He was a very much loved husband, dad and granddad. A retired draftsman/plan reviewer for the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development with 38 years of service and a native and resident of Lake, he died at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at his home. He was 66 and a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. Burial in Walls Cemetery. Survived by his wife, Mary Lea Pinion Savoie; mother, Della P. Matherne Savoie; a daughter and son-in-law, Susette and Chris Delatte; and two sons and daughters-in-law, James and Connie Savoie and Alan and Lori Savoie, all of Lake; two sisters and two brothers-in-law, Jeanette and Ewell Bencaz of Denham Springs and Elaine and James Little of French Settlement; and five grandchildren, Matthew A. Savoie, Luke C. Savoie, Austin J. Savoie, Stefanie L. Savoie and Jennie M. Delatte. Preceded in death by his father, Joseph V. Savoie; and a grandson, Daniel J. Savoie. He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, St. Amant, third degree Knights of Columbus Council 6753 of French Settlement, fourth degree Knights of Columbus Monsignor Arthur Lieux of Gonzales, the Fordoche Sportsman Club, the National Rifle Association, Cajun French Music Association, the Les Danseurs Cajun de la Louisianne and Les Danseurs de la Capitale de Baton Rouge. And pray to our Lady of Lourdes.

SIMS JR., JULIEN
A retired employee of the Louisiana Health Unit and a resident of Baton Rouge, he died Wednesday, June 9, 2004, in Baton Rouge. He was 98 and a native of Darrow. interment in Van Hoffa Cemetery, Darrow. Survived by two daughters, Olevia Davis and Hazel Roman; a son, Milton Bureau; three godchildren eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Preceded in death by his wife and parents. He was a senior deacon at Mount Olive Baptist Church.

SPLAND SR., GILBERT "SARGE"
A former employee of Kaiser Aluminum Corp. and an employee of Dixon Correctional Institute, he passed peacefully at 12:01 a.m. Sunday, June 13, 2004, at Lane Memorial Hospital, Zachary. He was 58 years old, a native of Port Hudson and a resident of Zachary. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War and a graduate of Scotlandville Senior High. Burial in Port Hudson National Cemetery. Survived by a loving and devoted wife of 21 years, Bernice Sims Spland; mother, Anna Rowe Spland; six daughters; Valeria Renee and Tywanda Cherie Spland, both of Baker, Sherrie Anette Veals of Baton Rouge, Aronda Burnette Veals of Prairieville, and Carmen LaRese and Demetria Eileen Spland, both of Zachary; four sons and two daughters-in-law; Gilbert Spland Jr. and wife Stacey of Woods tock, Ga., William Richard Veal and wife Cynthia and Kilbert Spland, all of Baker, and Jonathan Spland of Zachary; four sisters, Mimia Lynette Hunt and husband Ronald Sr. of Houston, Mary S. Crump and husband Jim, Brenda Bell and Julia S. McKinnis and husband Robert, all of Baton Rouge; a brother, Calvin R. Bell of New Orleans; three sisters-in-law, Audrey S. McGuffie and husband Edward, Evelyn Fullwood of Baton Rouge and Lula Mae Dunn and husband James of Jackson ; two brothers-in-law, Gilbert Sims Jr. and wife Renetta of Baton Rouge and Percy Sims and wife Catherine of Baton Rouge; an aunt, Juanita S. Williams of Baton Rouge; an uncle, Jessie Spland Sr. of Baton Rouge; 14 grandchildren, a great-grandchild and a host of nieces, great-nieces, nephews, great-nephews, other relatives and friends. Preceded in death by his father, Wilbert "Doc" Spland; grandparents Octavia McCoy Spland and Joseph and Mary Robertson Rowe; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Gilbert Sims Sr. and Elizabeth Sims; and twin grandchildren.

ALLEN, VESTER LEE "TEX"
A resident of Prairieville and former resident of Greer and Greenville, S.C., he died Wednesday, July 7, 2004, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. He was 58. He was the former owner of Allen's Repair and Remodeling and a U.S. Navy veteran. He is survived by his wife, Ann Allen; stepdaughter, Lorie Dawson; and grandchildren, Michael and Jeremy Cabrera. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother. Memorial services will be held at a future date in Greenville.

