Jerry H. Newman
(Died Feb. 1, 2000)
TUMWATER, AK. - Funeral services for Jerry Hansford Newman, 70, a nine-year resident of Tumwater, AK, were conducted Feb. 5 at Olympic Funeral Home in Tumwater.
Burial followed in the Olympic Memorial Gardens in Tumwater, Olympic Funeral Home directing.
Visitation was from 4-8 p.m. Feb. 4 at Olympic Funeral Home in Tumwater.
Mr. Newman suffered a fatal heart attack Feb. 1, 2000 at his home in Tumwater.
Mr. Newman was born May 7, 1929 to Lewis M. and Grace (Martin) Newman of Bush, La.
He was married to Maxine V. Mulvihill, who preceded him in death. He married Anna Marie Powell on Feb. 14, 1987.
A veteran of the United States Army, he served from 1948 to 1952 and was discharged with the rank of sergeant.
He was an Army civil engineer and a lifetime member of American Legion Post 28 in Spenard, AK.
Mr. Newman enjoyed traveling, carpentry, gardening and time spent with his family.
Mr. Newman was preceded in death by a brother, Louis Newman, and his parents, Louis M. and Grace Newman He is survived by his wife, Anna Marie Newman, Tumwater; five daughter, Marti L. Truck and Sandra K. McCoy, both residents of Anchorage, AK, Sheryl A. Evers, Eagle River, AK, Susan A. Ingram, Chehalis, AK, and Deborah M. Hollinger, Tumwater; two sons, Jerry W. Newman and David E. Hollinger, both residents of Centralia, AK; a sister, Sea Willow Warner, Varnado, La.; 11 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mary Brasley Williams Huff
BOGALUSA - The funeral service for Mary B. Huff, 75, is scheduled for 3 p.m. Thursday at Mount Carmel Baptist Church.
Visitation is from 2-6 p.m. tomorrow at Cook-Richmond Funeral Home and will continue on Thursday at 1 p.m. until time of service at Mount Carmel Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Bogalusa Cemetery.
Mrs. Huff died Sunday.
Being a long time resident of Bogalusa, she met eternal rest in the comfort of her home while being showered with love from her family.
Mrs. Huff was a dedicated member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church where she served as an usher. She is also a retired employee of the Bogalusa City Schools.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Needam and Mae Leila Brasley; a sister, Lilly Mae Brasley Hewitt; a brother, Ulysses Brasley; husbands, Harry Williams and Hollis Huff.
Survivors include her two children, Marilyn Williams Brown and Reginald Brown; a godchild, Kim Riley; six grandchildren, Pamdora Brown (Stephen) Williams, Bianca LaShon Brown, Brandon Williams, Mikael Williams, Dawnya Williams and Marcus Williams; a great-grandson, Donoven Williams and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Jennie Sawyer Jolet
(Died Feb. 13, 2000)
FRANKLINTON - The funeral service for Jennie Sawyer Jolet, 68, is scheduled for 2 p.m. tomorrow at Holy Family Catholic Church, Father Bill Blank officiating.
Visitation is from 5-9 today at Crain Funeral Home and continues after 9 a.m. tomorrow until time of service. Burial will follow in Ellis Cemetery.
Mrs. Jolet died Sunday at her residence in Franklinton.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Garyson L. and Jane T. Intrieri Sawyer, Sr.; three sisters, Teresa Johnson , Joy Lynn Heintz, and Mary Intrieri and a brother, Grayson L. Sawyer, Jr. Survivors include her husband, Oliver "Sonny" Jolet, Franklinton; a son, Louis Jolet, Vidor, TX; two daughters, Margaret Downey, Slidell and Melanie Forbes, Franklinton; a brother, Arthur E. Sawyer, New Bedford, PA; three sisters, Katherine Sanchez, Lafayette, Gail Sawyer, Metairie and Peggy Felbinger, IL; two special friends, Rosalee Dickerson and Iris Motichek; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Geraldine Martin
(Died Feb. 15, 2000)
VARNADO - The funeral service for Geraldine Martin, 75, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home.
Visitation is from 4:30-10 p.m. tomorrow at the funeral home.
Burial will follow in the R.D. Fornea Cemetery
in Varnado.
Mrs. Martin died today at Dixon Medical Center in Covington.
The owner of Little Village Grocery and Cafe in Varnado, she is preceded in death by her husband, Thomas C. Martin Sr.; a grandchild; Teresa Blair; a great-grandchild, Haileigh Martin; two brothers, Jimmy Lang and Bobby Lang.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Tommy C. and Delores Martin, Varnado, Jerry B. and Susan Martin, Varnado; a daughter, Carolyn Ann Jones, Varnado; two brothers, Norman L. "Junior" Lang Jr., Bogalusa and Jamie "Venile" Lang, Bogalusa; a half-brother, David Lang, Bogalusa; three half sisters, Mavis Hunt, Brenda Jordan and Nell Lang, all of Bogalusa; and five grandchildren.
