Melton Byrd

Funeral services for Mr. Melton Daniel Byrd, 77, of Lake Charles will be held at 2 p.m. today, Nov. 9, 2003, in the Prewitts Chapel in Hornbeck with the Revs. James Corkran and James Mitchell officiating.

Burial will follow in the Prewitts Chapel Cemetery in Hornbeck under the direction of the Hixson Funeral Home of Lake Charles.

Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until time of service today in the church.

Mr. Byrd died Thursday, Nov. 6, 2003, in a Lake Charles Hospital.

He was born in Hornbeck and lived in the Lake Charles area for 57 years.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Moss Bluff, Masonic Lodge F&AM 462, where he was a past master, and the Shriners.

He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy from 1944-46 aboard the USS Logan.

He was a lineman supervisor for Gulf States Utilities for 40 years and a graduate of Hornbeck High School.

Survivors include his wife, Floy Sneed Byrd of Lake Charles; three sons, William David Byrd of Lake Charles, Riley Leon Byrd of Sulphur and Larry Byrd of Moss Bluff; one daughter, Carolyn Corkran of Nederland, Texas ; two brothers, Eunice Byrd of Westlake and Donnell Byrd of Shreveport; one sister, Lillie Behan Leach of Shreveport; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Tape Ministry for Shutins or Prewitts Chapel Cemetery Fund.

Delores McCain

Funeral services for Mrs. Delores Graham McCain, 66, of Leesville will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 10, 2003, in the Labby Memorial Funeral Home chapel in Leesville with Bro. Irby Perkins and Travis Murray officiating.

Burial will follow in the Stephens Cemetery in Leesville.

Visitation will be held from 3-8 p.m. today, Nov. 9, and from 8 a.m. until time of service Monday in the funeral home.

Mrs. McCain died Friday, Nov. 7, 2003, in her residence.

She was a lifelong resident of Leesville, a member of the Jackson Chapel Church of Christ and a Bible school teacher.

Survivors include her husband, Charlie McCain of Leesville; two daughters, Darla Ewing of Denver, Colo., and Candy Maddox of Houston, Texas ; her mother, Lillie Graham of Leesville; one sister, Dianne Martin of Leesville, and two grandchildren.

Kenneth Midkiff

Funeral services for Mr. Kenneth D. Midkiff, 73, of the Knight Community will be held at 2 p.m. today, Nov. 9, 2003, in the Hixson Funeral Home chapel in DeRidder with Bros. Derrick Anderson and Ernest Jarrell officiating.

Burial will follow in the Hinson Cemetery in the Knight Community.

Visitation will be held from 8 a.m. until time of service today in the funeral home.

Mr. Midkiff died Friday, Nov. 7, 2003, in the Christus St. Patrick Hospital in Lake Charles.

He was born in Knight and lived all of his life in the area. He was a graduate of Evans High School in 1948.

He attended and graduated from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas .

He served in the United States Army during the Korean War.

He taught school in the Beauregard Parish school system for several years and retired from the Vernon Parish school systems where he taught at Evans School.

He was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Knight and was a cattleman.

He was a volunteer member of the Knight Community Fire Department.

Survivors include his wife, Eula Mae Midkiff of Knight; one daughter, Leanne Jeane of Knight, Louisiana ; two sisters, Joyce Dean and Doris Angelly both of Knight; One brother, Howard Midkiff of Knight, and one grandchild.

Charles Manasco

Funeral services for Mr. Charles Luke Manasco, 49, of Fort Worth, Texas , will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 1, in the Simpson Baptist Church with the Rev. Gerald Smith officiating.

Burial will follow in the Kisatchie Cemetery under the direction of the Labby Memorial Funeral Home of Leesville.

Visitation will be held from 5-10 p.m. today in the church.

Mr. Manasco died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2003, in Fort Worth, Texas .

He was a native of Fort Worth, Texas , and was employed as a medical assistant in the health care profession.

He was a member of the Richland Hills Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra Manasco of Fort Worth, Texas ; one step-son, Steve Burgett of Fort Worth, Texas ; one step-daughter, Heather Burgett of Fort Worth, Texas ; two brothers, Clyde William Manasco Jr. of Fort Worth, Texas , and Michael Dean Manasco of Lafayette, and his parents, Clyde and Essie Manasco of Simpson.