ATTAYA, HELEN L.
A retired registered nurse, she died at 9:25 p.m. Tuesday, July 13, 2004, at Ollie Steele Burden Manor. She was 85, a native of Garyville and former longtime resident of New Orleans and Gonzales. She was the first director of the School of Operating Room Technicians at New Orleans Charity Hospital, where she retired after many years of service. interment in St. Theresa of Avila Catholic Church Cemetery, Gonzales, at 4:15 p.m. Friday. She is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Rita Belle and Herb Taft, Baton Rouge; nieces and nephews, Mary Johnson and husband Fielding and Louise Golden and husband Brian, all of Baton Rouge, Ann Reynolds of Florida, Kathy Daugherty of Kentucky, Stephen Attaya of New Orleans and James Attaya of Michigan; and many great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry E. and Mary F. Attaya; a brother, retired Lt. Col. H.E. Attaya Jr.; and a sister, Miriam T. Attaya.

BENOIT, ROBERT JOSEPH
An industrial painter with Turner Industries and a resident of Pierre Part, he died at 1:30 a.m. Monday, July 12, 2004, in Napoleonville. He was 43 and a native of Thibodaux. interment in St. Joseph Cemetery, Thibodaux. He is survived by his wife, Nadine Landry Benoit of Pierre Part; father, Clarence Benoit of Independence; mother, Shirley Lirette Benoit of Thibodaux; a son, Robert Landry of Pierre Part; a stepdaughter, Britney Landry of Pierre Part; three sisters, Wanda Vendros of Gonzales, Theresa Lirette of Thibodaux and Diane Benoit of Independence; five brothers, Clarence Benoit Jr., Tony Benoit of Pierre Part, Danny and Alton Allemond, both of Thibodaux, and Terry Allemond of Independence; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Percy and Ann Aucoin Landry of Pierre Part. He was preceded in death by a sister, Vergie Lee Allemond; and two brothers, Christopher and Allen Allemond.

COOPER, NELDA DENHAM
A homemaker and resident of St. Amant, she died Monday, July 12, 2004, in Baton Rouge. She was 70 and a native of Acy. interment in Hope Haven Cemetery, Gonzales. Survived by her husband, Allen B. Cooper; a daughter, Tyra K. Cooper; two sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen P. and Nona Guitreau and Phil D. and Angel Guitreau; a daughter-in-law, Rhonda Guitreau; two sisters, Nola Calhoun and Roberta LeBlanc ; six grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. Preceded in death by her parents, George B. Denham and Pearl Cutrer Denham Powers; a son, Craig Guitreau; a stepson, Tommy Cooper; two sisters, Iris Hebert and Gladys Landry; and three brothers, George, Lyndon and Willie Denham. Pallbearers were Warren Denham, Davis Landry, Michael LeBlanc , Stephen Guitreau Jr., Craig Guitreau and Phil Guitreau Jr.

MAZOCH, IGNATIUS John "I.J."
Mazoch, 76, died Monday, July 12, 2004, at his El Campo home following a lengthy and brave battle with cancer. "Rock," as he was affectionately known during 41 years as an employee and foreman for Transco Pipeline Co. in Texas and Louisiana , was born Nov. 12, 1927, in El Campo, to John and Mary Kocurek Mazoch. He served in the U.S. Army and Air Force from 1946 to 1948. His membership included St. Philip Catholic Church, Craig-Harriss Post 251 of the American Legion, Knights of Columbus Council 2490 in El Campo and the K.J.T. "I.J." was named for his maternal grandfather, the late Ignac Kocurek, who moved with his wife Emilie to El Campo from Dubina, Texas , in 1890. The Kocureks were El Campo's first family of Czech ancestry and one of the first parishioners of St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church. He and his wife, the former Annie Nedbalek, were married at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Blessing, Texas , on May 14, 1951. I.J. is survived by his wife and six children. The children and their families are Patricia and Sid Lambert, and their sons, Ryan and Clay, all of Fort Worth; Dr. John Mazoch and Dr. Cheryl Hedlund Mazoch, and their son, Mathew, of Bueche; Annette and Gregg Martin and their daughters, Miki and Adrien, all of Prairieville; Shelia and Jeff Bourque, and their sons, Jay and Jared, all of Gonzales; Dr. Brent and Dr. Lisa Mazoch, and their children, Brad and Amanda, all of Zachary; and Victoria Sweeney, and her son, Lex, both of Gonzales. Survivors also include brothers, Alfonce Mazoch of El Campo and Joe Mazoch of Cuero; and sisters, Martha Marek and Beatrice Yockey, both of El Campo, and Edith Rachunek of Wharton. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Ricky, in 1973. interment in Gonzales at Hope Haven Mausoleum. Pallbearers were Ryan and Clay Lambert, Mathew Mazoch, Jay and Jared Bourque, Lex Sweeney and Brad Mazoch. Giftbearers are Miki and Adrien Martin and Amanda Mazoch.