Eloise Williams Seal
(Died Feb. 15, 2000)
FRANKLINTON - The funeral service for Eloise Williams Seal, 77, is scheduled for 10 a.m. tomorrow in the chapel of Crain Funeral Home, the Rev. Fr. Bill Blank, the Rev. Larry Archote and the Rev. Troy Varnado officiating.
Visitation is from 6-9 p.m. today at the funeral home and continues after 8 a.m. tomorrow until time of services.
Burial will follow in the Seal Cemetery.
Mrs. Seal died today in Riverside Medical Center, Franklinton.
She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and the owner/operator along with her husband of Seal Grocery for many years. She is preceded in death by her husband, George Norman Seal; two brothers, Cecil and Bobby Williams.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Larry Turnage, Franklinton; two grandchildren, Waylon Turnage and LaRissa Hembree, Franklinton; a brother and sister-in-law, George Kelly and Mary Williams, Amite; a special nephew, Bruce Williams; and four great-grandchildren.
Brenda Sue Savant
(Died Dec. 4, 1999)
BOGALUSA - A funeral service was held yesterday at 2 p.m. in the Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home for Brenda Sue Savant, age 48, who died Saturday at her residence. The Rev. Dr. Marlin Gipson and the Rev. Charles Purvis officiated, with interment in Hillview Memorial Gardens.
She is survived by one daughter, Kristen Callender of Bogalusa; one son, Allen Savant of Pocatello, ID; her mother, Peggy Wallace of Bogalusa; three sisters, Theresa Williams of Varnado; Wanda Culbreath of Franklinton; Deborah Creel of Thomas; a brother, Billy Selman Jr. of Bogalusa; four grandchildren, Hunter Callender, Ashton Callender, Josh Savant and Caleb Savant.
Elmo 'Nute' Bickham
BOGALUSA - Elmo "Nute" Bickham, age 88, died at the LSU Medical Center in Bogalusa. He is retired from Gaylord and is a World War II veteran.
Visitation will be tomorrow at Cook Richmond Funeral Home from 3-7 p.m and on Saturday at Harry Chapel United Methodist Church in Mitchell City from noon to time for the funeral service at 1 p.m. The Rev. Louis Smith will officiate, with following in Duffy Memorial Garden.
He is survived by a sister, Alma B. Jackson of Bogalusa; a daughter, Emma Lee Beasly of Fresno, CA; one devoted niece, Mrs. Marlene (Joe) Sills of Colton, CA; a special cousin, Robert (Lee Edna) Young of Bogalusa; five sister-in-laws; one brother-in-law; a host of great nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mattie Emma Bickham; father, John D. Bickham; mother and step-father, Sarah Magee Bickham Burns and Mike Burns; and a brother, Albert Bickham.
Silas Brown Sr.
ANGIE - Silas Brown Sr., age 85, died Sunday at the Metropolitan Hospice in Jefferson .
The funeral service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Wesley Ray United Methodist Church in Angie with the Rev. Julius Jefferson officiating. interment will follow at the Jefferson Cemetery
in Angie.
Visitation will be Friday from 1-3 p.m. at the Crain and Sons Funeral Home in Bogalusa and at the church from 4-7 p.m. The wake service will be from 7-9 p.m at the church. He is survived by one daughter, Billie Rose Bussey of Pasadena, CA; three sons, Silas (Masako) Brown Jr. of Fayettevile, NC., John E. Brown of New Orleans and Willie Jefferson (Elmira) of New Orleans; a special daughter and sister-in law, Athrin L. W. May Mitchell Easterling
(Died Dec. 12, 1999)
BOGALUSA - May Mitchell Easterling, age 57, a resident of Carthage, MS, died at noon Sunday in University Hospital in Jackson , MS. She was a Registered Nurse.
She is survived by a son, Jason Easterling and an adopted step-daughter, Theresa Easterling, both of Carthage; two grandchildren, Haley Elizabeth Easterling and Desiree Childress; her mother, Sarah Mitchell of Bogalusa; a brother and sister-in-law, William M. and Beth Mitchell of Baton Rouge; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Jimmie and Margaret Hill of Bogalusa, Glen and Nancy Richmond of Tylertown and Keith and Sarah Ruth Richardson of Varnado.
A memorial service will be held tomorrow at 10 a.m. at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Oak Grove, MS, and a graveside service will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. in the Mt. Olive Cemetery
on just off Highway 436 between Bogalusa and Varnado.
James Clifton Mohon Sr.
(Died Dec. 13, 1999)
VARNADO - James Clifton Mohon Sr., age 92 years, finished his journey home Monday at his residence in Varnado. He was a retired employee of Crown Zellerbach Bag Factory in Bogalusa and a member and past elder of Varnado United Pentecostal Church.
