Ruth O'Regan

CHELMSFORD - Ruth Mary (Doucette) O’Regan, of Chelmsford, Massachusetts passed peacefully on May 9, 2015.

Ruth was the loving wife of the late John P. O’Regan with whom she shared 45 years of marriage. Born on February 13, 1928 in East Boston, MA, Ruth was the daughter of the late Henry and Alice (Surette) Doucette and sister of the late Alex Doucette.

Ruth attended St. Mary’s Parochial School in East Boston and graduated from Fitton High School (Sisters of Notre Dame), Boston in 1945.

Ruth was employed from 1945 to 1954 at Mobil Oil Corporation in Kenmore Square, Boston, as Executive Secretary to the New England Division Operating Manager. She married John on October 11, 1952 at Saint Mary’s Star of the Sea Church, East Boston. After starting their family, John and Ruth moved to Chelmsford, MA in 1963 and were parishioners at Saint Mary’s Church. After raising her family, Ruth returned to work and was employed at Purity Supreme as a secretary in the main office from 1974 to 1992. After retiring, Ruth volunteered at the Chelmsford Public Library each week for the past 16 years. She enjoyed meeting with her dear Purity friends for monthly luncheons and social events.

Ruth was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed sewing clothing for herself and her daughters. She loved dancing, traveling, Tai Chi, and gardening. She was an active member of the Chelmsford Senior Center and enjoyed the dances, exercise, and bingo. However, being with her children, grandchildren and great granddaughter were her favorite moments. She enjoyed every family gathering and would be the first to arrive and the last to leave.

She leaves her five children: Anne Fratturelli, and her partner Robert Wittren, Robert O’Regan and his wife Carol, Jean Reiser and her husband Joseph, Ellen Lyons and her husband Christopher, Paul O'Regan and his wife Nancy. She also leaves eleven grandchildren: Matthew and Lauren Fratturelli; Peter and Lindsey O’Regan; Kathryn and Steven Reiser; Sarah, Stephen and Joseph Lyons; Kelly and Cameron O’Regan; and great-granddaughter Kaleigh Bradshaw.

Ruth is also survived by her loving companion of nearly ten years, Joseph Nowland of Needham, MA. He was a wonderful addition to her life and together they shared many happy times.

In November 2014, Ruth was diagnosed with ALS. She fought a courageous battle against this disease with dignity, strength and grace. Her determination to be positive got her through many dark and challenging days. Ruth was surrounded by her devoted family, friends and lifelong neighbors who have always been there for her.

The family wishes to extend our deepest appreciation to Sunny Acres Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the kind and loving care provided to our mother.

Visiting Hours will be held on Thursday from 4 to 8 pm at the Blake Funeral Home, 24 Worthen St. Chelmsford.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday at 9 o’clock at St. Mary Church, 25 North Rd. Chelmsford.

Interment will follow in Pine Ridge Cemetery, Chelmsford.

Memorial contributions may be made to The ALS Association, MA Chapter, 315 Norwood Park, South, 1st floor, Norwood, MA 02062.

Franklin Warren

CHELMSFORD - Franklin Emerson Warren, 79, a lifelong resident of Chelmsford passed away on May 9, 2015 at Life Care Center of Acton. He was the beloved husband of Mary E. (Lewis) Warren to whom he was married for over 55 years.

He was born in Lowell on May 25, 1935 a son of the late Edwin and Helen (Pearson) Warren.

Prior to his retirement in 2006, Franklin was the Animal Control Officer in Chelmsford for nearly 20 years. He worked at Eastern States/Agway for 32 years. Franklin also managed the Warren family farm, which has been in his family since 1699. He enjoyed spending the summer months in the hayfields with his family driving the same Farmall tractors used by his father in producing bales of hay. He and his wife Mary spent their time tending to the farm, from cutting brush along stonewalls to keeping the walking paths clear.

Franklin enjoyed traveling the area in his travel trailer including summer visits to Lake Willoughby in Vermont and with organized caravans with a local trailer club.

In addition to his loving wife, Franklin is survived by four children, Rebecca A. Warren and her partner Sue E. Andrews of Pepperell, Martha E. Cyr and her husband John of Biddeford, ME, Franklin M. Warren of Lowell, and David E. Warren and his wife Sally of Chelmsford; four grandchildren, Abigail S. and Emily R. Warren of Chelmsford and Adam J. and Jason R. Cyr of Biddeford, ME; a sister, Martha L. Pohl and her husband David of Chelmsford and a brother in law, David W. Lewis of Lowell.

Visiting Hours will be held on Wednesday evening from 4 to 7 pm at the BLAKE FUNERAL HOME, 24 Worthen St. CHELMSFORD.