MILLET, AUBERT JOSEPH
A retired laboratory technician with Ethyl Corp., and a resident of Geismar, he died Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Gonzales. He was 88, a native of Paulina and U.S. Army veteran. Entombment in Prairieville Mausoleum. He is survived by his wife, Elsie B. Millet of Gonzales; son, Donley Millet of Geismar; grandson, Kary Millet of Geismar; brother, Wallace Roussell; and two sisters, Rose Marion Russell and Floramay Schexnayder. Preceded in death by his parents, Aubert and Ludivine Faucheux Millet; a sister, Clolide Tregre; and a brother, Bertrand Roussell.

SMITH SR., LEONARD RAY
A retired employee with Yellow Freight Lines, he died Tuesday, July 13, 2004, at his home in Prairieville. He was 50 and a native of Baton Rouge. interment in Winnfield Memorial Park. Survived by his wife, Diana Bonés Smith; mother and stepfather, Doris M. Cann and Wilbert Cann; two daughters and sons-in-law, Melissa Rae and Cliff Smith and Angela and Dameian Butler- Jones; two sons, Leonard Ray Smith Jr. and Robert Jr. and wife Niagee Butler; two sisters, Lolita Smith and husband Frank Forbes and Linda S. Griffin; a brother, Floyd Lee Smith Sr.; two grandchildren, Camryn Chenevert and Jordyn Jones; an aunt, Pearlie Hill-Shelmire; mother-in-law, Ramona Bonés; father-in-law, Marcial Bonés Sr.; three sisters-in-law, including two devoted sisters-in-law, Arlene Caine- Smith and Maria B. Clayborne; seven brothers-in-law; three godchildren, Adryon Forbes, Ingrid Tate and Stephanie Bonés; nieces, including two devoted nieces, Shantell Jones and Candyce Smith; nephews, other relatives and friends, including two very special friends, Willie and Mildred Baker. Preceded in death by his father, Eddie Smith Sr.; two brothers, Eddie Smith Jr. and Ernest Smith Sr.; maternal grandmother, Pearline Williams; and a nephew, Thad Smith. He was a member of Teamsters Local 5 and Capital City Elks Club.

