Sherry Young
Sherry K. Young, 65, Passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2012 in her residence.
Mrs. Young was a member of Full Life Assembly of God Church of DeQuincy. She loved music and singing. She played guitar and sang with the praise and worship team at her church for many years. Mrs. Young loved teaching children about the Lord. She was very involved in the services at Greenhill Nursing Home and loved lifting their spirits through playing and singing about the Lord. She was a loving wife of 47 years. She loved animals and gardening. She never met a stranger and was a mother figure to all who knew her and she will be greatly missed.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lavern Degler and Opal Davis; her brother Terry Lee Degler and sister, Verna Bigelow.
Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Young of DeQuincy; step-father, Edwin "Pops" Davis of Waunakee, Wis.; daughter, Kaylene Marcantel and husband Dale of Sulphur; brother, Gary Degler and wife Gladys of Tomah, Wis.; sister, Jean Gordon and husband Brad of Saulkville, Wis.; grandchildren, Dawn Cooper and husband Trace of Sulphur, and Rebecca Marcantel and fiance’, Ryan Gary of Sulphur; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held Friday, Aug. 10, at 2 p.m. at Full Assembly of God Church of DeQuincy and continued on Saturday from 9 a.m. until service time. Her funeral was at the church on Saturday, Aug. 11, at 2 p.m. Pastor Greg Cavenah, Pastor Ken Hooper and Al LeJune officiated. Burial was in Perkins Cemetery
under the direction of Hixson-Snider Funeral Home.
Claude Anderson
Claude Eugene Anderson, 65, of Oretta, died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2012 at his residence.
He was an United States Air Force Veteran. He loved racing and enjoyed it with his son. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, farming and running hoop nets on the Sabine River with his children. He was known as a compassionate and generous man, always trying to help others as he could. He was a great cook. Some of his specialties were fajitas, crawfish etouffee and homemade sausage.
He was the son of the late R. L. Anderson and the late Ruby (Deals) Norfleet.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Margaret Elizabeth Anderson; one daughter, Natascha Vandergriff and husband Victor of DeQuincy; one son, Gene Anderson of DeQuincy; and five grandchildren, Victoria Vandergriff, Kallie Anderson, Jacob Hantz, Corey Hantz and Hannah Hantz.
Mr. Anderson was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Leondis, Carol and Larry Anderson.
The family received friends from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, and from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, at Christensen Funeral Home.
Funeral services were held at Christensen Funeral Home at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, with Bro. Kyle VanWinkle officiating. interment was at Oretta Cemetery
in Oretta.
George Gilliam
George Michael Gilliam, 47, a resident of Vinton, died Friday, Oct. 19, 2012 in Vinton, following injuries sustained as a result of a motorcycle accident.
He was the son of the late George Gilliam and Joe Ann Shane Gilliam.
He is also survived by two sisters, Annette Collier and husband Richard of Vinton and Lynda Duhon and husband Ronnie of Longville.
He was preceded in death by his father, George Gillian, one sister, Mary Powell, one niece, Amanda Howard, one great-niece, Julian Howard and one great nephew, Hayden McQuistion.
The family received friends Tuesday, Oct. 23, from 5-10 p.m. and will receive friends Wednesday Oct. 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Crossroads Baptist Church in Vinton.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. at Crossroads Baptist Church. Pastor Rob Tibbits will be officiating. interment will be at the V.F.W. Cemetery
in Starks under the direction of Christensen Funeral Home.
Howard Mims
Howard Dale Mims, 78, Passed away on Sunday, Oct. 21, 2012.
Howard was an avid fisherman and hunter. He loved joking around with friends and spending time with his dog, Belle.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Nix Mims; sons, Wayne Adams and wife Hannah and Wyley Adams and wife Cindy; daughter, Jessica Mims Estillette and husband Chad; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Mims and Martha Bunch Mims; son, Arthur Ke-Ke Adams II; brothers, Carl Stanley Mims and James Arthur Mims; and sister, Verna Mims Swapp.
His funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, at Hixson Funeral Home of Westlake. Bro. Jon Stanley officiated. Burial followed the service at Baghdad Cemetery
in Westlake.
Visitation was held from 3-10 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, and continued at 8 a.m. Tuesday until the time of service at Hixson Funeral Home of Westlake.
Glenn Craft, Sr.
Glenn Edward Craft Sr., 72, of Ragley died Monday, Oct. 15, 2012 at a local hospital.
