Robert Xifaras
March 21, 2004

Robert Xifaras, 83, of Marion, died Sunday March 21, 2004 at home after a long illness. He was the husband of Margaret M. (Paliatto) Xifaras.

Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Elias and Kanela (Xifaras) Xifaras, he lived in New Bedford before moving to Marion 40 years ago.

He was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church.

Mr. Xifaras was the proprietor of the Mariner Inn in New Bedford until his retirement in 1995.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the American Legion. He attended Northeastern University in Boston.

Survivors include his wife; 3 sons, James M. Abdelnour and his wife Janice of Dartmouth, Mark Abdelnour and his wife Jo-Anna of Marion, and Robert Xifaras of Florida; 5 daughters, Valerie Leger, Robin Xifaras and her friend, Patrick LaRue, and Cynthia Kinney, all of New Bedford, Margaret Hardsog and her husband William of Wareham, and Camille Dawn Xifaras of Assonet; a sister, Stella Strules and her husband Frank of New Bedford; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was the brother of the late Michael Xifaras, George Xifaras, Stamati Xifaras, and Koula Xifaras.

Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home for Funerals, 50 County Rd., Route 6, Mattapoisett, Thursday March 25, 2004 at 9:30 AM. Funeral Services at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 87 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford at 11 AM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours will be on Wednesday March 24, 2004 from 4-8 PM. Burial will be in Little Neck Cemetery, Marion. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 36 Cameron Ave., Cambridge, MA 02140.

Helen C. Phalon
April 24, 2003

Helen C. Phalon of Woburn, formerly of Stoneham, passed away on April 24, 2003 at Winchester Hospital. She was eighty years of age.

Born in Lowell, Ms. Phalon lived in Stoneham for many years before moving to Woburn. She was a loving and caring daughter, sister, aunt and friend. Her warm smile reflected the many special friendships she made over the years. She will be missed by all.

Ms. Phalon was a 37 year employee of Atlantic Gelatin, as a Payroll Supervisor and was serving on the Retirement Board. She was active in arts and crafts at the Jenks Center in Winchester. She was very generous and did a lot of charitable work during her life. Her family and friends were first and foremost in her life.

Helen was the beloved sister of Shirley McTighe and her late husband Robert of Stoneham, Barbara Daley and her husband George of Chelmsford and the late Edward Phalon and his wife Evelyn (Smyth) of Woburn. She was the dear aunt of eight nieces and nephews and seventeen great nieces and great nephews. Helen was the daughter of the late John H. and Helen (Eliasen) Phalon.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday at 10am at St. Joseph Church, 100 Washington St. Woburn. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend calling hours Sunday 3-7pm.

Donations in memory of Helen may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Pl., Memphis, TN 38105-1905.

Mary (deMello) Sabino
March 18, 2004
New Bedford –Maria (deMello) Sabino, 95, of New Bedford died Thursday, March 18, 2004 at St. Luke’s Hospital. She was the wife of the late Joao M. Sabino. She was the mother of Manuel, husband of Celia Sabino of S. Dartmouth, MA., Jose, husband of Zenaide Sabino of New Bedford, MA, Liberio, husband of Mariana Sabino of N. Dartmouth, MA and Humberto Sabino of New Bedford, MA. She had 12 grandchildren, several great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of Antonio and Albert DeMelo both of New Bedford, Ma., Alfred DeMelo of S. Dartmouth, MA., Constantina Duarte and Irene Oliveira both of S. Dartmouth, MA. She was also the sister of the late Manuel, Jose, Silvestre DeMelo and Filomena Costa.

Mrs. Sabino was born in New Bedford, MA. and lived in this area all of here life. She was the daughter of the late Alexandre and Constantina (deMello) deMello. She was a former fish packer at various local fish processing plants.

Her funeral will be Saturday, March 20, 2004, from the Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St. at 9:30 A.M. with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 A.M. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 230 Bonney St., New Bedford, MA. Visiting hours will be Friday, March 19, 2004 from 6 - 9 P.M. at the funeral home.

Lillian (Vargas) Tavares
March 18, 2004

New Bedford - Lillian (Vargas) Tavares, aged 89 years, died at Taber St. Nursing Center Thursday March 18, 2004. She was the widow of Alfred Tavares. She was the sister of Bertha Brown of New Bedford, and Helen Starr of South Dartmouth. She was the sister of the late Eva Plum, Mary Vargas, Grace Klein, Agnes Bissonette, Edward and Clarence Vargas, as well as several nieces and nephews, and God-children.

Mrs. Tavares was born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late John and Mary (Vincent) Vargas. She worked as a stitcher in various local clothing Mfg. She was involved with the Friends of the Elderly of Dartmouth.