PREJEAN SR., JOHN ALFRED "JOHNNY"
John Alfred "Johnny" Prejean Sr., who retired from Gulf States Utilities after 34 years of service, died at 10:45 a.m. Friday, July 16, 2004. He was 74, a resident of Gonzales and a native of Addis. John was a member of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union Local 2286. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War, serving with Fighter Squadron 112, from 1948-1952, and a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. As an avid musician, he dedicated a specific song to each of his children. The sons and daughters would never tire of requesting that their song be played. He was a beloved brother, husband, father and grandfather. John never met a stranger, and would be a friend after spending five minutes with whomever he met. We will miss him greatly. Survived by his wife of 50 years, Robbie Roberta Watson Prejean; five sons and four daughters-in-law, John Jr. and Edward and Tina Otts Prejean, all of Gonzales, Darrell and Theresa Garig Prejean of Prairieville, Dwayne and Kim Gueho Prejean of Gonzales and Austin and Lisa Tedrick Prejean of Maryland; three daughters and sons-in-law, Diana Lynn and Ronald Ray Young of Prairieville, Cynthia and Steve J. Babin of Gonzales and Lisa Gayle Prejean of Prairieville; 17 grandchildren, Brandi Young and fiance Seth Prejean, Jason and Eric Young, Summer Lynn and William Austin "Scooter" Prejean, Chad and Chase Prejean, Joey, Cheri and Kelsie Babin, Ashley Davenport and Teddy Ray Prejean, Whitney Prejean, Brandon and Chad Gueho and Tristan and Chloe Prejean; and great-granddaughter, Kobi Gueho. John is survived by his brothers and sisters-in-law, Paul Prejean Jr., Robert E. and wife Margaret Prejean of Port Allen, Thomas Glenn and wife Gladys Prejean and Harold E. "LuLu" Prejean and wife Julie Prejean of Addis; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Katherine and Roy Mouch of Addis, Patricia and Brent Haydell of Lafayette and Betty Jean and Pete Landry of Brusly; his brothers-in-law, Thurlow and Dot Watson of Mississippi, Malcolm Watson and Maxine Mills of Mississippi and Robert Harold Dew of Gonzales; and sisters-in-law, Juliet and husband James Berry of Marrero, Margaret Louise Collins of Gonzales and Joan Prejean. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul Adolph and Viola Celeste Hotard Prejean; two brothers, Leslie and Louis Prejean; a sister, Margaret Matherne; a grandson, Dusty Prejean; and good friend, Max Nealy. Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Jason Young, Chad Prejean, Joey Babin, Eric Young, Scooter Prejean and Teddy Prejean. Honorary pallbearers are Brandon and Chad Gueho, Chase Prejean, Tristan Prejean and Timothy Clark. Visiting at St. Theresa of Avila Catholic Church from 8 a.m. until funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 20, 2004, conducted by the Rev. Gary Belsome. Entombment in Hope Haven Mausoleum, Gonzales.

ROY JR., SAUL
A resident of Gonzales and a native of Abbeville, he died at 10:30 p.m. Friday, July 16, 2004, at Baton Rouge General Medical Center-Mid City. He was 71. Entombment in the St. Gabriel Catholic Church Mausoleum. Survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Susan Roy and John May; three sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Theresa Roy, Greg and Stacey Roy and Lynn and Angela Roy; four sisters, 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his wife, Mary Yvonne Richard Roy; four brothers and three sisters. He was a fourth degree member of Knights of Columbus.

VILLNUVE, ANITA ANN
A resident of French Settlement, she died at 2:30 a.m. Sunday, July 11, 2004, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. She was 31 and a native of St. Amant. Survived by her parents, Warnell and Diane Villnuve, St. Amant; a daughter, Kaylyn Nicole Villnuve, French Settlement; a sister, Katie Lynn Bueche, Sorrento; and a brother, Daniel Joseph Villnuve, St. Amant. Preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Theophile Villnuve.

WAGGENSPACK, IRWIN A. "FINNY"
A retired oil field worker with Humble Oil Co., he died at 1:28 a.m. Tuesday, July 13, 2004, in Gonzales. He was 82, a lifelong resident of Gonzales and a native of Modeste. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II, having served from Jan. 24, 1942, to Sept. 29, 1945, at Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Saipan and Titian in the Pacific Theater. interment in Resthaven Gardens of Memory, Baton Rouge. He is survived by two brothers, U. Vincent and Harold Waggenspack; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Audrey Brou Waggenspack; parents, Willis and Julia Landry Waggenspack; four sisters, Wilda Waggenspack, Patricia W. Waguespack, Rose Mary W. Many and Thelma Waggenspack; and four brothers, Melvin, Wilbur, Warren and Linden Waggenspack. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. John Fraiche, Marion Scalisi and Penrose St. Amant.

AVERETT, ARNOLD "DAVID"
A marine service engineer with Sperry Marine and a resident of Livingston, he died Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, in Livingston. He was 54 and a native of Memphis, Tenn. He was a U.S. Navy veteran. interment in Colyell Baptist Church Cemetery, Livingston. Survived by his wife, Janice Ledet Averett; a daughter, Lacy Elizabeth Averett and fiance Rusty Warren Lambert; a sister, Shirley Tullier; a brother, Melvin Russell Averett; and a grandchild, Lexus Paige "Lexi" Viger. Preceded in death by his parents, Arnold G. Averett and Ruth Russell Averett.
