Robert B. Viator, 73

Osterville - Robert B. Viator, 73, owner of Osterville Electric Motor Service, died Monday, Nov. 30,1998 at the Center for Optimum Care in Mashpee.

He was the husband of Lydia (Mattson) Viator.

Born, raised and educated in Gloucester, Mr. Viator worked briefly at Gorton Pews in Gloucester before joining the Merchant Marine and serving during World War II.

After the war, Mr. Viator married and moved to North Quincy. There, he worked as an electric motor repairman at Hancock Electric Motor Service, where he later became the owner.

Mr. Viator moved to Rockland in 1960 and to Osterville in 1976, where he started Osterville Electric Motor Service.

He sold Hancock Electric Motor Service in 1977 and retired in 1990.

Mr. Viator enjoyed woodworking, horseshoes, bowling and dominoes and was a Mason at John Cutler Lodge in Abington.

Surviving besides his wife are two sons, Ronald Viator of Kingston and Robert B. Viator Jr. of Hanson; two daughters, Peggy Craig of Rockland and Patricia Bloomberg of Mashpee; two sisters, Muriel Fleet and Priscilla Barner, both of Gloucester; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A graveside service was held in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.

Mary E. West, 88

Hyannis - Mary E. (Bullock) West, 88, a retired teacher, died Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998 at the Mayflower Place in West Yarmouth.

She was the wife of the late Harold W. West.

Born and raised in Arlington, Mrs. West graduated from St. Peter's School in Cambridge, Arlington High School and Fitchburg Normal School.

Mrs. West taught at the Crosby School in Arlington. Shortly after her marriage in 1940, she settled in Hyannis where she taught for many years at Hyannis East Elementary school until her retirement in 1975.

She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Church and the Retired Teachers Association.

She enjoyed traveling.

Surviving are a son, Thomas W. West of Centerville; four daughters, Pauline Franke of Grand Haven, Mich., Frances A. Liberis of West Hartford, Conn., Patricia Carney of Smithfield, R.I., and Barbara J. Curley of Quincy; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was held at Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home, Hyannis, with a Mass of Christian burial in Our Lady of Victory Church, Centerville. Burial followed in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.

Memorial donations may be made to the Cape Cod Times Needy Fund, P.O. Box 550, Hyannis, MA 02601.

Edward C. Burlingame, 71

Hyannis - Edward C. Burlingame, 71, a lifelong Cape resident and former truck driver, died Tuesday, Dec. 8, 1998 at Cape Cod Hospital.

Born in Cotuit, Mr. Burlingame was a Navy veteran of World War II. He had worked for Hinckley Lumber Co. in Hyannis as a truck driver and he was also a chef at the 213 Room in Hyannis.

Mr. Burlingame was an avid bingo player.

He is survived by three daughters, Susan Johnston of South Yarmouth, Carol Souza of Seekonk, and Linda Fair of Yarmouthport; four sons, Edward C. Burlingame Jr. and Steven P. Burlingame, both of South Yarmouth, Brian Burlingame of Florida, and Jeremy Sanders of Hyannis; three brothers, Roger Burlingame of Cotuit, Carlton H. Burlingame of West Yarmouth, and Calvin A. Burlingame of Hyannis; a sister, Marlene Frazier of Hyannis; his former wife, Loretta West of South Yarmouth; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held in the West Barnstable Cemetery.

Marie T. Costa, 94

West Hyannisport - Marie T. Costa, 94, a longtime Cape Cod resident and retired businesswoman, died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998 at her home.

Miss Costa was born in St. Michaels, the Azores. She came to the United States in 1919 and settled in New Bedford. She attended beauty school in New Bedford and later opened Marie's Beauty Salon in West Hyannisport, which she operated until retiring in the mid-1970s.

A winter resident of Florida for many years, Miss Costa was a communicant of Our Lady of Victory Church in Centerville.

She enjoyed her cats, gardening, playing the violin, sewing, music, sculpting and painting.

Miss Costa is survived by two nieces and one nephew.

A funeral was followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Victory Church, Centerville. Burial was in Beechwood Cemetery, Centerville.

Anne P. Halliday, 98

Osterville - Anne Pillow Halliday, 98, a pioneer in social work with children, died Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998 at Cape Regency Nursing Home in Centerville.

Born in Memphis, Tenn., she was a graduate of Madiera School and Vassar College, with a masters degree in social work. Ms. Halliday pursued her career in the Kentucky mountains, Baltimore, Philadelphia and Washington state.

A longtime summer visitor to the Cape, she moved to her family's summer home in Osterville in the 1950s. She was the Cape's first social worker for troubled and needy children, and for some time was the only person doing this work in Barnstable County.

Ms. Halliday was an avid outdoorswoman. Her favorite sport was horseback riding and she also liked sailing, canoeing, hiking, bicycling and camping. She also enjoyed reading and the theater. After her retirement, she continued her interest and involvement in Osterville matters.

Surviving are two nephews, William P. Halliday IV of Memphis and Edwin Wick Halliday of Columbia, Tenn.

