Frank James Londres
January 13, 1936 ~ April 29, 2006
Frank James Londres passed away peacefully at home in South Grafton, Massachusetts, on Saturday April 29th 2006 in his 70th year surrounded by members of his loving family after a valiant battle with prostate cancer.
Born in Trenton, New Jersey, he was the son of the late Frank Joseph Londres. Frank is survived by his mother Marion Londres Wilson 101 years old of North Billerica. Frank is also survived by his loving wife Carol, his sister Kathy of California, and his children Barbara (Dan), Jeffrey (Carolyn), Gregory (Maya), Susan (Andrew), Bradley (Sonia), and Keith (Alla) as well as his step-children Elaine (Paul), and Kevin (Wil), six adoring grandchildren; James, Curtis, Harrison, Alexandra, Victoria and Jeffrey, as well as cousins and nephews, and the friends Frank made all over the world. Frank also leaves behind his loving and devoted companion Fluffy.
Frank was raised and educated in Burlington, New Jersey and at Tri-State College in Angola, Indiana, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Frank was employed by numerous prestigious companies in New Jersey and Massachusetts such as RCA, Raytheon, Honeywell, Incoterm and Geac Computers and as a natural entrepreneur formed his own companies Intermark, American World Trade, and M III. A partnering with ADA Software of Calcutta further enhanced his diverse network of international relationships, and McKinney, Texas beckoned when Convergent Software of India offered Frank the opportunity to head up their American Operations.
One of Frank's earlier innovations with his team at Raytheon of which his family is most proud and became world renowned was the design of the On Board Guidance System chosen by NASA for the Gemini and Apollo series of spacecraft. This OBGS enabled Apollo 13 to safely bring back America's astronauts from a dire mission.
Frank had many passions in life. He was an instrument rated private pilot, an avid sailor, a motorcycle enthusiast, enjoyed skiing, and was a student of astronomy.
Words that describe Frank include intelligent, creative, curious, humorous, and he was always "thinking outside the box"; and that is how he approached his battle with cancer. Refusing to accept the timeline given in Texas, it was; "Well, we'll see about that." Frank wanted to be the master of his own fate, and this was not denial. He looked at his illness as a challenge utilizing the computer and research tools and as a result he generated an extra two years, and they were good years. He embarked on an odyssey that took him across the continent visiting friends, family, and special places. He returned to Massachusetts to be closer to his family, saw the birth of grandchildren, and found a quality of life that he so valued.
The Family wishes to thank Dr. DuBois of Emerson Hospital in Concord, Dr. Lombardi formerly of Dallas, Dr. Logothetis and team at MD Anderson in Houston, and Dr. Oh and team at Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, and the multitude of caregivers who helped Frank during his long and unplanned journey.
Frank is now at peace and free of all his worldly cares and pain. He was loved, and the unique loveliness he brought into this world will be missed by all who knew him.