His Funeral Service will be Thursday at 12 o’clock at the Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Pine Ridge Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Franklin’s memory may be made to the Chelmsford Land Conservation Trust, P.O.Box 216 Chelmsford, MA 01824 or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 60 Walnut St. Wellesley Hills, MA 02481.

Peter Doherty

CHELMSFORD – Peter D. Doherty, 87, of Chelmsford, passed away on Monday, May 11, 2015 at Lowell General Hospital. He leaves his loving wife of 63 years, Veronica (Durant) Doherty.

Mr. Doherty was born in Malden, Mass.on May 7, 1928 to the late Patrick and Mary Doherty of County Donegal, Ireland.

A veteran of WWII, Mr. Doherty joined the army after graduating from Malden High School. He served as a medic in Japan during the occupation. After an honorable discharge Mr. Doherty graduated from Massachusetts Trade Shops School as a radio and television technician. He later joined the Mass. Registry of Motor Vehicles where he held various positions. He was an Inspector, fatal accident investigator and hearings officer. He also managed the Registry's Lawrence office for a number of years. Mr. Doherty retired from service to the commonwealth as a member of the Mass State Police.

Before moving to Chelmsford, Mr. Doherty resided in Tewksbury for over 50 years where he was an active member of the community.

In addition to his loving wife, Veronica, he leaves his two beloved sons, Jeffrey and his wife Patricia (St. Peter) Doherty of Chelmsford and Terence and his wife Lynne (Triboletti) Doherty of Amherst, N.H. He also leaves his four adored grandchildren, Patrick and Bridget of Chelmsford and Peter and Ian of Amherst. In addition he leaves many cherished nieces, nephews and their children and grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday from 5 to 8 PM at the BLAKE FUNERAL HOME, 24 Worthen Street, CHELMSFORD. His Funeral Service will take place on Saturday at 10:30 AM at the Funeral Home. Interment will be private.

Robert Fries

CHELMSFORD – Robert (Bob) A. Fries, age 55, a longtime resident of Chelmsford and former Dunstable resident, died Thursday, May 14, 2015 at Lowell General Hospital.

Bob was born in Lowell on April 10, 1960 and was the son of J.Arno Fries of Chelmsford and the late Virginia Lee (Wooldridge) Fries. He received his education in Chelmsford schools and was a graduate of Chelmsford High School.

Bob was a very talented handyman, an avid gardener, a great cook, music lover, and an extraordinary fisherman. He also loved animals and was considered by some to be an “animal whisperer”.

Bob will be remembered for his big heart, legendary generosity and great sense of humor.

In addition to his father, Bob is survived by his two sisters, Linda J. Fries and her husband Douglas Reed of Lowell and Jennifer A. Copeland and her husband John Copeland of Boring, OR; and his many friends, especially his lifelong friend, Thomas Healy, whom the family would like to thank for his support and compassion throughout the years.

It being the family’s wish, there will be no visitation or services and interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bob’s memory to The Lowell Humane Society, 951 Broadway St., Lowell, MA 01854. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the BLAKE FUNERAL HOME, 24 Worthen Street, CHELMSFORD .

Richard Lahue Sr.

CHELMSFORD - Richard O. Lahue Sr., age 96, a long time resident of Chelmsford MA, died on May 15, 2015 at home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Dracut, MA, the fifth child of the late Harry W. Lahue and the late Ellen Grace (Omand) Lahue. He graduated from Lowell High School in 1938 and later graduated from Fitchburg State College. He taught Industrial Arts at the A.B. Constantino School in Haverhill for many years retiring in 1981.

Following his marriage to Mary Louise Spencer in January 1940, he moved to Chelmsford and has lived there since that time.

Mr. Lahue served in the U.S. Navy during W.W.II in the special Armed Guard Division manning the guns on merchant ships. He was awarded a medal from the Russian Government on both the 40th and 50th anniversary of the “Great Patriotic War 1941-1945” in recognition for making the Murmansk Run to deliver supplies to the northern city of Murmansk, Russia. He was also awarded a W.W. II Victory Medal, America Area Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Ribbon, a Good Conduct Medal and the European African Theatre Ribbon

He was a Boy Scout leader and merit badge counselor in Troop 212 of Chelmsford for many years when his sons were involved with scouts. He joined the order of the United Commercial Travelers of America in 1946 and served as an officer on many committees of this organization for more than 50 years. He has also served on many town committees including: Chelmsford Celebrations Committee, Chelmsford Historic District Commission, Chelmsford Revolutionary War Bicentennial Celebration (Chairman), Old Town Hall Restoration Committee (Chairman), Clerk of the Works for the Restoration of the Old Town Hall, Holiday Decorating Committee (Chairman), Chelmsford Historical Society (President), Chelmsford Historical Society Board of Directors, Chelmsford Historical Society Museum Trust and Museum Manager for the Barrett-Byam Homestead – The Home of the Chelmsford Historical Society for over 35 years and a Director of the Historic Adams Millstream Inc. He also served as Grand Marshall of the Town of Chelmsford’s 4th of July Parade in 1985.

