Anders
Meral Anders, 73
Funeral services for Meral “Joe” Anders, 73, of Jonesboro were held Dec. 14 at the Jonesboro Cemetery with the Rev. Alton Peel officiating.

Mr. Anders died Dec. 8 at Lincoln General Hospital.

Born May 8, 1929 in Hodge, he was a salesman and a veteran of the United States Air Force.

He is survived by his wife, Nanette Anders of Jonesboro; son, Randy Anders and wife Pamela of Longview, Texas ; brother, Ray Anders of Alvin, Texas ; and grandchildren, Steve and Shannon.

Services were under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home.

Chatham
Hazel Chatham, 85
Funeral services for Mrs. Hazel M. Chatham, age 85, of Chatham, La., were Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002 at 2 p.m. at the Chatham United Methodist Church with the Rev. Lynn Malone and Brother Homer Bailes officiating. Burial was in the Chatham Cemetery under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home of Jonesboro, La.

Mrs. Chatham died Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002 at Landmark Nursing Home in West Monroe, La.

Mrs. Chatham was born in Buckeye, Ariz., the daughter of William Watson and Tara Hunter. She was truly a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member of the Chatham United Methodist Church and a Sunday school teacher. She was a writer for The Jackson Independent newspaper, authoring “Chatham Chatter” and later writing the “Eastside News” feature. She worked with the Jasper Henderson Elementary Special Education Department, and various other earlier jobs, including as a “riviter” during World War II. She served on the Jackson Parish School Board and was a charter member of the Chatham Industrial Development Corp and the Gateway to Caney Lake Committee.

Mrs. Chatham was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Leroy Chatham, Sr.; her daughter, Caroline Roca; and granddaughter, Heather L. Chatham. The family’s loss is definitely Heaven’s gain, and they can only imagine the joy at their reunion.

Survivors include her two sons, Leroy “Jack” Chatham, Jr. and wife Brenda and Loyd Chatham and wife Linda, both of Chatham, La.; two daughters, Susan C. Davis and husband Marvin of Chatham, La. and Sharon C. Hubanks and husband Earl of Eros, La.; one son-in-law, H.J. Roca and wife Kathleen of New Orleans, La.; two brothers, Harmon Watson of Nogales, Ariz. And Bob Watson, of Phoenix, Ariz.; 17 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, Hank Roca, Kevin Roca, Vincent Roca, Raymond McGurk, Johnny Davis, Jason Chatham, Jeremy McKinney and David Hubanks.

Special thanks to Mom’s friend and roommate, Jettie M. McCall, and to Debbie Rainwater, Dr. Orfaly and the caring staff of Landmark Nursing Home.

Memorials may be given to the Chatham United Methodist Church in Chatham, La.

Cornett
Dovie Cornett, 96
Funeral services for Dovie Holsomback Cornett, 96, of Jonesboro, were held Dec. 12 at the Edmonds Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Wayne Howington officiating. Burial followed in the Jonesboro Cemetery.

Mrs. Cornett died Dec. 9 at Healthsouth North Louisiana Rehabilitation Hospital.

Born Feb. 16, 1906, she was a retired bag mill employee.

She is survived by her son, James R. Holsomback of Jonesboro; sisters, Nadine Anderson of Keithville and Hazel Morris of Kilgore, Texas ; grandchildren, Pat Ables, Richard Holsomback, Jr. and Pam Tilley, all of Kilgore; great-grandchildren, Ashley Garner, Katie Holsomback, Allison Martin, Joey Tilley, Justin Tilley and Angel Wilson, all of Kilgore; and great-great-grandchildren, Aubren Martin, Alexis and Madison Tilley and Anslee Wilson, all of Kilgore.

Pallbearers were Kenneth Folden, Bill Jimmerson, Darcy Hutchinson, Sam Ledbetter, Stuart Harrison and Wesley Horton.

Services were under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home.

Faust
Madge Faust, 92
Funeral services for Madge Holland Faust, 92, formerly of Jonesboro, were held Dec. 11 at the Jonesboro Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Matthew Wohlfarth officiating.

Mrs. Faust died Dec. 7 in Beaumont, Texas after a lengthy illness.

Born Feb. 23, 1910 in Jonesboro, she was a homemaker.

Mrs. Faust was an active member of Southpark Baptist Church in Beaumont. She enjoyed traveling.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom Faust; parents, Mr. and Mrs. George P. Holland, brothers, Ross, Price and Jack; sisters, Ruth Ann and Bedia.

She is survived by brother, John D. Holland of Jackson , Miss.; sister, Edythe Viera of Concord, Calif.; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Services were under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home.

