Robert A. Fregeau
TURNERS FALLS - Robert A. Fregeau, 76, of 36 Davis St. died Friday (10-12-07) at the Winchester Hospital in Winchester, Mass.
He was born in Greenfield on Aug. 18, 1931, the son of Alphonse and Isabelle (Couture) Fregeau. He attended local schools in Greenfield and graduated from Greenfield High School in 1949.
Bob was employed for the New England Telephone Co. for 40 years, retiring as a staff auditor in 1991.
He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and attained the rank of staff sergeant.
He was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Greenfield.
He was a life member of the Montague Lodge of Elks.
Bob enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, gardening, camping, scuba diving and collecting stamps and coins.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, the former Jean L. Bitzer; a son, Mark R. and his wife Patricia of Wilmington; two grandchildren, Michelle and Matthew Fregeau of Wilmington, and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in St. James Episcopal Church. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Mary Machaiek
GREENFIELD - Mary (Duda) Machaiek, 91, of 52 Vernon St. died peacefully on Thursday (10-11-07) at home.
She was born in Wilbraham on May 28, 1916, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Milkosc) Duda. She attended schools in Poland and returned to the United States in 1938. She had been a resident of Greenfield since 1946.
Mary was employed by the Millers Falls Co. during World War II and then for Rugg Lumber Co. for 13 years.
She was a homemaker and enjoyed crocheting, gardening and sewing.
Mary was a communicant of the former Sacred Heart Church in Greenfield.
Survivors include her husband of 66 years, Henry Machaiek; a son, Henry J. and his wife Elaine of Newburyport; two grandsons, Alex and Timothy Machaiek of Haverhill, and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a sister, Stephanie Wlodarzyk.
A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Peace Church, 90 Seventh St., Turners Falls, with the Rev. Stanley J. Aksamit, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Mater Dolorosa cemetery in Greenfield.
A calling hour at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 220 Federal St., Greenfield, will be Monday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
Lois A. MacIntire
TURNERS FALLS - Lois A. (Lilja) MacIntire, 77, of 116 Montague St. died Thursday (10-11-07) at home.
She was born in Malden on March 13, 1930. She graduated from Danvers High School in 1948 and the Salem Hospital School of Nursing in 1951. She had been a resident of Hopkinton prior to relocating to Turners Falls in 2005.
Lois was a registered nurse for the adult Day Center in Framingham for 23 years, retiring in 2005.
Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Raymond J. MacIntire; a son, Allan K. and his wife Faith Diemand of Wendell; a daughter, Leanne MacIntire and her husband David Zuckerman of Bel Air Md.; a brother, Richard Lilja of Danvers; two sisters, Marilyn White of the state of Florida and Sharon King of Peabody; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial gathering will be held on a date and time to be announced. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Joseph G. Kabaniec
GREENFIELD - Joseph G. Kabaniec, 83, of 25 Cypress St., died Sunday (10-7-07) at home.
He was born in Montague on Nov. 30, 1923, the son of Gregory and Rosalie (Bergiel) Kabaniec.
He attended Turners Falls High School and had been a resident of Greenfield most of his life.
Joe was a painter for Childs and Son in Northampton for 35 years, retiring in 1986. Previously, he was employed for Couture Bros. in Turners Falls.
He served in the Merchant Marines and then served with the U.S. Army in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre of War during World War II and attained the rank of Technician 5th grade. He received the Asiatic Pacific Theatre of War Campaign Ribbon and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one bronze star.
Joe was a member of the American legion Post. #81 of Greenfield and a life member of the Shelburne Falls VFW. Also, he was a member of the St. Kazimerz Society and the Turners Falls Athletic Club.
He was an avid Yankees fan and enjoyed vegetable gardening, playing cards, the lottery, sports and reading.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, the former Shirley E. Richardson, two sons, Neil C. of Brattleboro, Vt., and Jay R. and his wife, Barb, of Greenfield; two daughters, Dale S. Remick and her husband Gary and Karen E. Knox and her husband Rick, all of Greenfield; a brother, Chester Kabaniec and his wife Margaret of Millers Falls, 15 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was pre-deceased by a daughter, Jo A. Galipault.
A memorial service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church with the Rev. Judith Kinley, pastor, officiating.
Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Helen M. Shepard
GREENFIELD - Helen M. (Rushford) Shepard, 88, of Bradford Drive died Thursday (11-29-07) at home.
She was born in Northampton on Jan. 17, 1919, the daughter of George and Ethel (Smith) Rushford. She was a graduate of Northampton High School. She had been a longtime resident of Greenfield.
