John E. Turgeon

New Bedford – John E. Turgeon, 80, of New Bedford died Wednesday, February 11, 2004 at St. Luke’s Hospital. He was the husband of Pauline (Bak) Turgeon; they had celebrated their 57th anniversary last August 17th.
He was born in New Bedford, son of the late Antoine and Azelia (Chase) Turgeon, and was a lifelong resident of the city. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church, New Bedford. He served as a Firefighter for the City of New Bedford for 30 years and was a member of the Retired State, County and Municipal Employees Association of Massachusetts.
Mr. Turgeon was a U.S. Marine veteran of WW II. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and a member of the Disabled American Veterans Commanders Club. He loved people, music, golfing and boating. He embraced all things in nature, especially spending time at the ocean and doing creative gardening. He will best be remembered for the joy he brought, the kindness he shared and the respect he held everyone in.
In addition to his widow, he is survived by a daughter: Helene Turgeon of New Bedford; a son: Brian J. Turgeon and his wife Susan of Sandwich, MA; 3 sisters: Pauline Benoit of New Bedford, Yvette Falleson of Rochester, NY and Doris Turgeon of Tarpon Springs, FL; 2 grandchildren: Christopher Turgeon and Jordan Turgeon both of Sandwich, MA; many loving nieces & nephews; and other family members and “adopted” family members: Eleanor Gorka of New Bedford and Jeanne Darling of Tyngsboro, MA.
He was brother of the late Antoinette Bertalotto, Emma Turcotte, Evelyn Laquerre, Lucille Turgeon and Helen Turgeon.
Following cremation, a celebratory funeral mass will be held at St. Mary’s Church, New Bedford on Friday, February 20, 2004 at 9:00 A.M.
A private ceremony of interment, with full military honors, will be held at a later date at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne, MA.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, P.O. Box 50, Memphis, TN 38101.

PLYMOUTH-Liberty F. (Fotiades) Kontos, 90, of 68 Beach Street died Tuesday, August 12th in Mayflower Nursing Home. Her husband, Nicholas Kontos died in 2000. She leaves a stepson, James Kontos of Waltham; 2 stepdaughters, Mina Davos of Chestnut Hill and Pauline Berliss of Needham; 2 brothers, Louis G. Fotiades of Raliegh, NC and Alexander G. Fotiades of Marstons Mills; 8 grandchildren; great grandchildren; many nephews and nieces. 3 brothers, Michael Fotiades, Nicholas Fotiades and Christopher Fotiades and a sister, Bessie Vestarhis predeceased her.
She was born in Johannesburg, South Africa the daughter of George M. and Maria (Laurens) Fotiades spending her childhood in Greece and moving to Worcester in 1921. She attended Worcester Schools. Mrs. Kontos was a homemaker who volunteered at Hahnamenn Hospital and many other charities and an active blood donor during WWII. She was a member of St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Worcester and a member of its Philoptochos Society and a member of St. George’s Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Cape Cod for the last 35 years.
The funeral will be Thursday, August 14th from O’Connor Brothers Funeral Home, 592 Park Avenue, Worcester with a service at 10:00 AM in St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 102 Russell Street, Worcester. WORCESTER-Evelyn L. (LeClair) Cavalieri, 68, of 1050 Main Street died August 9th in Saint Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center. She leaves her husband of 27 years, Stephen Cavalieri; 2 sons, Nelson J. Dupre, Jr. of Worcester and Richard Dupre of Leominster; 2 daughters, Susan Carreau of Worcester and Darlene Bastille of North Brookfield; a sister, Janice Pepper of Princeton; 5 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; several nephews and nieces.
She was born in Worcester the daughter of Edward and Edith (Borrows) LeClair and has lived here all of her life. Mrs. Cavalieri worked as a nurse’s aide locally for many years, until retirement. She enjoyed bingo and flea markets.
Services are private and at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. Charles H. Farnum