He was born in Leesville and lived in Ragley. He was a retired electrician and a member of St. Theodore’s Catholic Church. He was a US Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Gwen Craft of Ragley; sons, Glenn Craft Jr. of Conroe, Texas , and Ragan Gaspard of Ragley; daughters, Connie Blanchard of Lake Charles, Denise Flores of Georgetown, Texas , Keri Burke and Tarry Franck, both of Ragley; brothers, Jimmy Craft of Porter, Texas , Douglas Craft of Cleveland, Texas and Eugene Craft of Merryville; sisters, Linda Boothe of Deville, Wanda Melton of Winnfield, and Dana Cahoon of Elizabeth; 10 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
A mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, Oct. 19, at St. Theodores Catholic Church. The Msgr. Charles Dubois officiated. Burial was in Magnolia Cemetery
in Ragley.
Tommy Myrick
Tommy Wayne Myrick, 37, Passed away on Oct. 20, 2012.
Tommy was a native of Westlake and was most recently a resident of Moss Bluff.
He is survived by his wife, Kathy Nix Myrick; sons, Dylan Wayne Myrick, Logan Kyle Myrick, Jace David Myrick, and Garrison Nix; parents, Charles and Charmayne Hufstedler of Westlake; brother, Cody Lee Myrick and wife Mashanna of Westlake; a nephew, Jaden and a niece, Jalyn; step-brother, Jason Hufstedler of Horn Lake, Miss.; step-sister, Nicole Mackey of Springfield, Ill.; father, Tommy Gene Myrick of Castor; maternal grandmother, Grace Sonnier of Kaplan; paternal grandfather, Walter (Tommy) Myrick of Castor, formerly of Westlake; and his nanny, Debbie Hargrave and husband Rogen of Kaplan, and aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Terry Jean Myrick; and grandfathers, Elvin Z. Guillory and Fred Sonnier.
His funeral service will be Wednesday, Oct. 24, at 2 p.m. at Hixson Funeral Home of Westlake. Jerry Chaddick will officiate. Burial will follow the service at Westlake Memorial Park.
Visitation will be Tuesday, Oct. 23, from 4 to 10 p.m. and will continue Wednesday at 9 a.m. until the time of service at Hixson Funeral Home of Westlake.
Daniel Hudspeth
Daniel David Hudspeth, 63, of Ragley died Monday, Oct. 15, 2012 in his residence.
He was employed by International Specialty Products for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Vanita Salinas Hudspeth of Ragley; sons, Anthony Salinas of Lake Charles, and Adam (Jimmy) Salinas of Ragley; daughters, Jessica Hudspeth of Baton Rouge, Casey Smythe (Jimmy) of Rayne and Annette Salinas of Lake Charles; brothers, Ricky Brown of Boyce, and Vernon Brown of Marksville; sister, Portia Goleman of Boyce; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Freda Brown, his father, Daniel David Hudspeth III, son, Aaron Lee Salinas.
His memorial service was held Sunday, Oct. 21, at Creel Memorial Chapel in Ragley.
Elma Braneff
Elma Christine Braneff, 90, of Starks died Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, in a local care center.
She was a lifelong resident of Starks and was a very active member of First Baptist Church of Starks where she served in several offices. Christine enjoyed crocheting, and traveling, having visited the Holy Land four times as well as going on several group bus trips.
Survivors include her children, Simon Eugene Braneff, Larry Ray Braneff and wife, Rebecca, Albert Lynn Braneff, Ronald Lee Braneff, Prentiss Braneff, and Christina Felice and husband, Bill; one sister, Lucille Ellis and husband, Jimmy; 21 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Simon Braneff; stepdaughter, Margaret Ruth Wales; eight siblings; grandson, Shon Holden Braneff; and great-granddaughter, Christian Leigh Perkins.
Her funeral was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, in First Baptist Church of Starks. The Rev. Glenn Wagnon officiated. Burial was in Clark Cemetery
in Fields under the direction of Hixson Funeral Home of Vinton.
Visitation was from 4-9 p.m. Saturday in the church and 1 p.m. until the time of service Sunday in the church.
Merle Bunch
Merle Marie Marcantel Bunch, 88, Passed away on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013 in a Sulphur hospital.
She was a charter member of New Hope Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and was involved in the Training Union. She was a member of the Daughters of the Confederacy. She enjoyed crafts, quilting, canning fruits and vegetables and working in her flower beds. She took special pride in her genealogy. She spent many summers at Dry Creek Baptist Encampment teaching crafts.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Carroll and Odelia Marcantel; brothers, Martin Marcantel and wife Elizabeth, Arthur Marcantel and Elzia Marcantel and wife Elizabeth.
