Rosalie Elizabeth Schell, a homemaker, died Tuesday at Chalmette Medical Center. She was 92. Mrs. Schell was born in New Orleans and lived in Plaquemines Parish for the past 53 years. Survivors include a son, Albert L. Schell III; a brother, Lee Husson; a sister, Leona Husson; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. A Mass will be said today at 11 a.m. at St. Bernard Memorial Funeral Home, 701 W. Virtue St., Chalmette. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in St. Bernard Memorial Gardens cemetery.
SERPAS, CARROLL JOSEPH

Carroll Joseph Serpas, a retired accountant with Gulf Federal Savings and Loan, died Monday of complications from cancer at East Jefferson General Hospital. He was 68. Mr. Serpas was born in New Orleans and lived in Metairie for the past 42 years. He was a graduate of St. Aloysius High School and attended Tulane University and Soulé Business College. He was an Army veteran. He was a former teller at the National Bank of Commerce and manager of Public Storage. He was an honorary colonel in the State Police, a Jefferson Parish constable and a former president of the New Orleans Fraternal Order of Police, Crescent City Lodge No. 2. Mr. Serpas was a past president of the Louisiana Chapter of Controllers and Financial Officers of Saving institutions, a former treasurer of the Southern District Conference of Controllers and Financial Officers and a member of the National Committee for Operations, Systems and Procedures for Savings Associations. He was a member of the Italian American Society, the American Red Cross, the Civic Association of Jefferson, the Airline Lions Club, the St. Aloysius Alumni Association, the Touchdown Club and the Krewe of Argus. Survivors include his wife, Dolores Brue Serpas; a son, Carroll J. Serpas Jr.; a daughter, Dolores Mary "Dee Dee" Brue Serpas Albarado; two brothers, James and Albert Serpas; a sister, Claire Bonee; and four grandchildren. A Mass will be said Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, 6500 Kawanee Ave. Visitation will be today from 6 to 10 p.m. and Saturday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Metairie. Burial will be in Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum.

Ezra Simmons, a retired valet, died Tuesday of a stroke at Pendleton Memorial Methodist Hospital. He was 71. Mr. Simmons was born in Heidelburg, Miss., and lived in New Orleans for the past 49 years. He attended Shady Grove High School. He was a past employee at City Hall, where he worked as a parking attendant, and Bick Service Station. Survivors include a companion, Bernadine Duman; a daughter, Rosemary Simmons; his mother, Sallie Mae Simmons Cooley; and six sisters, Bernice Jones of Chicago, Kathy Lee Simmons of Heidelburg, Miss., Jessie McCarty, Adra Forter, Corrine McGill and Winnie Perkins. A funeral will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Shady Grove Baptist Church in Heidelburg. Visitation will begin Friday at 4 p.m. at Tilly's Funeral Home, 2831 St. Claude Ave. Burial will be in Shady Grove Baptist Church cemetery.

Julia Recasner Thomas, a homemaker, died Nov. 19 of heart failure at University Hospital. She was 86. Mrs. Thomas was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. She was a parishioner of St. Peter Claver Catholic Church. Survivors include three sons, Freddie, Oscar and Eugene A. Thomas Jr.; a sister, Louise Phillips Thomas; 18 grandchildren; 57 great-grandchildren; and 33 great-great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 1210 Gov. Nicholls St. Visitation will begin at 8 a.m. Burial will be private. Carolyn Marie Turner, a homemaker, died Saturday of undetermined causes at her home. She was 52. Ms. Turner was a lifelong resident of New Orleans and attended Booker T. Washington High School. She was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church. Survivors include a son, Sean M. Turner; a daughter, Akia K. Turner; and two sisters, Janice Jackson and Yolanda T. Gaunichaux. Widley "Joe" Jean Breaux, a self-employed barber, died Friday at IHS-Marrero. He was 90. Mr. Breaux was born in Assumption Parish and lived in Gretna for the past 69 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 1905 of Gretna. Survivors include his wife, Gladys Torres Breaux; two sons, Barry and Donald Breaux; a daughter, Jackie Scego; two brothers, Wesley and Lester Breaux; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Christopher David Briede, a systems administrator for Pride Marketing and Procurement, died Friday of a gunshot wound at his home. He was 32. Mr. Briede was born in New Orleans and lived in Metairie most of his life before returning to New Orleans. He graduated from St. Stanislaus High School in Bay St. Louis, Miss., and attended the Art Institute of Houston. He was co-founder of Bella Design, a computer Web and systems design company. Survivors include his wife, Amy Simonelli Briede; his father, Albert E. Briede III; his mother, Irene Gillen Briede; three brothers, Richard C., Otto F. and Albert E. Briede IV; and four sisters, Irene B. Lutkewitte, Delsa B. Charbonnet, Margaret B. Brooksher and Bridget B. Bories. Marion Morvant Gerarve, a retired secretary and medical office administrator, died Sept. 23 of complications from liver transplant surgery at Ochsner Foundation Hospital. She was 59. Mrs. Gerarve was born in New Orleans and lived in River Ridge for the past 37 years. She attended St. Stephens High School and Loyola University. She was formerly a secretary at Hazel Park School in Jefferson Parish and a medical office administrator. Survivors include her husband, Frank Edward Gerarve Jr.; two sons, Frank Edward Gerarve III and Matthew Michael Gerarve; a daughter, Jeanne Gerarve Pichon; her father, Clifton A. Morvant; her mother, Marjorie Morvant; four brothers, Clifton A. Morvant Jr., Edward, John and Thomas Morvant; a sister, Anne Morvant Elmer; and three grandchildren. Selma Barras Hebert, a retired cafeteria manager for the Jefferson Parish public schools, died Saturday at West Jefferson Medical Center in Marrero. She was 86. Ms. Hebert was born in Terrebonne Parish and lived in Marrero for the past 59 years. She was a graduate of Terrebonne High School. She was a past employee of Ames Elementary and Marrero Middle School. She was a member of the West Bank Homemakers Club. Survivors include two daughters, Betty H. Capdeville and Carolyn H. Gump; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A Mass will be said today at 11 a.m. at Mothe Funeral Home, 7040 LaPalco Blvd. in Marrero.
