LEOMINSTER- Ervin D. Johnson, 74, of 204 Prospect St., died Thursday, March 28, in the Highlands in Fitchburg after a long illness.
He leaves his wife of 53 years, Audrey J. (Fitzgerald) Johnson; two sons, Ervin D. Johnson Jr. of Shirley and Robert C. Johnson of Leominster; a sister, Marilyn L. Foley of Stratham, N.H.; a granddaughter; many nieces and nephews. He was born in Leominster, son of Earl A. and Pearl E. (Crosby) Johnson, and graduated from Leominster High School in 1945. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
Mr. Johnson was a lineman at Massachusetts Electric Co. for 38 years, retiring as a crew leader in 1989.
He was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church, Wilder Lodge of Masons, and Leominster Lodge of Elks.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, in Silas F. Richardson & Son Funeral Home, 106 West St. Burial will be private. GRAFTON- Joseph M. Kates, 38, of 8 Keith Hill Road, died Saturday, March 23, at home after being stricken ill.
He leaves his wife, Pamela (Blake) Kates; a son, Jack Kates, at home; his parents, William J. and Margaret (McGuire) Kates of Norwood; two sisters, Amy Kates of Cotuit and Janet Murphy of Plymouth; four brothers, William Kates Jr. of Marshfield, Jerry Kates of Attleboro, Ken Kates of Greenwich, Conn., and Jim Kates of North Hampton, N.H.; and many nieces and nephews. He was born and raised in Norwood and lived five years in Grafton. He graduated from Xaverian Brothers High School in Westwood. He graduated from the Unviversity of Massachusetts in Amherst, and he received a master's degree from Indiana University School of Business.
Mr. Kates was a vice president at Fidelity Investments in Boston.
He was an avid John Deere enthusiast and collector, and he enjoyed golf and playing chess.
The Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 27, in St. James Church, 89 Main St., South Grafton. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery. Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, in Robert C. Roney Funeral Home, 152 Worcester St., North Grafton. WORCESTER -- Alice F. (Moran) Kelly, 90, formerly of 1199 Main St. and formerly of Milton, died Friday, March 22, in Notre Dame Long Term Care Center.
Her husband of 45 years, Walter A. Kelly, died in 1988. She leaves two sons, Dr. John P.W. Kelly of Woodbridge, Conn., and Dr. W. David Kelly of Worcester; three grandchildren; nephews and nieces. She was born in Boston, daughter of Michael and Mary (Leary) Moran, and was raised in Charlestown. She lived in Hyde Park and Dorchester before moving to Milton in 1956 and to Worcester in 1995. She graduated from Charlestown High School.
Mrs. Kelly was a social worker for the city of Boston. She was past president of Boston College High School Mothers Guild; a volunteer at the Carroll Center for the Blind in Newton; a member of the Milton Democratic Town Committee and Blessed Sacrament Church; and a former member of St. Pius X Parish, Milton.
The funeral will be held Monday, March 25, from Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., with a Mass at 11 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Church, 555 Pleasant St. Burial will be private in Milton Cemetery. WORCESTER -- Victor E. Konde, of Manor Street, died Friday, March 29, at home.
He leaves his wife of 45 years, Demetria "Meta" (Mitrush) Konde; three sons, Richard Conde of Spencer, Stephen Conde of Worcester and Christopher Conde of New Braintree; a sister, Annette Fortinallis of Boston; three grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Two sisters, Tafta Flessas of Boston, and Florence Mazza of Dedham, predeceased him. He was born in Boston, son of Theodore and Olympia (Pilla) Konde. He attended Boston schools.
Mr. Konde owned and operated the former Tech Spa on Park Avenue for 12 years. He later worked from 1975 to 1994 as a foreman at the Worcester Regional Transit Authority. He was a member of the Amalgamated Transit Workers Union, and St. Mary's Assumption Albanian Orthodox Church.

EAST HARWICH- Walter Kulesza, 76, of 19 Sugar Hill Drive, formerly of Worcester, died Monday, March 25, in St. Vincent Hospital, Worcester, after an illness.
He leaves his wife of 57 years, Pauline (Brown) Kulesza; a son, Gerald P. Kulesza of Eastham; a daughter, LuAnne Tribastone of Worcester; two sisters, Genevieve Gulbicki and Anna Zybas, both of Worcester; six grandchildren; a great-grandson; nephews and nieces. A son, Walter F. Kulesza, died in 1967. Two brothers, Stanley and Frank Kulesza, and three sisters, Mary Libuda, Veronica Albe and Josephine Kosnick, also predeceased him. He was born in Worcester, son of Peter and Catherine (Kopaniarz) Kulesza, and moved to East Harwich 10 years ago. He graduated from Commerce High School and attended College of the Holy Cross, both in Worcester. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific.
Mr. Kulesza was a lieutenant in the Worcester County Sheriff's department for more than 30 years, retiring in 1980. He previously was an assembler and blacksmith for Crompton & Knowles, Worcester, retiring in 1967. He was a member of Worcester Lodge of Elks 243, Polish Naturalization Independent Club, Polish American Veterans Club and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in West Boylston; co-founder and past president of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in Worcester and a member of its Boston chapter; past president of the State Association of Polish American Citizens Club; and manager of the Crompton & Knowles Softball Team. He loved to dig clams and fish.
The funeral will be held Wednesday, March 27, from O'Connor Brothers Funeral Home, 592 Park Ave., Worcester (www.oconnorbrothers.com), with a Mass at 9 a.m. in Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 600 Cambridge St., Worcester. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, Worcester. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, in the funeral home. Hannah E. Kulju, 99

