John E. "Rover" O'Brien
April 30, 1952 - December 16, 2006

SHREWSBURY - John E. "Rover" O'Brien, 54, of Shrewsbury and Westborough died Saturday, December 16th at UMASS Memorial Medical Center-University Campus.

John leaves a five siblings, Elizabeth F. Rich of Shrewsbury; his twin brother, Patrick J. O'Brien, of Maine; Eileen L. Boyle of Florida; Mary A. Berkowitz of Tennessee; and Kathleen A. O'Brien of Worcester; also survived by 7 nieces and nephews, Cpl. Jillian Hayes, Allyson Rich, Colin Rich, Timothy O'Brien, Kelly O'Brien, Brett Berkowitz and Ryan Berkowitz.

He was born in Boston, Massachusetts son of the late Cornelius P. and Mary K. (Valade) O'Brien and had lived in Shrewsbury with his sister Elizabeth and her family for 11 years before moving to Westborough a year ago. He graduated from Tahanto Regional High School in 1972.

Mr. O'Brien had been employed by IFCO Company in Westborough. John was a devoted brother and uncle.

Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service for John on Saturday, December 30th at 1 P.M. in the Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, 648 Main Street, Shrewsbury. Memorial contributions in his memory can be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701 or to the American Cancer Society, Mass Division, 30 Speen Street, Framingham, MA, 01701.

Anna M. Kratt

CONWAY Anna M. (Lafavre) Kratt, 90, of Wilder Hill Road, died Saturday (7-6-2002) in Buckley Healthcare Center, Greenfield.

Arrangements, under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home, Shelburne Falls, were incomplete at press time.

Ingrid Greenburger

NEW YORK, N.Y. Ingrid (Gruttefien) Greenburger, 88, of New York died Nov. 25, 2001, in New York. She was the mother of Patric-Andre Greenburger of Colrain, Mass.

She was born in Berlin, Germany, July 14, 1913.

Greenburger was a painter, author, literary agent and foreign literary scout. A Private Treason, a German memoir, published by Little Brown in 1971, was an exploration of how she, a German gentile, came to be alienated from her own country during World War II.

Daughter of a well-known Berlin journalist, she was repelled by Nazism. She fled Germany, first to Austria, then to Dalmatia, and finally to France, where she met and fell in love with a Resistance officer. After he was killed in the last Maquis action, she and her infant son joined her sister in New York. There she married Sanford J. Greenburger, and joined the literary agency that he had founded in 1932. The Greenburgers represented, among others, the Kafka estate, Jean Paul Sarte, Albert Camus and Antoine de Saint-Exupery. They were also pioneers in literary scouting, recommending American authors to distinguished European publishers such as Rowohlt, Grasset and Feltrinelli.

After Greenburgers death in 1971, she and her son, Francis, continued to manage the agency, which remains a literary and international scouting agency in New York.

Besides her sons, she leaves six grandchildren and a nephew.

A graveside service was held Nov. 30 at Christian Hill cemetery in Colrain.

Services were under the direction of the Smith-Kelleher Funeral Home, Shelburne Falls, Mass.

Lois M. Clark

TURNERS FALLS Lois M. (Guilbault) Clark, 69, of 68 Oakman St. died Monday (12-10-2001) at the Franklin Medical Center.

Born in Montague, May 5, 1932, she was the daughter of Francis and Josephine (Bocon) Guilbault. She was educated in Montague schools, graduated in 1950 from Turners Falls High School and attended the former Northampton Commercial College.

Clark was a secretary for six years at the former Greenfield Tap & Die Corp. She later was an educational aide for the Greenfield School Department. She was the first secretary at Four Corners School, a position she held for 25 years, retiring in 1993.

She was a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Church, a member of its Catholic Womens Council, and a parish volunteer.

She enjoyed traveling, reading and volunteerism.

Survivors include her husband of 48 years, Donald H. Clark; two daughters, Donalyn J. of Berwick, Pa., and Catherine H. Kitty Mathers of Williamsburg; and a grandson.

