Coleman
Carl Coleman, 80
Carl “Shug” Coleman, 80, died at Schumpert Medical Center on Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002 following a brief illness. Mr. Coleman was a native of Jonesboro and a resident of Shreveport for 35 years. As a hobby he performed in many bands, and at church he enjoyed listening to others perform. He played several different musical instruments and was a decorated veteran who served in World War II during the Normandy Campaign, the Northern France Campaign, the Central Europe Campaign and the Rhineland Campaign.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Steve and Lillie Coleman and brother, S.L. Coleman.
He is survived by his son Ric Coleman; daughter, Toni Caruso; one grandchild; two great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Wayne and Bud Coleman.
Services were under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home.
Donaldson
Ina Donaldson, 94
Funeral services for Ina Williams Donaldson, 94, of Jonesboro were held Oct. 29 at the Fellowship Baptist Church with the Revs. R.P. Willis and E.D. Morris officiating. Burial followed in the Fellowship Cemetery
in Quitman.
Mrs. Donaldson died Oct. 27 at the Jackson Parish Hospital.
Born Jan. 29, 1908 in Union, she was a homemaker.
She is survived by daughter, Maylene Dingler and husband Bill of Fort Worth; son, Charlie Dale Donaldson and wife Rosemary of Germantown, Tenn.; sister, Laverne Langlois of New Rhodes; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Tommie Jones, Joe Langlois, Eddie Maxwell, Jerry Maxwell, Rob Williams and Joe Williams.
Services were under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home.
Merrigan
Connie Merrigan, 41
Anchorage, Alaska resident Connie Lynn Merrigan, 41, died Oct. 19, 2002 at her home.
A gathering of friends was held at 3 p.m., Friday, Oct. 25 at Evergreen Memorial Chapel, 737 E St. A service of remembrance followed at 4 p.m. with Chaplain Don McCullough officiating.
Ms. Merrigan was born May 16, 1961 in Lake Charles and received her education at Baylor and East Stroudsburg, Penn. She lived in Anchorage from 1974-77 and returned to Alaska in March 2000.Ms. Merrigan worked for the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corp. in Bethel for a year and for the University of Anchorage for a year.
Her family wrote, “Connie was a passionate friend, daughter, sister and aunt whose beautiful spirit would touch and enlighten (everyone).”
Survivors include her mother, Merle Merrigan of Quitman; niece, Anita Merrigan of Anchorage; sister, Toni Merrigan of Wasilla; and brother-in-law Roy T. Sheller of Wasilla.
Her father, Gene Merrigan, preceded her in death.
Family requests memorial donations to Defenders of Wildlife, 1104 14th St. N.W.; Suite 1400, Washington , D.C. 20005.Arrangements were made with Evergreen Memorial Chapel.

Cheryl Gates,38
Memorial services for Cheryl “Shari” Ann Gates, 38, of Jonesboro were held Oct. 19 at the Jonesboro Assembly of God with the Rev. Paul Bradford officiating.
Mrs. Gates died Oct. 15 in her home.
Born May 29, 1964 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, she was a housewife.
She is survived by her husband, Greg Gates of Jonesboro; daughters, Andrea Sophia Gates of Jonesboro, Victoria Lynn Gates of Jonesboro and Daniell Christine Gates of Jonesboro; father, Richard Fredrick Danowsky and wife Carla of Sunrise Beach, Mo.; sister, Cynthia Ficher and husband Robert of Independence, Ore.; and brothers, Richard Raymond Danowsky and wife Beth of Sigourney, Iowa and Augustine George Kiss and wife Dawn of Issaquah, Wash.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made in her memory to the memorial fund at Jonesboro State Bank.

Watson
Dorothy Watson, 81
Graveside services for Dorothy Mae Watson, 81, of Crosby, Texas were held Oct. 17 at the Jimmie Davis Tabernacle Cemetery
with the Rev. Robert Tyler officiating.