Her funeral will be Monday March 22, 2004, from the Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St. at 9 A.M. with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 A.M. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 230 Bonney St., New Bedford, MA. Visiting hour will be Monday morning only just prior to going to Church.

New Bedford - Virginia (Linhares) Coelho Aged 88, Died Sunday March 21, 2004 @ New Bedford Health Care in New Bedford, She is survived by son Octavio Coelho & his wife Esperanca of Toronto, Canada, son Antonio Coelho & his wife Gilda of Toronto, Canada, daughter Maria Francisca Couto & her late husband Julio of San Miguel, daughter Gloria Coelho & her husband Jose of New Bedford, daughter Liliana Peixoto wife of Joao, son Antero Coelho & his wife Gloria, daughter Sofia Costa& her husband Antonio, Daughter Virginia Medeiros & her husband Luis All of New Bedford & son Francisco Coelho of Toronto Canada 26 Grand & 12 Great Grand.1 Brother Angelo Linhares of Rio de Janeiro, 7 Several Nieces & nephews.

Mrs. Coelho was born in Ribeira Quente St. Michael Azores, she lived in the New Bedford area since 1968. She was the daughter of the late Viginia & Manuel Linhares. She worked as a stitcher at Mickey Madan .She was a member of the Holy Rosary Society of Mt Carmel Church

Liliberkys Ortiz

Liliberkys Ortiz of New Bedford, died March 20, 2004 in Boston. She was the wife of Angel Bonet of New Bedford. She was the mother of Luis Ortiz of New Bedford. She was the sister of Maritza Ortiz, Nancy Olmo, Janet Olmo all of New Bedford. She was the step-sister of Carmen Algarin, of New Bedford. She is also survived by several nieces, and nephews.

She was the daughter of Antonio Ortiz of Puerto Rico, and Tomasa Perez of New Bedford. She was a member of The Christian Mission Hebrews: 11 By Faith Inc.

Her funeral service will Thursday March 25, 2004 at 10 A.M. at Perry Funeral Home. Officiating will be Reverend David Perry of The Christian Mission Hebrews: 11 By Faith Inc. Visiting hours will be Wednesday March 24, 2004 from 7-9 P.M., at Perry Funeral Home 111 Dartmouth St. New Bedford, MA.

Nancy Anne Pierce
March 25, 2004

New Bedford – Nancy Anne Pierce of New Bedford, 49, died Thursday March 25, 2004 at home. She is survived by her parents, her daughter, Jessica Lynn Pierce of New Bedford, her granddaughter, Natasheia Ramos of Lakeville, her three brothers, Robert I. Pierce Jr. of Acushnet, Dale K. Pierce of Lakeville, and Wayne C. Pierce of Portsmouth, R.I., her two sisters, Carole Lee Green of Lakeville and Beverly Jean Beaudry of New Bedford, her special friend James Daniels of New Bedford and several nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late Kenneth A. Pierce.

She was born in New Bedford, and lived in this area all of her life. She was the daughter of Robert I. Pierce Sr. and Lillian (Augustine) Pierce. Ms. Pierce was a retired cosmetologist, having worked at various local beauty parlors.

Visiting hours are Sunday March 28th from 6 to 9 PM at the funeral home. Relative and friends are invited to attend. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the charity of your choice.

Faustino Carreiro
March 29, 2004

New Bedford – Faustino Carreiro, 90, of New Bedford, died Monday, March 29, 2004, at St. Luke’s Hospital. He was the husband of Armorinda (Dos Santos) Carreiro. He was the father of Maria G. Coelho, wife of Antero Coelho of New Bedford and Manuel Carreiro, husband of Ofelia Carreiro of New Bedford. He is survived by 5 grandchildren. Mr.Correia was the brother of Jose Gerald Carreiro of New Bedford and the late Manuel Tavares Carreiro .

Mr. Carreiro was born in Achada, Nordeste, Portugal and lived in this area for the past 37 years. He worked as weaver at the Berkshire-Hathaway Mills until his retirement. Mr.Carreiro liked to play cards at Ashley Park with his friends.

His funeral will be Thursday, April 1, 2004, from the Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St. at 9:30 A.M. with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 A.M. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Rivet St. New Bedford, MA. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Wednesday, March 31, 2004 from 6 – 9 P.M.

Germino Correia
March 05, 2004

New Bedford – Germino Correia, 86, of New Bedford, died Friday March 5, 2004, at St. Luke’s Hospital. He was the husband of Amelia (Polycarpo) Correia. He was the father of Lucas, Frank and Paul Correia and father-in-law of Kim Correia all of New Bedford. Mr.Correia had 5 grandchildren Jesse Correia, Jose Sindo, Jordan Sindo, Collin Correia and Jillian Correia, and several brothers and sisters.

