Helen (Zappas) Jenks

Wakefield.

Helen (Zappas) Jenks age 71 former wife of the late William Jenks of Wakefield died Friday morning in Salem Hospital following a brief illness.

She was born in Peabody and raised in Salem the daughter of Catherine (Polemenako) Zappas Mento of Marblehead, and the late John Zappas. At the age of six, her father died. Her mother later remarried to John Mento and together they raised Mrs. Jenks and her sister. She was graduated from Salem High School in the Class of 1951 and remained active with the class serving on the reunion committee planning and attending many of the reunions over the years. Following her graduation from high school, she married her husband and began their family. While raising their children she became active in many activities including the Girl Scouts, serving as a Girl Scout Leader. Mrs. Jenks was a passionate sailor and avid boater. She would take many family camping trips and participate in all lakefront and water activities.

Having grandchildren was one of Mrs. Jenks greatest joys. A wonderful and devoted grandmother, she attended all of her grandchildren’s school activities and sporting events.

In addition to her mother, Mrs. Jenks is survived by two children John “Jay” Jenks of Wakefield and Elaine and her husband Curtis White of Salem; two grandchildren Nathaniel and Lydia White of Salem; a sister Mary Zappas of Salem; several nephews and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Her Funeral will be held Monday at 9:15 A.M. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North St) Salem to be followed by Funeral services at 10:00 A.M. in St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, Peabody. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours Sunday from 4 to 8 P.M. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem. Robert L. Howie

Marblehead...

Robert Lawrence Howie of Marblehead, beloved husband of Alma Martin Howie for more than 60 years, died at his home on November 24 after a brief illness. He was the son of the late E. Lawrence Howie and Florence Tadgell Howie, and the bother of the late Donald E. Howie. Born in Salem, he attended Salem and Marblehead Schools, graduating from Marblehead High School in 1941. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II, where he specialized in the use of carrier pigeons to fly encrypted messages along the coast. He received a degree in law and business from Northeastern University and was a graduate of the School of Savings Banking at Brown University. He retired as Senior Vice President in 1987, and as a Corporator in 1998 of the Salem Five Cents Saving Bank where he served for 34 years.

He was an active member of St. Michael’s Church, Marblehead, serving as Senior Warden, Treasurer and in many other positions for the past 50 years. He served on the Board of the Essex County Health Association for 27 years, and for many years on the Advisory Committee of the Seamens Widow and Orphans Association of Salem. He was a Proprietor of the Boston Athenaeum. He was an accomplished and award-winning artist, wood carver, model builder, fisherman, hunter, and conservationist. He was rated an expert marksman. In recent years he traveled extensively with his wife and children, visiting Holland and Belgium just last April.

Known affectionately as “Captain Bob”, he was devoted to his family. He leaves his wife Alma, daughter Carol H. Eldridge, son Robert L. Howie Jr., their spouses Kenneth M. Eldridge and Marian W. Howie, all of Marblehead, a sister Edith L. Crossley of Houston, seven grandchildren (Susan E. Forker, Amy E. Robertson, Sarah E. Francis, Elizabeth W. Howie, Alexandra L. Howie, John R.R. Howie, Madison A. Howie), and eight great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be held from 4:00-7:00 P.M. on November 29 at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, Marblehead. A funeral mass will follow at the church on November 30 at 11:00 A.M. Interment will be in the adjacent churchyard. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mr. Howie’s name to St. Michael’s Church Archives, a national treasure which was his passion for 30 years.

Mary Kucker

Salem...

Mary Kucker age 88 of Salem died unexpectedly in Salem Hospital Monday December 27.

Born in Salem the daughter of the late Felix and Anna ( Wahwa) Kucker she was educated in Salem Schools. Following her education, Miss Kucker became employed by Sylvania on Loring Ave in Salem. She continued her employed with G.T.E Sylvania on Loring Ave, with over 30 years of employment until her retirement. A member of the Quarter Century Club at Sylvania she enjoyed travel, especially of Las Vegas and Atlantic City and was an avid Bingo player. Miss Kucker also enjoyed frequent shopping trips into Boston visiting stores such as Filene’s and Jordan Marsh.

She is survived by a sister Amelia Kucker with whom she resided and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers, Peter, John and Steve Kucker and two sisters Katherine Corrao and Esther Petrowicz.

