Joan C. Stanley, 79

Cummaquid - Joan (Cunningham) Stanley, 79, a needlepoint artist, died Saturday, July 17, 1999 at home after a brief illness.

She was the wife of Charles 'Chuck' Stanley for 58 years.

Born in Cambridge, she was raised in Newton. Mrs. Stanley also resided in Wellesley Hills. She was a graduate of Chamberlayne College and The Modern School of Art, both in Boston.

Mrs. Stanley was best known for her needlepoint portraits, hand-embroidered clothing, and her matching bows.

Besides her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Nancy O'Neil of Cummaquid; three sons, Mark Stanley, Brian Stanley and Dean Stanley, all of Centerville; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

She was also the mother of the late John S. Stanley.

Burial was in Beechwood Cemetery, Centerville.

Angelina G. Caiado, 71

Centerville - Angelina (Gigante) Caiado, 71, an eight-year Cape resident, died Saturday, July 10, 1999 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.

She was the wife of Arthur E. Caiado.

Mrs. Caiado was born in Winchester and educated in Stoneham and Italy. She was a graduate of Stoneham High School.

She was employed as a buyer for Discom Inc. in Wesaford, until retiring in the late 1980s. She had lived on Cape Cod for eight years.

Mrs. Calado was a member of the Sons of Italy in Stoneham and a Communicant of St. Francis Xavier Church in Hyannis.

Besides her husband, she is survived by a son, Arthur G. Caiado of Centerville; a daughter, Anne M. Graham of Centerville; two brothers, John Gigante of New Hampshire and Anthony Gigante of Spring Hills, Fla.; two sisters, Mary Luci of Stoneham and Antonietta Busa of Woburn; and seven grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, P.O. Box 50, Memphis, TN 38101.

Oliver Ted Champagny, 88

Cotuit - Oliver Ted Champagny, 88, a resident of Cotuit, died Thursday, July 22, 1999 at Quincy City Hospital.

He was the husband of the late Monica (Reilly) Champagny.

Born in Gilbertville, Mr. Champagny was educated in Worcester schools and attended American University in Washington , D.C. He lived in Marshfield before moving to Osterville and then to Cotuit.

Mr. Champagny worked for Crompton and Knowles Loom Works in Worcester, then moved to Washington , D.C., where he worked for the Treasury Department, Bureau of Engraving and Printing. He was contracting officer for 10 years before retiring in 1972.

A World War II Army veteran, he served in Africa, fought in the entire Italian Campaign and spent five years in the Artillery of the Army.

Surviving are a daughter, Denise Kelley of South Weymouth; a sister, Mitzi Daltwas of Worcester; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Burial was in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.

Peter Chirigotis, 43

Hyannis - Peter Chirigotis, 43, died Saturday, July 24, 1999 at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston after complications' from open-heart surgery.

Born in Lowell, Mr. Chirigotis was raised and educated in Merrimac. He attended Fitchburg State College and later worked for Raytheon in electronics, defense systems.

He retired in the mid-'80s and moved from Merrimac to Lowell, and then to Hyannis in 1991.

Mr. Chirigotis loved the beach, and was a black belt in karate.

He is survived by his parents, Col. G. Steve Chirigotis of Merrimac and Olga (Petrakos) Chirigotis of Cummaquid; a sister, Helen Kokoras of Hillsboro, N.H.; five brothers, Maj. Stephen J. Chirigotis of Wichita Falls, Texas , Charles Chirigotis and William Chirigotis, both of New Bedford, Frederick Chirigotis of Cummaquid, and John Chirigotis of Anchorage, Alaska; and several uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews.

William J. Hansen Jr., 41

Hyannis - William J. Hansen Jr., 41, a professional merchant mariner, died unexpectedly Friday, July 9, 1999 of a heart attack.

Raised in Taunton, he was a 1975 graduate of Coyle Cassidy High School. In 1984, he graduated from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in Buzzards Bay, with a bachelor's degree in marine transportation.

For the last nine years, Mr. Hansen was employed by the International Wildlife Coalition of Falmouth, where he served as captain of the research vessel Navaho. He was also a guest lecturer for National Science Foundation programs at Bridgewater State College. Active involvement in the marine mammal stranding was also a major focus of his career.

Mr. Hansen's maritime career included service as captain of the research vessel Diane G. which operated in the Gulf of Mexico. He was also third officer for Ocean Drilling & Exploration Company of Los Angeles aboard the oil rig Ocean Endeavor and for the cargo/passenger carrying vessels for the Woods Hole, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket Steamship Authority.

He is survived by his mother, Catherine (Whelan) Hansen of Taunton and Hyannis; a brother, Mark G. Hansen of Marstons Mills; four sisters, Catherine A. Walton of Plymouth, Elaine M. Hansen-Gay of Hyannis, Patricia L. Isenor and Mary E. Hansen, both of Taunton; a devoted friend, Nancy Kelly and her daughter Caitlin Kelly, both of Osterville and 13 nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations may be made to the Massachusetts Maritime Academy Alumni Association, 101 Academy Drive, Buzzards Bay, MA 02532; or the International Wildlife Coalition, 77 East Falmouth Highway, E. Falmouth, MA 02536.

Michael J. Legan, 80

Hyannisport - Michael J. Legan, 80, died Thursday, July 15, 1999 at his home from cancer.

