Dieter H. Sussdorf, 68

Barnstable - Dieter H. Sussdorf, 68, a retired immunologist, professor of microbiology and associate dean, died Thursday, Nov. 19, 1998 at his home after a brief illness.

He was the husband of Eleanor R. Sussdorf.

Mr. Sussdorf was born in Germany and came to the United States in 1950. He lived in Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y., for 30 years before moving to Barnstable. He received a Ph.D. in microbiology at the University of Chicago.

Mr. Sussdorf was an associate professor of microbiology at Cornell University Medical College and associate dean of Cornell University Graduate School of Medical Sciences. He retired in 1995 to Barnstable.

He was an avid traveler and gardener, an award-winning photographer and a gourmet cook.

Mr. Sussdorf was a member of the Friends of the Sturgis Library.

Surviving besides his wife are three daughters, Claudia Sussdorf of Fredericksburg, Va., Wendy Sussdorf Pires of Carlisle, Pa., and Ellen Sussdorf Massee of Los Angeles; and three grandchildren.

A funeral service was held at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Barnstable. Burial was in Lothtop Hill Cemetery, Barnstable.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Cape Cod, 923 Route 6A, Yarmouthport, MA 02675.

Kevin M. Boyle, 41

Eastham - Kevin Michael Boyle, 41, died unexpectedly Sunday, Dec. 6, 1998 at his home.

He was the partner of Alan W. Petrucelli, contributing editor of The Barnstable Patriot's arts and entertainment section, for 17 years.

Born in Pottsville, Pa., Mr. Boyle was raised in Philadelphia and Barnesville, Pa., and was a 1976 graduate of Marian High School. He received a bachelor of arts degree from Temple University in 1980.

Mr. Boyle moved to Manhattan and began a career as a Broadway publicist. Among his many credits was the Tony Award-winning show The Tap Dance Kid. He founded and operated PR+, a public relations firm specializing in corporate communications.

In 1994 Mr. Boyle graduated with high honors from The Dorothea Hopfer School of Nursing at Mount Vernon Hospital and received academic awards in clinical and scholastic areas. He worked at White Plains Medical Center.

Mr. Boyle had lived in Provincetown and most recently in Eastham. He worked at Cape End Manor, Cranberry Pointe, Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care Pavilion and Hospice of Cape Cod.

He enjoyed traveling to France, Italy and the Virgin Islands.

Surviving besides his partner are his mother, Teresa M. (Purcell) Boyle of Barnesville; and a brother, Richard D. Boyle of New York City.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Memorial donations may be made to the Animal Rescue League, Box 1265, Brewster, MA 02631; or to Hospice of Cape Cod, 923 Route 6A, Yarmouthport, MA 02675.

Winslow F. Childs, 74

West Barnstable - Winslow F. "Buster" Childs Jr., 74, died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis after a brief illness.

He was the husband of Esther L. (Davidson) Childs.

Born in Osterville, he was educated in Barnstable schools.

Mr. Childs worked as a caretaker for private estates in Osterville and Cotuit before working for the Cemetery Department of Structures & Grounds for the town of Barnstable. He retired in 1988.

Surviving besides his wife are a son, David Childs of Wilmington, N.C.; a daughter, Barbara Theberge of Hyannis; five grandchildren; an uncle; two aunts; and several cousins.

A graveside service was held at Crocker Park Cemetery, West Barnstable.

Memorial donations may be made to the First Lutheran Church, Route 6A, West Barnstable, MA 02668; or to the West Barnstable Rescue Squad, Route 149, West Barnstable, MA 02668.

Ollis C. Dinsmore, 83

Osterville - Ollis C. Dinsmore, 83, retired Army master sergeant, died Monday, Nov. 30, 1998 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.

He was the husband of the late Catherine R. (Tarpey) Dinsmore.

Born and educated in Haverhill, he lived in Bedford from 1962 to 1972, when he moved to Osterville.

A retired Army master sergeant, Mr. Dinsmore served for 20 years, serving in both World War II and the Korean War. He retired in 1962.

Surviving are a daughter, Carol Bagarella of North Falmouth; two sons, James J. Dinsmore of Hyannis and Dennis P. Dinsmore of Osterville; and four grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Elizabeth Seton Church, North Falmouth. Burial was in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.