Mrs. Watson died Oct. 12 in Crosby.
Born Feb. 15, 1921 in Akron, Ohio, she was a housewife.
She is survived by her husband, James L. Watson of Crosby; daughter Adrienne Jean Davis of Crosby; sons, James Everett Watson and wife Anne of Pawleys Island, S.C. and William Nicholas Watson and wife Eve of Baton Rouge; brother, George Schmidt of Hodge; and six grandchildren.

Brady
Peggy Brady, 76
Peggy Myers Meredith Brady, beloved mother, grandmother, aunt and friend died September 29, 2002 in Jonesboro, La. She was 76. Services were held at the Jonesboro United Methodist Church in Jonesboro, La. on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. David Dietzel, Rev. Jimmie Pyles and Rev. Wayne Howington officiating. Pallbearers were Mike McDonald, Joe Collins, Josh Folden, Jacob Folden, Jarred Horton and Bill Jimmerson. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Charles Garrett and Jim Beal. Burial followed in the Garden of Memories Cemetery
in Jonesboro under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home.
Mrs. Brady taught kindergarten and elementary education in Chicago, Ill., Lake Charles, Jonesboro and Hodge, La. For many years she was the Title 1 Supervisor for Jackson Parish. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Beta Chapter.
A native of Jonesboro, Mrs. Brady attended Jonesboro-Hodge High School. She graduated from Northwestern State College in Natchitoches, La. with a bachelor of science in 1946; a bachelor of arts in education from Louisiana Polytechnic Institute in Ruston in 1954; a master of arts plus 30 in reading education from Louisiana Tech in 1976; and was recognized for her dedication and service to Northwestern State University in 1996. While attending Northwestern, Mrs. Brady became a member of Theta Sigma Epsilon Sorority. She studied painting and other media at the Art Institute of Chicago, and later in New Orleans.
Following the example of her parents, Mrs. Brady was an active volunteer in her community and church. Through her stepmother, Mildred Meredith, she developed a talent and enthusiasm for genealogy, and became well known for detailed research into the history of her family’s branches of the Myers and Meredith families.
Mrs. Brady is preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Asa Ansley Meredith and Beatrice Myers Meredith; her sister, Betty Meredith Horton; and step-mother Mildred Stinson Meredith. Her survivors include two daughters, Meredith Pytleski an husband Joe, and Beabe Thompson and husband Dan; four grandchildren, Ansley Holly, Brooke Holly, Sam Thompson and Colin Thompson; step-grandson Joe Pytleski; step-brother, David Stinson and his wife Sue. Very dear to her heart were her nieces, Jill Maxwell and husband Michael, Jane Folden and husband Kenneth; nephews Wesley Horton and his wife Freida and Michael Horton; as well as her many grandnephews, grandnieces and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, American Society (1-800-227-245), American Association for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, (www.aspca.org), or the Jonesboro United Methodist Church.
Essmeier
Julia Essmeier, 62
Funeral services for Julia Blake Essmeier, 62, of Jonesboro were held Sept. 26 at the First Baptist Church of Jonesboro with the Rev. Dr. Matthew Wohlfarth officiating. Burial followed in the Garden of Memories.
Mrs. Essmeier died Sept. 23 at Jackson Parish Hospital.
Born June 21, 1940 in Jonesboro, she was a homemaker.
Mrs. Essmeier was preceded in death by her parents, Issac and Mildred Davis Blake and one brother, Danny Blake.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the building fund of the First Baptist Church of Jonesboro.
Mrs. Essmeier is survived by her husband Don Essmeier of Jonesboro; sons, David Essmeier and wife Lisa of Dodson and Jed Essmeier and wife Paula of Quitman; daughters, Susan Grover and husband John of Keene, N.H. an Kathryn Tuttle and husband Tracy of Caddo Mills, Texas ; brothers Joe Blake of Houston and John Blake of Monroe; and five grandchildren, Emily Essmeier, Lee Essmeier, Chelsey Essmeier, Bailey Essmeier and Ryan Grover.