He was married to Josephine (Podworny) Legan for 51 years.

Born in Bridgewater, he was a 1938 graduate of Boston College High School and 1942 graduate of the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy.

He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII in the South Pacific.

He owned and operated Legan's Apothecary in Bridgewater for 25 years. He also worked as a pharmacist for Corrigan Mental Health Center in Fall River before retiring in 1984.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and American Rhododendron Society, and a Communicant of Our Lady of Victory Church in Centerville.

Besides his wife, Mr. Legan is survived by two sons, Mark. Legan of Middleboro and Robert Legan of E. Lebanon, Maine; four daughters, Catherine Legan of Quincy, Jeanne Rommers of Centerville, Maryrose Flynn of Hanover, and Margaret Abramo of Londonderry, N.H.; two brothers, Bruce Legan of New Jersey and Raymond Legan of Cotuit; three sisters, Edna Lloyd of Santa Barbara, Calif., Katherine Bertelli of Bridgewater, and Valerie Falese of Cotuit; 12 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Burial was in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Centerville.

Thomas J. Melia, Jr., 91

Osterville - Thomas J. Melia Jr., 91, a retired electrical engineer, died Thursday, July 22, 1999 at his home after an illness.

He was the husband of Margaret M. (Brissette) Melia, who died in 1991.

Born in Worcester, Mr. Melia lived in Sutton for 18 years before moving to Osterville in 1978. He graduated from South High School in Worcester and from Northeastern University in Boston in 1933 with a degree in electrical engineering.

Mr. Melia was an electrical engineer for the former American Steel and Wire Co. in Worcester, a division of U.S. Steel Corp., for 41 years, retiring in 1972. During that time, he patented several cables for the U.S. government and for the oil industry He was recognized for his work with the Navy in the development of complicated wiring and cabling for U.S. submarines.

During the 1960s, he bred and raised Morgan horses at his home in Sutton. He was a former member of St. Mark's Church in Sutton.

He enjoyed traveling, gardening, golf and family activities throughout his lifetime and spent the last 21 years at his retirement home on the Cape.

Surviving are two sons, Paul A. Melia and Garry T. Melia, both of Sutton; a daughter, Lynn A. Fisher of Falmouth; a sister, Margaret Leland of East Brookfield; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Burial was in Howard Cemetery, Sutton.

Jane Sara Nickulas, 59

West Barnstable - Jane Sara (Cohee) Nickulas, 59, a 37-year Cape beauty salon owner, died Saturday, July 24, 1999 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis of cancer.

She was the wife of Donald Nickulas.

Born in Belfast, Maine, she was raised and educated in Marshfield. She attended the Parson School of Design in New York before purchasing her first beauty salon.

Mrs. Nickulas was in the beauty salon business for 37 years. She owned Joseph's in South Yarmouth and Jane's Place in West Barnstable. She was an avid golfer and a member of the Cummaquid Golf Club.

Besides her husband, she is survived by her mother Beryl (Newcombe) Cohee of West Yarmouth; two brothers, Douglas Cohee of Palm Coast, Fla., and Vincent Cohee of Pasadena, Calif.; a sister, Debra Morin of Huntington Beach, Calif.; and two nephews and a niece.

Memorial donations may be made to Cape Cod Hospital Cancer Unit, 27 Park St., Hyannis, MA 02601; or to the West Barnstable Fire and Rescue, 2160 Meetinghouse Way, West Barnstable, MA 02668.

Elizabeth Sheils McIntire Ricker, 64

Centerville - Elizabeth Sheils McIntire Ricker, 64, a longtime Cape resident, died Sunday, July 11, 1999 at Harbor Point of Centerville Assisted Living.

Mrs. Ricker was raised in New Rochelle, N.Y., one of nine children. She attended Ursuline Schools where she excelled in drama. She was a 1937 graduate of the College of New Rochelle.

In 1941, she married Frederic J. McIntire and lived in Marblehead with their five children. Dr. McIntire died in 1957.

In 1976, Mrs. Ricker married Nathan B. Ricker and they moved to Yarmouthport. She was again widowed in 1990.

She is survived by four daughters, Sheila Barry of Chestertown, Md., Maurie Flanagan of Martha's Vineyard, Lydia Thomson and Jean McIntire, both of Townshend, Vt.; a son, F. Joseph McIntire HI of Newburyport; three brothers; two sisters; 19 grand, children; one great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

Burial was at St. Mary's Cemetery, Lynn.

Donald F. Rogers, 74

Hyannis - Donald F. Rogers, 74, a retired auto body specialist, died Wednesday, July 21, 1999 at his home.

He was the husband of Florence Rogers.

Born in Cotuit, Mr. Rogers was raised in Marstons Mills and educated in Barnstable. He married in 1952 and moved to Hyannis.

He worked as an auto body specialist in a number of auto body shops in the Hyannis area. He retired in 1984.

Mr. Rogers enjoyed clamming, gardening and helping neighbors with odd jobs. He also loved to horse-trade with his friends. He would often volunteer on his own to visit local nursing homes to support others in need.

Surviving besides his wife are a daughter, Dawn M. Burt of Centerville; a brother, Ray R. Rogers of Hyannis; three sisters, Evelyn Rogers, Vivian Bernman and Lillian Cabeca, all of New Jersey; two grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Burial was in Mosswood Cemetery, Putnam Avenue, Cotuit.