Services will be Thursday at 9:15 a.m. from the McCarthy Funeral Home, 14 Prospect St., followed by the Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, concelebrated by the Rev. Stanley J. Aksamit, pastor, and the Rev. James Diemand. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.

Calling hours at the funeral home will be Wednesday evening from 6 to 9.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Joslin Diabetes Center, 1 Joslin Place, Boston, MA 02215, or to the Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice of Western New England, 164 High St., Greenfield, MA 01301.

Helen (Laputz) Kulak
July 31, 1919 - January 29, 2007

AUBURN, MA - Helen (Laputz) Kulak, 87, of Leicester Street, Auburn, died peacefully Monday, January 29th in Blueberry Hill Health Care in Beverly, Massachusetts.

He husband, Nicholas Kulak died in 1991. She leaves a daughter-in-Law, Frances M. Kulak of Ipswich, MA; two grandchildren, Melissa Clayton and her husband, Kevin of Harwich, MA and Roslyn Walczewski and her husband, Eric of Ipswich, MA; three great grandchildren Nicholas, Patrick and Helen; two nieces, Catherine Bergman of Auburn and Margaret McDermott of Spencer; a nephew, William Kulak of Glendale, California; also several grand nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Nicholas Kulak, and her sister, Sofie Kulak.

She was born in Worcester, daughter of the late Gregory and Fedoisa (Shillo) Laputz and had lived in Auburn for many years. She graduated from Commerce High School in Worcester.

Mrs. Kulak was a active member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Auburn where she was a member of the Choir, the Naomi Unit Women's Group the Alter Guild. Helen was an accomplished seamstress, she also loved knitting and gardening of all sorts.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Helen's family on Thursday, February 1st from 4-7 PM in the Britton-Wallace Funeral Home, 91 Central Street, Auburn. Her funeral will be held on Friday, February 2nd at 11:00 AM in the Bethel Lutheran Church, 90 Bryn Mawr Avenue, Auburn. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Auburn. Memorial donations in her memory can be made to the Bethel Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 90 Bryn Mawr Avenue, Auburn.

Anne H. Hadley

ATHOL - Anne H. Hadley, 91, died Thursday (12-6-2001) at Quabbin Valley Healthcare in Athol, where she had been residing.

Born in Athol on April 5, 1910, she was the daughter of George W. and Bertha (Ramsdell) Hall. She was a lifelong Athol resident and a 1927 graduate of the Athol High School, serving as secretary of her class.

She was the wife of the late Robert J. Hadley, president of the Athol Table Mfg. Co., who died on Oct. 1, 1977. They were married on May 22, 1933, in Winchendon, at the family home of her husbands mother.

She worked for several years as the bookkeeper and office manager for the former Arthur Tyler Co.

Hadley was a member of the Starrett Memorial United Methodist Church, Athol Historical Society, Petersham Craft Center, L.S. Starrett Camera Club, Century Club of the Athol Area YMCA and the National Audubon Society.

As a homemaker, she became accomplished in handmade braided rugs, some of which were displayed regionally. She was also experienced in a number of other crafts, including gold leafing.

She traveled extensively throughout the world, enjoying both the educational and cultural experiences.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary E. Grimes of Westminster; two sons, James R. of Ulster County, N.Y., and Jonathan H. of Orange; eight grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Margaret A. Franklin, predeceased her.

A private interment service will be held at the family plot in the Pine Grove cemetery in Templeton.

There are no calling hours.

Memorial donations may be made in her memory to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 44 Binney St., Boston, MA, 02215, or to the American Cancer Societys New England Division Office, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Fiske Funeral Home, 1356 Main St. Athol, is directing arrangements.

Mildred P. Schultz

ATHOL - Mildred Pearl (Nichols) Schultz, 73, of 22 Willis Road died Tuesday (12-11-2001) at home.