Memorial donations may be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, 295 Devonshire St, 4th floor, Boston, MA 02110; or to the C-O-MM Volunteers Ambulance Fund, 875 Falmouth Road, Centerville, MA 02632.

Patricia J. Flaherty, 60

Hyannis - Patricia J. (Hoey) Flaherty, 60, a registered nurse, died Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998 at her home after a long illness with lung cancer.

Born in Auburn, Mrs. FIaherty was raised and educated in Worcester and graduated from St. Peter's High School. She also graduated from Quinsigamond College School of Nursing and received a master's degree from Cambridge College.

She also attended the Rhode Island School of Design and was an accomplished artist

A registered nurse, Mrs. Flaherty worked for the Pocasset Mental Health and the Cape Counseling Center. She was very active on the Cape in the treatment and counseling of alcoholics and substance abusers.

Surviving are a brother, John R. Hoey of Shrewsbury; two sisters, Nancy A. Gaffney of Worcester and Jacqueline F. Walter of the British Virgin Islands; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass was held at St. Francis Xavier Church, Hyannis.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Notre Dame Cemetery, Worcester.

Paul F. Furey, 82

Hyannis - Paul F. Furey, 82, a recipient of the Silver Star for Gallantry in Action, died Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998 at the Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care Community-Pavilion after a long illness.

He was the husband of Mary T. {Tait) Furey, who died in March.

Born in Lowell, Mr. Furey was raised and educated in Montreal, Canton, Ohio, and Springfield and lived in Hyannis since 1980.

In 1941, he enlisted in the Army and served with Company B of the182nd Infantry Regiment of the American Division.

Mr. Furey was the recipient of the Silver Star for Gallantry In Action against the Japanese at Cebu, Philippines and the Presidential Unit Citation of the Navy.

He was a member of the Dennis F. Thomas Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2578 in Hyannis and the American Division Club of Cape Cod.

Surviving are three nieces and a nephew.

A graveside service was held in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.

Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Joanne Laver, 88

Osterville - Joanne (Thomas) Laver, 88, died Monday, Nov. 30, 1998 at her home.

She was the wife of F. Walter Laver, who died in 1984.

Born in Utica, N.Y., Mrs. Laver attended schools there and married in 1927. She worked for many years as an officer for her husband's business, F. Walter Laver & Sons, Inc.

Mrs. Laver was a member of the Grace Episcopal Church in Utica and its St. Hilda's Guild, the Willoughby Golf Club in Stuart, Fla., and a former member of the Yahnundasis Golf Club, Coral Ridge Yacht Club of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Fort Schuyler Club. She was also active in the St Luke's Hospital Auxliliary.

Surviving are a daughter, Janet Laver Ehart of Osterville; a son, Fred W. Laver of Palm City, Fla.; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and several nephews and a niece.

She was a twin of the late J. Watson Thomas.

A memorial service was held at the Grace Episcopal Church in Utica, N.Y. Burial was in Forest Hill Cemetery.

Waldo W. Sears, 82

Centerville - Waldo W. Sears, 82, founder of the oldest Jeep dealership in the United States, died unexpectedly Monday, Nov. 30, 1998 at his home.

He was the husband of Irene (Rousseau) Sears.

A lifelong resident of the Cape, Mr. Sears was born and educated in Sandwich and had lived in Centerville since 1954.

In 1938, Mr. Sears founded Sears Auto Sales in East Sandwich, which became a Jeep dealership in 1946, the oldest in the United States. He retired in 1978.

Mr. Sears also worked on the construction of the Sagamore Bridge and served in the Civilian Conservation Corps and in the Work Progress Administration.

He was a director of the Massachusetts State Auto Dealers Association and an avid automobile collector.

Surviving besides his wife are a daughter, Christine M. Sylvia of Centerville; a son, Myron "Ron" J. Sears of Marstons Mills; seven grandchildren; a great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held at the John Lawrence Funeral Home, Marstons Mills. Burial was in Mosswood Cemetery, Cotuit.

Memorial donations may be made to the C-O-MM Ambulance/Rescue Fund, 875 Falmouth Road, Centerville, MA 02632.
