Eleanor R. Conant
GREENFIELD - Eleanor R. (Robichaud) Conant, 85, of 98 South Green River Road died Saturday (11/24/07) in Hopkinton, Mass., at the home of her daughter.
She was born on May 19, 1922 in Montague, the daughter of Leon H. and Margaret (Hildebrand) Robichaud.
She attended local school in Turners Falls and Greenfield and was a graduate of Greenfield High School, Class of 1940. She also attended University of Miami in Florida.
Mrs. Conant was a homemaker. She worked for a period of time at the Greenfield Tap & Die and Wilson's Department Store.
Eleanor was also a member of the Board of Organized Work at the Baystate Franklin Medical Center and also did knitting for the hospital. She volunteered at the Greenfield Visitor Center.Eleanor was a member of the S.P.C.C. and the Greenfield Garden Club. She was on the Greenfield Recycling Committee which was instrumental in forming the Bottle Bill of the 1970s.
She was an avid Red Sox fan and enjoyed golfing, gardening, traveling, camping and skiing. Eleanor especially enjoyed summers at the family camp on the Green River.
Among her survivors she leaves her husband of 64 years Chester C. Conant, Sr. of Greenfield; one daughter, Mary McManus and her husband Lawrence of Hopkinton; five sons, James Conant and his wife Donna of Greenfield, William Conant and his wife Barbara of Greenfield, MA, Chester C. Conant, Jr. and his wife Cynthia of Amesbury, Mass., Robert of Rye, N.H., Charlie and his wife Kate of Greenfield. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law Nancy F. Conant. She leaves 22 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Her son Richard "Birdie" Conant predeceased her in 2001.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 8:15 a.m. at the Kostanski Funeral Home 220 Federal St. followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. at Holy Trinity Church with the Rev. John Roache, officiating. Burial will follow in Aaron Clark cemetery in Turners Falls.
Calling hours will be Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Carol Ann Smith
Greenfield, MA -Carol Ann (Dunleavy) Smith, 66, of 14 East Cleveland St. died on Saturday (11/24/07) at the Baystate Franklin Medical Center.
She was born in Greenfield on January 21, 1941 the daughter of John H. & Helen M. (Baronas) Dunleavy, Sr. She graduated from St. Michael's High School in Brattleboro, Vt.
Carol was a waitress at Bill's Restaurant for over 35 years and was also employed at the Baystate Franklin Medical Center for 14 years in the Food Service Department.
She was a member of the Women of the Moose in Greenfield. Carol enjoyed spending time with her family and friends & reading.
Among her survivors she leaves her husband of 32 years, Roger H. Smith, one son, Robert C. Smith of Denver, CO, two daughters, Karin (Hass) McDonald of Greenfield and Heidi Haas of Millers Falls, one grandson, Michael R. Tombs of Millers Falls, three brothers, John H. Dunleavy, Jr. of Milford, NH, James Dunleavy of Hinsdale, NH, and Francis Dunleavy of Brattleboro, VT, one sister, Rosemary George of Milford, NH and several nieces & nephews.
Funeral services will be Thursday (11/29) at 8:15am from the Kostanski Funeral Home 220 Federal St., followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9am at Holy Trinity Church with the Monsignor Ronald G. Yargeau officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
Calling hours will be Wednesday (11/28) from 5pm-8pm at the funeral home.

James Thurston Jr.
TURNERS FALLS - James Thurston Jr., 78, of 66 Turners Falls Road, died Wednesday (11-21-07), at home.
Services are private.

Ruth E. White
TURNERS FALLS - Ruth E. (Phelps) White, 94, formerly of Avenue A, died Tuesday (11-20-07) at Poet's Seat Health Care Center in Greenfield.
She was born in Greenfield on June 28, 1913, the daughter of Guy and Eva (Hicks) Phelps. She graduated from Arms Academy, Shelburne Falls, in 1932. She had been a resident of Sunderland most of her life prior to moving to Turners Falls in 1994.
Ruth was a homemaker and enjoyed crocheting, shopping and dancing.
Her husband, Clifton L. White, predeceased her in 1993.
Survivors include a son, James G. White and his wife Carol of Turners Falls; a granddaughter, Sherry Nadeau of Turners Falls; a great-granddaughter, Ashley Nicole White; a great-great-granddaughter, Alhanna, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 1 Kostanski Square. Burial will follow in Brookside cemetery in South Deerfield.
Calling hours at the funeral home will be Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m.