The husband of the late Rev. Irene Mohon, he was also preceded in death by a daughter, Patsy Duncan, and a grandson, David Duncan.
He is survived by a son, James Clifton Mohon Jr. and his wife Dora Mohon of Varnado; a daughter, Flora Mohon Gorenflo and her husband, John, of Titusville, FL; 16 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be today from 5 to 10 p.m. at the Brown-McGehee Funeral Home, continuing tomorrow at 8 a.m. until time for the funeral service at 10 a.m. in the funeral home chapel. The Rev. Barry Duncan and the Rev. Stanley Talley will officiate, with interment following in the Mohon Family Cemetery
in Varnado.
Thomas Cleaver Smyth
(Died Dec. 11, 1999)
BOGALUSA - Visitation will be held today from 6-9 p.m. at Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home with rosary at 7:30 p.m. for Thomas Cleaver Smyth, 78, a native of Portland, OR, who died Saturday. A funeral mass will be conducted tomorrow at Annunciation Catholic Church with the Rev. Fr. Lawrence Phelps officiating. Entombment will follow at Sanctuary of Peace Mausoleum in Ponemah Cemetery.
Born Sept. 23, 1921, he was a graduate of Bellarmine High School in Tacoma, WA and of the University of Washington in Seattle. He retired from Crown Zellerbach Corporation as a mechanical engineer after working in mills in Port Angeles, WA, West Linn, OR, Bogalusa and Eureka, CA. He recently returned to reside in Bogalusa after living in Baton Rouge for 15 years. He served as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and the National Guard of Port Angeles, WA and was also a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks.
He is survived by a sister, Mrs. John P. (Louise) Read of Seattle, WA; his children, Michael W. and Susan Smyth Stogner of Bogalusa; grandchildren, Thomas M. and Elizabeth S. Stogner of Abita Springs, Jonathan M. and Trina H. Stogner and Joshua M. Stogner and his fianc‚, Leigh Anne Jarrell, all of Bogalusa; and great-grandchildren, Benjamin M., William H. and Maggie L. Stogner.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth "Bettyjo" Bourdon Smyth; and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert H. Smyth.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Bogalusa Care and Share Program or Annunciation Catholic Church.
Cheryl Nielson Schilling
FRANKLINTON - The funeral service for Cheryl Nielson Schilling, 41, a resident of the Mt. Pisgah community, is scheduled for 2 p.m Sunday in the chapel of Crain Funeral Home in Franklinton. The Rev. Ed. Jenkins, the Rev. Ed Griffin and the Rev. Denny Brumfield will officiate. Visitation is from 6-10 p.m. tomorrow at the funeral home, continuing after 8 a.m. Sunday until time for the final service.
Mrs. Schilling died at 1 p.m. yesterday at her residence.
Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Otho Schilling Jr., Mt. Pisgah community; two sons, Brandon Schilling and Cole Schilling, both of Mt. Pisgah; her mother and father, Willie J. and Jean Roberts Nielson, Franklinton; two brothers, Russell Nielson and Bruce Nielson, Franklinton; and her grandmother, Susie Nielson, Franklinton.
Elma Tynes Zwilling
(Died Jan. 26, 2000)
BOGALUSA - Mrs. Elma Tynes Zwilling, a retired school teacher, 81 years of age, Passed away yesterday in Covington.
The wake will be Friday evening Jan. 28 from 6 to 8 p.m. and the services will be on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home. Her pastor, the Rev. Stephen Teal of Westside Emmanuel Baptist Church, will conduct the services.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Zwilling Sr.; a son, Walter Zwilling Jr.; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Garvin Tynes; three sisters and three brothers.
She is survived by a sister, Bobbie Brooks of Gulfport, four nieces, nine nephews and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
She graduated from Southern Mississippi and always said she would like to be a student all the time because she liked to learn something new every day. This was evident of the many organizations she belonged to and the many hours she spent in each one.
Here are just a few: Senior Citizens with her church, American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary, the Garden Club, which was especially was enjoyable to her as she could get the school children involved to help Bogalusa become the Cleanest City for several years, helping the children to become better citizens; the Retired Teachers' organization, and she was also honored as Teacher of the Year.
She taught Sunday School several years and was active in her church until her death. She also worked with the Credit Union, and she and her family enjoyed many trips with a camping club that took them all over the United States.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Carson Springs Baptist Building Fund in care of Douglas Ray Turnage, Route 2, Sandy Hook, MS 39478 or a favorite charity.
This is the church where she became a Christian at an early age, and where she will be laid to rest with her husband, son, mother, father, two sisters and one brother.
She always said for family and friends not to grieve for her but to rejoice as she was with her family in heaven. Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home is in charge of arrangments.
