Thomas J. Flynn, 75

WORCESTER -- Thomas J. Flynn, 75, formerly of 67 Green Hill Parkway, a World War II veteran, died Tuesday, March 26, in Veterans Administration Hospice Homestead, Fitchburg, after a long illness.
He leaves two brothers, David F. Flynn of Silver Springs, Md., and Michael W. Flynn of East Greenwich, Conn.; a sister, Mary A. Spasaro of Worcester; nephews and nieces. He was born in Worcester, son of Michael and Mary (Power) Flynn, and lived many years in Worcester. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
Mr. Flynn was a laborer for the city of Worcester in the Public Works Department. He also worked at Hahnemann Hospital and Lincoln Nursing Home. He was a member of American Legion Post 193, Winchendon, and a sports fan.
The funeral will be held Tuesday, April 2, from Callahan Brothers Funeral Home, 61 Myrtle St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Bernard's Church, 228 Lincoln St. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 1, in the funeral home. Please omit flowers.
Louis J. Forand, 97

FALLSTON, Md.- Louis J. Forand, 97, of Fallston, formerly of Webster, Mass., and Worcester, died Monday, March 25, at home.
His wife, Julia L. (Fleming) Forand, predeceased him. He leaves a daughter, Lois F. Shabe of Fallston; a brother, Rev. Bernard J. Forand of Superior, Wis.; a sister, Beatrice Forand Mutter of Southwick, Mass.; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; several nephews and nieces. He was born in Webster, son of Francois and Emelie (Rondeau) Forand, and lived in Worcester before moving to Maryland in 1987.
Mr. Forand worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. for 30 years, serving as an agent in Worcester, and was in the Honor Club and Presidents Club. He had previously been a shoe cutter for the Klevins Shoe Co. in Spencer, Mass.
He was a member of St. Mark's Church in Fallston, and was an avid bowler.
The funeral Mass was held Wednesday, Feb. 27, in St. Mark's Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hartford Hospice, 8003 Corporate Drive, Suite G., Baltimore, MD 21236. McComas Funeral Home, Abingdon, is directing arrangements.
George E. Fortin, 75

WORCESTER -- George E. Fortin, 75, of Esther Street, a veteran of two wars, died Friday, March 22, in the Life Care Center of Auburn after a short illness.
He leaves three cousins, Jacquelyn M. Henry of Worcester, Robert J. Foley of Westminster, and Peter E. Foley of Leominster. A sister, Jane C. Agbay of Worcester, died many years ago. He was born in Worcester, the son of George L. and Margaret (Foley) Fortin, and lived in Oxford, Grafton, and Worcester. He graduated from Oxford High School in 1945, and was an Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War.
Mr. Fortin was a shipper at the Coca-Cola Company in Westboro and Worcester for 24 years, retiring in 1993.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 92 in Grafton and the Teamster's Union Local 170 in Worcester.
The graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 27, in North Cemetery, Oxford. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Oxford Emergency Medical Services, 181 Main St., Oxford, MA 01540. NORTHBRIDGE- Maynard J. Gagnon, 81, of 305 Cooper Road, a veteran of World War II, died Monday, March 25, in Milford-Whitinsville Regional Hospital, after he was stricken ill.
He leaves his wife of 28 years, Marion (Dion) Gagnon; two brothers, Richard Gagnon of Fort Fairfield, Maine, and Donald Gagnon of Presque Isle, Maine; three sisters, Mildred Wolfe of Odenton, Md., and Beulah Spaulding and Bernice Allen, both of Bangor, Maine; nephews and nieces. Three sisters, Dora J. Pryor of Presque Isle, Maine, Muriel Faucher of Norwalk, Conn., and Isamay Johnason of Lakeland, Fla., predeceased him. He was born in Eagle Lake, Maine, son of Ubald and Madeleine (Fournier) Gagnon, and lived in Hartford, Conn., before moving to Northbridge in 1974. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a sergeant in Italy.
Mr. Gagnon was a painting supervisor for Carabetta Enterprises in Meriden, Conn., for 15 years, retiring in 1990. Before that, he was a painting contractor for several years at Croscup Inc. in Hartford, and a machinist at Pratt & Whitney in East Hartford. He was a member of St. Peter's Church, the Northbridge Council on Aging, Local 481 International Brotherhood of Painters and Allied Trades in Hartford, and the Disabled American Veterans in Worcester.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 28, in Turgeon Funeral Home, 80 School St. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Whitinsville section of Northbridge. A funeral Mass will be held at a later date. A calling hour will be 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, March 28, in the funeral home. Frances R. Gardella, 85

