Mauro DiBenedetto, 85

WORCESTER -- Mauro G. DiBenedetto, 85, of 1 Lyman St., Westboro, formerly of 5 Benedict Road, a construction financial officer, died Friday, March 22, in Deaconess-Waltham Hospital after a brief illness.

His wife of 56 years, Lucy A. (Mingolla) DiBenedetto, died in 2000. He leaves three sons, Peter M. DiBenedetto of McKinney, Texas, Michael P. DiBenedetto of Raynham, and Dr. David J. DiBenedetto of Charlestown; eight grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. Two brothers, Nicola and Patrick DiBenedetto, and six sisters, Rose Ferrante, Mary Amoruso, Grace Ferranto, Helen Monopoli, Theresa Abascia and Angie Mastrototoro, predeceased him. He was born in Worcester, son of Pietro and Rose (DePinto) DiBenedetto, and graduated from North High School. He received a bachelor's degree from Syracuse University in 1948. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. DiBenedetto was chief financial officer more than 15 years for the Caprera Construction Co., retiring in 1982. He previously had worked for Bayer-Mingolla Co.

He was a member of St. Margaret Mary Church and the Chapter 4 Disabled American Veterans South Works Post. He was an avid fisherman, and was a member of the Shackwie Striper's Club and New England Fly Tyers Association.

The funeral will be held Tuesday, March 26, from Mercadante Funeral Home & Chapel, 370 Plantation St. (www.mercadantefuneral.com), with a Mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Margaret Mary Church, 75 Alvarado Ave. Entombment will be in Notre Dame Mausoleum. Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 25, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Tower Hill Botanical Gardens, 11 French Drive, Boylston, MA 01505.

Harriet E. Dionne, 80
Tuesday, March 26, 2002

FITCHBURG- Harriet E. (Smith) Dionne, 80, formerly of 16 Prichard St., a former stitcher, died Sunday, March 24, in Birchwood Care Center after an illness.

Her husband, Ovila J. Dionne, died in 1965. She leaves three daughters, Cheryl Godin of New Mexico, Jeanne Dionne of Cape Cod and Ann Fenner of Leominster; a brother, Carl Smith of Shirley; three grandsons; nieces and nephews. She was born in Fitchburg, daughter of George and Helen (Cuddy) Smith, and graduated from Fitchburg High School in 1939.

Mrs. Dionne was a stitcher for Dainty Maid Manufacturing Co.

The funeral service will be private. There are no calling hours. Memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St.; or to American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., both Framingham, MA 01701. The Fitchburg Chapel of Sawyer-Miller-Masciarelli Funeral Home, 129 Elm St., is directing arrangements.

Joseph Downing Sr., 59

LANCASTER- Joseph H. Downing Sr., 59, of 25 Burbank Lane, died Thursday, March 28, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident on I-190 in West Boylston.

He leaves his wife of 37 years, Joyce A. (O'Connor) Downing; a son, Joseph H. Downing Jr. of Clinton; two daughters; Mary Ellen Earl of Hudson and Kathleen M. LeBlanc of Leominster; two brothers, Frank and Daniel Downing, both of Lancaster; four grandchildren; and a niece. A sister, Viola Moon of Lancaster, predeceased him. He was born in Clinton, son of Ernest and Ruth (Fernald) Downing, and lived in Lancaster most of his life. He graduated from Lancaster High School and attended Worcester Junior College.

Mr. Downing was a district supervisor for Boston Gas Company for 30 years before retiring. He was a member of the Boston Gas Quarter Century Club. He was formerly a Highway Commissioner, and also a call firefighter for many years. He was a member of the Trinity Lodge of Masons in Clinton.

A Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 6, in St. John the Evangelist Church, 80 Union St., Clinton. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, in Robert J. McNally Funeral Home, 304 Church St., Clinton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Joslin Diabetes Center, 1 Joslin Place, Boston, MA 02215.

Wesley H. Dryden, 93
Monday, March 25, 2002

SPENCER- Wesley H. Dryden, 93, of 229 North Spencer Road, died Sunday, March 24, at home.

His wife, Alice I. (Pajala) Dryden, died in 1985. He leaves two sons, Robert W. Dryden of Spencer and John W. Dryden of Millbury; a brother, Ralph Dryden of Spencer; a sister, Dorothy Stroud of Convers, Texas; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren. He was born in Central Falls, R.I., son of Ralph and Phoebe (Boucher) Dryden, and lived many years in Millbury before moving to Spencer in 1998.

Mr. Dryden owned Dryden Sports of Worcester. He taught fly tying classes in Worcester many years, and was an avid fly fisherman and hunter.