Her funeral will be held Thursday at 10:00 A.M. in the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North ST) Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visitation will be immediately before the funeral from 9:00 A.M. to 10:00 A.M. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery. Mary E. “Betty” (Daly) Moon

Mary E. “Betty” (Daly) Moon age 86 of Beverly, formerly of Danvers, died Thursday December 23 in the Montserrat Nursing Home following a long illness.

Born and raised in Newark, N.J. the daughter of the late Joseph and Margaret (Lawrence) Daly, Mrs. Moon began her education in New Jersey. Her family moved to Woburn, Ma where she completed her education and graduated from Woburn High School. Mrs. Moon then became a mother’s helper for a brief time. She then became employed in area restaurants as a waitress until retiring in her mid 50’s. Mrs. Moon was fascinated with angels, enjoyed traveling taking trips in her car especially to Salisbury Beach and the Carolinas to visit her family. She was also a very active participant in the Kaylos Program for several years and had been publicly recognized for her attendance.

Mrs. Moon is survived by a daughter Margaret F. “Peg” and her husband Robert L. Kent of Beverly; two granddaughters Theresa Ann Lincoln of South Carolina and Virginia Marie Baird of North Carolina; seven great grandchildren Matthew, Adelphi, Christopher and McKenon Lincoln all of South Carolina, Katrina, Elizabeth Ann and Joseph Davis Baird all of North Carolina and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a great-granddaughter Julia Ann Lincoln, two brothers Joseph and Bernard Daly and a sister Dorothy Thomas.

Her Funeral will be held Wednesday Jan 12 at 9:00 A.M. in St. Mary’s the Annunciation Church, Danvers. Interment will be in Cavalry Cemetery, Woburn at the family’s request there are no visiting hours. Jane Pearce Bauer

Jane Pearce Bauer, of Marblehead, wife of Frederic M. Bauer, with whom she shared 44 years of marriage, died at her home December 26, 2004.

Born in Mount Airey. Pennsylvania in 1923, she was the daughter of Ellis M. and Gertrude (Bowden) Pearce. Throughout her childhood Ms. Bauer was a regular summer visitor to her family’s property in Marblehead. After marriage, she and her husband resided in Fort Washington, Pa., until 1973, when they built a home on the Marblehead property.

A 1941 graduate of Ambler, Pa. High School, Ms. Bauer’s family roots go deep into the 17th and 18th-century history of Marblehead. Her ancestors were from the Orne, Goodwin and Swett families. She is a direct descendant of Joshua Orne Bowden, and Samuel Bowden, Drummer of the Seventh Company, Glover’s Marblehead Regiment.

An accomplished musician, Ms. Bauer was the first woman ever accepted as a private student by Marcel Tabuteau, principal oboist of the Philadelphia Orchestra. She also studied English horn with John Minsger, of the Philadelphia Orchestra. While serving as executive secretary to the President of Standard Pressed Steel Co., Jenkintown, Pa., Ms. Bauer performed as first chair oboist of the Olney Symphony, The Old York Road Symphony, and Bucks County Symphony orchestras. After moving to Marblehead, she became first chair oboist of the Salem Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Cape Ann Symphony. She was principal oboist and one of the original founders of Symphony-by-the-Sea.

Ms. Bauer was an avid sailor, who could often be seen in Marblehead waters at the helm of the family tug boat, “Tootsie.”. She was a member of the Boston Yacht club.

She is survived by her husband, Frederic M. Bauer, of Marblehead, a nephew, Reverend John E. Pearce, of Barnegat Light, N.J. a nephew, Dale Pearce Conner, of Laurel, Maryland, and a niece, Jane Pearce Conner, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

A memorial service is planned for January 8, 2005 at 11:00 A.M. in Abbott Hall, Washington St., Marblehead. Joanne M. “Toby” McGlone

Salem

Joanne M. “Toby” McGlone, age 68 of Salem died Monday morning following a long illness. She was the wife of Richard “Doc” McGlone, Sr., with whom she would have celebrated 50 years of marriage on March 23, 2005.

Born in Salem the daughter of the late Edward “Hawk” and Virginia (Hall) Ronan, she was raised in Salem and educated at St. James School. Mrs. McGlone was an accomplished athlete playing both basketball and volleyball. For over 30 years she was a Nurse’s Assistant at Salem High School helping in the care of many students until her retirement in 2001. A dedicated mother and wife, Mrs. McGlone had an unconditional love for people. She lived her life caring for family and the students of Salem High School as well as her many friends.