Mr. Correia was born in St. Michael, Azores and lived in this area for the past 37 years. He was the son of Francisco and Isabelle Correia.

His funeral will be Monday, March 8, 2004, from the Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St. at 8 A.M. with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 A.M. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Rivet St. New Bedford, MA. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Sunday March 7, 2004 from 4 – 7 P.M.

Elvira Costa
March 12, 2004

Elvira Costa died March 12, 2004 at St. Luke’s Hospital. She was the sister of Frank and Manuel Costa of New Bedford, and the late Emily Cruz She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Ms. Costa was the daughter of the late Manuel and Mary (Costa) Costa. She lived in this area all her life. .

Ms. Costa was a tire builder at Goodyear Tire & Rubber until her retirement..

In accordance with her wishes she will be cremated. Interment of ashes will be private..

New Bedford – Jose F. Monteiro 46, of New Bedford died March 13, 2004. He was the beloved Husband of Ana (Soares) Monteiro. He was the father of Ann Monteiro of New Bedford, Jessica Monteiro of New Bedford. He was the loving Grandfather of Tyler M. Moteiro of New Bedford, Anastayha Tillson of New Bedford. He was the brother of Jose Roberto. Garcia of New Bedford, Jose Noberto. Monteiro of New Bedford, Carolina, Fatima Oliveira Fayal Azores, Celeste Toste of New Bedford, Adelaide Silva of new Bedford.

Mr. Monteiro was born in Pico, Azores. He is the son of Maria J. (Garcia) Monteiro of Fayal, Azores and the late Jose M. Monteiro. He was a weaver at Quaker Fabric. His favorite pastime was being with his wife Ana, taking her out dancing to Portuguess Club, sightseeing toward Cape Cod and going too Foxwoods, He enjoyed playing soccer and being among family and friends, He was Vice Pres. Of Liga Club, He played soccer and was a member of St. Michael Social Club, Portuguese Sports Club, Fialance Club and Recordacoes Club.

His funeral will be Thursday March 18, 2004, from the Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St. at 8 A.M. with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 A.M. at St. John the Baptist Church, New Bedford, MA. Visiting hours will be Wednesday March 17, 2004 from 4 - 8 P.M.

Manuel Furtado

New Bedford – Manuel Furtado 74, of New Bedford died March 14, 2004. He was the beloved husband of the Maria Gloria(Deus) Furtado. He was the father Dora Pimentel wife of Jose of South Dartmouth. Mr. Furtado has a granddaughter Jessica Luz, and one Great-grand daughter Jesslyn Luz. He is the brother of John Furtado of New Bedford, Jaime Furtado New Bedford, Louis Furtado of South Dartmouth, Gloria Amaral of New Bedford, Naria Sousa of New Bedford, Ilda Ferreira of New Bedford, DoraFerreira of New Bedford, Lidia Deus of North Dartmouth, Jorselina Pacheco of Toronto Canada, and the late Guilhermina Raposo.

Mr. Furtado was born in Lomba do Cavalar Povacao, St.Michael, Azores. He was the son of the late Manuel and Beatrice (Ferreira) Furtado. He was a Mason Laborer, for Larry Salvucci.

His funeral will be Friday March 19, 2004, from the Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St. at 8A.M. with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 A.M. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 230 Bonney St. New Bedford, MA. Visiting hours will be Thursday March 18, 2004 from 2 - 4 P.M., from 7 - 9 P.M.

Harry DeCosta
March 29, 2004

South Dartmouth - Harry DeCosta, 87, died Monday, March 29, 2004 at Brandon Woods of So. Dartmouth . He was the husband of the late Anna (Perreira) DeCosta. Mr. DeCosta is survived by three daughters Suzanne M. Viveiros, and Rose Costa both of New Bedford and Mary F. Langis of Farmingdale, N.Y. He is survived by a sister Silvanna Costa of So. Dartmouth and a brother Gilbert Costa of New Bedford, as well as several nieces and nephews. Mr. DeCosta also had several deceased brothers and sisters.

Mr. DeCosta was born in New Bedford and lived in this area all of his life. He was the the son of the late Joseph and Guilhermina Rosa (DeJesus) DeCosta of New Bedford. Mr. DeCosta was formerly employed as a machine operator at John I. Paulding.

The funeral will be Thursday, April 1, 2004 from Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St. at 7:45 A.M. with a mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 AM at St. Mary’s Church So. Dartmouth. Relatives and friends are invited to Visiting Hours Wednesday, March 31, 2004 from 5 to 8 P.M.at the funeral home.