WORCESTER-Charles H. Farnum, 85, of 4 Cabot Street died August 4th in University of Massachusetts Healthcare-Memorial Campus after a short illness. His sister, Margaret Farnum predeceased him.
He was born in Worcester the son of Earl W. and Margaret (Davis) Farnum graduating from South High School in 1936 and attended Worcester Teachers College in the first class for males. Mr. Farnum entered the navy after college and served as a navigator in the South Pacific, a veteran of WWII. He was employed in the plumbing and heating business as an outside salesman for American Plumbing for many years until retirement and enjoyed traveling to his condo in Maine with his sister.
Funeral services and burial are private. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Greater Worcester Community Foundation, Inc., 44 Front Street, Worcester, Massachusetts, 01608. WORCESTER-Frances L. Scherner, 90 of 54 Glendale Street died Sunday, August 10th in UMass Memorial Healthcare-Memorial Campus. Her husband, Charles E. Scherner died in 1970. She leaves a son, Robert K. Scherner of Worcester; 2 daughters, Marion S. Leonhard of Palos Verdes Estates, CA and Nancy S. Hayes of New Providence, NJ; 2 grandchildren, Scott M. Leonhard of San Diego, CA and Keith Hayes of New Providence, NJ.
She was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia the daughter of Leon and Marion (Chisholm) Smith. Mrs. Scherner was a homemaker and previously worked for Crompton & Knowles Co. She loved her cat Molly, her children and her grandchildren. Her hobbies included bowling, traveling, gardening, walking, reading, and the Boston Celtics. She especially enjoyed visiting Moore State Park in Paxton.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, August 16th in O’Connor Brothers Funeral Home, 592 Park Avenue. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. WORCESTER-Elizabeth J. (Johnson) McCann, 73, of 10 Tewskbury Road died Wednesday, August 6th in St. Vincent Hospital. Her husband, Donald F. McCann died in 1992. She leaves a son, Kevin F. McCann of Rutland; 2 daughters, Kathleen Sciabarrasi and Joanne McCall both of Worcester; a brother, Philip E. Johnson of Sunapee, NH; 5 sisters, Alice Hughes of Beverly Hills, FL, Elsie Nichols of Worcester, Jean Grace of Wilmont, NH, Carol Crook of Newport, NH and Mary Whittle of Tuscon, AZ; 3 grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was born in Brattleboro, VT the daughter of Philip R. and Florence (Fitts) Johnson and lived in Worcester for many years. She graduated from Sunapee High School. Mrs. McCann was a telephone operator for Apex Answering Service for 21 years before retiring. Previously, she worked for the New England Telephone Company. She was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Church and was a Girl Scout Leader and Cub Scout Den Mother for 4 years. She also attended social day care programs at the Age Center of Worcester and enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, crafts and games.
The funeral will be Friday, August 8th from O’Connor Brothers Funeral Home, 592 Park Avenue with a Mass at 10:00 AM in St. Charles Borromeo Church, 341 June Street. CHARLOTTE, NC-Lawrence J. Sisko, Jr., 52, formerly of Worcester died Friday, January 31st at Presbyterian Hospital. He leaves his wife, Deborah (Strong) Sisko, a son, Lawrence E. Sisko; a daughter, dawn M. Meldrum; 4 brothers, Arthur T.. and William C. of Worcester, Robert L. of Brooklyn, CT, Stephen J. of Auburn; a sister, Mary E. Sisko of Auburn and many nieces and nephews. His son, Craig F. Sisko predeceased him.
He was born in Worcester, MA the son of Lawrence J. Sisko, Sr. and Catherine T. (Foley) Sisko and moved to Charlotte in 1993. He served as an electrician in the U.S. Navy and was a Disabled Veteran of Vietnam. He later attended University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Mr. Sisko was a process manager at the Charlotte Distribution Center of the T.J. Maxx Companies.
Cremation took place in Charlotte. Calling hours will be Tuesday, April 29th from 5:00 until 8:00 PM in O’Connor Brothers Funeral Home, 592 Park Avenue (oconnorbrothers.com), Worcester with a service to take place at 8:00 PM in the funeral home. Burial will be Wednesday, April 30th in Notre Dame Cemetery, Worcester following his mother’s funeral.

LAKE ZURICH, IL-Hazel F. (Foley) McCann, 88 formerly of Worcester and Falmouth died Wednesday, April 23rd in Lexington Healthcare Center. Her husband William J. McCann, Sr. died in 1987. She leaves a son, Thomas A. McCann of Barrington, IL; a daughter, Mary C. Carnevale of Alexandria, VA; 8 grandchildren; a great grandson; several nephews and nieces. Her son, William J. McCann, Jr. died in 1993.
She was born in Worcester the daughter of Andrew H. and Amelia E. (Hornig) Foley. Mrs. McCann graduated nursing school from Memorial Hospital where she practiced as a registered nurse during WWII.
The funeral will be Thursday, May 1st from O’Connor Brothers Funeral Home, 592 Park Avenue, Worcester with a mass at 10:00 AM in the Cathedral of St. Paul, 15 Chatham St., Worcester. Brian P. Carey

WORCESTER-Brian P. Carey, 18 of 46 Ledgecrest Drive, died Wednesday, April 23rd in Barnstable. He leaves his parents William P. and Sherrie L. (Korenblum), his paternal grandmother Florence (Soucy) Carey of Marlboro, and his maternal grandparents Arnold and Esther (Perolman) Korenblum of Worcester, many uncles and aunts he was extremely close to and many cousins.
He was born in Framingham and lived in Worcester for many years. Mr. Carey was a graduate of Our Lady of the Angels School and currently was a student at Holy Name High School he was due to graduate in 3 weeks. Mr. Carey was to attend Western New England College as a criminal justice major. He had been working as a dietary aide at the Auburn Life Care Center of Auburn for the past year and also served as a volunteer for the past 2 and half years there. Mr. Carey had once worked at Wendy’s in Auburn. He was an avid guitarist and performed in a local band called “Human Error”.
The funeral will be Saturday, April 26th from O’Connor Brothers Funeral Home, 592 Park Avenue, with a Mass at 10:00 AM in Our Lady of the Angels Church, 1222 Main Street.