Survivors include husband of 70 years, Olan "Buddo" Bunch of Vinton; two sons, Jerry Bunch and wife Carolyn and Clayton Bunch and wife Kathy, all of Vinton; two daughters, Cheryl Dosher and husband Ron of Gillis and Elizabeth Koop and husband Steve of DeQuincy; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Her funeral will be on Wednesday, Jan. 9, at 2 p.m. in New Hope Baptist Church with Rev. Roland Hebert and Rev. Jerry Chaddick officiating. Burial will be in Masonic Cemetery
under the direction of Hixson-Snider Funeral Home.
Visitation was held on Tuesday, Jan. 8, from 5 to 9 p.m. at New Hope Baptist Church and will resume on Wednesday at 10 a.m. until service time at the church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the New Hope Baptist Church Building Fund or the Dry Creek Baptist Encampment.
Cliff Buxton
Cliff R. Buxton, 80, of Starks, Passed away Friday, Jan. 4, 2013 at The Care Center of DeQuincy. Born on Dec. 16, 1932 in Starks to his parents, Haston Buxton and Georgianna (Doiron) Buxton, he was a longtime resident of Deweyville and Starks, and had moved back to Starks in 1983. He was a member of the United Pentecostal Church in Deweyville and he worked in the Construction Industry as a Boilermaker for Local 587. He was a graduate of the Lutcher-Stark High School Class of 1950.
Mr. Buxton enjoyed hunting, fishing, travel and he also enjoyed cooking for friends and people within his church family. He will also be remembered for building barbecue pits for many people and for the many kind ways he helped others.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Lonnie Buxton and Orville Buxton; his sister, Geneva Chandler and his stepdaughter, Carlotta Doyle.
Those who will most cherish his memory are his wife, Marjorie Buxton of Starks; his daughters, Terri Lee Buzbee and husband, Bryan of Orange, Texas ; his sons, Charles Randall Buxton of Deweyville, Texas and Ricky Carroll Buxton and wife, Cher of Deweyville; his stepchildren, Douglas DuBose and wife, Josephine of Mauriceville and Angela Stephenson of Orange; his adopted son, Davin Simmons of Seattle, Wash.; his sisters, Jerry Reedy of Orange, Cora Lagrone and husband, Paul of Seattle and Irma Yadon of Seattle.
Services to honor his life will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, at the United Pentecostal Church in Deweyville. Officiating will be Rev. Darrell Orange, Rev. Michael Orange and Rev. Lloyd Parker. Rite of Committal and interment will follow services in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens near Bridge City.
A gathering of family and friends for a time of reflection will be from 6 until 9 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Services are under the direction of Dorman Funeral Home in Orange.

Alvin Hodges
Alvin Hodges, 40, of Starks died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013 in a one vehicle accident.
Services are pending with King’s Funeral Home, 1611 Hwy. 14, Lake Charles.
Marian Edwards
Marian Jourber Edwards was called home to the Lord on Friday, Dec. 28, 2012 at the Herman Memorial Hospital in Houston, Texas .
Services were held at Pleasant Grove Church, 130 N. Lyons St., Lake Charles, on Friday, Jan. 4, from 11 a.m.-12 noon. Visitation was held from 10-11 a.m. She was put to rest at the Community Cemetery
on D. Pullard Rd.
Food was served afterward at the First Church of God and Christ on Hwy. 27.
Patsy Ernst
Patsy Cooper Ernst, 80, of DeQuincy Passed away on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013, at The Arbor and Terrace of Ruston.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Westlake and recently became a member of First Baptist Church of DeQuincy. She graduated from DeQuincy High School and McNeese College. She was a member of the Homecoming Court during her time at McNeese. Mrs. Ernst started her teaching career in DeQuincy and finished at S. P. Arnett Elementary School in Westlake. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
Survivors include grandchildren, Dusty Ingram LeBlanc and husband Brad of Dallas, Texas , and Shane Ingram and wife Casey of Ruston; great-grandchildren, Masey, Cash and Dessa; brother, Lucien Cooper of DeQuincy; and sister, Peggy Robertson and husband, Steve of DeQuincy.
Her funeral services were held on Tuesday, Jan. 8, at 1:30 p.m. in Hixson-Snider Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Rob Walls officiated. Burial was in Perkins Cemetery
in DeQuincy.
Visitation was on Monday from 5-9 p.m. and continued on Tuesday from 8 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.