He was the husband of the late Mary L. (Spencer) Lahue just short of 65 years at the time of her death in 2004. He is survived by 2 sons and a daughter, Richard Lahue, Jr. and his wife Carol of Nashua, N.H., Robert Lahue and his wife Patricia of Westford, and Mary E. Caffelle and her husband Dana of Chelmsford.

He is survived by 8 grandchildren, Scott Lahue, Leeann Lahue, Kathleen (Lahue) Boyle and her husband David, Michael Caffelle and his wife Lorin, Matthew Caffelle and his wife Carolyn, Brian Lahue and his wife Jennifer, Lori O’Rourke and her husband Neil, and Gregory Lahue and his wife Rebecca. He is also survived by 14 Great Grandchildren, Debony, and Rose Lahue, Shawn, Tyler and David Boyle, Shannon, MacGregor, Jameson, and Taylor Caffelle, Jonathan, Patrick and Benjamin Lahue, and Caitlin and Brendan O’Rourke .

He is also survived by his sister Arlene Scharer of California. He was predeceased by his sisters Barbara Little, Geneva Hill and brothers Warren Lahue and Robert Lahue.

In his later years his greatest joy was spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and his summers at Hampton Beach, N.H. He will be missed by all who knew him.

The family would like to thank the staff of Circle Home Health Care and Hospice for their kindness and care they provided over the last few weeks.

Visitation will be held at the BLAKE FUNERAL HOME, 24 Worthen Street, CHELMSFORD on Wednesday from 8:30 until 10:30 am followed by his Funeral Mass to be celebrated at 11 o’clock at St. Mary Church, 25 North Rd, Chelmsford. Interment in St. Patrick cemetery in Lowell. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Richard’s memory to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701 or to Circle Home Health Care and Hospice, 336 Central St., Lowell, MA 01852.

Joanne Philbrook

LINCOLN, NH – Joanne D. (Harvey) Philbrook, 68, of Lincoln, NH, died on Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at her daughter’s home. She was the beloved wife of Charles F. Philbrook with whom she would have celebrated their 49th anniversary on May 28th.

She was born in Lowell on October 27, 1946 and was the daughter of the late William L. and Dorothy A. (Craig) Harvey.

Joanne grew up in Chelmsford before moving to Lincoln and Woodstock, NH where for over 30 years she and her husband owned and operated the Lincoln Motel and Charlie’s Gun & Sport. She had a strong work ethic and took great pride in the family businesses. Joanne enjoyed bowling and playing Bingo. Joanne had a very generous heart and she cherished her time spent with her loving family.

In addition to her loving husband, Joanne is survived by her three children; Amy Hebert of Woodstock, NH, Kathleen Philbrook and her partner Carl Manfrates of Washington, NH, and Tracy Beaumier and her husband Robert of Lincoln, NH, five grandchildren; Amanda Meyer and her husband Gabe, Sara Hebert, Justin Perkins, and Alyssa and Ryan Beaumier, brother William F. Harvey and his wife Sharon of Tyngsboro, and several nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Visiting hours on Wednesday from 4 to 7 pm at the Blake Funeral Home, 24 Worthen St., Chelmsford.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 11 o’clock at St. Mary Parish, 25 North Rd., Chelmsford.

Interment in Pine Ridge cemetery will take place at a later date.

Philip Gately

CHELMSFORD - Philip J. Gately, 78, a longtime resident of Chelmsford and former resident of Natick passed away on Sunday, April 26, 2015 with his family by his side. He was the beloved husband of Nancy (Hansberry) Gately to whom he was married 54 years.

He was born in Waltham on March 9, 1937 a son of the late William and Agnes (Hennebury) Gately. He attended school in Natick and went on to receive his Bachelor’s Degree by attending Boston College at night for fourteen years. Philip also served in the Army National Guard and was honorably discharged in 1961.

Prior to his retirement in 1994, Philip worked as a purchasing manager for Raytheon Corp. where he had been employed for more than 40 years.