He was an archaeology enthusiast, specializing in local Indian relics. He was a former member of Millbury Federated Church.

The funeral service and burial will be held at the convenience of the family. Donations may be made to VNA Hospice Care Inc., 120 Thomas St., Worcester, MA 01060. Pillsbury Funeral Home, 163 Main St., is directing arrangements.

Louis A. Duca Sr., 82

WORCESTER -- Louis A. Duca Sr., 82, of 31 Eureka St., a World War II veteran and a retired taxi cab owner and operator, died Sunday, March 31, in the Hospice Residence, after an illness.

He leaves his wife of 56 years, Catherine R. (Martinelli) Duca; a son, Louis A. Duca Jr. of Boylston; a daughter, Maryann Perrin of Worcester; seven grandchildren; nieces and nephews. A brother, Anthony Duca, and a sister, Janet Lamonda, predeceased him. He was born in Clinton, son of Augustus and Grace (Granada) Duca, and lived here most of his life. He attended Worcester public schools. He was an Army veteran of World War II, and participated in the D-Day Invasion and the Battle of the Bulge.

Mr. Duca owned and operated an Arrow cab, retiring in 1984. Previously, he owned, with his brother, Duca Bros. Oil Service and Duca Bros. Painting. He formerly owned and operated a Shell station on Route 9. He was a member of Our Lady of the Angels Church, and a member and past president of the Cab Owners Association.

The funeral, with military honors, will be held Thursday, April 4, from Mercadante Funeral Home & Chapel, 370 Plantation St. (www.mercadantefuneral.com), with a Mass at 10:30 a.m. in Our Lady of the Angels Church, 1222 Main St. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to VNA Hospice Residence, 10 Judith Road, Worcester, MA 01602.

James J. Dunn, 87

WEST YARMOUTH- James J. Dunn, 87, of West Yarmouth, formerly of Weymouth, died Monday, March 25.

He leaves his wife of 62 years, Catherine (Navin) Dunn; two daughters; a son; a brother; a sister, Ann Nichols of Grafton; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services were held from the McDonald Funeral Home, 809 Main St., South Weymouth. Donations may be made to The Scholarship Fund, c/o Weymouth High School, 1051 Commercial St., Weymouth, MA 02188.

Sister Irene Duval, 89
Sunday, March 31, 2002

PUTNAM- Sister Irene Duval, 89, a member of the Daughters of the Holy Spirit, died Friday, March 29, in Day Kimball Hospital.

She leaves two sisters, Lydia Berube of Spencer and Yvonne Lizotte of Lunenburg; nephews, nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces. She was born in Fitchburg, daughter of Joseph Duval Sr. and Aimee (Deschesnes) Duval. She moved to the Provincial House in 1989.

She entered religious life in 1930 and made her religious profession in 1933 at the Motherhouse in St. Brieuc, France. She was then known as Sister Gabriel Lalemant. After her profession, Sister Irene served as a music teacher and mistress of boarders at St. Pol de Leon, France. She then became a teacher at St. Mary School, here, and taught at St. Anne School in Hartford from 1956 to 1987. She continued pastoral work at St. Anne until retiring in 1989.

The funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 2, in the Provincial House Chapel, 72 Church St. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery. Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, April 1, in the Provincial House Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Daughters of the Holy Spirit Retirement Fund, 72 Church St., Putnam, CT 06260. Gilman Funeral Home, 104 Church St., is directing arrangements.

Hilda V. Dykstra, 93

NORTHBRIDGE- Hilda V. (VanderBrug) Dykstra, 93, of Chestnut Street, Whitinsville, died Saturday, March 30, in St. Camillus Health Center.

Her husband, George Dykstra, died in 1986. She leaves two sons, Allen Dykstra of Whitinsville and David Dykstra of Traverse City, Mich.; a daughter, Janet Fox of Denver; two sisters, Annie Bosma of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Elsie Dekker of Edmonton, Canada; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. A son, Edward Dykstra, predeceased her. She was born in the Netherlands, daughter of Auke and Jantje (Bosma) VanderBrug, and moved to Whitinsville at age 14.

Mrs. Dykstra was a longtime member of Fairlawn Christian Reformed Church, Whitinsville.

The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 4, in Fairlawn Christian Reformed Church, 305 Goldthwaite Road, Whitinsville. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Whitinsville. Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, in Buma Funeral Home, 480 Church St., Whitinsville.

Donald E. Engvall, 52
Thursday, March 28, 2002

WORCESTER -- Donald E. Engvall, 52, of 20 Buckingham St., died Sunday, March 24, in UMass Memorial Medical Center - University Campus after an illness.

