Ophelia Anderson, 71
Funeral services for Ophelia Anderson, 71, of Quitman were held Aug. 25 at the Southern Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in the Fellowship Baptist Church Cemetery.Mrs. Anderson died Aug. 23 at Jackson Manor Nursing Home after a lengthy battle with leukemia.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robley and May Cox; brother, Eugene Cox; and great-niece, Tanya Hughes.
She is survived by her husband, Dewey of Quitman; son, Jesse of Fort Worth, Texas ; and sisters, Pauline Uli-Zysek of Shreveport and Ann Hill and husband Don of Quitman.
Services were under the direction of Southern Funeral Home of Jonesboro.
Bond
Loretta Bond, 69
Graveside services for Loretta Bond, 69, of Jonesboro were held Aug. 23 at the Walnut Ridge Cemetery
with the Rev. Bill Staples officiating.
She died Aug. 21 at Forest Haven Nursing Home after a long illness.
She is survived by sons, Danny Andrew Fallen of Dallas, Jerald Dwayne Jones of Bernice and Walter Levi Bond and wife Annette of Jonesboro; daughters, Karen Rose Hegewood and husband Jerry of Tennessee; Alva Elaine Dean and husband Rannie of Bernice and Katherine Renee Bond of Jonesboro; brothers, Dow W. Rushing, Jr. of Lafayette and Johnny Rushing of Broussard; 10 grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services were under the direction of Southern Funeral Home of Jonesboro.
Coleman
Mary Coleman, 85
Funeral services for Mary Chloe Coleman, 85, of Baton Rouge will be held Aug. 28 at the Southern Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Leach officiating. Burial followed in the Old Saline Cemetery.
Mrs. Coleman died Aug. 25 in Baton Rouge after a long illness.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Cosby L. Coleman; daughter, Elizabeth Leedy; grandson, Keith Coleman; granddaughter, Catherine Leedy; and five brothers and sisters.
She is survived by sons, Cosby Coleman and wife Dora of Houston, William Coleman and wife Carolyn of Danville, Jerry Coleman and wife Nelda of Shreveport, Gerald Coleman and wife Violet of Denham Springs and Billy David Coleman and wife Darrie of Lucky; son-in-law, Paul Leedy, Sr. of Jonesboro; sister, Josephine Ray of Houston; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Services were under the direction of Southern Funeral Home of Jonesboro.
Duck
Robert Duck, 59
Funeral services for Robert Dale Duck, 59, of Ruston were held Aug. 23 at the North Hodge Assembly of God with the Revs. Gene Cumpton, Stuart Toms and Steve Foster officiating. Burial followed in the Beech Springs Baptist Cemetery.
Mr. Duck died Aug. 21 at Glenwood Medical Center.Born Oct. 3, 1942 in Quitman, he was a mudlogger.
He is survived by daughters, Shelly Beech and husband Randy of Chatom, Al; and Deann Worley and husband Doug of Ruston; son, Bobby Duck and wife Karen of Quitman; brother, Douglas Wayne Duck of Indiana; and five grandchildren.
Pallbearers were J.W. Duck, Danny Hanes, Elmer Lane Hanes, Johnny Lowe, Patrick Duck and Bennie Phillips.
Services were under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home.
Porter
Charles R. Porter, 69
Charles R. Porter, 69, retired Engineering Chief for General Dynamics and Lockheed died Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, at his residence after a lengthy illness. Services were held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, Aug. 19, 2002 at First Baptist Church of Lakeside. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Lakeside Building Fund, 8801 Jacksboro Hwy., Fort Worth, TX 76135.Mr. Porter was born Dec. 8, 1932, in Jonesboro, La., and was a longtime Fort Worth resident. He was a 1959 graduate of Louisiana Tech University, and retired in 1994 after 35 years of service at General Dynamic and Lockheed. He was a longtime and faithful member of First Baptist Church of Lakeside.
He and his wife Billie celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on May 5, 2002. He was preceded in death by his father Joe Thomas Porter, his mother Lucille Porter Brown, and his son-in-law Raymond Phelps.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Billie, daughter Cheryl Phelps, sister Merle Merrigan, granddaughters Melissa Rosamond and husband Richard, Jennifer Jenkins and her husband Brian, and great grandchildren Jason, Joey, Joci, and Jessica.
Cremation followed the service.

Myrtis Allen, 66
Funeral services for Myrtis M. Allen of Franklin were held Aug. 17 at the Southern Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. A.L. Lyle officiating. Burial followed in the Sanders Chapel Cemetery.
Mrs. Allen died Aug. 15 after a lengthy illness.
She was a certified nurses’ assistant.
She is survived by her step-mother, Stella Stewart of Hodge; son, Phillip Allen and wife Lisa of Kingwood, Texas ; daughters, Betty Allen Landry and husband Emanuel of Centerville and Phyllis Allen of New Iberia; sisters, Lucille Anderson of Jonesboro, Bobby Shows of Dodson, Sandra Holden of Dodson, Dianne Wheelington of Calhoun and Brenda Porter of Jonesboro; brothers, J.W. Stewart, Jr. and wife Mary of Jonesville, William McBride of Haughton, James H. Reed of Jonesboro, Walter “Buster” Stewart of Hodge and Johnny L. Stewart of Quitman; step-brother, Machen Reed of Jonesboro; grandchildren, Daphne Landry Frioux and husband Sammy of New Iberia, Davin Landry and wife Tiffany of Franklin, Courtney Allen of Kingwood and Jade Salazer of New Iberia; and one great-grandchild, McKenzie Landry of Franklin.Services were under the direction of Southern Funeral Home of Jonesboro.