Pallbearers were Andy Brown, Leonard Conville, Bill DeCou, Randy Layfield, Ross Pullin and Jimmy Robinson.

Moss
Hazel Moss, 91
Funeral services for Hazel Smelley Moss, 91, of Chatham were held Oct. 1 at the First Baptist Church in Chatham with the Revs. Johnny Smith and Bill Moore officiating. Burial followed in the Taylor Cemetery
in Liberty Hill.
Mrs. Moss died Sept. 28 in Lincoln General Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Moss was a retired elementary school teacher in Chatham. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Chatham and a charter member of the Temple Baptist Church in Ruston. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Crescent Chapter No. 64 Order of the Eastern Star, Jonesboro and DAR. Mrs. Moss was a former Jackson Parish Woman of the Year.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William Jackson Smelley and Mary F. Loe Smelley; two infant siblings; four sisters, Ola Brooks, Vera Brooks, Mary D. Tolbert and Floy Noah; and two brothers, William Grady Smelley and Ralph J. Smelley.
She is survived by her husband, Charles C. Moss of Chatham; sister, Elily Hinkie of Bossier City and a host of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Frank Wood, Lonnie Salsbury, Leo Walker, Denmon Garner, Denny Garner, Billy Head, Charles Smelley and Will Hinkie.
Honorary pallbearers were Bill Smelley, John Mella, Cecil Kline, Delton Spillers, David Baio, Mike Smelley, Steve Garner and all the deacons at the First Baptist Church in Chatham.
Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church in Chatham or the Shriners Hospital for Children in Shreveport.
Services were under the direction of Southern Funeral Home of Jonesboro.
Sevier
Ruby Sevier, 90
Funeral services for Ruby Lee Rowe Sevier, 90, of Jonesboro were held Sept. 26 at the Southern Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Bill Wagoner and William Busby officiating. Burial followed at the Old Antioch Cemetery
near Brewton’s Mill.
Mrs. Sevier died Sept. 24 at the Jackson Parish Hospital after a lengthy illness.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Lucille Mooney; son-in-law, Johnny Ferguson and three brothers.
She is survived by her son, Silas Rowe, Jr. of Saline; daughters, Maudine Ferguson Dodson and husband Bobby of Jonesboro, Gloria Hutto and husband Lamar of Dodson and Ruth Caskey and husband Huey of Goldonna; one son-in-law, Myron Mooney of Goldonna; 23 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren.
Services were under the direction of Southern Funeral Home of Jonesboro.
Parker
Jeannie Parker, 65
Funeral services for Jeannie Parker, 65, of Jonesboro were held at the Siloam Cemetery
in Gansville with the Rev. Dr. Matthew Wohlfarth officiating.
Ms. Parker died Sept. 24 at her home after a sudden illness.
She was a secretary.
She is survived by a host of cousins and friends.
Services were under the direction of Southern Funeral Home of Jonesboro.
Wilkerson
Antonie Wilkerson, 67
Funeral services for Antoinie Elwira Wilkerson, 67, of Jonesboro were held Sept. 29 at the Edmonds Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Billy Mac McBride officiating. Burial followed in the Gayla Traina Cemetery.
Mrs. Wilkerson died Sept. 26.Born April 22, 1935 in Machenbach, Germany, she was a cafeteria cook at the Jackson Parish Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her husband John E. Wilkerson.
She is survived by daughters, Janet Townsend and husband Richard of Wynne, Ark. and Marion Street of Harlem, Ga.; step-daughters, Melody Gates and husband Jerry of Jonesboro and Debbie Tucker and husband Greg of Rathburn, Idaho; sons, John Street of Jonesboro and Robert Street of Jonesboro; step-son, Terry Wilkerson and wife Rayne of Florence, S.C.; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Greg Gates, Adam Ott, Keith Standley, Sean Thompson, Brandon Wells and Richard Wells.
Services were under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home.