New Bedford – Mary "Phyllis"Filomena (Abreu) 71, of New Bedford, died Thursday July 22, 2004, at Bedford Village Nursing Home Inc. New Bedford MA. She was the wife of the late Leonard Soares. She was the mother of Leonard, husband of Raylene, Soares of Salt Lake City Utah, Thomas Soares, and his dear friend Paula A. Guillette, of New Bedford MA. and the late David Soares. She was the sister of M. Adelaide Abreu, Maria “Izzy” Conway, Leonard Abreu, all from New Bedford MA., Antonio Abreu and Irene Souza both from Dartmouth MA., Luciana Langlois of Vero Beach Fla, Madelene Raucci of German Town, New York, Natalie Fredette of Tiverton R.I., Teresa Abreu of New York, NY, and the late Maria M' Kinley. She had four grandchildren Tanya, Shane, Heather, Jennifer. Also Two Great-grandchildren Andres and Devon.

Mrs. Soares was born Madeira Portugal. She lived most of her life in this area. She was the daughter of the late Jose and Maria Jose (Gouveia) Abreu. She worked as a Stitcher at Local Clothing Mills. She loved dancing especially the “Hully Gully” and playing 500 Rummy. She was a devoted mother, a great sister and a friend to all who came in contact with. We are forever grateful for the care from the hospice team of the Southcoast Hospital Group.

The funeral will be Monday July 26, 2004, from the Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St. at 9:30A.M. with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours will be held Sunday July 25 from 5 - 8.

Cynthia P. Sipple
July 14, 2004

Cynthia P. (Adriano) Sipple-65-passed away July 14, 2004 @ St. Luke’s Hospital. She was the widow of James Sipple. She was the beloved mother of Shawn Sipple of Dartmouth, Tammy Moniz of New Bedford and Carol Rego of New Bedford. She was loved grandmother of Joshua Sipple, James Jr. and Crystal Moniz and Catherine Rego. Mrs. Sipple had 2 brothers; Albert Adriano of New Bedford and the late Manuel Adriano, and 1 twin sister the late Madonna Santiago. She had 1 aunt, Irene DeMello of S. Dartmouth and several nieces, nephews and godchildren.

Mrs. Sipple was born in New Bedford, daughter of the late Manuel Adriano and the late Hilda C. (Martin) Adriano. Mrs. Sipple worked as a Skinner in the Fishing Indusrty. She lived in this area all of her life. She was a member of the Dirty Dozen Club of New Bedford.

Her Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, July 17, 2004 @ St. Lawrence Church @ 9:00am. Family and friends are invited. Burial will follow @ St. John’s Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held Friday, July 16, 2004 from 5-9pm.

Manuel DaCosta
July 25, 2004
Manuel DaCosta passed away Sunday, July 25, 2004 @ St. Luke's Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Maria G. (Frias) for 61 years. He was the loved father of Edwin F. DaCosta of Dartmouth and Joseph F. DaCosta of Lakeville. Mr. DaCosta also had 1 brother, the late Larry Raposo. Mr. DaCosta had 6 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Mr. DaCosta was born in New Bedford, son of the late Manuel and Maria (Raposo) DaCosta. He worked as a carpenter with Dyrelite.

His Funeral Mass will be held Thursday, July 29, 2004 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 9:00am. Family an friends are invited. Burial will follow at St. John's Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held Wednesday, July 28, 2004 from 5-8pm

Leo Mello

New Bedford – Leo Mello, 89, of New Bedford, died Saturday July 17, 2004, at Blaire House. He was the Husband of the late Mary (Gawron) Mello. Mr. Mello was the father of Barbara Miguel of Sun Lakes Arizona Jane Perry of No. Dartmouth and Leona Braley of E.Freetown. He was the Grandfather of Susan Miguel, Sandra Manning, David Miguel, Thomas Perry, Kimberly LeBeau, Kristine Cardinal and Michael Brailey. And He is also survived by 7 great grandchildren

Mr, Mello was born in New Bedford and lived in this area all of his life. He was the son of the late Anthony and Florinda ( Simas) Mello

Mr. Mello was the former Owner and Proprietor of Mello’s Auto Service.

His funeral will be Wednesday, July 21, 2004, from the Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St. at 9 A.M. with a Funeral Mass at 10 A.M. at St. James Church, County St., New Bedford, MA. Visiting hours are Tuesday, July 20, 2004 from – 5 to 8 P.M. Burial will be at Rural Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Beacon Hospice; 529 Main St.; Suite 101; Charlestown, MA. 02129