WORCESTER -- Frances R. (Andresano) Gardella, 85, of 64 Chilmark St., long active in her church, died Monday, March 18, at her home, after a short illness.
Her husband, Leo J. Gardella, died in 1967. She leaves a son, former Worcester Police Chief Edward P. Gardella of Worcester; three daughters, Elizabeth M. Gardella, Frances D. Lockwood and Agnes T. "Missy" Lucier, all of Worcester; a brother, Rocco Andresano of Tuscon, Ariz.; and two sisters, Jennie Cinquemani of Tuscon and Pauline Lacasse of Auburn; four grandchildren; a great-grandchild; nieces and nephews. Three brothers, Vincent, Andrew and Frank Andresano, and two sisters, Anna Rinaldi and Nina Hamelin, predeceased her. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Ralph and Nicoletta (Astrella) Andresano, and graduated from Commerce High School.
Mrs. Gardella worked in the Department of Environmental Management in the division of rinks and pools, retiring in 1985. She was also a police matron for the city of Worcester. She was a life member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel-St. Ann Church; a member of its Women's Guild and bocce league; past officer of its Golden Age Club; a volunteer at church functions; founder and first president of Sacred Heart Academy Mother's Guild; and a member of Maria S.S. Addolorata Women's Biscegliese Society and the State, County and Municipal Employees Association. She was active in democratic city affairs and politics, working as a polling warden.
The funeral will be held Thursday, March 21, from Arthur S. Manzi & Son Funeral Home & Garden Chapel, 179 Shrewsbury St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Mount Carmel-St. Ann Church, 24 Mulberry St. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. MELBOURNE, Fla.- Vernon F. Gates, 88, of Melbourne, died Sunday, March 24, in the end stage of Alzheimer's disease.
He leaves his wife of 67 years, Eleanor G. Gates; a daughter, Judith A. Bissett of Northboro, Mass.; two sons; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. A sister predeceased him.
Mr. Gates worked for 40 years at the Waltham Automotive Corp. of Waltham, Mass. He was a member of the Masons AF&AM of Massachusetts.
A calling hour will be held 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, in Fountainhead Memorial Home, 7303 Babcock St., Palm Bay, with a service at 2 p.m. in the chapel. WORCESTER -- Loida "Cuca" Grajales, 41, of 67 Oread St., died Wednesday, March 20, in UMass Memorial Medical Center - Memorial Campus.
She leaves her mother, Felicita (Roman) Grajales of Worcester; eight brothers, Jose A., Abraham, Samuel, David and Eliezer Grajales, all of Worcester, Eliud, Ananias and Natanael Grajales, all of Puerto Rico; six sisters, Abigail, Elba, Fela and Ruth Grajales, and Juana Naranjo, all of Worcester, and Iris Grajales of Puerto Rico; many nieces and nephews. A sister, Maria G. Grajales of Worcester, died in 1984. She was born in Canobanis, Puerto Rico, daughter of the late Jose Grajales. She graduated in 1981 from Burncoat High School.
She enjoyed music.

YORBA LINDA, Calif.- Gloria M. (Pelton) Gravell, 76, formerly of East Brookfield, Mass., died Thursday, March 21, in Anaheim.
She leaves her husband of 57 years, Milton G. Gravell; six sons, Ernest Gravell of Chino, David Gravell of Corona, Bruce Gravell of Ogden, Utah, Raymond and Robert Gravell, both of Kingman, Ariz., and Kenneth Gravell of Yorba Linda; three sisters, Virginia Cardone and Gail Arsenault, both of Leominster, Mass., and Nancy Thibodeau of Gardner, Mass.; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. A sister predeceased her. She was born in Leominster, daughter of Paul and Doris Pelton, and later lived in East Brookfield, before moving to California.

SPENCER- Roland O. Groleau Sr., 89, of 10 Lakeview Drive, a retired wire drawer and spinner, died Wednesday, March 27, in The Meadows of Leicester.
His wife of 67 years, Beatrice J. (Boudreau) Groleau, died Nov. 3. He leaves three sons, Roland O. Groleau Jr. of Charlton, Donald R. Groleau of North Oxford and John R. Groleau of Spencer; three daughters, Janet D. Clarke of West Brookfield, Gabrielle T. Sumner of Spencer, with whom he lived, and Claire E. Gingell of Pasco, R.I.; 19 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. He was born in Worcester, son of Pierre and Delia (AuClair) Groleau, and lived here 40 years.
Mr. Groleau was a wire drawer and spinner at G.F. Wright Steel & Wire Co., Worcester, where he worked 35 years, retiring in 1977. He was a member of St. Mary's Church and volunteered for the Spencer Nutrition Program. He enjoyed playing bingo and was a sports fan.
The funeral will be held Friday, March 29, from J. Henri Morin & Son Funeral Home, 23 Maple Terrace, with a Liturgy of the Word at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, 60 Maple St. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. WORCESTER -- Violet L. Hardy, 90, formerly of 48 William St., died Thursday, March 21, in Shrewsbury Nursing Home.
She leaves a niece, Sharon A. Pichierri of Worcester; two nephews, John C. Orstrom of Fort Myers, Fla. and James S. Orstrom of Millbury. A sister, Lorna V. Orstrom of Worcester, predeceased her. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Elijah J. and Ida (Fleming) Hardy, and graduated from Commerce High School.
Miss Hardy worked 51 years at Freedom Federal Savings in Worcester, retiring as assistant treasurer.

LEICESTER- Walter W. "Bucky" Harris, 90, of 1075 Main St., died Saturday, March 23, in The Meadows of Leicester.
His wife, Kathalyn "Kitty" (Bostock) Harris, died last year. He leaves a son, Richard A. Harris of Spencer; a daughter, Linda R. Squire of Provincetown; a sister, Norma Benjamen of Hudson, Fla.; three grandchildren; a niece and several nephews. A sister, Ruth Mowry, predeceased him. He was born in New Britain, Conn., son of William and Orra (Viall) Harris, and lived most of his life in Leicester. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He graduated from Leicester High School, where he was a standout basketball player.
Mr. Harris was a machinist at Coes Knife Co. in Worcester for 15 years, retiring in 1985. He previously worked at Wyman Gordon Co. for 25 years.
He was a member of the Rochdale Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7556, and Cherry Valley American Legion Post 443. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Rochdale, and was a former volunteer for FISH (an interfaith social service group) in Leicester and the Leicester Nutrition Program. He was a former corporator of Leicester Savings Bank, and was a member of Spencer Lodge of Masons. He was also a commissioner of Pine Grove and Rawson Brook cemeteries, as well as former superintendent of Pine Grove cemetery for 12 years.
The memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 2, in Christ Episcopal Church, 1089 Stafford St., Rochdale. Burial will be in Pine Grove cemetery at the convenience of the family.