Philip was a parishioner of St. Mary Church and a past Grand Knight with the Knights of Columbus in Andover. He was the past president at the Longmeadow Golf Club in Lowell where he enjoyed a round of golf or a hand of 45’s. Philip loved to drive and take his wife Nancy on trips to Florida, Saratoga Raceway and Atlantic City. Above all, Philip loved to meet new people and engage in conversation, often offering his advice to others. He never missed an opportunity to make new friends and will always be remembered for his outgoing personality.

In addition to his loving wife, Philip is survived by four daughters, Pamela McClure and her husband Robert of St. Mary, GA, Kathleen Shartzer and her husband Jeffrey of Bedford, NH, Nancy Hauman and her husband Kirk of Tyngsboro and Jennifer Wetmore and her husband Joe of Hudson, NH; 10 grandchildren and three great grandchildren; a brother and two sisters, Peter Gately and his wife Phyllis, Catherine Rizzo, and Marcella McKay and her husband Richard and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Philip is predeceased by two brothers and a sister, William Gately, Bernard Gately and Theresa Waldron.

Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday evening from 4 to 8 pm at the BLAKE FUNERAL HOME, 24 Worthen St. CHELMSFORD. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday at 11 o’clock at St. Mary Church, 25 North Rd. Chelmsford. PLEASE MEET AT CHURCH. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.

Frank Desort Jr.

MERRIMACK, NH – Frank J. Desort, Jr. 75, of Merrimack, NH, and former resident of Chelmsford, MA, passed away peacefully on May 20, 2015 at the Community Hospice House in Merrimack, NH surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Suzanne E. (Dorkin) Desort with whom he celebrated 50 years of marriage in the summer of 2014.

Frank was born in Maple Ridge, PA on October 2, 1939 and was the eldest son of the late Frank J. Desort, Sr. and Lillian (Booza) Desort.

Frank was raised in Pennsylvania and earned a BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 1961 and a MS in Electrical Engineering from Northeastern University in 1968. He spent his career as an electrical engineer working in radar engineering in the defense industry.

Prior to his retirement in 2000, Frank was employed at Raytheon Corporation and was a member of the IEEE. Frank was a communicant of the Parish of the Resurrection in Nashua as well as a longtime parishioner at St. Mary’s Parish in Chelmsford. Frank was an avid golfer, participating in the Zeus League and the Raytheon Retirees League at Green Meadow Golf Club in Hudson, NH. He was a past coach for the Chelmsford Little League. Frank enjoyed boating, fishing and skiing with family in the White Mountains, traveling, wintering in Florida, and cheering for all the New England sports teams. Above all, Frank enjoyed spending time with his family.

In addition to his loving wife, Frank is survived by his son Steven Desort and his companion Kathleen Mathews of Merrimack, NH, daughter Michele Seghezzi and her husband Mark of Scituate, six grandchildren; Kayla and Kacey Desort, Morgan, William, Olivia, and Matthew Seghezzi; sister-in-law Candace (Barthalow) Desort of Maple Ridge, PA; and three nephews, Edward Desort and his wife Vicki (Unger) and their children, Robert Desort and his wife Sherry (Marcinko) and their children, and Scott Desort, along with many cousins in PA. He was the brother of the late Edward V. Desort and Christine L. (Desort) Crivello.

Visiting hours on Tuesday from 4 to 8 PM at the Blake Funeral Home, 24 Worthen St., Chelmsford.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11 o’clock at St. Mary’s Parish, 25 North Rd., Chelmsford, MA.

Interment will follow in Heart Pond Cemetery, Chelmsford.

James Purtell

CHELMSFORD - James P. Purtell, 93, a longtime Chelmsford resident passed away Saturday May 23, 2015. He was the beloved husband of Helene M. (Caligandis) Purtell with whom he celebrated 70 years of marriage in October. He was active resident of Palm Center Nursing Home in Chelmsford.

Born October 8, 1921, he was the son of the late Patrick and Mary (Brandon) Purtell.

James proudly served his country in the United States Navy during WWII and was a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Prior to his retirement, James had worked for the Boston and Maine Railroad for 43 years.

He was an avid reader and always enjoyed a good game of chess.

He was a parishioner of St. Mary’s Parish, Chelmsford.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children; Jim Purtell and his wife Beverly of Chelmsford, George Purtell and his wife Mary of Westford, and Dan Purtell of Chelmsford. He is also survived by his granddaughter Lauren Purtell of Waterville Valley, NH.

Visiting hours will be held Thursday morning from 8:30-10:30 at the BLAKE FUNERAL HOME, 24 Worthen St., CHELMSFORD. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 o’clock at St. Mary’s Parish, 25 North Rd., Chelmsford, MA. Interment in Pine Ridge Cemetery, Chelmsford. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to his favorite charity, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
