MOFFETT, JR. WILLIAM HOMER "BILL"
A retired district manager with the unemployment commission for the state of Mississippi and a resident of Gonzales, he died at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, in Gonzales. He was 76, a resident of Gonzales and a native of Morris Chapel, Tenn. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. Visiting and religious services at the Presbyterian Church in Senatobia, Miss., on Wednesday. interment in Ashland, Miss. Survived by a daughter, Mary Gideon, Gonzales; two sons, Thomas S. Moffett, Mobile, Ala., and William H. Moffett, Fairhope, Ala.; three grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Barnett Moffett; parents, William H. Sr. and Nell Wright Moffett; and an infant granddaughter. He was a member of Rotary International and past president of Kappa Alpha fraternity at the University of Tennessee. ROBERTS, CHARLES WILLIAM "BILL"
A courtly gentleman and scholar of Louisiana Law, he died at his residence at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000. He was born in Basile in 1928, and a resident of Baton Rouge since 1946. He was graduate of Bolton High School in 1945, LSU in 1948, and LSU Law School in 1951. He practiced law in Baton Rouge from 1952 until his death. He served as secretary of the Louisiana State Senate from 1956 to 1979. He was elected a state district judge and served from 1980 to 1984. He served as executive counsel to former Gov. Edwin W. Edwards from 1984 to 1988. He was a member of the executive committee of the Louisiana District Judges Association, University United Methodist Church, City Club of Baton Rouge, Ducks Unlimited and the LSU chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Survived by wife, Helen Robert Roberts; four children and their spouses, Cooper and Joanne Roberts and Aline and Stephen Creed, all of Baton Rouge, Nathan and Chris Roberts of Lafayette and Matthew Roberts of Washington , D.C.; eight grandchildren, Katie, Beau and Margaret Roberts, Billy and Emily Creed, and Max, Megan and Sam Roberts; a sister, Mae Herndon of Jonesboro, Ark.; and two brothers, Nathan D. SCHENK, HERMAN WILLIE
A retired carpenter and member of Carpenters Union Local 1098 and a lifelong resident of Livingston, he died at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, 2000, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, Baton Rouge. He was 74. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Visiting was at Seale Funeral Home, Livingston, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday. SMITH, ROSE LEE "BECK"

Rose Lee Smith, affectionately known as Mama, Grandma, Beck and Rosebud, was born Jan. 10, 1912, to Dora and Turner Smith. She was baptized at the age of 12 by the Rev. Minor. She served on the usher board at Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church for several years. She was a longtime faithful member of Mount Pilgrim until she moved to Atwater, Calif., in 1997, where she departed her life Sunday, Sept. 24, 2000, at 7:20 p.m. She was 88 and a native of Maringouin. Visiting at A. Wesley Funeral Home, 10810 Ventress Drive, Maringouin, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. CHOONG, ELVIN THIAN-SEN
Dr. Elvin Thian-Sen Choong Passed away on Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at La Tigra National Park, near Tegucigalpa, Honduras. He is survived by his wife, Frieda Natawidjaja; his son, Michael Elvin Choong, Chapel Hill, N.C.; a daughter, Junita Choong Meier, Baton Rouge; a stepson, Francis-cus Xavier, New York; and two sisters, Mary Choong Tjiong, Lake Wylie, S.C., and Stella Everett, Nacogdoches, Texas . He was born on Oct. 20, 1932, in Jakarta, Indo-nesia. He was an alumnus of North Dakota State University, Montana State University, Yale University and State University of New York in Syracuse. For the last 36 years, Dr. Choong was a professor of forestry at the LSU School of For-estry and Wildlife. He was a pro-lific research scientist and was in-volved in many international pro-jects dealing with tropical rainfor-ests. He took great joy in working with and helping all of his students and was the faculty advisor for the Indonesian Student Association. One of his greatest loves was swimming. In 1948, he was a member of the Indonesian Olym-pic swim team. He continued to swim throughout his life and took great pride and joy in his involve-ment with the Baton Rouge Cray-fish Masters swim team and the Louisiana Senior Olympic games. He will long be remembered for his intelligent intensity, love for life and sincere friendship and generosity. His smiles and laugh-ter were truly special and will be sorely missed by all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Lou-isiana Senior Olympic Games, P.O.
