Kathleen Ann Virk, 40

Hyannisport - Kathleen Ann (Furey) Virk, 40, a department store worker, died unexpectedly Friday, Sept. 25, 1998.

She was the wife of Som Virk.

Mrs. Virk was born in Hazelton, Pa., and graduated from Marian Catholic High School in 1976. In 1980 she graduated from Marywood College in Scranton, Pa. She moved to East Dennis from Lansford, Pa., in 1983 and then to Hyannisport in 1993.

Mrs. Virk had worked for Macy's department store in Hyannis for the past 14 years.

She was a member of St Francis Xavier Church, Hyannis.

Besides her husband, she is survived by her parents, Lawrence J. Furey and Ann (Kilroy) Furey of East Dennis and Lansford Pa.; three brothers, Lawrence M. Furey of Boston, Michael G. Furey of Lansford, and Patrick G. Furey of Havertown, Pa.; and two sisters, Mary Patricia Furey of Buffalo, N.Y., and Ann M. Kiceluk of Marstons Mills; and several nieces and a nephew.

The funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Cape Church in Brewster was followed by burial In Oak Ridge Cemetery, South Dennis.

Mary C. Bruen, 95

Hyannis - Mary C. Bruen, 95, who leaves a sister in Centerville, died Wednesday, Sept. 30, 1998 at the Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care Manor in Hyannis.

Born in Boston, she lived in Newton for many years and moved to Hyannis several years ago.

She worked for the city of Newton as a clerk in the Welfare Department until her retirement.

She is survived by a sister, Rita B. McLean of Centerville; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Philip Neri Churchill Waban.

Hester E. Byrnes, 85

Cambridge - Hester Elizabeth (Goldstein) Byrnes, 85, who leaves a daughter in Hyannis, died Sunday, Sept. 27, 1998 at the Mediplex of Weymouth.

She was the wife of Harold C. Byrnes, who died in 1974.

Born and educated in Boston, she moved to Cambridge in 1952 from Boston. She was a shipping clerk at Sears and Roebuck from 1928 to 1947 and then a switchboard operator at Claus Gelotte Inc. from 1956 until her retirement in 1980.

Following her retirement, she was a part-time secretary at Grace Methodist Church in Cambridge for many years and was a member of the board of directors of the Just A Start Corp. in Cambridge.

Mrs. Byrnes was a member of the Repertoire Theater Company and the Rebecca Lodge, both in Cambridge, the Boston and Cambridge PTAs and the Cambridge Club. She was a member of Grace Methodist Church in Cambridge, where she sang in the choir, and attended South Yarmouth Methodist Church when visiting her family on the Cape.

She was a volunteer at polling places in Cambridge for many years and was an accomplished practitioner of various arts and crafts.

Surviving are two daughters, Lora E. Barley of Hyannis and Flory C. Cardiner of Douglas; a sister, Maxine L. Warren of Cambridge; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held at South Yarmouth Methodist Church, South Yarmouth.

Rita A. Drew, 82

Hyannis - Rita Ann (Burke) Drew, 82, a former CCD teacher at St. Francis Xavier Church, died Friday, Oct. 2, 1998 at Cape Cod Hospital after a long illness.

She was the wife of William L. Drew III for 59 years.

Born in Brockton, she was raised in Hyannis and graduated from Barnstable High School.

Mrs. Drew worked for Scudder and Taylor Oil Co. in Hyannis and also for Sign of the Whaler, a gift shop in Hyannis.

She retired in 1975 after 28 years of work.

She was a charter member of the Junior Women's Club of Hyannis and a member of the Couples Club at the Federated Church, also of Hyannis.

After her retirement, she enjoyed traveling and spending time in Florida as well as reading and music.

Surviving besides her husband are a sister, Alice Lorrett of Hyannis, a brother-in-law, Henry G. Hamelin of Whitman, and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Francis Xavier Church, Hyannis. Burial followed in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Joslin Diabetes Center, 1 Joslin Place, Boston, MA 02215; or to the American Heart Association, 2 White 's Path, South Yarmouth, MA 02663.

Edna Lillian Goffin, 92

Port St. Lucie, Fla. - Edna Lillian Goffin, 92, died Friday, Sept. 18,1998.

She was born in Boston, and her family moved to Centerville when she was two years old.

She had been a resident of Port St. Lucie, Florida for the past 11 years.

Mrs. Goffin worked for several firms in Hyannis as well as at Camp Edwards during World War II.

She was a member of the Osterville Baptist Church.

She enjoyed card games as was an avid Scrabble player.

Survivors include daughters Geraldine Bachman of Port St. Lucie and Alma Victoria Sousa of Mesa, Ariz.; a sister, Miss Ester Flinkman of Centerville; 15 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held next June.