She was a longtime member of the L.A.O.H. Division 18 in Salem. In addition to her husband, Mrs. McGlone is survived by five children Richard and his wife Carolyn McGlone of Peabody, Randall McGlone of Lynn, Russell McGlone of Salem, Robin McGlone of Salem and Robert and his wife Jackie McGlone of Palmer; three brothers Peter Ronan and Joe Ronan both of Salem and Wayne Ronan of Quincy; two sisters Kay Harrington of North Hampton, New Hampshire and Norma Eon of Salem; 10 grandchildren Kari, Michelle, Russell, Eric, Kristen, Lauren, Sean, Ryan, and Kyle McGlone and Amber Robinson; one great grandchild Faith Lee Dominguez and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two brothers James and Edward "Hawk" Ronan Jr.

Her Funeral will be held Friday at 9:15 A.M. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North St) Salem to be followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 A.M. in St. James Church, Salem. Edward J. Eddie” Mullen

Salem

Edward J. Eddie” Mullen age 88 husband of the late Phyllis (Hunt) Mullen of Salem, died unexpectedly Thursday December 23 in Salem Hospital. He was predeceased by his first wife Eleanor (Sullivan) Mullen.

He was born in Marblehead, the son of the late Lewis and Gertrude (Holden) Mullen Sr. . Mr. Mullen was educated in Marblehead Schools. In his youth Mr. Mullen attended the Teen Age C.C Camp in Lost River New Hampshire. Mr. Mullen served in the United States Army Seventh Infantry Division. During his tour of duty Mr. Mullen received the Infantry Combat Badge and the Bronze Star in Okinawa. A life member of the V.F.W Post 2005 in Marblehead he was also a life member of the D.A.V Witch City Post 84.

Following his discharge, Mr. Mullen was employed by the General Electric Company in Lynn for 35 years in the Medium Steam Turbines, Building 64 as a machinist until retiring in the mid 1970’s. He had enjoyed camping, boating and fishing as well as bowling.

Mr. Mullen is survived by three sons David and his wife Jan Mullen of Salem, Retired North Conway Police Chief Robert and his wife Barbara Mullen of Senecca, South Carolina and Donald Mullen of Saugus; a brothers Harry Mullen of Gilbert, Arizona; eight grandchildren Patrick, David, Melissa , Sean, Adam, Scott, Elizabeth and Stefana Mullen; 12 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother Lewis Mullen Jr. and a sister Helen Mullen.

His Funeral will be held Monday, Jan 3 at 10:00 A.M. in the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North St) Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Harold C. Weingartner

Marblehead

Harold C. Weingartner, age 86 husband for 62 years to Ruth (Diels) Weingartner of Marblehead died Wednesday December 29. He was fondly known as “Bapa” to his grandchildren and family.

Born in Aurora, Illinois he was the son of the late Albert C. and Minnie (Mehlhorn) Weingartner.

Harold received his chemical engineering education at the University of Illinois , in Champagne, IL. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering with distinction in 1939 and in 1940 his Masters of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering with distinction. While at the University of Illinois, Mr. Weingartner was a member of the fencing team from 1937 to 1939. He had received his Varsity Letter and served as team Captain in 1939.

His professional background includes working with the National Defense Research Commission developing aerosol munitions and responsibility for field trials. He also served as a consultant to the Naval Research Laboratory and the Army Chemical Corps. Harold and his wife Ruth married in 1942 and moved to Boston shortly thereafter to working for the National Research Corp. (NRC) in Cambridge. His nine year career with the NRC culminated with four years serving as Vice President and General Manager of its Equipment Division. During this time he and his wife had settled in their treasured home in Marblehead and began their family.

A few years later, Harold decided to test other scientific markets and moved his family with precious family resistance to Bryn Athen, PA to head a new department at the consulting firm of Welling and Woodard. After a year and a half trial period he moved his family back to their Marblehead home, which had been rented and not sold. At the same time he found his life’s work and became a consulting engineer for AD. Little Inc. in Cambridge, Ma. Harold thrived and worked closely with many clients including Anhauser Busch, Beechnut, Lommus, Hess, and others who highly valued and sought after his advice until his retirement in 1984. He was also a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

Harold was an accomplished pianist. During all of this time he would play in the morning and the evening and especially enjoyed playing duets. IN his home there were two pianos, one more dedicated to Bach and the other to Beethoven. He would travel to play in concerts at the Marlboro Festival of Music in Vermont and also sang in the Beethoven Choral Fantasy at the Marlboro College Music Festival. When he resided in Pennsylvania, he a would regularly play a piano and cello duet, a tradition that was continued long distance for many years after he returned to Marblehead. He also sang in the Clifton Lutheran Church Choir for years.