OULU, Finland- Hannah E. (Airaksinen) Kulju, 99, formerly of Ashby, Mass., died Sunday, March 24, in Oulu.
Her husband of 53 years, Andrew Kulju, died in 1987. She leaves two sons, Juoko Kulju of Ashby and Seppo Kulju of Hampton, N.H.; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. She was born in Nilsia, Finland, and lived in Canada, Brooklyn, N.Y., and Maynard, Mass. She lived in Ashby for many years, and moved to Haapavesi, Finland, in 1989.
Mrs. Kulju was a personal cook, and enjoyed gardening and berry picking. She enjoyed needlework, and stitched for most of her life.
She was buried in Haapavesi on Saturday, March 30.

TEMPLETON- Laura F. (Proto) LaFortune, 68, of 18 Old Athol Road, died Tuesday, April 2, in UMass Memorial Medical Center - University Campus, Worcester.
She leaves her husband of 50 years, Richard P. LaFortune; four sons, Richard T. LaFortune of Templeton, Thomas A. LaFortune of Largo, Fla., Steven A. LaFortune of Athol and Gregory J. LaFortune of Gardner; two daughters, Valerie A. Wheeler of Warwick, R.I., and Deborah J. Richard of Templeton; three sisters, June Chouinard of Clinton, Lorraine Harmon of Concord and Shirley Poudrette of Leominster; 17 grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. She was born in Princeton, daughter of Anthony and Amelia (Hannah) Proto, and lived several years in Winchendon before coming to Templeton in 1967. She graduated in 1951 from Lancaster High School.
Mrs. LaFortune assisted her husband in his businesses. She enjoyed antiquing and working on the computer.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 6, in Fletcher-Hebert Funeral Home, 70 Pleasant St., Winchendon. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery. MILFORD- Roland H. Lambert, 75, of Gibbon Ave., a World War II veteran and retired machinist, died Friday, March 29, in Milford-Whitinsville Regional Hospital.
He leaves his wife of 35 years, Marguerite F. "Peggy" (Hixon) Lambert; two sons, Robert P. Spencer of Oahu, Hawaii, and Paul B. Lambert of Hopedale; two daughters, Linda J. Clinton of Bellingham and Donna M. LeClair of Colchester, Vt.; a brother, Ernest A. Lambert of Milford; two sisters, Blanche Lee of Mendon and Annette Lussier of Hopedale; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. A daughter, S. Kim Spencer Brock, died in 1990. A brother, William Lambert, also predeceased him. He was born in Uxbridge, son of William and Blanche (Lajoie) Lambert, and lived many years in Milford. He attended Uxbridge High School and was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Philippines, Asia and the Pacific.
Mr. Lambert was a machinist at Whitin Machine Works, Whitinsville section of Northbridge, and at ATF Davidson Co. for 46 years, retiring in 1989. He was a longtime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1385, Uxbridge, and a former member of Uxbridge Eagles. He attended St. Mary's Church. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and was a baseball fan.
The funeral service, with full military honors, will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 3, in Buma-Sargeant Funeral Home, 42 Congress St. Burial will be in Vernon Grove Cemetery. LEOMINSTER- Torino Lanciani, 89, formerly of Sterling, a World War II veteran, died Sunday, March 24, in Fairlawn Nursing Home, after an illness.
He leaves five brothers, Thomas Lanciani of Frankfurt, Germany, Albert and Robert Lanciani, both of Everett, Alfred Lanciani of South Yarmouth and Raymond Lanciani of Stoughton; nephews and nieces. Two brothers, Augustine and Edward Lanciani, predeceased him. He was born in Boston, son of Andrew and Rachela (Giannangelo) Lanciani, and lived in Sterling before moving to Leominster six years ago. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a sergeant in North Africa, Italy, Germany and the South Pacific.
Mr. Lanciani worked for more than 25 years at Norton Company in Worcester, where he was a member of the 25 Year Club. He was a member of St. Richard's Church in Sterling.
The funeral will be held on Tuesday, March 26, from Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Road, Fitchburg, with a Mass at 11:30 a.m. in St. Richard's Church, 4 Bridge St., Sterling. Burial will be in Bourne National cemetery in Bourne. Calling hours are 9:30 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 26, in the funeral home.