Helen owned and operated the former Shepard Kennels Rooming and Boarding until 1982. Previously, she was employed as a veterinarian assistant for Dr. Peck, Goodnow's Department Store, a bookkeeper for the American News Co. and also Clearweave.
Her husband, Raymond A. Shepard, predeceased her on Dec. 18, 1999.
Survivors include a daughter, Teresa M. Horta and her husband Raymond of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; four grandchildren, Tari Ann Grimard, Mark Horta, Wendy Mullen and Debra Andrews; nine great-grandchildren, Brandon Horta, Cameron Lail, Kyle, Lexie, Talla and Corbyn Grimard, Robert Horta and Jeffrey and Jayson Andrews; a great-great-granddaughter, Lacey Marie Horta, and two nieces.
She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Brenda J. (Horta) Morris.
A memorial service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 1 Kostanski Square, Turners Falls.
Calling hour at the funeral home will be Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Paul J. Fontaine
GREENFIELD - Paul J. Fontaine, 69, of 491 Main St., Morgan Allen House, passed away Sunday (11-25-07) at Poet's Seat Health Care Center following a brief courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in Montague City on May 12, 1938, the son of Louis and Rhea (Cadorette) Fontaine. He attended Holy Trinity School and graduated from Greenfield High School in 1956.
At an early age, he lived with Bud and June Foster in Bernardston and considered that home. He worked for Foster's Super Market for many years.
Paul served in the U.S. Army and studied to be a dental technician and attained the rank of specialist 4th class.
Upon his honorable discharge from the service, he went to Florida and was offered a management position with McCory's and then jointed Grant's. Also, he managed the Elks Club in Homestead, FL, for many years. Then in 1992, he moved to Prescott, AZ, and owned and operated a courier service until his retirement.
He summered in Bernardston and spent winters in Phoenix, AZ.
Paul was a life member of the Montague Lodge of Elks.
He loved sports especially the Boston Red Sox and the Phoenix Suns and also loved to play cribbage.
Survivors include two daughters, Cherie Friscia and her husband Patrick of Fort Lauderdale, FL, and Michelle Levin and her husband Selwyn of London, England, and grandsons, Ryan, Dylan and Justin Levin, all of London, England. Also, he is survived by his former wife, friends and caregiver, Judi (Burnham) Smith of Phoeniz; three stepdaughters, Charlene Ricketts and her husband Everett of Phoenix, Lisa Graber and her husband Wendell of Prescott and Kimberly Davis and her husband Ron of Scottsdale, AZ; five step-grandchildren, Richard Ricketts of Phoenix, Hannah and Kiersten Graber of Prescott and Parker and Alexis Davis of Scottsdale; a niece, Dr. Michelle Brown and her husband, Dr. Glenn Paige of Hickory, NC; a nephew, Gary Brown and his wife Serena of Fort Lauderdale, and several cousins.
He was predeceased by a sister, Joan (Fontaine) Brown, and brother-in-law, Leroy Brown.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Church with the Rev. Timothy J. Campoli, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.

Raymond J. Petrin
GREENFIELD - Raymond J. Petrin, 85, formerly of 232 Green River Road, died Saturday (11-24-07) at the Charlene Manor Extended Care Facility in Greenfield.
He was born in Montague on June 3, 1922, the son of Rosario J. and Mildred A. (Dickinson) Petrin.
He attended local schools in Greenfield and was a graduate of Greenfield High School Class of 1941 and also graduated from Bliss Technical School in Pennsylvania with his electricians degree.
Mr. Petrin was an electrical engineer for the Westinghouse Electric Company for over 35 years before retiring in 1983. Ray was a World War II United States Army veteran obtaining rank of Staff Sergeant. He was awarded EAME ribbon with three Bronze stars, the Good Conduct Service Medal and the World War II Victory Air Medal. He was a communicant of Holy Trinity Church and a past member of the Knights of Columbus. Ray was an avid Red Sox fan who enjoyed traveling to Florida, summer theatres and golfing.
Among his survivors he leaves his wife of 59 years the former Jean A. O'Brien; two sons, Gregory R. Petrin and his wife Shirley Rzeszutek of Bethlehen, Conn., and Thomas R. Petrin and his wife Nancy C. of Milford; a grandson, Jeffrey Petrin of New Haven, Conn., and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 8:15 a.m. at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 220 Federal St., Greenfield followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 at Holy Trinity Church with the Monsignor Ronald G. Yargeau officiating.
Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
Calling hours will be tonight from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