Gretchen Nichols

Visitation for Mrs. Gretchen Rogers Nichols, 81, of Leesville will be held from 5-8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1, in the Labby Memorial Funeral Home in Leesville.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by the McMillan Funeral Home in Booneville, Miss.

Mrs. Nichols died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, in the Beauregard Memorial Hospital in DeRidder.

She was a native of Booneville, Miss., and lived in Vernon Parish for the past 32 years.

She was a homemaker and a lifelong member of the Carolina Methodist Church in Booneville, Miss.

Survivors include one son, Fred Rogers of Leesville; one daughter, Edith Louise Kendrick of Booneville, Miss.; one brother, Douglas McCombs of Booneville, Miss.; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Lois Rebecca Matheny

Funeral services for Lois Rebecca Matheny, 32, of Pitkin will be held at 11 a.m., today, Dec. 3, 2003 in the chapel at Labby Memorial Funeral Home of Leesville with Bro. Frank Ott officiating.

She died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, at her resident in Pitkin.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until time of service in the funeral home.

Ms. Matheny was a native of Denton, Texas , and lived in Pitkin. She was a member of the Southside Baptist Church in Texas .

Survivors include one son, Preson Maddox of Rosepine; one daughter, Nika Maddox of Rosepine; three brothers, Joe T. Matheny Jr., of Columbia, Mo., Mike T. Matheny of Morgan City, Mo., and Loren E. Matheny of Ashland, Mo.; and her father, Joe Matheny, Sr., of Ashland, Mo.

Lois Midkiff

Funeral services for Lois Midkiff, 71, of Leesville will be announced by Labby Memorial Funeral Home of Leesville.

Mrs. Midkiff Passed away Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003 at Byrd Regional Hospital in Leesville.

Wade Norris

Memorial services for Wade Norris, 59, of Texas City, Texas , will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, in Texas City.

Mr. Norris died Nov. 28, 2003 in Texas City. He was born on April 27, 1944 in Leesville and graduated from Leesville High School.

He served in the United States Air Force and was retired from Union Carbide in Texas City.

He is survived by his wife, Alicia Norris; one son, Brent Norris; two stepsons, Chance and Jason Daugereaux; and six grandchildren, all of Texas City; one sister, Evelyn Norris Burns of Leesville; three brothers, Gerald Norris of Porter, Texas ; Warren Norris of Stillwater, Okla.; and Glen Norris of Leesville.

Bobby Crowe

Funeral services for Bobby Crowe, 85, of Leesville were held Friday, Jan. 21, 2005 at Fort Hope Baptist Church in Pickering with Revs. Joey Rudisill, Dale Wells and Webb Robison officiating.

Burial followed in the Pine Island Cemetery in Pickering under the direction of Labby Memorial Funeral Home in Leesville.

Rev. Crowe died Thursday, Jan. 21, at Christus St. Frances Cabrini Hospital in Alexandria.

He retired as chief operator of the Water Department for the City of Beaumont.

He was a longtime Baptist minister and after retirement was a farmer.

Survivors include one son, Smokey Crowe of Leesville; one daughter, Agnes Cromeans of Wheelock, Texas ; one sister, Peggy Bailey of DeQuincy; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Mabel S. Beavers

Graveside services were held for Mabel S. Beavers, Jan. 11, at the Leesville Cemetery with Rev. Neil Early officiating and under the direction of Hixson Funeral Home.

Mrs. Beavers died at her home on Jan. 10.

She was born in Fresno, Calif. on Feb. 2, 1910.

The family moved to the Leesville area in 1918.

She was employed at West Department Store in Leesville several years prior to going to work for Bell Telephone Company where she retired.

She was a member of the First Christian Church.

Mrs. Beavers was preceded in death by her husband, William J. Beavers and daughter Billie Lou Berwick.

She is survived by a son, William (Bill) Beavers and daughter-in-law, Jeannine; one sister, Laura Sewnson; one brother, Bud Synoground; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was affectionately known as "Mam ma" by her family and many friends.