A gathering of family and friends was held at Ms. Halliday's home in Osterville.

Burial was private.

Memorial donations may be made to the Osterville Public Library, Wianno Avenue, Osterville, MA 02655.

William H. Kenney, 73

West Barnstable - William H. Kenney, 73, a former auditor and postmaster in South Yarmouth, died Monday, Dec. 14, 1998 at the New England Medical Center in Boston.

He was the husband of Therese (Hanlon) Kenney.

Born in Medway, Mr. Kenney was a 1942 graduate of Medway High School. He moved to Hyannis in 1969 and was a resident of West Barnstable since 1977.

A decorated and disabled World War II Army veteran, he served with the 194th Timberwolf Division.

Along with a real estate career in Medway, Mr. Kenney served as a selectman for 13 years. After moving to the Cape, he was an auditor for the U.S. Post Office and was postmaster in South Yarmouth for several years. He retired in 1988.

Mr. Kenney was a member and past president of the St. Joseph's Men's Club and the Medway High School Alumni Association and served with many other civic and charitable organizations in Medway. He was also a member of the Barnstable Quarterback Club, Barnstable Hockey Club and the Retired Postmaster Association.

Surviving besides his wife are three sons, Dean Kenney of Bedford, N.H., John W. Kenney of Marstons Mills and William H. Kenney Jr. of Needham; six daughters, Mary Jane Hodgson of Newbury, Pa., T. Gail Bozzi of Roslindale, Shelia D'Olimpio and Susan Collopy, both of Centerville, Carol Ramirez of Edgewater, N.J., and Colleen Russo of Goffstown, N.H.; a brother, P. Joseph Kenney of Medway; 20 grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of Victory Church, Centerville.

Theodore M. Loumiotis, 73

Centerville - Theodore M. Loumiotis, 73, died Sunday, Dec. 13, 1998 at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis.

He was the husband of the late Sophia (Papoulias) Loumiotis.

Born in Parnasos, Greece, he immigrated to Dorchester from Greece in 1967 and moved to Centerville in 1982.

Mr. Loumiotis worked as a clothing merchant in Greece and worked in a clothing factory in Boston while living in Dorchester. After moving to the Cape, he worked at the Barnstable Road Getty Gas Station.

He was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Centerville.

Surviving are three sons, Peter Loumiotis of Barnstable, Chris Loumiotis of Los Angeles and Marinos Loumiotis of Hyannis; two brothers in Greece; and six grandchildren.

A funeral service was held at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, Centerville. Burial was in Mosswood Cemetery, Cotuit.

Memorial donations may be made to St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 1130 Falmouth Road, Centerville, MA 02632.

Aili Niemi, 84

Centerville - Aili Niemi, 84, a retired housekeeper; died Monday, Dec. 14, 1998 at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis.

Born in Carver, Miss Niemi was raised in Wareham and attended Wareham public schools.

Miss Niemi moved to Hyannis in 1928, where she worked as a housekeeper for more than 40 years for the late C.M. Chase, a former Barnstable town clerk. She then became the companion and housekeeper for Virginia Fuller in Osterville until her retirement in 1995.

She had been a resident of the Cape Regency Rehabilitation and Nursing Center and was a former member of the South Congregational Church, both in Centerville.

She is survived by a brother, Onni Niemi of Centerville, and three nieces and a nephew.

A graveside service was held in Beechwood Cemetery, Centerville.

Bernard V. O'Neill, 74

Marstons Mills - Bernard V. O'Neill, 74, former circulation manager for the Cape Cod Standard-Times, died Saturday, Nov. 21, 1998 at his home.

Born in New London, Conn., he attended St. Francis Seminary in Staten Island, N.Y.

Mr. O'Neill worked as the circulation manager at the Cape Cod Standard-Times and was a claims adjuster for several insurance agencies in Boston. He later served as the southeast regional representative for Seminole Point Alcoholic Rehabilitation Hospital in New Hampshire.

Mr. O'Neill was a longtime resident of the Cape.

Surviving are his mother, Katherine A. O'Neill; a brother, Dr. Daniel J. O'Neill of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in St. Mary Star of the Sea Church in New London, Conn. Burial followed in St. Mary Cemetery.

A memorial service was held at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Osterville.

Lois R. Walker, 73

Hyannis - Lois R. (Ryder) Walker, 73, died Sunday, Dec. 6, 1998 at Cape Cod Hospital after a long illness.

She was the wife of the late John Edward Quinlan and the late Joseph B. Walker.

Born and raised in Barnstable, Mrs. Walker was a 1943 graduate of Barnstable High School.

A Cotuit native, she was a member of the Cotuit Federated Church and its choir.

Mrs. Walker enjoyed arts and crafts.

She is survived by four sons, Michael C. Quinlan of Marstons Mills, Edward A. Quinlan of South Dennis, and Dennis P. Quinlan and John W. Quinlan, both of Hyannis; an adopted son, Justin R. Walker of South Yarmouth; two brothers, W. Clayton Ryder of Florida and Allen B. Ryder of North Carolina; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; an aunt; and several cousins.

Graveside services were private.