Carpenter
Ezelle Carpenter, 66
Funeral services for Ezelle Carpenter, 66, of Winnfield were held Aug. 19 at the Southern Funeral Home Chapel in Winnfield with the Rev. Lamar Carpenter officiating. Burial followed in the Bethlehem Cemetery
in Calvin.
Mrs. Carpenter died Aug. 17 at Winn Parish Medical Center.Born in Bienville Parish, she was a retired waitress and homemaker. She was also a member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by a son, Bennie Carpenter; and brothers, Billy Leroy Kirkham and Bernice Ray Kirkham.
She is survived by sons, Richard Carpenter of Baytown, Texas and Timothy Ederts Carpenter of Jonesboro; brothers, Joe Kirkham of Jonesboro and Lyndon Glen Kirkham of Galveston, Texas ; and two grandchildren.Pallbearers were Roy Kirkham, Trandon Carpenter, Keith Gates, George Dixon, Greg Carpenter and Link Martin.
Services were under the direction of Southern Funeral Home of Winnfield.
Hall
Carroll Hall, 81
Mr. Carroll Hall, 81, went to be with the Lord on Aug. 15, 2002. Funeral services were held Aug. 17 t the Chapel of Edmonds Funeral Home. The Revs. Robert Leach and Jeff Stroud officiated.
Mr. Carroll was a native and life-long resident of Friendship, La. He was a major watermelon grower in the Saline area, providing jobs for many young people over the years. He was also retired from the Woodlands Division of Stone Container in Hodge.
He was a decorated World War II veteran who served in the Army Air Corps in the Pacific Theater throughout the war.
Mr. Carroll is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Hazel; his son and daughter-in-law Keith and Jean Hall of Friendship, La.; daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Jim Martin of Baton Rouge, La.; his son and daughter-in-law, Jodie and Kathy Hall of Friendship, La.; three grandchildren, Alana Gail Macaluso and husband Kevin of Houston, Texas , Dustin Hall Martin and wife Amy of Baton Rouge, La. and Hunter Carroll Hall of Friendship, La.; one great-grandson, Devin Blake Martin of Baton Rouge, La., and a host of friends and acquaintances.
Pallbearers were Kim Treadway, Michael Phillips, Murray Hall, Ted Sanderlin, John Plunkett and John Patterson. Honorary pallbearers were Jim D. Martin, Bo Harville, Malvin Hall, J.R. Davis and Robert Thomas.
The family extends its gratitude to Dr. Edward Mariano and the entire staff of the ICU of Lincoln General Hospital in Ruston, La.
Services were under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home.
Smith
Jay Smith, 87
Funeral services for Jay D. Smith, 87, were held Aug. 20 at the First Baptist Church of Arcadia. The Revs. Robert Tyler and Jeff Hoffman officiated. interment followed in the Driskill Mountain Cemetery. Mr. Smith was born July 2, 1915 and died Saturday, Aug. 17 at the Christus Schumpert Medical Center in Shreveport. He was a retired U. S. Postal Service postmaster at Hodge with 30 years of service, a member of the American Legion Post 70 in Arcadia and a devoted member and Deacon of the Mount Olive Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 50 years, Lois Smith.
He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Opal Smith; daughters: Margaret Waits and husband Ray and Brenda Antee and husband Shane all of Arcadia; sons J.D. Smith and wife Kitty of Bossier City and David Wayne Smith and wife Becki of Plain Dealing; 10 grandchildren, Steven Summerlin and wife Donna of Shreveport, Kevin Summerlin and wife Amber of Virginia Beach, Va., Lori Gore and husband Brad, Julie Pharr and husband Jonas, Sarah Smith all of Bossier City, Christi Smith of Sheridan, Ark., Susan Smith of Plain Dealing and Bert Crawford, Zack Crawford, and Jacob Antee all of Arcadia; five great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a host of family and friends.
Pallbearers were nephews Eugene Smith, Ray Dean Smith, Billy Smith, Cliff Smith, Ken Bowman and Roger Lewis.
Honorary Pallbearers were the Deacons of the Mount Olive Baptist Church. Memorials may be made to Mt. Olive Baptist Church Building Fund, 794 Bear Creek Road, Quitman, LA 71268.Services were under the direction of Walker Brothers of Arcadia.
Sneed
Frances Sneed, 67
Services for Frances F. “Cricket” Sneed, 67, of Jonesboro, La. will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2002 at Southern Funeral Home Chapel in Jonesboro and at 2 p.m. at Sardis Baptist Church, near Farmerville with the Rev. Bill Staples officiating. interment will be in the Sardis Cemetery
near Farmerville.
Mrs. Sneed was born Feb. 19, 1935 in Farmerville and Passed away on Sunday, Aug. 18, 2002 in Jonesboro. She is preceded in death by her husband, Bill Sneed; her parents, Dub and Angie Bearden; a sister, Nina Owens; two brothers, Dick Bearden and Phil Bearden and infant twins.
Survivors include two sons, Stanley “Bubba” Sneed and wife Tammy of Bryceland and Billy Sneed and wife Joan of Zwolle; two daughters, Tanna “Sissy” Sneed of Jonesboro and Nina Bradford and husband Phillip of Jonesboro; sister-in-law, Gladys Brown of Quitman; grandchildren, Terrie Williams, Kyle Sneed, Malina Sneed, Jeff Hines, Shay Sneed, Danielle Treadway and Will Treadway; two great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and a very special friend Jim Springfield.
