James L. Gurney, 76

Osterville - James Lear Gurney, 76, a resident of Osterville, died of a hemorrhage Sept. 22, 2000, at his home.

Born in Boston, Mr. Gurney grew up in Brookline. He spent many childhood summers in the 1930s at Craigville Village on Red Lilly Pond.

A graduate of Chauncey Hall Prep School in Boston, he also graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a bachelor's degree in 1945, and later earned a master's and a doctorate in chemical engineering. At MIT, he was treasurer of the chemical engineering fraternity. He also attended Boston University Law School.

Mr. Gurney spent his career as a research engineer at Standard Oil Co. in New Jersey. There, while living in Short Hills, N.J., he helped requisition and began operating one of the first computers used in American business.

In the 1950s and 1960s, he and his family spent winters in Lake Worth, Fla. He became a year-round resident of the Cape in the mid-1950s.

From 1942 to 1943, he served in the Army, Chemical Warfare Division at Fort Rucker, Ala.

He served as a member of the board of trustees of Franklin Pierce Law Center in Concord, N.H., from its founding in 1975 until his death.

Mr. Gurney is remembered for his brilliant scientific and financial mind, his optimism and his warm, delightfully eccentric personality.

He was a spirited correspondent for decades with Alan Abelson, longtime editor of Barron's magazine; Armand Hammer and Ray Irani, presidents of Occidental Petroleum Corp. in Los Angeles; and many senators and congressmen, including Sen. Edward M. Kennedy.

Mr. Gurney was a lifelong resident of Association Beach in Craigville. He enjoyed outings in Cape waters aboard his sailboat Oxy, trips to Atlanta and spending time with his friends.

He was a keen student of the financial markets and created highly technical writings on stock market behavior and movement. He made expert studies of the oil and gas industry, leading to numerous detailed proposals to prominent government leaders concerning gas, oil and energy.

Surviving are his cousins, Mary B. Henderson of Winnetka, Ill., Ann Sommerville Lowe of Blackstone, Va., and Edith, Jimmy and Gail Vivian of Utica, N.Y.

Harriet P. Kavanagh, 66

Osterville - Harriet P. (Neinchel) Kavanagh, 66, a resident of Osterville, died Dec. 2, 2000, at her home.

She was the wife of Robert J. Kavanagh Sr.

Mrs. Kavanagh was born in Providence, R.I. She and her husband lived in Belmont for 25 years and moved to Marstons Mills 15 years ago. She was a resident of Osterville for the past five years.

Mrs. Kavanagh was the former proprietor of Weston Antiques Exchange. She was an active member of the Osterville Garden Club, the Embroiderers Guild of America and the League of Women Voters. She was an avid reader and had a lifelong love of flowers, needlework and cooking. She was a frequent volunteer at Heritage Plantation.

Surviving besides her husband are two daughters, Nancy Mirtle of Durham, N.H., and Susan Carey of Scituate; two sons, Michael Kavanagh of South Yarmouth and Robert Kavanagh Jr. of Scituate; a brother, Norman Neinchel of California; and four grandchildren.

Philip E. Lewis, 88

Osterville - Philip E. Lewis, 88, died Dec. 7, 2000, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.

He was the husband of Mildred (Terhune) Lewis.

Mr. Lewis was born in Lexington and was a graduate of the Bentley School of Finance. He was a financial officer for several different companies in the Boston area and on Cape Cod.

Mr. Lewis was a volunteer at Cape Cod Hospital for 22 years and was a member of the Osterville Men's Club.

Surviving besides his wife is a son, Alan Randell Lewis of West Palm Beach, Fla.

Margaret 'Peg' MacLeod, 82

Centerville - Margaret "Peg" MacLeod, 82, a Cape resident for 23 years, died Dec. 5, 2000, at the Cape Regency Rehabilitation and Nursing Center after a long illness.

She was the wife of the late John H. MacLeod.

Born in New York, Mr. MacLeod moved to Worcester with her family, where she attended school and later moved to Newton. She lived in Wellesley for 24 years.

Mrs. MacLeod was active in Our Lady of Victory Church, Centerville, and a member of its Women's Guild. She and her husband were active in and founders of the Centerville Newcomers.

While in Wellesley, she was active in St. Paul's Book Club and the Women's Guild.

She was known for her love of tomato gardening and her doll house.

Surviving are three sons, James J. MacLeod of Merrimack, N.H., Robert W. MacLeod of Framingham and John M. MacLeod of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two daughters, M. Kathleen Fritts of Wellesley and Bonnie Ann Maurice of Fredericksburg, Va.; a brother, James O'Donnell of Bridgewater; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Gilbert C. 'Chef' Mann, 82

Hyannis - Gilbert C. "Chef" Mann, 82, a local chef for many years, died Dec. 5, 2000, at his home after a long illness.

He was the husband of Muriel D. (Ricci) Mann, who died in 1983.

Born in East Providence, R.I., Mr. Mann was raised and educated in East Providence and Mashpee. After high school, he worked in Providence before joining the Navy and serving during World War II.

After the war, he returned to Providence and became a chef, opening his own restaurant, The Chicken Roost, in 1964. In 1991, he opened his second Chicken Roost restaurant in Hyannis. He closed his restaurants in the mid-1990s and worked for several years at the Brewster Fish and Lobster House in Brewster.

Mr. Mann worked as a chef at several area restaurants over the past 40 years, including the former Dunphys of Hyannis, RofMar Diplomat Club in Sandwich and the East Bay Lodge in Osterville.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post of Hyannis and the Hyannis Elks Club.