Mr. Weingartner was a dedicated and active member of the Clifton Lutheran Church. and had helped to establish the current Church facility. He was elected twice as the President of congregation and had served on many committees including the Worship committee. A Sunday School teacher, he also taught vacation bible school and enjoyed socializing with all the members of the congregation. After Sunday services it was not unusual for Mr. Weingartner to play the church organ.

A wonderful husband and best friend to his wife, he was always encouraging Ruth with her incomparable artistic endeavors. He built a studio for Ruth to paint in with a “North Light”. He then moved his Steinway grand piano into the studio and spent hours playing Back, Mozart and Beethoven in this sanctuary while she painted. As he and his wife enjoyed their home they also shared a passion for gardening.

In addition to his wife Mr. Weingartner is survived by a son John L. Weingartner and his wife Mary Johnson Weingartner of Merrimacport; a daughter Kristin Watson of Victoria, British Columbia; three grandchildren Amanda Watson of Victoria British Columbia and Katherine and Matthew Weingartner of Merrimacport, and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers Erwin and Walter Weingartner. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a memorial service Mon Jan 3 at 10:00 A.M. in the Clifton Lutheran Church, 150 Humphrey St., Marblehead. AT the family’s request there are no visiting hours. Burial will be private.

Rev. Karen Lynn (Sewell) Badolato

Salem, Massachusetts

Rev. Karen Lynn (Sewell) Badolato. age 49, of Salem, formerly of Towson, Maryland, wife for 28 years of Rev. Louis Badolato, Jr. died early Saturday morning.

Born in Baltimore, Maryland the daughter of Calvert and Jacquelyn (Emmerich) Sewell of Towson, MD, Rev. Badolato was educated at Towson High School and Towson State University.

Following her education, she and her husband married in 1976 and shortly thereafter began their family. At the same time, Rev Karen Badolato had become the Director of the Hiding Place, in Baltimore, MD, a center for pregnant women in crisis. Later, she became the Administrator of the Rock Church Academy, a Kindergarten to 12 grade school Baltimore for several years.

She was an ordained minister, sharing a team ministry with her husband. In 1996 she and her husband, along with their daughter, Kristen, moved to the Ukraine for two years. During this time, she served in Kiev as a missionary with her husband evangelizing and establishing churches.

In 1998 the family returned to the United States and settled in Salem establishing the North Shore Rock Church and still continued long distance missionary work for the Ukraine . Also, until present she and her husband have maintained their team ministry serving as co Pastors of the North Shore Rock Church. During this time Rev. Karen Badolato also spent two years as Principal of the Essex Christian Academy.

Devoted and dedicated to her family and children, Rev. Badolato was also a spiritual mother to many with her sense of dedication of compassion to all. She is well known for her for her generous giving of herself , being thoughtful of other and always taking care of people. She was devoted to her faith and the Lord Jesus Christ. In addition to her husband and parents, Rev. Badolato is survived by two children Matthew and his wife Jessica Badolato of Wayne, PA and Kristin and her husband Andre Ebersole of Beverly; two brothers Bruce Sewell of Baltimore, MD and Kevin and his wife Jan Sewell of Bakersfield, CA; two sisters Cheryl Davis of Baltimore, MD and Sandy and her husband Michael Coulsen of Baltimore, MD; her mother and father in law Louis and his wife Ann (Hewitt) Badolato, Sr. of Baldwin, MD; many niece and nephews and was anticipating the arrival of her first granddaughter in April.

Relative and friends are respectfully invited to Funeral Services Wed, Jan 5, at 10:00 A.M. in the North Shore Community Baptist Church, 9 Hart St., Beverly, Ma.. Visitation will be Mon and Tues from 4 to 8 P.M. in the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North ST) Salem. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Building Fund of the Rock Church of Shosnokov in the Ukraine, c/o the North Shore Rock Church, 13 Britannia Circle, Salem, Ma. 01970.