Shackelford
Mildred Shackelford, 88
Funeral services for Mildred Areen Quarles Shackelford, 88, of Jonesboro were held at the McDonald Memorial Baptist Church with the Revs. Terry Mims and Joey Bignar officiating. Burial followed in the Garden of Memories. Mrs. Shackelford Passed away Dec. 11 at the Jackson Manor Nursing Home in Jonesboro, La. from a long illness. She was born May, 18, 1914 near Quitman, La. She was a charter member of the McDonald Memorial Baptist Church. She always had a yard of beautiful flowers and wanted to show her many friends. She was the daughter of Osbon and Hattie Mae Vail Quarles and great-great-granddaughter of Pennuel Quarles and Elizabeth Blalock that came to Jackson Parish in the 1850s and settled on the land that is now the Hodge country club and Walnut Creek Church. She was a housewife.

Mrs. Shackelford was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Griss Shackelford; one son, Arland Morrell “Buddy;” one granddaughter, Lori Ann Robinson; twin great-grandsons, Jacob and Joshua Willett; her parents, Osbon and Hattie Mae Vail Quarles; two brothers, Waymon Osbon Quarles and Clifford Morrell Quarles; and two sisters, Mattie Pearl Anderson and Mollie Vivian Driskell Cannady.

She is survived by daughters, Barbara Robinson and husband Billy of Jonesboro and Vernell Willett and husband Bobby of Ruston; brother, Dalton Quarles of Hodge; sister, Martha Walker and husband Ollie of Palacios, Texas ; daughter-in-law, Judy Shackelford of Jonesboro; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Honorary pallbearers were the deacons at the McDonald Baptist Church. Pallbearers were Brad Allen, Dennis Allen, Chris Robinson, Ricky Shackelford, Gary Willett and Ronald Willett.

Services were under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home.

Thrasher
Herman Thrasher, 79
Memorial services were held for Herman Thrasher, 79, of Saline at Pinegrove Baptist Church on Dec. 4, 2002 with the Rev. Jerry Martin officiating. Mr. Thrasher Passed away Dec. 1 at his home in Saline. He donated his body to LSU School of Medicine. He was born Feb. 25, 1923 in Saline. He was a World War II veteran. Mr. Thrasher retired from Continental Can Company in 1983 after 37 years of service.

He was preceded in death by his parents Herbert and Rosa Thrasher, his wife of 47 years, Louise Rigdon Thrasher, and one daughter, Diane Thrasher.

He is survived by one son, Randy Thrasher of Shreveport; two daughters, Connie Wilson and husband Jim of Benton, Ark. and Trisha Busher of Hodge; two brothers, Maurice Thrasher and Aubrey Thrasher, both of Shreveport; two sisters, Iris Jean Cotton of Shreveport and Hazel Hagin of Atlanta, Texas ; seven grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Tilley
John Tilley, 77
Funeral services for John William “J.W.” Tilley, 77, of Quitman were held Dec. 7 at the Edmonds Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Stuart Toms and Nathan Luellen officiating. Burial followed in the Gayla Traina Cemetery.

Mr. Tilley died Dec. 5 at Lincoln General Hospital.

Born Feb. 4, 1925 in Ballinger, Texas , he was a retired railroad car man.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Mary Helen Tilley.

He is survived by his wife, Eva Tilley of Quitman; daughter, JoAnn Carpenter and husband Harold of Crestview, Fla.; sons, Jimmy Dale Tilley and wife Vickie of Quitman, Johnny Roy Tilley and wife Margaret of Goldonna and William Ray Tilley and wife Lois of Jonesboro; sisters, Edna Mae Ente of Stockton, Calif., Beatrice Kirkham of Bossier City and Mary Rowell of Ringgold; brother, Charlie Tilley of Jonesboro; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Mike Brooks, Ken Jeane, Curtis Otwell, Paul Gresham, Gene Austin, Barry Doner and Gilbert Pickens.

Services were under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home.

Waggoner
Jesse Waggoner, 60
Funeral services for Jesse Wayne Waggoner, 60, of Chatham were held Dec. 7 at Chatham Baptist Church with the Revs. Johnny Smith and Sherwood Smith officiating. Burial followed in the Chatham Cemetery.

Mr. Waggoner died Dec. 5 at Glenwood Medical Center.

Born Aug. 3, 1042 in Eros, he was a school bus driver.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alton and Leona Waggoner; brother, Tommy Waggoner; and sister, Gladys Morris.He is survived by his wife, Leah Waggoner of Chatham; daughter, Teresa Massey and husband Greg of West Monroe; son, Jesse Waggoner of Chatham; sisters, Eldora Bamburg and husband Erba of West Monroe, Linda Sue Greene and husband Larry of Farmerville, Frances Primm and husband Robert of Monroe and Gertrude Vigie of Houma; brothers, Calvin Edward “Bart” Waggoner and wife Shirley of Eros and Donald Waggoner and wife Pat of Eros; sister-in-law, Janice Waggoner of West Monroe; and grandchildren, Katie Michelle Massey, Kristen Abigail Massey and Kyle Andrew Massey.

Honorary pallbearers were deacons that Mr. Waggoner served with over the years.Pallbearers were Tracy Beamesderfer, Michael Farris, Herman Lenard, Danny Peel, Lonnie Salsbury and Tony Truelove.