Surviving are a son, Gilbert E. Mann Jr. of Hyannis; six daughters, Robin Mann of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Jennifer Ramos of Hyannis, Mary Hingham of Cranston, R.I., Patricia Pirolli of West Warwick, R.I., Beverly LeClair of East Providence, R.I., and Gloria Bray of Providence, R.I.; a sister, Edith Grenier of Cranston, R.I.; a cousin, Ann Queen of Mashpee, whom he cared for; more than 60 grandchildren; more than 20 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was also the father of the late Sandra Mann.

Mary Virginia Munroe

Hyannis - Mary Virginia (Moss) Munroe, a resident of Hyannis, died Dec. 2, 2000, at her home.

She was the wife of the late Charles J. Munroe. They were married for 55 years.

Born in Verone, N.J., she was raised in Orange, N.J., before moving to Boston.

Mrs. Munroe and her husband lived in Cambridge for many years. They built a home in Hyannis in 1968 and retired there in 1978.

Mrs. Munroe retired from administrative services at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She previously worked for Harvard Health Services.

Skilled at sewing, her passion was handcrafting teddy bears, which she sold at craft fairs and flea markers. She also enjoyed gardening, spending time with children in the neighborhood and traveling. She had recently celebrated Thanksgiving in London.

She is survived by a daughter, Cheryl Sharp-D'Esopo of Groton, Conn.; a granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews.

Donald F. Roycroft, 84

Osterville - Donald F. Roycroft, 84, a resident of Osterville, died Dec. 4, 2000, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.

He was the husband of Joan (McGonagle) Roycroft and of Marguerite (Kelley) Roycroft, who died in 1973.

Born in Boston, Mr. Roycroft was raised in Brookline, where he graduated from St. Mary's. He moved to the Cape in 1970.

Mr. Roycroft was a manager for Garelick Farms, a vice president for Falmouth National Bank and at the time of his death was working at the Used Tool Store of Hyannis.

He was a member of the Iyanough Hills Golf Course and the Olde Barnstable Fairgrounds Golf Course and was a past member of the Rotary Club in Franklin.

Surviving besides his wife are two sons, Donald J. Roycroft of Centerville and Michael Roycroft of Marshfield; three daughters, Marjorie Amelung of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Maureen Kievenaar of Broad Run, Va., and Mary Saucier of Yarmouthport; 16 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Judith A. Schou, 62

Marstons MIlls - Judith A. (Zabarousky) Schou, 62, who ran the Butterworth Map Company with her husband, died unexpectedly Dec. 7, 2000, at Cape Cod Hospital.

She was the wife of Rodney Norman Shou.

Mrs. Schou was born in Boston and raised in Dorchester. A graduate of Mount Saint Joseph High School in Brighton, she attended the Katharine Gibbs School in Boston. She worked for several years at the Traveler's Insurance Company.

She married her husband in 1965. They lived in Stoughton, Ridgefield, Conn, and Franklin prior to settling on Cape Cod 25 years ago.

Mrs. Schou worked as a religious educator when her children were young and was the past president of the Braintree Junior Phlengins.

In 1975, she and her husband purchased the Butterworth Map Company, a 50-year-old company based in Westwood. In1976, they moved the company and their young family to Cape Cod.

The Schous started the business from their bogside home in West Yarmouth. They later moved to Main Street in Harwich, where they sold the maps from a little store next to their house. They lived in Barnstable before moving to Marstons Mills two years ago.

The map company now operates on Route 6A in West Barnstable.

Over the years, the Schous expanded the business from maps of Cape Cod and the Islands to producing maps of eastern and southeastern Massachusetts.

Mrs. Shou enjoyed crafts and doting on her grandchildren.

Surviving besides her husband, are a son, Christopher W. Schou of Yarmouth; three daughters, Kathryn E. Carroll of Upton, Carolyn A. Wheeler of West Palm Beach, Fla and Janette P. Movsesian of Ogunquit, Maine; a sister, Jeanne Nash of Harwich; and six grandchildren.

Ruth P. Spang, 80

Needham - Ruth Patterson Spang, 80, a former Cape Cod resident, died Nov. 24, 2000, at Newton-Wellesley Hospital after a long illness.

She was the wife of Carl Francis Spang Sr.

Raised in Wellesley, Mrs. Spang attended Dana Hall School. She received a bachelor's degree summa cum laude in foreign languages from Vassar College.

The French language was her passion, and after graduation she worked in New York City as a French translator. When the United States entered World War II, she joined the Red Cross for the duration of the war.

She married in 1946 and returned to Wellesley, where she raised her two children.

Her poems, articles and letters, which dealt with contemporary issues, from the personal tragedy of losing a loved one in World War II to the injustices of the Vietnam War, were published in magazines and newspapers, including the Saturday Evening Post and the Wall Street Journal. Her historical articles and research, done for various preservation organizations, chronicled the history of several New England landmark homes and buildings.

Mrs. Spang also excelled at painting and studied both oil and watercolor techniques. She often exhibited her paintings at art shows in Boston and Cape Cod.

She spent summers on the Cape for more than 50 years, maintaining a house in Osterville and then in West Barnstable.

Surviving besides her husband are a daughter, Sara C. Spang-BarGadda of Menlo Park, Calif.; a son, Carl Spang Jr. of Durham, N.H.; and four grandchildren.