Born in Worcester, March 4, 1928, she was the daughter of Albert and Lillian (Teck) Nichols. She lived in Worcester for many years and graduated from Worcester High School. She had also lived in Auburn for many years, moved to Royalston in the 1980s and since 1996 had lived in Athol.

She was a member of the Senior Luncheon Group in Royalston.

She enjoyed gardening, cooking and animals.

Her companion of many years was Francis P. Courteau, with whom she lived.

Survivors include a son, Alan D. of Northboro; four daughters, Dianne Hogan of Burlington, Holly of Athol, Mary White of Inverness, Fla., and Mildred Thayer of Worcester; two brothers, Edmund Nichols of Clearwater, Fla., and Ernest Nichols of Carver; seven grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Higgins-OConnor Funeral Home, 146 Main St., with the Rev. Dr. Virginia E. Asel, pastor of First and Second Congregational Churches in Royalston, officiating. Burial will be in Jonas Alliene Cemetery, Royalston.

Calling hour at the funeral home will be Thursday from 10 a.m. to time of service.

Mary Eileen (Willett) Grokaitis
May 5, 1930 - September 20, 2006

Auburn - Mary Eileen (Willett) Grokaitis, 76, died Wednesday, September 20th in the Life Care Center of Auburn.
She leaves her husband of 54 years, Anthony F. Grokaitis, Jr.; her three children, Lois Marino of Oxford, Gail Chavoor and Anthony Grokaitis, III, both of Worcester; a sister, Susan Willett of Swampscott; and five grandchildren.

She was born and raised in Worcester, daughter of the late Francis and Nora (Stubbert) Willett, and has live here for more than 50 years. She graduated from St. Stephen's High School and the Salter Secretarial School, both in Worcester.

Prior to her retirement in 1991, Mrs. Grokaitis worked for 20 years for Sears in Auburn. She had also worked for the former Kenmore Trucking Company, Worcester from several years.

She was a member of North American Martyrs Church and it's Women's Club, the Auburn Lion's Club and the Auburn Senior Citizen Center.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours at the Britton-Wallace Funeral Home, 91 Central St., Auburn on Sunday, Sept. 24th from 4-7 PM. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, Sept. 25th at 10 AM in North American Martyrs Church, 8 Wyoma Dr., Auburn. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Auburn.

If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Life Care Center of Auburn Activities Fund, 14 Masonic Circle, Auburn, MA 01501.

Mable G. Babits

GREENFIELD - Mable G. (Adams) Babits, 86, of Greenfield died Tuesday (6-25-2002) at home.

Born in Deerfield, Aug. 23, 1915, she was the daughter of Carleton and Bertha (Frederick) Adams. She was educated in local public schools.

She was married to George O. Babits on June 17, 1939, in the United Church of Bernardston. Her husband of 57 years died in December 1996.

Babits was a member of St. James Episcopal Church.

She enjoyed jigsaw and crossword puzzles and cards, traveling, bus trips and watching ice figure skating.

Survivors include two sons, Phillip G. and his wife, Eva M., and Donald C. and his wife, Patricia M., all of Greenfield; a daughter, Carol A. Graves and her husband, John C., of Turners Falls; seven grandchildren, John C. Graves Jr., Scott J. Graves and spouse, Christina, Kevin M. and Andrew C. Babits, all of Greenfield, Timothy M. Graves and wife, Jennifer, of Bernardston, Kristen L. Villalvazo and spouse, Alfredo, of San Antonio, Texas, and Nicole L. Millane and husband, William, of Turners; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.

Services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at the McCarthy Funeral Home, 36 Bank Row, with the Rev. Frank Moss, rector of St. James Episcopal Church officiating. Interment will follow in Green River Cemetery.

Calling hour at the funeral home will be Friday from 9 a.m. to time of service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to either Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice of Western New England, 164 High St., Greenfield, MA 01301, or the Multiple Sclerosis Society, 101 First Ave., Suite 6, Waltham, MA 02451.
