, Mrs. Hely came to New York City in 1940. She worked at the Hospital of Joint Diseases and, in 1949, she moved to Cranston, R.I. She moved to Hyannis in 1956 and has been a resident of West Yarmouth for the last few years.
Mrs. Hely did volunteer work at Cape Cod Hospital for several years and was an active member of Cape Cod Synagogue, Cape Cod Sisterhood and Hadassah.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Hely is survived by her daughter, Judy Zabek of San Antonio, Texas ; two granddaughters; and several cousins.
Funeral services were held at Cape Cod Synagogue, 145 Winter St., Hyannis, with a memorial observance at Mayflower Place in West Yarmouth.
Memorial donations may be made to Cape Cod Synagogue Family Education Fund, Hyannis, MA 02601.

John Dennis Hurrell, 77

West Yarmouth - John Dennis Hurrell, 77, a longtime educator, died Feb. 16, 2001 at Cranberry Pointe Rehabilitation Center in Harwich.
He was the husband of Rosamond Hurrell.
Born in London, he graduated from King's College, University of London. During World War II, he served in the Royal Navy aboard the HMS Bluebell and the HMS Chaplet.
Mr. Hurrell taught briefly at Fouad I University in Cairo before receiving his doctorate from the University of Birmingham in Stratford-on-Avon.
After teaching at the University of Iowa from 1954 to 1955, Williams College from 1955 to 1956, and the Ryerson Institute of Technology in Toronto in 1957, he joined the English Department at the University of Minnesota, where he taught until his retirement in 1989. He also served as associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota and for several years in the 1960s he was editor of the periodical Drama Survey. After his retirement, he continued to teach extension courses at the university until 1996.
Mr. Hurrell enjoyed sailing, photography and racing his Austin-Healy Sprite. He spent many summers in Barnstable and after moving to West Yarmouth last September, he enjoyed walking and exploring Cape Cod.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Susan Baudanza of Dennis; and a son, Michael R. Hurrell of Minneapolis.
A private service was held.