Jo Ann Derrig
TURNERS FALLS - Jo Ann (Hallet) Derrig, 61, of Turners Falls died Monday (11-19-07) of cancer. "Jo, " as she was known to many, spent her last days at home, surrounded by family and friends.
Born June 5, 1946 to parents, Francis ("Mal") Hallet and Helen (Gagne) Hallet, she was the fifth of seven children raised in Groton and Townsend. While attending North Middlesex Regional High School, she stood out for her friendliness, spontaneity and sense of humor.
A blind date led to marriage to John J. Derrig, Jr., on Aug. 19, 1968. The couple had four children and were married
for 23 years.
She was a self-employed interior painter and wallpaper hanger for more than 25 years. Not one to ever be bored or idle, Jo Ann used her famous artistic abilities to not only renovate, "from bow to stern, " her own beloved antique home, but assist her customers in doing the same. She possessed a unique ability to share her creativity, talents and resourcefulness.
In recent years, she dispensed her endless fixer-upper wisdom and decor know-how at Home Depot in Greenfield - where they still have trouble cutting a blind without her.
Jo Ann is survived by three daughters, Tracy Derrig-Herland of Ashfield, Caroline Derrig of Vineyard Haven and Deborah Derrig of St. Helena, CA, and her son-in-law, Chris Herland; grandchildren: Audrey, Walter and Henry Herland; siblings, Paul Hallet, James Hallet, Sandra Walker, Cynthia Beard, Karen Cosper and Mary Lewis, as well as many beloved nephews, nieces and cousins. Also impossible to omit are countless friends, whom Jo would describe as having "adopted" into her family.
She was predeceased by her former husband (1992) and an infant son, John J. Derrig III (1969).
Local calling hours will be Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 1 Kostanski Square.
Calling hours at the Badger Funeral Home, 45 School St., Groton, will be Monday from 5 to 7 p.m.
A graveside service will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Groton Cemetery.
Remembrances in Jo's honor might include: reading a book to your grandchildren (or any child), making a point to get to pay attention to those around you despite life's busyness or surprising a friend with a visit.

Virginia A. Harris
GREENFIELD - Virginia A. (Barnes) Harris, 85, formerly of Lincoln Street, died Sunday (11-18-07) at the Buckley HealthCare Center.
She was born in Greenfield on Dec. 15, 1921, the daughter of Herbert and Edith Barnes. She graduated from Greenfield High School in 1939 and had been a lifelong resident of Greenfield.
Virginia was the activities director for the former Franklin Nursing Home for 10 years, retiring in 1986. Previously, she was employed as a certified nursing assistant at Poet's Seat Nursing Home and as an elevator operator at the former Weldon Hotel.
She served in the U.S. Army during WWII and attained the rank of private first class.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church.
Virginia loved spending time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and family and attending family reunions. Also, she enjoyed bus trips with her sister, Doris. In her younger years she enjoyed dancing.
Her husband, David R. Harris Sr., predeceased her in 1990.
Survivors include two sons, David R. Jr. of Shelburne and Thomas of Wilmington, Vt.; a daughter, Ellie Harris of Greenfield; a sister, Doris Peters of Greenfield; three grandchildren, Cinnamon Xeno, Kelly Boutwell and Kim Celli; eight great-grandchildren, Elijah, Alexis, Jarell, Desiree, Dylan, Angela, Laney and Courtney, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Willie Seals, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Green River Cemetery.
A calling hour will be Saturday at the First Baptist Church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

Richard A. Smith
GREENFIELD - Richard "Smitty" A. Smith, 87, of 24 West St., died Saturday (11-17-07) at home.
He was born in Greenfield on June 13, 1920, the son of Walter and Clara (Grover) Smith.
He was a graduate of Greenfield High School and a lifelong resident of Greenfield.
Smitty was a wrecker driver for the former Sirum's Garage on Main Street for 10 years. Previously, he was employed as a service manager for Dillon Chevrolet for more than 25 years. Also, he owned the former Mobile Service Station on the Mohawk Trail.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and attained the rank of master sergeant.
Smitty was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, the former Josephine W. Getzman; a son, Richard S. Peel of Greenfield; five daughters, Carol A. Bresciano, Valerie J. Rowell, Suzanne L. Smith and Janice M. Smith, all of Greenfield, and Barbara L. Williams of Deerfield; eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces.
A memorial service will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 220 Federal St. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