Timothy Hartnett, 41

Barnstable - Timothy M. Hartnett, 41, a fisherman, died of a heart attack Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998 at his home.

Born in Bronxville, N.Y., he was raised in Chatham, graduating from Chatham High School.

He also lived in Orleans before moving to Barnstable several months ago.

Mr. Harnett was a fisherman, sports fisherman and shellfisherman, working out of Chatham. He also formerly worked at the Chatham Yacht Basin.

He attended St. Joseph's Church in Barnstable and was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous.

Surviving are two sons, Timothy M. Hartnett Jr. and Peter L. Hartnett both of Harwich; his former wife, Catherine Bogue of Harwich; three brothers, William Hartnett, Joseph Hartnett and Christopher Hartnett, all of New York; a sister, Meg Gonsalves of Florida; many aunts and uncles; and three nephews and a niece.

A memorial service was held at the Chatham Methodist Church, Chatham. Burial was in New York.

Edythe B. Kennedy, 73

Barnstable - Edythe Bartles Kennedy, 73, a homemaker and dog breeder, died Tuesday, Sept. 29, 1998 at the Greenery Rehabilitation Center in Hyannis.

She was the wife of WiIliam B. Kennedy since 1945.

Born and educated in Providence, R.I., Mrs. Kennedy was a longtime resident of Riverside, R.I., and a summer resident of Block Island before moving to Barnstable in 1973. She was a former aide in the special needs department of the East Providence school system.

An active breeder of English setters and, more recently, of Shih-Tzus, she was a member of the Providence County and Cape Cod Kennel clubs as well as the American Shih Tzu Club. Her many interests included crafts, gardening, cooking and traveling. She also hosted a support group for stress and anxiety.

Besides her husband, she is survived by her mother, Ruth B. (Hodgkins) Munro of Rumford, R.I.; a son, Barry Kennedy of Hyannis; a daughter, Nancy B. Till of Plainfield, N.J.; a brother, Joseph B. Munro of Westport, Conn.; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held at the Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, Sandwich. Burial was private.

Memorial donations may be made to the Hospice Association of Cape Cod, 923 Route 6A, Yarmouthport MA 02675.

Ellen B. Leonard, 63

Centerville - Ellen B. (Benner) Leonard, 63, a Cape resident since 1980, died Tuesday, Sept. 29, 1998 at the Greenery Rehabilitation & Skilled Nursing Center in Hyannis after a brief illness with cancer.

She was the wife of Louis M. Leonard.

Born and raised in Springfield, she was a graduate of the McDuffee School for Girls in Springfield and a 1956 graduate of Lassall Junior College in Newton.

Mrs. Leonard had a long career in public relations in the home furnishings and fashion industry beginning in the early 1960s in New York City. She was a vice president for James Fox Associates, fashion public relations manager for DuPont, and merchandising, promotion and publicity representative of Harper's Bazaar magazine. Since 1990, she was a customer service representative for BayBank and BankBoston.

While working in New York City, Mrs. Leonard was a resident of New York City as well as Riverside, Conn., and Greenwich, Conn.

She moved to the Cape in 1980 and lived in the Scraggy Neck Section of Cataumet, in Osterville and in Centerville.

She was an avid golfer and gardener and enjoyed art and history.

Surviving besides. her husband are two stepsons, Lt. Cmdr. Michael K. Leonard of Seattle and Martin L. Leonard of New Caanan, Conn.; a stepdaughter, Susan L. Healey of Reading; two grandchildren; and several nieces.

Funeral services were private.

Memorial donations may be made to the Centerville-Osterville-Marstons Mills Rescue Squad, 1875 Route 28, Centerville, MA 02632.

Thomas O. Tisdell, 55

Marstons Mills - Thomas O. Tisdell, 55, custom leather worker, died Thursday, Oct. 1, 1998 at his home after a long illess.

Mr. Tisdell was raised and educated in Quincy and was a graduate of North Quincy High School.

After high school, he moved to Boston.

At one time he owned and operated the Tisdell Sandal Shops in Harvard Square, Provincetown and Key West.

Mr. Tisdell was known as a creative designer in custom leather work and had his work featured in craft books. He most recently worked in his own business as a tile contractor.

He enjoyed painting in watercolors and was an avid surf caster at Dowses Beach in Osterville.

He is survived by his son, Bladen C. Tisdell of Cotuit; his mother, Claire A. Tisdell of Winter Park, Fla.; three brothers, Gerald P. Tisdell of Davie, Fla., Charles W. Tisdell of College Park, Fla., and Philip P. Tisdell of Altamonte Springs, Fla.; two sisters, Barbara Spatzer of Winter Park, Fla., and Teresa Demary of Hyannis; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were private.