He leaves his mother, Dorothy (Bassett) Engvall of Worcester; and a sister, Lynda Engvall of Worcester. He was born in Worcester, son of the late Armin Engvall. He attended Burncoat High School and Worcester State College. He served in the Army.

Mr. Engvall was a laborer. He enjoyed fishing and gardening.

The funeral service and burial in All Faiths cemetery will be private. There are no calling hours. Graham, Putnam & Mahoney Funeral Parlors, 838 Main St., is directing arrangements.

Mary M. Evans, 64
Sunday, March 31, 2002

WORCESTER -- Mary M. (McGarry) Evans, 64, of 7 Marjorie St. and of 53 Albert Place, Ballymena, Northern Ireland, died Saturday, March 30, at her Worcester home.

Her husband, Joseph Evans, predeceased her. She leaves two brothers, Patrick and Donald McGarry, both of Ireland; four sisters, Annie McMullan, Ellen Bonner, Philomena Connolly and Grace McGlade, all of Ireland; nephews and nieces. She was born in Ballymoney, Ireland, daughter of Patrick and Annie McGarry.

Mrs. Evans was a nurse's aide.

The funeral service will be held in St. Patrick's Church in Loughgiel, Northern Ireland. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Loughgiel. Calling hours, with a prayer service, will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 1, in Caswell-King Funeral Home, 474 Grove St.

Phanessa E. Fisher, 22
Thursday, March 21, 2002

STERLING- Phanessa E. "Phanny Mae" Fisher, 22, of 155 Greenland Road, a student and athlete at Westfield State College, died Tuesday, March 19, in UMass Memorial Medical Center - Memorial Campus, Worcester, after a battle with cancer.

She leaves her parents, Gary A. and Mary M. (Estelle) Fisher of Sterling; a brother, Garrett K. Fisher of Sterling; a sister, Candace E. Fisher of Sterling; her paternal grandparents, Raymond and Clare (Bartley) Fisher of Sterling; her maternal grandparents, Arnold and Geraldine (Anderson) Estelle of Huntington; her maternal great-grandmother, Vara (Caney) Estelle of West Springfield; and her fiance, Robert Snipes Jr. of Sterling. She was born in Leominster and graduated from Wachusett Regional High School, Holden, in 1997, where she was goalie on the varsity field hockey team, a pitcher on the varsity softball team and received the softball MVP award.

Miss Fisher majored in art education at Westfield State College, where she was active on the field hockey and softball teams and received the outstanding player award for softball her freshman year. After graduation, she planned to attend Mount Ida College, Newton, for funeral service. Her jersey was retired at Westfield State College this year. She played for the Undertakers women's softball team in Clinton and on the league's all-star team. She was active in Girl Scouts for 12 years and was an adult member. While at college, she was a Brownie leader. She was also a member of St. Richard of Chichester Church and the Eight Point Sportsmen's Club.

The funeral will be held Saturday, March 23, from Miles-Sterling Funeral Home (www.milesfuneralhome.com), 100 Worcester Road, with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Richard of Chichester Church, 4 Bridge St. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery. Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 22, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity.

Earl C. Fletcher, 83

NORTHBRIDGE- Earl C. Fletcher, 83, of 186 Castle Hill Road, Whitinsville section of Northbridge, a World War II veteran, died Thursday, March 28, in Milford-Whitinsville Regional Hospital.

He leaves his wife of 57 years, Jeannette (Richard) Fletcher; two sons, Earl C. Fletcher, Jr. and Michael L. Fletcher, both of Whitinsville; a daughter, Beverly DeYoung of Whitinsville; a sister, Alice Adams of Rhode Island; and four grandchildren. A daughter, Judith Fletcher; and a brother, Harry Fletcher, predeceased him. He was born in Northbridge, son of Leon and Sarah (Hammond) Fletcher. He lived in Uxbridge, Manchaug, and for most of his life in Whitinsville. He attended Northbridge schools. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in Europe.

Mr. Fletcher worked for many years at U.S. High Pile Company in Millbury, retiring in 1983. Before that, he worked at Schuster's Woolen Mill in Douglas, Harrington-Richardson Company's Rochdale plant, and at Whitin Machine Works in Whitinsville. He was a member of the Mateychuk Post, American Legion in Manchaug, and the Whitinsville Fish and Game Club. He was an accomplished artist, specializing in charcoal and watercolor drawings. He built model lighthouses, and he enjoyed fishing.

A celebration of his life will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 1, in Carr Funeral Home, 24 Hill St., Whitinsville
